GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here: [2970].
-
As we find, there are tendencies which, unless corrections are made, will eventually cause conditions to become very disturbing to the body. These, as we find, are the result of conditions becoming unbalanced in the chemical reactions, or the glandular system, in its inability through the sources of the processes in glandular reactions of reproducing the cellular forces necessary to replace normal conditions. These are indicated from conditions which exist at times in hands, arms, feet and limbs; not a stiffness, but a soreness and the lack of vital forces or energies being active in the extremities, especially.
-
These also produce those conditions where at times there is apparently a rash, or spots on portions of the body, conditions where there are apparently accumulations in swollen areas, or a gland, as indicated in portions of the head or face, as in conditions through portions of the body, as the mammary gland, as in the glands through the groin at times. All of these are the effects of these conditions through the body.
-
We would find that there should be about twice a month a thorough hydrotherapy treatment. This would mean a Fume Bath rather than the dry heat, this Fume Bath with witchhazel; and also a thorough massage with Pine Oils.
-
And then about once a week, until about ten or twelve have been taken, have osteopathic adjustments which are relaxing to the body; not those that would stimulate activities or secretions, but the relaxing so that there is more uniform coordination between superficial and deeper circulation. Hence the specific areas, 1st, 2nd and 3rd cervicals, throughout the brachial center, 9th dorsal and throughout the lumbar and sacral areas, using the limbs as leverages at times for these centers.
-
Increase the eliminations somewhat, especially through the periods that these activities are being taken. We would alternate in this manner: For five days take just teaspoonful of Eno Salts of a morning before any meal is taken. Leave it off, skip three days and through the next five days take a senna base laxative. This taken each morning for five days. Leave off for three days, then take the Eno Salts again for the five days. Keep this up with this alternating until at least full corrections are made in the hydrotherapy as well as the osteopathic adjustments. Here we will find we’ll have much better coordinating and balance throughout the activities of the body and we’ll rid it from this arthritic tendency.
-
In the matter of the diet do take more raw foods, especially watercress, carrots, and such foods and do include with these gelatine oft. These grated, ground, but do use the juices of same with gelatine. These, with the other corrections, will change conditions of eyes, throat and all of the organs of the sensory system; improve hearing, vision, vocal box, as well as taste and sense of the vibrations about the body.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) How can I eliminate the growth over right eye? (A) Massage with Castor Oil at least every evening.
-
(Q) What causes sleeplessness? (A) We have been indicating the incoordinations, and through the use of these massages, setting up better eliminations, setting up better conditions through the glandular systems, we’ll have bettered conditions in normal rest and relaxation.
-
(Q) Should any of the teeth be extracted? (A) We would use Ipsab as a massage. We do not find other than some local attention needed. There’s some need to be cleaned and then it will require about four fillings.
-
(Q) How can I restore eyesight to eliminate use of glasses? (A) This will not be entirely eliminated but the suggestions in the diet and the massage indicated and do use head and neck exercises. These all will improve vision, it’ll not eliminate entirely, for the nerves and the longation of the vision require help; these will be improved, however, a great deal.
-
(Q) What exercises would be suggested to strengthen muscles and overcome sagging protruding abdomen? (A) Walking is the best exercise. Also in the morning and at night, on hands with feet placed against the wall, do the circular motion once or twice; not easy in the beginning but these will be most helpful and strengthening for the body. Do this at least three times. The first two or three times, don’t try it more than once or twice.
-
(Q) Am I in any danger of mental unbalance due to too exclusive study or religion and philosophy? (A) Do not study so much; though not any danger of unbalance in those directions. Don’t study so much, but apply it. You’ll get a lot more out of it and it’ll do others more good too.
-
(Q) Any spiritual advice that would help me physically? (A) As ye would that others should do to you, do ye even so to them. This is not merely a trite saying, not something, just to be said but in every activity, consider the things that you do and the things that you say. Would you want them said about you? Would you want them done to you? Would you want them thought about you? Should you want them to forget you? These are different when they are explained to self in that manner and in using this. For remember, as ye do it unto others, ye do to thy Maker.

R1. 7/18/44 [2970]‘s letter:
Dear Doctor Cayce, Mrs. C and the “Little C’s”
I purposely did not write till after the convention, as knew I had nothing of interest to contribute and that you all would be too busy with convention to be disturbed unnecessarily by anything else. Not that I intend to disturb you too much by a mere letter.
