This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 21st day of May, 1943, in accordance with request made by the self - [3017], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research and Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by the book, THERE IS A RIVER.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno.]
Time of Reading 10:55 to 11:10 A. M. Eastern War Time. New York City.
-
GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions; also suggestions for help and relief of this body, answering the questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes, we have the body, [3017].
-
As we find, there are many conditions to be taken into consideration in giving that which may be a helpful influence for this body.
-
There are pathological disturbances, psychological effects, and there are those varied reactions that may be part of the experience in application for helpful benefits.
-
The reaction is apparent in the manner in which the fluid in the eye causes the dilation of the pupil. This is the definite disturbance in the present.
-
But the whole of the general physical health, the age, and the reactions are a part of the experience also.
-
The applications that would be beneficial must constitute, then, that which may build up the general health of the body, and that which will react specifically (from the anatomical standpoint) to the optic nerve from those centers in the spinal system, from which the body-forces receive the replenishing and rebuilding activities through the circulation. We refer not only to the central circulation but to the superficial, or the sympathetic, or the mucous membrane activities; as to the radiation, as to the absorption, as to the use of same.
-
In these manners, then, we find that a stimulation to those areas from which these portions of the body receive their impulse - the optic nerve, the eye socket itself - will allay the disturbance and may check same, if there is due consideration given as to how much the body uses the eyes in the present.
-
We would be mindful also that certain diets contribute their part, so that what is assimilated by the body through the blood force and to the nerve energy that is supplied, carries from certain characters of food those elements that work with the body forces.
-
As we find, kidneys - to be sure - are partially involved, or rather would it be said that the glands that lie just above the kidneys are involved in the general condition.
-
Then:
-
At that area just above the kidneys, and at the 2nd and 3rd dorsal, we would apply a stimuli in the form of Glyco-Thymoline packs - this for about an hour each day. Use three to four thicknesses of cotton cloth well saturated in the Glyco-Thymoline. The oils in this will stimulate the body activities there, so that the application of the low electrical forces - as may be had from the electrical vibrations for the body from the low Wet Cell Appliance, will be more effective.
-
For, with the Wet Cell Appliance we would use a mild solution of Gold; that there may be this stimuli vibratorially taken to the body as to aid nerve plasm, blood energies, and the activities of the external applications.
-
Make the charging solution of the Wet Cell Appliance rather strong. Use at least two pounds of the Copper Sulfate to a gallon and a half of distilled water.
-
Use at least two poles for the solution, one nickel and one copper.
-
In the chemicals, use six drams of Zinc and one and one-half ounces of Sulfuric Acid C.P.
-
The Gold Solution is to pass through the nickel pole, in the proportions of one grain Chloride of Gold to one ounce of distilled water. The nickel plate, through which this solution passes vibratorially, would be attached to the body over the umbilical and lacteal duct center, or - on this body - the hand’s breadth and one finger to the right from the navel center, and one finger up. There the larger nickel plate would be attached.
-
The small copper plate would be attached to the copper pole, and attached to the body at the 3rd, 4th - or between the 3rd and 4th cervical.
-
Make these attachments for thirty minutes each day.
-
At least half an hour before the Wet Cell Appliance is attached, apply the Glyco-Thymoline packs - or an hour before would be preferable.
-
Immediately following the use of the Appliance, massage with peanut oil the area along the spine, both that above the kidney AND in the upper dorsal; so that all will work together.
-
In the diet, - do include beets and beet tops often, also carrots, two to three times a week. The carrots may be taken raw or cooked, or alter them.
-
Do these for the better conditions for this body, [3017].
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Should the present treatment for the eye be continued? (A) Try these suggestions we have made here, for at least six weeks. Then if there isn’t an improvement, go back to the old treatment.
-
We are through with this reading.

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 6/3/43 [3017]‘s letter to EC:
“Please accept my thanks and appreciation for your reading. Among other things that our research has revealed is a method by which we can determine beforehand whether a remedy will be beneficial. Our technique appears to involve the same mechanism in the body as does your reading, only we use it in a little different manner. The body responds to the nearness of a curative remedy by way of its autonomic mechanism. This mechanism is more than the autonomic nervous system. As you know, the body maintains a certain tone as long as it is alive and this tone can be altered by materials that are helpful to the body at some distance away. In birds and fish, the response occurs at enormous distances from the source and enables them instinctively to know during migration periods where is their migrating field. At the proper season, birds and fish become aware of when and to what point they should migrate. You will find this referred to in A NEW SYNTHESIS, which I forwarded you. A patient will respond to a remedy by alteration of the tonus of his body as far as two hundred feet away and probably much farther.
