GC: You will give the relations of this entity and the universe, and the universal forces; giving the conditions which are as personalities, latent and exhibited in the present life; also the former appearances in the earth plane, giving time, place and the name, and that in each life which built or retarded the development for the entity; giving the abilities of the present entity, that to which it may attain, and how:
-
EC: Yes, we have the entity here, called [3020].
-
In giving the interpretations of the records as we find them, these we choose from same with the desire and purpose that this may be a helpful influence in the experience of the entity; enabling the entity to better fulfil those purposes for which it entered this present sojourn.
-
These we choose from the records with the desire that the entity would magnify the virtues and minimize the faults; this in self as well as in its judgements of others.
-
For, remember the law, - it is with what measure ye mete that it is measured to thee again.
-
This we find as a composite of the astrological and material sojourns, but without respect to what the entity has done about same:
-
One that is very careful of its details; whether this is pertaining to that demanded of others or of self. This at times has been carried to extremes, in both directions; which has made for hardships where such should not necessarily have been the outcome.
-
One that is very fond of music, the harmonies of music, the ability of music to span time and space; the ability to soothe even that of loneliness, discouragement or the like. It is not necessary that the entity play himself to enjoy same, though the entity may make such an outlet for itself.
-
In its ability as a writer the entity has the ability to give description in an unusual way and manner.
-
One interested in the unusual, out of the ordinary; and these innately to the entity indicate some special gift to such individuals as may manifest or demonstrate such.
-
Astrologically we find Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus as the influences indicated in the manifested activities of the entity’s experience.
-
Thus one of a very high-minded individual entity.
-
One with the desire for information, or knowledge.
-
One that considers the mass as well as self; and this at times has been to the extremes.
-
The ability as the researcher into mysteries enables the entity to write, or the entity would be able to write, a good mystery play, or drama of that nature.
-
One also, as in Saturn, that finds many varied changes. These may have to do with material, mental, or even spiritual outlooks.
-
As to the activities in the earth, - these have been quite varied. While all may not be indicated here, these we choose because they indicate not only the periods where definite change was encountered as to the soul or purpose of the entity but the manner in which there was the choice of self as a vehicle for expression in many ways.
-
Before this the entity was in the land of the present nativity, when there was the recruiting of groups under that leader who aided so efficiently in the Revolution.
-
The entity was among those that in the present would be termed the intelligence officers, associated with LaFayette.
-
The entity then was active in the land of the present sojourn. Hence certain definite parts of the land should be of particular interest. And the entity should find in or near Williamsburg, Virginia, things and conditions that should prove of especial interest to the entity. For, there an “affair” changed the whole course of the entity’s activities through that experience, - in the name then Jean DeLarquen.
-
The entity gained, the entity retarded, the entity gained. For, as indicated from the beginning in this experience for this entity, to know to do and to do it not becomes sin. To have the universal consciousness of the righteous attitude of others as well as for self is most commendable in the entity, and this is one of those virtue of self that should ever be magnified.
-
And, as indicated as to the abilities of the mind in reasoning or analyzing individuals or groups, these should prove of a helpful influence in the experience and open a greater opportunity for the expression of self in this material plane.
-
Before that the entity was in the South African land. There the entity was among those who attempted the early settlings in that part of the land.
-
Hence as the groups, or as a member of a group that would be called the daring peoples of the East, the entity attained to great detail - both as to things and as to individuals, as well as to groups and masses, and that having to do with the phases of man’s experience and his relation and interrelation one with another in a whole land.
-
From those activities there we find the present abilities as a linguist, as a student of psychological subjects, as well as of the spiritual realm. The application of the entity to such may bring some question as to the relative relationships to morality, to the choosing to be of a help to others. And the entity may aid here in that direction.
-
Before that the entity was in the Egyptian land, when there were those activities under the new King, where the authority had been vested in the Priest.
-
The entity was among those who were a contributing force in the land to which the Priest was banished; enabling the pressures and the desires of others to make this an interesting and a helpful experience for this entity.
-
Thus we find the entity acted as an emissary to the emissaries of that particular land; that is: As there were progresses made in the various lands, the entity journeyed from one group to another, or from one organized state or nation to the other, to aid not only in keeping contact and contract with them but enabling them to prepare the greater activities for others in their individual service.
-
Thus we will find the entity a patient, long suffering individual. But when it gets mad, it gets mad all over! and has little or nothing to do with the sources of such a disturbance.
-
The name then was Istah-Muel.
-
Before that the entity was in the Atlantean land, when there were those activities in which there was the destruction of the isles.
-
The entity chose to remain, and was destroyed with those upheavals.
-
Fears of various natures arise in the experience of the entity when there is the apparent development in this or that phase of its relationships to others, to circumstances or conditions that arise; and the entity doubts self.
-
As to the abilities of the entity in the present, then, and that to which it may attain, and how:
-
DO write on those varied subjects pertaining to those in authority, whether by choice or by heritage, AND their relationships to the middle man.
-
Thus, as the entity may find in those modes of expression, whether in teaching or in ministering to others, there is the right ground upon which ye stand as to thy concept of the living force or God.
-
Ready for questions.
-
We are through for the present.