I have not yet found a place that I can recommend for the “Fume baths” in fact I have not found anyone who knows what they are - they all say “O you mean a steam cabinet” and proceed to “steam me” to the lobster state then patter and putter a bit with what they call a massage - I am trying out another today and will let you know about that later.
I very definitely am no better - have been taking Dr. […]‘s treatments one day a week - that with dentist appointments, and four classes a week after work have tied up my evenings until about 11 or 12 before I get my dinner and myself ready for bed, so that have had to neglect everything in a personal way or social including letters to the soldiers on my list. But classes are over now for the summer and am going to skip most of them next winter.
I came back to an office that was truly a mad house when the invasion started. And it still is. Have surely lost all the good effects of my rest and sun etc. that I managed to store up the two weeks I was off.
Dr. C I am sure a poor student of your philosophy, I do believe that the life of our Master Jesus is the only teacher we need, also that we must get quiet and “look within” for our guide and instruction. BUT when I try to look within I find so much confusion, so many questions, so little understanding. We look within for peace, we hope for peace for the world after this so called war - for what? We hope for peace within, that we may guide and help our friends and fellow men, we pray for the safety of the dear ones that WE HAVE SENT into world battle. Does it make sense to send a man out to be shot at while we pray for his safety? We hear a lot of big talk about a world peace, yet we know it will be a perfect maize of political intrigue, national and international conspiracy of the “silk hat gangsters” - that phase of the war will start whenever the Big Shots get tired of playing “chess” with millions of lives. We had the big talk of “Four Freedoms” - freedom for all nations - and in the same breath says Gr. Brit, Aside - “Except India which is the greatest gold mine in my possession for my Plutocrats to play with, Fooey Ill keep her under complete subjection”… I see and know too much of these fat sleek officers and so called Big men - sitting here in comfort pulling the strings to run the world wide Olympic games… In my department I am sickened by the vultures who come flocking down on the office for pictures to make into books, from which they are “cleaning up millions” selling the “families of the boys returning soon” and we know thousands of them NEVER will return…
R2. 7/21/44 [2970]‘s letter:
Just as I was going into Dr. Water’s office this morning for my last treatment [before she goes on vacation], who should I meet but one of the loveliest ladies I know, Mrs. Poss. She looked positively radiant. I said to Dr. W that I thought she was even prettier than usual and Dr. W said “Yes nature and her condition combined are giving her that inner loveliness of spirit of the madonna added to her natural beauty, I would love to have a picture as she looks today” - Dr. W also added that she is “doing splendidly in every way” so that also means her health is very nicely taken care of. I thought you wold like to know this. I had tried to get her several times over the phone to get a report to include with my letter, but she tells me she is going down town etc. most every day, though she is not sick, she just does not “relish” her own cooking, teee heee.
Peg also tells me you all think I did not “care so much for you all” since I had not written - I would be most unhappy if I thought you really did believe that, and as it is I am properly hanging my head in shame - but with the dozen of really interesting letters you have daily, how COULD you even miss mine?
Peg also tells me you are not any better in health than when I was there, IF AS WELL, and that idea of your going away for a month, which she mentioned, would be so very good in every way… I do hope you will, and whether you look at it from a practical standpoint of spiritual, I don’t see how you can fail to realize, the great need you are filling for so many people… To me your spiritual guidance of so many is so terribly needed by this sick old world and the hundreds who look to you for words of encouragement and guidance, all together make it so important that you take care of this blessed gift of life, and your special “talent” that God has given to you, it is not yours to neglect, as this very unusual and valuable “Channel” for God’s work is in your keeping. I hope and pray you will give it the care worthy of one of the Master’s pieces of “special machinery” even if you might be a bit inclined to neglect Mr. Cayce, which I know good and well you are.
Now don’t be offended at such a lecture from a “pertinent upstart”, but please DO SOMETHING that will give you a chance to recuperate into better physical condition.
Believe me again, that I do love you all so very much, and felt so much as “just one of the bunch” that I never dreamed you would question my loyal affection for you and the work, even if you never had letters, however if you like to be “reminded” I will try and do so now and then.