“You are one of those rare people who can enter into the subjective stage of autohypnosis and come into actual contact with another individual’s autonomic mechanism and sense its needs. I was hoping, when I sent you the homeopathic books, that you could tap the homeopathic field of medicine and perhaps bring a message to us in connection with our research or find a curative remedy for myself. I would be able to determine as soon as I have obtained the material whether there came into your subconscious during your reading the latter. Perhaps my condition is incurable, although I cannot feel this to be true. Thus far I have failed to find the curative remedy.
“I have a feeling that you are going to get much further in this field from now on, and that as you do, this you will greatly enlarge your field of helpfulness. I will let you know what I find when I have obtained the samples and I want to keep in touch with your work from now on…”
P.S. “If you have finished with the two old homeopathic books that I sent to you on March 22nd, I will be glad to have them back, as I wish to send them to be rebound and put them back in my library. As I understand it, you can sleep with these books near you and absorb the essence of their context. Thank you again for your cooperation.”
R2. 6/5/43 EC’s letter to [3017]: “Thank you for yours of the 3rd. I do hope you will give the suggestion a try. I believe you will find something that will really help.
“Thank you many, many times for the books. I am returning the two old copies today. Thanks, too, for those you so kindly sent me. I appreciate them very much.
“Hoping to hear from you from time to time, and to see you the next time I am in New York…”
R3. 6/5/43 [3017]‘s letter to EC:
“In a previous letter, I mentioned the natural groups to which all of us belong. These are not exactly like blood groupings, although they appear to be based on some basic factor. There are eleven of them. Remedies also belong in the same groups and a person should always have a remedy that is in the group in which is the patient himself; that is, in the person’s own group. When ill, a person can go out of his group and then should have a remedy in the group in which he is at the time. Having these groups in your subconscious, it may be a valuable addition to the accuracy of what comes to you for patients. Enclosed is copy of the eleven groupings, showing the remedies belonging in each. [See Par. R4 below.]
“I would not like to practice medicine without knowing this because it has made a great difference in the quality of my own results.
“I will pass on to you other basic factors as they occur to me…”

B1. 3/26/43 [3017]‘s letter to EC: ”…I have a serious condition that threatens the loss of my right eye. It began six years ago and, steadily, year by year, has increased, in spite of our best efforts…
“I am enclosing a photograph of a bust of Hahnemann [Samuel Hahnemann? See Par. B2 below.]. This was made from a life-mask, in 1839 and is therefore a living likeness. Hahnemann himself gave this to a Dr. Biegler with his own hands. Dr. Biegler came to this country, practicing in New Orleans, and he was there during the cholera period. When he died, it went to his son, who practiced in Rochester. He was also an extra fine prescriber and a strict follower of Hahnemann’s method. When he died, it went to Dr. Edmund Carlton, who was the one who inducted me into homeopathy. When Edmund Carlton died, it went to his son, Spencer Carlton, and when he died, it came to me.
“I had a bronze bust made from this plaster bust and the photograph is from the plaster bust. Therefore, if what certain psychics say is true, there is something of Hahnemann in the photograph of this bust. At any rate he was a wonderful man and a seer. Through intuition and a lifetime of careful experimenting, he worked out the principles of homeopathy and developed a materia medica. Provings that he made are as sound today as they were when he made them.
“He was eighty years old at the time this bust was made and, if this chain of events of one hundred and eighty years is operative through your subconscious mind, a great revelation may come to us.
“I have a serious condition that threatens the loss of my right eye. It began six years ago and, steadily year by year, has increased, in spite of our best efforts. My complete bafflement, in my own case, started me thinking how I could get back to the root of my trouble through going to the root-sources of homeopathy itself. You came often in my mind, but I did not wish to trouble you. When I read Sugrue’s book, it suddenly came to me that you might make a contact with the source of all knowledge relating to the homeopathic approach to medicine. At any rate, keep all but the two old books, by Duncan and Hempel, as I could not replace them and they belong in my homeopathic library.
