This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of Dr. Guy Beckley Stearns (M.D.), New York City, this 9th day of December, 1927, in accordance with request made by Dr. Guy Beckley Stearns via Messrs. Morton H. Blumenthal and David E. Kahn.

1. MHB: Now, the body is assuming its normal forces and will be able and will give such information as is desired of it at present. The body physical will be perfectly normal and will give that information now. Now, you will have before you the body of [3007], …, New York City. You will go over this body carefully and give us the conditions you find at the present time, giving a thorough and detailed diagnosis, giving the cause of the conditions existing at the present time and the relief and cure for same. You will speak slowly and distinctly. You will answer what questions I may ask.

2. EC: We have the body here. Now we find there are those conditions that have to do with the functioning of glands and the reflex conditions that these physical defects have with the body, causing disturbances that are changeable in their nature. Hence the subtleness of the condition. These then are the conditions as we find them with this body of Mrs. [3007] that we are speaking of.

3. First, in the blood supply, the effects as are produced here show that the reaction in the system is of that nature causing an acid in the system and that these reactions to various portions of the system give those reflexes especially in the eliminations.

4. In the nerve system, here we find much that may be said as respecting those vibrations or those of the impulse produced in the system from pressures in the lower lumbar region and these, with those conditions brought about in other portions of the body, give off those vibrations for the body producing the distress.

5. In the functioning of the organs, many reflexes occur, some not of the secondary nature. These are seen especially in the action of the locomotaries in their reflex and in the assimilation produced in the central nervous system.

6. To meet the needs of these conditions here, as we would find:

First, relieve that pressure as is produced in the lumbar and sacral region so that the reflexes and impulses from this portion of the body would coordinate with the central nervous system, and apply, for the replenishing of those conditions produced in the glands in their effect to the body, those properties and would be found in chloride gold.

8. These will bring the better condition for this body.

9. Do that.

10. (Q) How serious is this condition from which this patient suffers? (A) Rather that of the tedious drawn-out condition than that of the specific or of the acute condition.

11. (Q) Is she likely to recover? (A) Were these conditions, as we find, accorded and the vibrations kept up that would so increase the vibratory forces of sympathetic and of the glands as secrete for the proper replenishing of the system, so that assimilation takes place and so that the reaction of the body would be nearer normal.

12. (Q) Which part of the glandular system is affected? (A) That which runs through the entire system with the base at the lower portion of the brain, hence the reflexes in many of these, and the pressure in the lower lumbar causes this dissemination throughout the rest of the body.

Applying heat to the body with such manipulation would release those pressures.

Apply the gold in small quantities, as that of 15 grains to 15 ounces of water, and give only one to two drops to begin with. We will see reactions to the whole system. Do that.

13. (Q) Manipulations to the lower lumbar meaning just what? (A) With the relaxing of the lower portions of the body with heat, the manipulation would have the effect of stimulation and releasing pressure produced in the fourth dorsal or fourth lumbar and dorsal reflex in this body.

14. (Q) Should the heat be applied with diathermy or with hot water bags or wet, or how? (A) The wet heat will cause better response.

15. (Q) What diet is best suited to this case? (A) Preferably that of the vegetable that carries much of the replenishing without creating acidity, and these may be taken in small quantity and often.

16. (Q) Is it true, as has been diagnosed by physicians, that this is a malignant type and very likely to prove fatal? (A) Not malignant as yet, as we would see; rather that condition wherein there is improper incentive from pressure and from conditions as existing throughout the system of confined impulses, and release and rebuilding for glands would bring the result that would bring better condition - not a whole healing, a better condition, an easier condition for this body.

17. (Q) What is the mental status of this case? (A) The mental condition is as up and down. At times, hopeful in self. Again, very, very much opposite.

18. (Q) What is the origin of this case? What caused these conditions to come about? (A) This was produced by condition in pelvis and the reaction from the prenatal effects of conditions for the body. These combined brought about this, and then lesion formed causing pressure.

Do as given if we would bring the better condition for this body.

Dear Mr. Cayce,

Since you were here, I have been thinking of your reading, and it strikes me that the only fair way is for you, in some way, to get in touch with this case by your approach and see whether the remedy that I have already worked out by my test is as satisfactory as the one that was suggested in your reading.

My test occupied about an hour and a half of very strenuous work and these tests are almost always successful in benefiting patients. I am forced to the conclusion that many remedies are helpful but that only one can give the most help.