Don’t bother to answer this, as I know there are far too many letters to be written that are necessary, With my sincere Love to you all, [2970]
R3. 7/25/44 EC’s letter:
Miss [2970] Washington 9, D.C.
Dear Miss [2970]
Thanks a lot for yours of the 18th. We have been wondering what had happened. While we have had plenty of work on hand and are just beginning to catch up on correspondence that accumulated during Congress week, we were, of course, anxious to know about yourself.
We wondered if we had said or done anything that made you cut us off your list, but we are glad to know it was your consideration for us, and not anything we had done.
I don’t understand why more people haven’t found out about the Fume Baths. You know, if you could take a cabinet like they give light baths in, and turn on one light on either side, then put a croup cup with the witch hazel in, it would be just the thing for a Fume Bath. Maybe you could do it yourself. Or take an open cup and set it on a little hot plate. Use one-half pint of water and a spoonful of the witch hazel - let her boil - and you’ll get the Fume Bath!
I am sorry to hear that you are not feeling any better, but I hope that you will be able to get the Fume Baths, for one of the doctors who spoke at the convention reported on her use of this, and she said that while it was something new to her, it was certainly most effective.
You are quite right. The only pattern we need is the life of the Master, and His teachings. When we get this, and can look within, everything else means very little.
Well, let’s don’t get too worked up. You know, maybe, if we will try to put people in high places who have something of the spirit of the Christ consciousness, maybe the big shots and stiff shirts won’t have quite so much political intrigue. You are right, it is fearful to send boys out to get shot at, and then pray for peace, but so many things are contradictory it is hard to say which is which, but if we will do what we know to do, maybe we will get along better.
You may have the answer to your problem in the Masseuse and use of the electric blanket, but if you could get one Fume Bath and then massage, you will find that you hit the right thing.
I understand that Dr. Waters is going away. I was planning on being there for a little while, but I will have to do something else, now. I am going to have to go on a strike for a few weeks. I don’t know just how long, but I am trying to get away the latter part of this week. I have to do to Florida on some business, and I hope to get in one or two days’ fishing, if I can.
Yes, I was talking to Louis and Peg the other day; and some of the folks from here were up there, and told me how fine Peg was looking. I am glad, for everybody, even those doctors, tried to tell her she was foolish.
Thanks a lot for letting us hear from you, and do write us again.
Mother, Gladys, and all the rest send their regards.
With love from all,
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce EC:gp
R4. 8/9/44 [2970]‘s letter:
Washington DC
Dear Mr. Cayce (or whoever opens the mail)
Will you please finish addressing the enclosed letter to Hugh Lynn and send it on to him in England. I had first intended sending it for Mr. C to read and then send on but remembered that he might be - “out of touch with the world, vacationing in the Florida everglades.” So I called Peg and read it to her to see if she approved and she said she thought HL would be glad for some of the ideas stirred up by his article, so am sending it along.
Now will you also send me information about opening a study group. If I have them here it would have to be small as I do not have chairs to take care of more than 5 or six at a time, and I think a small group do study better together, so is there a limit to how Small the group may be? Do you have a regular planned course or may we study the weekly readings, the Search for God, The River, or whatever of his lectures may be ready from the material you were working on this summer? Would we have to have a Teacher, or can we read and discuss together as some of the groups I have worked with do and seem to get a great deal out of the lessons?? Hugh Lynn’s article made me realize how very little most of us really give toward helping the Association, in service especially. Yet if we have the intelligence and will to USE what we gain in the readings, they are of value to us beyond estimate. I think the ideas for greater development of the Association are excellent and I surely hope that I may be permitted to assist in carrying them out, but in the meantime I am going to see if I cannot do a little more in Living what I have learned and trying to pass on to others the opportunity to Learn, through Mr. Cayce’s teachings.
I surely hope the vacation turns out to be one of quiet and rest for you all and especially for Mr. C - I know Peg and Louis will be sorry if you do not get to come up and Loaf there for a week or so, and think that would be a grand place to rest. But whatever you do to let up on the work for awhile should be good.
I tried out a Dr. in hopes of finding one to take Dr. Water’s place while she is on vacation. In some ways he was very good. A Dr. Barger, who is teaching Physio- something or other at Georgetown. He is not an Osteopath though he practically admitted that he knows just as much if not a little more than a mere osteopath. And I could tell him if he had the technique of Dr. Waters combined with his “mist bath” he would surely have the best thing I have found yet, but his “treatment” is just a Super massage. It is grand and restful but still lacks the results of a good Osteopath.
