-
GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes - we have the body here, [2994].
-
Now, while conditions are rather serious, they are long standing, and the condition has become progressive, - we find that, with a great deal of care and patience, and persistence, the body MAY be able to care for itself - and to engage in activities that would be more in keeping with its purposes for its entering this material plane.
-
First, the attitudes of the body must be considered. While at times there have been hopes, these have gradually faded; and the body has at many times become very antagonistic to all that would pertain to a spiritual or mental attitude that would be helpful.
-
Resignation to the conditions does not necessarily mean patience on the part of the body. Know, deep within self, that God is not mocked. And while to self in the present these conditions may not appear to be results of thine own self, - whose body is afflicted? Thy body is indeed the temple of the living God. What manner of worship hast gone on, then, in the REAL body? Not the physical being, that at present is hindered by pathological conditions, illnesses, lack of the ability of locomotion, lack of the activity of the organs that function to bring the physical conditions for carrying on, and the ability to reproduce themselves in themselves.
-
For, each anatomical structure, each atom, each vibration of each organ, must be able to rebuild itself - if there will be the returning of the elements for its recuperation to any extent. There must be created, - in mind, in purpose, in body, - those influences and forces that will resuscitate life itself in each cellular unit of the body.
-
These activities must begin within self as for a purpose, as for hope, as for desire. Not as boastful, not as egotistical, but that each word, each act, each hope, each element of activity, is to be selfless and unto the glory of Creative Forces, or God.
-
If this, then, becomes to the body as but sounding brass, forget it!
-
But know, He IS the Giver of life. He IS life, in thee. And if there is the seeking, if there is the belief, if there is the ACTING - in mind, in body - to SUBDUE the earth, the material disturbances - there may be added many days yet of a USEFUL service in the vineyard of thy Maker, to the glory of thy Brother, the Christ; who gave Himself that ye might have intercession with the Father, through just such circumstances in body and mind as has overtaken thee in the present.
-
That is the beginning, then; thy attitude.
-
In the physical, then, we have many changes that are to be wrought. Many of those things that have become dormant are to become active again, through the limbs, through the nerves, through the activities of the organs to coordinate with the life plasm itself that keeps the body-entity alive, that makes the body even aware - not only of its physical disability but of regrets, the feelings of imposition upon the activities and the goodness and the grace and the mercy and the love of those FOR whom the body finds it would like to do, itself.
-
How, then, may the physical applications be brought about? These will require that there be daily attention, not only to this attitude that has been indicated.
-
And search ye the scriptures daily. For in them ye have promises that are THINE! In them ye have hope. In them ye have the promise of life, of eternal life, of the water of life, of the bread of life, that makes man free; free here and now - of disease, of disturbance in the various centers of those conditions where the lack of the activity of the liver in itself has taken from the body-forces those influences that will add to the nerve and muscular forces of the body the stamina, the strength.
-
But these are present in the earth through the application, then, in love, in patience, in persistence, in USING that thou hast daily in hand, and the next step may be given thee.
-
Begin with these:
-
Daily - when preparing the body for bed of evening - bathe thoroughly, especially along the spine, with quite warm water; not to blister nor to overheat it, but so as to open the pores of the body-forces along the ganglia of the cerebrospinal system that takes up from that assimilated through the body the life forces themselves.
-
Then apply packs of Glyco-Thymoline; three or four thicknesses of cotton cloth well saturated with Glyco-Thymoline, of sufficient length to extend along the length of the spine, and especially over the area of the hips. Then over this same area, on top of the Glyco-Thymoline pack, apply packs of salt. Prepare these packs in a pad that may be warmed inside an oven; not too thick with the salt, but sew it in the sack so as to be easily handled and applied so as to become a portion of the body itself. When this is cooled, it may be taken off.
-
THEN massage the body thoroughly with Pure Peanut Oil, all the body will absorb, into the whole length of the spine, especially across the lumbar and sacral areas, and down the limbs to the toes. Not just daubed on, but gently, patiently, massage this into the muscular forces.
-
Begin and, daily, eat beets, carrots. Eat these daily. Prepare them in varied forms, and with the beets eat the tops also - well cooked. These may be prepared in various ways and manners, but never take them with vinegar or acetic acid preparations.
-
Do add the vitamin B and B-complex. Add it, for this body, in the B-1 Complex.
-
Eat plenty of fish and all sea foods. Do not take it so often for it to become obnoxious to the body, but do take all of these.
-
After all of this has been kept up - all of it - for some ten weeks, we will give further instructions.
-
In massaging the spine and across the hips and the limbs, do so with a gentle, circular motion.
-
And, most of all, keep that attitude indicated. And study the Book - to show thyself approved unto Him.
-
Pray daily; not for self, but to be used as a channel of manifestation of the mercy of God; that ye may glorify Him - not man, not others, but glorify God as manifested in the Christ.