The remedy that was suggested in your reading was in the test that was made but did not come through on the reactions that I am using. Naturally, I wish to give her the benefit of that which I have found successful unless I have good reasons to expect something else to do greater good. In the matter of all other suggestions in the reading, they will be carried out. In fact, the patient had been already instructed along the lines of some of the suggestions made and the remedy that I worked out had already been given, and I am to have a second call tomorrow. I will not see the patient again until after New Year.

I have read with interest the printed matter that you sent and shall keep in touch with you. For the next two weeks I shall be taking a much needed rest.

In response to yours of the 14th, I would have written sooner but I understood you would be out of the city for some time, then the holidays coming on I have been quite busy.

I want to thank you very much for your letter, and assure you I would like to cooperate with you in any way you may deem the wisest and best to follow up the suggestions you make. I have been in hopes that I would be back in New York sometime this month, and then we might possibly have the opportunity to take this matter up again - Or, if you would care for me to undertake to give a reading and just have that question asked, as to whether or not the remedy you have worked out would be helpful and beneficial as that given in the reading, I shall be glad to undertake that. It will be necessary though for you to give me the name of the individual and the day we took that reading, for I don’t remember and haven’t a record of it.

R4. 1/10/28 Letter from Dr. Guy Beckley Stearns, M.D.: “The patient whom you saw was Mrs. [3007], …, N.Y.C. I first saw her December 9, 1927 which was the day that you made your reading. The remedy that I worked out was staphisagria. This helped her for some time but on January 3rd I worked her out again; the former remedy having ceased to help and supradrenal came out; the report is that this is helping her.

She was having much pain and the pain is a great deal better; she, herself, seems better.

“If you care to carry the experiment further, it will be indicated to have in mind the following questions:

“Are the remedies that are being worked out by my method as effective as those that come to you through your Reading?”

I feel a hesitancy in addressing you again. Circumstances have prevented me keeping in touch with you and the work that you were so kind as to offer us an opportunity to have some little part in (and apparently I have failed utterly); but just a note of explanation, and then if it suits your convenience to go further into this - from any angle - either from the patient in question or some other patient

• I am believing I am in position now to take it up and keep right along with you. And I would be very glad to do so, if you so desire.

You possibly gathered from my conversation when in your office that I was actually attempting to have builded an institution here at Virginia Beach where the phenomena as manifested thru me might be studied more closely, where it might be under the supervision of competent medical authorities, yet those in sympathy with the aim and purpose - apparently - of the phenomena itself. You may know also that there are various groups of individuals in various portions of the country who have been interested by the results they have obtained by carrying out, or following out, suggestions made for better conditions in their physical health; and as we are anxious to get this work started immediately, I have spent the greater part of the present year in visiting these various groups, in different parts of the country, and soliciting their help - morally and financially - toward the work, and I believe the actual erection of the building will begin in the next few weeks. Hence the seeming neglect to many of those who have at least expressed sympathy to the work we are trying to do.

The patient you saw has finally decided to have X-ray treatment, which, of course, takes her out of my care, so that further experiments are impossible.

I shall be glad to see you if you come to New York any time and will be interested in any progress you make or in any work that you do.

Dear Mr. Cayce,

I am sorry that I could not get to see you when you were in New York recently but I have not been well enough for quite a long time, to go out evenings and rarely in the daytime. I have often had you in mind since the time, several years ago, when you were in my office and made a reading for one of my patients [3007] who had Hodgkin’s disease. However, it was too late to help the patient. My interest in your work has remained fresh and Mr. Sugrue’s book has stirred up my interest again and stirred a thought that has been in the background of my mind for a long time. In your reading, you frequently recommend a “homeopathic remedy”. To the average individual who does not know Homeopathy, a homeopathic remedy is one that is given in small amounts. As a matter of fact, it is homeopathic only when it is so closely related to the patient that, if the patient were healthy and this remedy were given, it would cause the same type of symptoms that he is at present suffering from. In other words, the homeopathicity depends upon sensitiveness of the patient to that particular drug. The cures that come from a drug having a true homeopathic relationship are quite miraculous.

Hahnemann wrote an “Organon” which contained the basic principles of Homeopathy. This was translated a few years ago by C. E. Wheeler, M.D., of London, England, for publication by “Everyman’s Library”. I am sending you a copy of this to you and, if it is not presumptuous, I suggest that you put this under your pillow some night and allow it to tell you whatever it has to tell. I believe that your homeopathic prescriptions would be much more accurate because your subconscious would have come nearer to the spirit of Hahnemann.