His office is in his home, Mrs. B gives the bath. It is a cabinet affair, and I have a hunch he is the inventor as the place was full of “Gadgets” that were home-made and some one told me he was quite a genius. One that appealed to me was a time saver in the bath room, a gadget that was a combination of a music rack, magazine holder or something for holding book or magazine while in the tub or otherwise occupied in the bathroom. It was on a hinged arm that could be adjusted wherever desired. That was my first inkling that I had discovered a genius. But back to the bath.
You are placed on this high narrow cot, and shoved into the oven like an over-sized loaf of bread, the head is left out, covered with cool towel and a mist of vapor sprays over the body at whatever temperature he indicates and for the time he indicates, with Mrs. B in attendance. It is the most soothing, restful feeling imaginable. Then you are rolled onto another table, with heavy towels and left to dry. The massage of Olive Oil and camphor, I believe he said, follows.
7.00 for the first and5 following. He said he “did not know what advantage would be in using the Pine Oil rub over what he used and he did not know of any special value of Witch-hazel.” In other words he felt that his method was not open for any improvement. I said I did not pretend to know why or How the things recommended would be of special benefit, but I had seen the diagnoses work for others so completely that there was no question in my mind they would for me if I could find some one willing to give them as indicated. So I tried it out and it is a very superior vapor massage. It would not take the place of Osteopathic adjustment. Dr. Barger, 1125 Bucannon St. NW Washington.I found a little electric stove which belongs to a glass coffee drip and with that as my heater I have my Fume bath organized and will let you know what the results if any, after I try it out a week or so…
Now it is getting late and I am finding this 9 hour plus two more in route add up into pretty long days, and of course a lot of grumping about it as only about half of the people in my office really work, and the other half already were working only half the time, because of lack of work… The added hour of loafing does not make good sense in anyones language, SOooOOoo??
I hope this finds you all rested and well and happy.
Lovingly [2970]
R5. 8/16/44 EC’s letter:
Miss [2970] Washington, D.C.
Dear Miss [2970]
Thanks a lot for yours of the 9th, and for your writing the letter to Hugh Lynn. I forwarded it on to him when it was received.
Yes, I had a very good vacation, and think I got some work done that was needed for some time, but came home not feeling any too good - in fact, I have been home a week and haven’t yet been able to get back to work, and unless some great changes come about, it will be some days yet.
I am sending you the little booklet about Study Groups. I am glad that you are considering organizing a Group. Five or six is an excellent number to try to work with, and I am in hopes you will be able to carry on just like you want to. Know, if there is anything that we can do, we will be most happy to try to help out. I believe the little program that is set out in this booklet, prepared by Miss Wynne, is about the best, so far as we have found, and if there is anything that you want to know, write to her direct, here at the office. She has charge of the Weekly Letter, as well as the Bulletin and Study Group work.
Yes, we often find quite a number who have improved on osteopathy chiropractic, physiotherapy?], but it doesn’t always show the results as a good osteopath does. It sounds like quite an interesting cabinet that he has. The information has suggested, and we built one here, once, at the hospital, a cabinet for such a bath, but a Fume Bath, in which various types of medication could be given, such as Oil Spray using Olive Oil or Peanut Oil and Witch Hazel, Iodine or Atomidine, and such other things, in most cases have proven most helpful. The Fume Bath ought to be quite good, even applied in something like you suggest. That is something of the same character as have been used in some of the cabinets that have been made.
Thanks a lot for letting us hear from you, and with every good wish and love from all here,
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce EC:gp
R6. 7/1/45 [2970]‘s letter [First page of this letter is in Life Reading [2970-1]]:
Now for a few nibblets on the results of the Physical reading. These may or not be of any value, but they can at least be a bit more definite.
I did have the osteopathic treatments as advised, the Vapor baths and massage I did not find such that I could take without losing too much time at work or some of them I visited I did not like the appearance of the place and was afraid of unsanitary conditions… So I started inventing.