-
We are through.

(5/12/43 GD’s note: When these treatments have been followed for ten weeks, let us know so we may make an appointment for a Check Physical Reading to give further instructions. Perhaps it would be better to let us know as soon as you start the treatments, when the ten weeks will be up, so we can make the appointment that far in advance - to be sure that we get it at the proper time.
Under separate cover we are sending you two little booklets which we feel you might find helpful: A little book of AFFIRMATIONS, and THE LAST SUPPER.)
Reports
Reports & Follow-up
R1. 5/23/43 Wife’s letter to EC: “I’m sorry to be so long with my reply to the reading. My husband was reluctant to start it, or even to agree to it. He has now agreed, and we will proceed according to your directions when and if we can get the peanut oil. I shall write you if we are unable to procure it.
“His appetite is so poor that he cannot take the beets and carrots as yet. The B-1 Complex he has been receiving for two years. I have ordered the oil but the drug company would give me no satisfaction whatever about obtaining it.”
R2. 5/28/43 EC’s letter to [2994]‘s wife: “Thank you for yours of the 23rd. I have been quite anxious regarding Mr. [2994]. There is so much indicated in his reading that he must do himself, and one as tired of everything as he is, as he must be, it isn’t very easy for him to make up his mind to put up a fight, and I have wondered if he would. Much of the suggestion may sound unnecessary, but the experience of years has taught us each word almost has a meaning for him if he will use it. And I believe he will get help.
“Thank you for letting us hear, and can we be of help, please don’t hesitate to call on us. I am sure it is not a cure all, but the information takes a person where they are, and if they will work at it, something happens that is worthwhile.
“Thanking you…”
R3. 6/1/43 Wife’s letter to EC: “Word has come to me today that through no source is pure peanut oil obtainable. We are therefore at a standstill. I am wondering if there might be some substitute we might use.
“As my husband seems at least agreed to try your treatment, I feel that failure at this point would be bad, perhaps causing a relapse into an even deeper melancholy than before.
“I would welcome any suggestion you might have on this new problem…”
R4. 6/4/43 EC’s letter to [2994]‘s wife: “I have yours of the 2nd. I suppose you are disturbed by such a report about peanut oil, but I think you can get it by ordering direct from the Planters Peanut Company, Suffolk, Virginia. That is where most of it is made. I feel sure you can get it there.
“I hope so and that all goes well for Mr. [2994]…”
R5. 8/44 She sent a change of address.
R6. 7/60 In Dr. Pahnke’s breakdown of 69 multiple sclerosis cases from the Edgar Cayce records he classified Case [2994] in Group II.
Background
Background
B1. 1/31/43 Letter from Wife: “My husband is seriously ill, hopelessly so, according to all medical opinions. He is confined to bed and the condition is paralytic. He has been really ill for almost two years. He is now thirty-five.
“I am a book buyer and so received word of your forthcoming book. At once I obtained and read most carefully an advance copy. I am deeply impressed and am writing you at once for information about everything pertaining to a reading for him.
“He is under a specialist’s care. I have consulted no one about writing you. I told my husband about you but his depressed state prevents any interest or active desire to subject himself to further tests, etc., which accompany any change. However, he is willing for me to write you. This is all therefore on my own responsibility.
“I have long felt that there is somewhere an answer to his trouble, and I have also a deep determination that the answer be found that he must live! So it seemed God’s finger pointing to you for me.
“Somewhere Mr. Sugrue points out that some come with faith, some as a last resort. I come with both, but believe me I would have come to you sooner had I known of you. I pray God I am not too late.”
B2. 4/4/43 Letter from Wife: “My husband has now become interested in your work with regards to himself and is most anxious that you give him a physical reading.
“He is very ill in bed with a sclerosis condition, steadily growing worse and beyond the knowledge of our doctors.”
B3. 4/14/43 Letter from Wife: “I am returning the application and money to you with the wish that you do give my husband the reading he desires as soon as you are able.
“We both appreciate your thoughtfulness in returning our money, but we feel we should have whatever help you can give us and we know you will do so as soon as you are able. We realize your time must be over-full, but our situation is so all-important to us that we feel we should avail ourselves of anything you can do.”
B4. 4/22/43 Letter from Wife: “I wish to assure you that the time set is perfectly agreeable, and to assure you of our gratefulness to you. We will endeavor to keep that time as you suggest. My husband has become much interested in you and your work. I’m sure since Mr. Sugrue’s book has been launched, that many demands are being made upon your time and that your responsibilities have increased. We are not expecting the impossible. We are desirous of discovering whether there is any point which may have been overlooked by our doctors and any help which may be given Mr. [2994]. As I have told you, he is slowly but steadily losing ground and is more than anxious to find some means toward recovery in some measure.
“There are no special questions. We want a reading on his condition with any suggestions you may have.”
