This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 15th day of May, 1943, in accordance with request made by the self - Mrs. [3002], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research and Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by the book THERE IS A RIVER.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno.]
Time of Reading 11:00 to 11:15 A. M. Eastern War Time. New York City.
-
GC: You will have before you the body and enquiring mind of [3002], … N.Y.C., who seeks information, advice and guidance, in a Mental and Spiritual reading, as to her health and certain emotional problems. You will give the entity any information which may be enlightening and inspirational, in helping her to work out these problems. You will answer any questions that may be asked:
-
EC: Yes, we have the body, the enquiring mind of that entity now calling herself [3002].
-
In giving that which as we find would be most helpful and beneficial, those physical disorders that have been a part of the experience of the entity should be analyzed.
-
There has been long standing a pressure that exists in the centers of the cerebrospinal system, associated with the organs of the sensory system. And it is of such a nature that at various times through the body’s experience hindrances have occurred to the organs of the sensory reactions in the body.
-
There have been periods of disturbed hearing, and also of what might be called imaginary hearing. While not imagination to the body, nor as a fact as imagination, it has appeared to others as imagination of the body. And such discussions that have arisen have brought those periods when the body, as a protection for itself, has desired to be alone.
-
Also there are periods when these affectations are to the eyes, to the speech, even to the senses of touch or feeling.
-
As may be asked, why these variations?
-
Remember, all activity or emotion in the body is as a vibratory reaction from one portion of the body to another.
It is as a system of sensitivenesses, that with any tautness as may come from an upset digestion, upset animation, - as conditions that arise from dis-ease of any nature through the system - causes the nerve impulses from ganglia to be magnified. And these cause, in these centers that are under distress, what may be termed short circuits.
-
Thus we have frustrations to the body, periods of melancholia, and the opposite; periods of wanting to cry, and periods of excess of emotions.
-
All of these have been at times controlled by direct suggestion.
-
They are mechanical in their nature, however. Thus, there is the need for there to be mechanical (osteopathic) adjustments. These will require some little time, and should be rather in periods of three weeks each.
-
During a three-week period take at least six treatments. Then leave off these for two weeks, and then repeat, see? Keep up these series of treatments and rest periods in this manner, and these will change - gradually the whole outlook of the body.
-
In the mental and spiritual, take a guide - as of this nature:
-
Know in Whom ye believe. There are those forces that may arise from His Word. Study, then, thoroughly, the 30th of Deuteronomy - as applied to self. Analyze self in the light of that as may be obtained by application of self in those tenets and truths presented in the 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th of John.
-
And ye will have that guide, the divine in self, where He has promised to meet thee within thine own temple.
-
But, DO have that temple attuned to correct consciousnesses by the physical adjustments; else the lights often become dim. And these are the sources of the frustrations, the sources of those conditions indicated. But when ye abide in His presence, and He in thine own consciousness, ye will seek to apply self in aiding others.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) What has been the cause, since childhood, of the frightful spells of tension and pressure in my head? (A) This pressure, as indicated, is existent in the areas where there are the sensory nerve forces - the upper dorsal and in the 3rd cervical. Have these adjustments made by one in sympathy with the information through this channel, and you will find these will materially aid.
THEN make the greater adjustment in thy spiritual and mental self through the application of those tenets and truths in the references given, in thy relationships to others.
- (Q) What causes the great fear of having people, even those I love best, near me at such times? (A) As indicated and described as to how, under those disturbances and emotions, there is the seeking to save self. Thus the desire to be alone. But when these pressures are corrected, and with the mental adjustments for spiritual avenues of reactions, we should find greater assistance.
It will require a little time. Have at least three to six series of three weeks each of the treatments, and as many rest periods.
After at least the second or third series of treatments, begin then with the study of the scripture and the analyzing of self in the manner indicated.
- We are through for the present.

Reports
Reports & Follow-up
R1. 5/19/43 [3002]‘s wire: “Believe diagnosis is correct. Have had severe bronchitis but will follow your advice when recovered.”
R2. 10/4/43 Dr. George N. Coulter, D.O.’s Report re [3002]:
“Mrs. [3002]: Findings, as given in the reading, verified by physical examination. In addition, her history revealed an unsettled childhood, overshadowed by fear a good part of the time.
“Treatment administered as advised and she has made some improvement. Her chief symptom of tension is not as great and attacks are not as frequent. Treatment started June 18, 1943.”
R3. 11/26/43 [3002]‘s letter to EC:
”…Last Monday I had my thirtieth treatment with Dr. Coulter which completed my fifth 3-weeks session. I was not able to begin my treatment at once upon the receipt of your outline, as an attack of bronchitis and my daughter’s wedding intervened.
“Dr. Coulter is such a fine type of man and I think he is also an excellent osteopath.
“About sixty percent of the time I got some relief from the tension from half and hour to two hours. The relief though is never sustained and I invariably have a bad day after the treatment.
“However, I realize that my case is of very longstanding and consequently difficult, and I may add that I have never had any better results from other doctors.
“I have been very interested in your Bible selections. I am somewhat familiar with the New Testament and I have often thought that some sort of God given basic faith is the only reason I am here today at all. My faith burns very low when I am very fearful and sick, but that is not God’s fault. It is rather something within me that has not captured the full rhythm of life. I had never read the thirtieth chapter of Deuteronomy, and I am particularly interested in verses 11 through 14. I have for very many years had an awareness of their content, even though I have been so little able to put them really into practice.