If you would allow me, I would be glad to send you a Materia Medica of Hahnemann and also a photograph of a bust of Hahnemann that was made from a life mask. This bust was given by Hahnemann to Dr. J. A. Biegler who came to this country and practised in New Orleans. He gave it to his son. When Dr. Biegler died he left it to his Dr. Edmund Carleton and when Dr. Carleton died he left it to his son Spencer Carleton and when he died it came to me. A photograph of this bust might continue the impression which was imparted to the life mask and also to the bust he handed to Dr. Biegler. With this photograph you could come closer in contact with the spirit of what he taught.

There are comparatively few among the physicians who graduate from homeopathic colleges who are truly homeopathic. The International Hahnemannian Assn. is made up of the simon pure users of the homeopathic method, the [that] through them, the spirit of Homeopathy has survived but as perhaps you know, there legally cannot be any special school of medicine any longer. At present, nearly all homeopathic hospitals have been closed as such and only one homeopathic college remains and that one is so overwhelmed by requirements other than homeopathic that it is altogether losing its identity.

Please accept from me in Organon, translated by C. E. Wheeler, who is a follower of Hahnemann in England. I will try to find an old Materia Medica which has been used by the good homeopathists, if possible.

My Dear Dr. Stearns;-

Thank you so very much for yours of the 17th. Feel very much complimented, Dr., that you remember me. Have wished often when was in New York that might run in and have a chat with you - recall with great pleasure the few times have had the opportunity to talk with you, and always with help to myself am sure.

Do appreciate your thought of me and your wish that I have a copy of the “Organon” - will be most happy to have it and trust may be able to use as you suggest. If by same, may be able to serve better those who seek help through this channel, I realize of myself can do nothing, only the spirit of Truth may work in and through me.

And the Materia Medica - that will be wonderful and the photograph. THANK you, Dr., is all that I can say. Shall strive to use what ever you may send in a service to my fellow man - for others. Lord, that I Pray to be of a help to others. Can’t tell you just how much I appreciate your thinking of me and wishing me to have these things. Do hope you will be feeling better soon and not too distant a time you will come down and see us here and have the chance to have a good long talk with you.

Didn’t know about the change in schools and etc. You see, I have never known just why the information has given what is called Homeopathic remedies, unless it was the first real scientific interest was shown by one of that school and the Research Society in Boston in 1910.

Dear Mr. Cayce,

Thank you for your good letter of March 19th, wherein you expressed your willingness and desire to get in touch with the homeopathic method of practice. After I sent you the Organon, I also had sent to you “A New Synthesis”, which is out last summing-up of the homeopathic principles and their relation to known aspects of physics. I will have a photograph made of the bust and mail to you shortly. In the meantime, I extend you my best wishes and gratitude that you appear to be as eager as I am to enter into this research.

P.S. Under separate cover I am sending you a homeopathic book published in 1953 by one of the good early homeopathists and another one, published in 1877, by another of our best homeopathists. The bindings of these books, as you will note, are broken but they are tied together so that they will not fall apart. They represent the spirit of the best men who were responsible for the growth of the homeopathic movement. Hempel’s and particularly Dunham’s represents the real spirit of Hahnemann, and the meaning of Homeopathy. Unless you wish to, you need not untie them. They are dusty, just as they have been stored away because of lack of space in my office working-library They are, however, choice books, rare and hard to obtain, and I should like to have them back after you have had them a sufficient time to absorb what they can give you, as I must return them to my library-shelves. I am enclosing the amount necessary to return them, prepaid and insured, when you send them back.

I believe something of great value may come from this experiment. At any rate, it lands you in the early part and middle of the best period of homeopathic school. Slowly, oh, so very slowly, medicine is swinging around toward this approach. The research which I have been carrying on for forty odd years is for the purpose of bringing the homeopathic method into the field of science and I believe that there will come through you some message that will open up the field in which we are blindly searching for a certain missing factor. We almost have it but it is still elusive. Know that I deeply appreciate your willingness to enter into this experiment. G.B.S.

• or to look over “The New Synthesis”, but will - first opportunity. Am being kept so busy answering requests for appointments, have little time for much else, but will certainly take the time to try and get something from the books being sent.