My osteopath explained something of the lymphatic system, its functions and locations to enable me to give myself a fairly good stimulating massage after my bath each morning and evening. These improved in value and effect as my hands got better and stronger, at first the rubbing was very painful for sore hands and arms. However my reading said this type of stimulation was very essential to clearing up the arthritic like soreness in hands, arms and legs. That is was due to lack of proper functioning of lymph in throwing off certain poison, this I have seen in many reports on causes and cures for arthritis and rheumatism also. The warm soak of ten minutes, a good soap rub, rinse and cool shower, night and morning, were not Mr. Cayces reading, but this I find is good to prepare me for the 5 minute massage.
For the Witch-hazel vapor baths, which were recommended, I did not find anyplace where they would give this, or in fact knew what it was. So I found a vaporizer which is used for treating croup etc, a little electric gadget which will make steam out of water and whatever other liquid is put into it. the tent I made by hanging a sheet up over a line. This made low enough that I could sit on an ordinary kitchen chair, which would not be harmed by the steam bath along with me. The opening in the tent allowed me to leave my head outside and read a book which I managed to rig up a- la- Rube-Goldberg. Of course I did put the little electric steamer under the tent along with me and the chair. I used a mixture of half and half witch-hazel and water.
Altogether the results have been very good. I have continued to work with the heavy books, which I thought might be responsible for my trouble. But my arms are entirely free from the soreness, and no soreness in knee joints. Since I started this treatment, and after the 12 or 15 osteopathic treatments, I have done the rest for myself, and still continue the Baths, exercise, massage, walks but not the vapor baths. It has been about a year now since I had the Physical Reading.
R7. 1/29/53 Report:
The reason for seeking this physical reading was that severe pain had ben bothering me in arms especially - fingers, elbows and some in the legs - apparently in the joints but still no stiffness of the joints just severe pains at times…Doctors called it rheumatism. Doctors had advised me that this might be due to the work of handling the large books which were used for the filing of the photographs in War Dept., where I was working at the time…
General health seemed good but do remember that several years before I had a severe case of Psoriasis. Several kinds of treatment such as soda baths, starch baths etc etc were given all increasing the condition if anything…finally osteopathic treatments with salts cleaning both ex and internal cleared up the condition… Think was given some advice about diet but do not remember what it was.
The above is only connection I can find with the reading reference to the condition at times producing “rash” - after the condition cleared I had not been subject to returns of that or other rashes. But this in its origin may have been due to the condition which he found.
The condition which really was causing me worry was the small growth over the eye, on the lid, which had continued for several years, sore at times and growing, very slowly but refusing to dissolve by any of the salves or treatments that I had tried - just applications of ointments etc… But since it continued to bother me I wanted to know what it was and if it should be worked in by surgeon etc…
The sleeplessness had been bothering me though not to an alarming extent, but since my work was heavy and exacting
- as every one’s was during these war conditions, I did not want it continuing since felt it might cause serious trouble
- and might be the cause of lack of energy which I had always had to such an abundance… And with the special work of handling the Horror pictures of War constantly I knew there was being put upon my nerves a very heavy load - I was in the habit of spending the wakeful times in reading and that mostly on metaphysics of some sort - and friends gleefully advised me that I was doing entirely too much study along these lines and “no body can stand” such etc etc suggesting that it would cause a mental crack up - the idea did amuse me but for that reason I ask about the danger of so much study along this line…
The entire lack of out of door exercise, due to the extremely long hours of work and getting to work - had resulted in that ugly “matronly spread” in the middle which prompted the request for an exercise for the “mid section”.
I did not find it possible to follow my reading just as outlined, and in about one years time of trying to get the suggestions carried out properly, I began to massage myself all over with Witch Hazel, giving special attention to the emonctry [emunctory?] centers. This is still used as a part of my daily routine. The growth on the eye had been quite evident for a matter of ten years - it would come and go but never responded to treatment. After using the castor oil for a period of two months, the growth completely disappeared. Did not extract teeth. I did follow through with the suggestions for the eyes, to the point of emphasizing the diet suggestions, and felt that my eyes were helped, though I still wear my glasses. As a matter of fact, I followed everything in the reading that I could do for myself, with the exception of the exercise for the stomach. This created a soreness, and since I was not able to get the rest of the reading as outlined, thought it best to leave this off. I began by walking about one mile a day and became much improved gradually.