“Through forty years of concentrated effort, the group of which I am the head, has discovered the underlying physical and physiological attributes that are involved in the homeopathic medical approach. There is still a hazy curtain between our full perception and the full view of the factors involved in homeopathy…”
B2. This was [taken] from ORGANUM OF THE RATIONAL ART OF HEALING by Samuel Hahnemann:
Samuel Christian Friedrich Hahnemann, born in Saxony in 1755. Lived in Leipzig from 1789 until 1821, when he was forced to leave on account of the hostility of the apothecaries. Lived in Cothen, but later removed to Paris, where he continued his medical practice until his death in 1843.
B3. 4/3/43 EC’s letter to [3017]: “I wish to thank you very much for yours, sending me the photograph of the bust of Dr. Hahnemann. This is excellent, and I am glad to have same; also the books. I am kept very, very busy trying to answer all the letters coming to me from those who have read Sugrue’s story of my life and they are numerous.
“Doctor, we would be very glad to try and help if possible with your trouble, but the only thing is the law requires that we have a signed application for membership to the Association, and I do not know whether you would wish to do that or not. But you will know within your own self. But know we will be glad to try if you would care for me to do so.
“So I am enclosing a blank to use if you see fit. Please remember I do not have a membership fee from doctors or ministers, and have quite a number on our roll I assure you of each of these.
“Thanking you again and will return the books very soon now…”
B4. 4/8/43 [3017]‘s letter to EC:
“Enclosed is my application for membership. I am not marking either a request for a Physical or Life reading, but will leave everything to whatever comes through to you.
“As you do not receive membership fees from doctors or clergymen, I am sending to you a book on snowflakes. This is for you personally. These snowflakes were photographed during a period of fifty years by W. A. Bentley. As you will note, there is a photograph of him on the first page. I want you to open this frequently and observe the beauty of the flakes. Also note that no two are exactly alike. Note also how some of them, toward the end, suggest that the crystal form is modified by the emanations from the dormant life-forms in the ground. Note also that they are all six-sided, but that toward the end, there are a few which have developed to twelve sides, these taking forms that suggest flowers like the daisies. These forms suggest that a formative factor of the different plants dormant in the ground actually does influence the crystal pattern. Therefore, both patterns may have a similar origin.
“Regarding my eye: I have recently been treating the eye with the ‘oscilloclast.’ This is an apparatus that was designed originally by Dr. Albert Abrams of San Francisco, but the machine in use now is an improved modification of the original machine devised by those who are carrying on his work.
“As you will note, I am associated with this foundation. In fact, I established it. My suggestion is that when you have an opportunity, you simply go into your usual subjective state and leave it to your subconscious to reveal whatever it selects. If it is the most important thing and has to do with my health, that will be selected, or if it has to do with our work, let it be that. We are seeking a mechanical method for registering the energies with which we work and anything helpful would be gratefully received. I hope this programme will fit in with your research and that both of us will be spiritually enriched by the experience…”
B5. 5/15/43 [3017]‘s letter to EC:
“I and my immediate associates are looking forward to your reading on the 21st, and will be thinking of you between 10:30 and 11:30 A.M. I shall be greatly interested in whatever comes through to you, whether it be my own health or the work in which we are all interested, or the combination of the two.
“I note that in your readings there frequently comes through to you homeopathic remedies which, of course, is why I sent you the various homeopathic books, so that you will have been in contact with the source material of the best that is in homeopathy.
“Regarding the book of snowflakes, I hope you have enjoyed it. I open the book very often, as it gives me a great thrill to note that, although all snowflakes are six-sided, no two are exactly alike and very likely no two have ever been exactly alike from all time. They are bound to be six-sided because every molecule of water is composed one atom of oxygen and two of hydrogen. In the gas and liquid states, the water atom is three-sided, but when water chills and becomes solid, as it does in the snowflake, six atoms join together. The moment the temperature goes above thirty-two degrees, the molecules become free and fly apart again. The reason they are not all plain six-sided plaques is because there are an infinite number of etheric forces in all parts of space, and it is the influence of the other etheric forces that causes the variations in the detail form of snowflakes…”