“I was tremendously interested in the response you have had from your book There Is A River] and the article in Coronet. I am sure your readings are a by-product of a profound spiritual development within yourself. Otherwise the original gift would have long since been denied you.
“In a way, I feel very sorry to hear that you have in your great desire to help people, decided to take on more readings than ever before for the tax upon you must be very heavy.
“Dr. Coulter speaks so beautifully of you that I am sure that in a good many cases if people could reach you just for a little, that it would help almost as much as anything.
“Hoping some day to have the pleasure of meeting you myself…”
R4. 12/6/43 EC’s letter to [3002]:
”…I want to thank you very much for yours of the 26th. I note with a great deal of interest what you have to say about the treatments and results you have been able to obtain so far. It is just as you said, I think, it may require a little rest period, and then continuing on with the treatments from Dr. Coulter. Next time you see him speak to him though about having a Check reading. Let’s see how well he has been doing what was suggested, or if there are other suggestions to be made, or what we should do next. Quite a number of cases through the years, we found it necessary to have Check readings several times, but we would be directed more by the doctor’s word, than what we had to say. I thank you also for your words about reading the New Testament with those verses in Deuteronomy. Of course, the real help comes from within yourself. The doctor can only help us attune our own bodies to the infinite and if we allow that to be done in us, we can help a lot. I would like very much if it were possible for you to come to Virginia Beach. I would like to have a talk with you.
“I appreciate Dr. Coulter speaking so kindly of me. Let us hear from you again and what the doctor thinks about the Check reading. I would like to have it for you if he thinks we should and we will fit it in some way.
“I hope we won’t take on so many that we can’t do justice and give the best of service to everyone. It is only my anxiety to try to help everyone…”
R5. 12/31/43 [3002]‘s letter to EC:
”…I have completed the maximum of treatments recommended in your original outline. However, you suggested recently that I continue the treatments for the present, so I am resuming them after a two week rest period next Thursday. At that time I will ask Dr. Coulter to make out a list of questions.
“My family doctor who has known me for twenty-five years believes that my trouble arises from a profound disturbance of the circulation induced by shock in my very early life.
Since the circulation is controlled by the sympathetic nervous system he has only been able to give me temporary relief through electricity to about the same extent as Dr. Coulter was with osteopathy.
“Do you agree with my doctor’s diagnosis? I am definitely inclined to think he is right.
“About twenty-two years ago I was considerably benefitted by drinking the water at White Springs, Florida. It apparently has some quite unusual property. Would that water help me now?…”
R6. 1/28/44 [3002]‘s letter to EC:
”…There is another question I would like to ask in my reading. I at first thought I would not bother you with it, but on thinking it over and discussing it with Dr. Coulter who seemed to think that an answer might be found due to my trouble, I will go into the matter.
“About eight years ago after having had sound teeth all my life with virtually no pyorrhea, I suddenly developed a strange infection in all my upper teeth and two lover teeth. Abscesses formed and in addition to this, there was a black discharge around the gums. Three dentists saw the condition and none of them had ever seen a case like it before. My own dentist reported his findings to the State Dental Association but they could not throw any light on the situation either. I had to have all my upper teeth out and eventually the two lower teeth that were involved. In the last year I have had an intermittent infection of another tooth similar to the original infection, but without the black discharge.
“Could you tell me in the reading what has caused this condition?
“I know how busy you are, Mr. Cayce, and I really dislike very much plying you with another question. However, it does seem advisable to check on the matter now…”
P.S. “I asked Dr. Coulter if he wanted to ask any questions. I don’t know whether he has written you or not. I am now in a period between treatments and have not seen Dr. Coulter since Monday.”

Background
Background
B1. 3/28/43 [3002]‘s letter:
”…I have just finished reading Mr. Sugrue’s delightful and inspiring book about you and your work. I really almost feel as though I know you a little. My mother’s family were Kentuckians and the ones I have known were a warmhearted lot. Hopkinsville was named for an ancestor of mine.
“The story of your life so completely corroborates what I have always felt about people who have genuine psychic power in a greater or lesser degree. I have known several and they have all been people of the highest integrity and outstandingly kind and normal. I believe any true power would be denied if it was misused. It is too bad that fakes and charlatans have kept the world skeptical.
“I consider your gift to be a perfectly natural phenomena, though something as yet not understood. You have always used your power for the good of humanity and it seems tragic to me that doctors and scientists are not studying it more closely and cooperating with it. Your cures are a proof of the validity of your work. I noticed in a reading you said infantile paralysis was a virus and doctors have just found that out. Your readings might reveal a cure for cancer, and many other things that might be of incalculable benefit to mankind.
“I would like very much to have a health reading for myself. I am now 51 years old and since very early childhood I have had frightful spells of tension and pressure in my head. Often when the attacks are very severe, my thinking is blocked and my vision impaired. During these periods I often have a great fear of having people, even those I love best, near me.
“In the course of my life I have been to doctors, osteopaths and a psychologist, without getting any relief. If a reading revealed some clue to my trouble and a suggestion for even partially curing it, it would be an absolute Godsend to me.
“I could not go to Va. Beach now, but will follow any instructions you give me for a reading at home…”
B2. 4/13/43 [3002]‘s letter:
”…I shall be glad to take May 15th, 10:30 to 11:30, for my reading, and will follow the instructions on page 19 of the booklet. I expect to be here in my own home on that date.
“I don’t believe that I have any particular questions to ask. I have certain emotional problems, but I realize that they must be worked out primarily by me. I feel that the reading may be enlightening and inspirational…”