R1. 6/3/43 Dr. [3020]‘s ltr. to EC:
Dear Mr. Cayce:
I received the Life Reading a few days ago, and found it very interesting. A good deal of it is quite ambiguous and cryptic, so that I cannot make out too well what it refers to. Had it been possible for me to be present, some questions would have suggested themselves to me that might have clarified things. However, some portions of the reading contain valuable suggestions and food for reflection. Not the least profitable effect of it as a whole is that it strongly stimulates one to regard one’s present life and personality with the same detached curiosity, and objectivity of judgement, which is easy towards those earlier lives.
Hoping to have some time the pleasure of meeting you personally.
Sincerely yours, [3020]

Dear Mr. Cayce:
There is a bare possibility of my coming to New York for the afternoon on April 24, and if so I shall be happy to talk with you if, as you anticipate, you also are there at that time. As regards June 18-24, I am pretty sure I shall not be in New York.
You ask whether I would give a lecture some time in the Fall, on your Association’s program. I am inclined to think not, for I have not been lecturing on psychical research and do not at present contemplate beginning to do so. In any case, since I have no first-hand observations on this subject about which to talk, I could approach it if at all only from the standpoint of the highly technical philosophical questions that have bearing upon it; and these are unsuitable for presentation to a general audience. What I may or may not privately believe concerning the reported facts of psychical research is something which I cannot mix with such public utterances as I may make on the subject. These have to be such only as I feel prepared to defend on the basis of objectively established facts, or of rigorously critical philosophical interpretation; for otherwise, instead of perhaps accrediting the subject to some extent with scholars, what I would say would result only in my getting classified by them as a “nut” and in destroying such possible influence upon them as I might otherwise have. For addresses to general audiences, there are plenty of persons better situated than I am. I am sure you will see the validity of the point I am trying to state.
Sincerely yours, [3020]

Mr. Edgar Cayce Virginia Beach, Va.
Dear Mr. Cayce:
I have just read the history of your life and activities recently published by Mr. Sugrue. I found it very interesting for a number of reasons.
The Munsterberg anecdote, for example, because I knew Munsterberg somewhat, when, years ago, I was one of his assistants in the large psychology course he gave at Harvard. Also, because I remember that, when I was a boy, I was taken by my mother to a woman, who was reputed to have something of the same gift as yours, for advice as to treatment of deafness in my left ear. The treatment she suggested, how- ever, was too difficult to carry out, so no real test of its efficacy was obtained. Also, because some of the ideas that have come out of your readings as to the meaning of man’s life on earth have been familiar to me for forty years, and some of them coincide with what I myself believe of the subject.
I would be interested, if it should be possible, in having you give me a “Life Reading”; for it seems to me that, if successful, it would be a sort of thing that might help one a good deal to know and understand oneself and one’s tasks.
Won’t you please let me know whether you are willing to attempt it and could do so without my coming to see you, which would not be easy just now. Also, in such a case, what in particular I should do. I may say that it is much against my grain to get anything for nothing - indeed, I don’t believe it is really possible. This means that I would want to make in return some suitable contribution, and I should appreciate it if you would tell me what would be appropriate.
Sincerely yours, [3020]
B2. 4/4/43 HLC’s ltr. to Dr. [3020]:
Mr. [3020] …, R.I.
Dear Dr. [3020]
My father has turned over to me your letter of March 30. We are delighted that you have been interested by the book which Mr. Sugrue wrote on his life and work.
Under separate cover I am sending you some literature regarding the life readings and in the white booklet on my father’s work you will find membership applications.
May I briefly explain our Association policy regarding membership fee. My father never refuses to give any reading regardless of whether an individual is able to pay the membership fee or not. Our Association is a membership organization which is attempting not only to make possible an accurate recording of all the information given through my father but also to study the various phenomena and lines of thought which are presented. Each reading is recorded in duplicate and then cross indexed so that all the subject matter is available. You can understand the advantage of this when you consider the fact that over two thousand life readings have been given.
The best approach is to have an experience of your own. I hope this interests you enough so that you may wish to make a further study of the work. We are anxious to have the interest and cooperation of people whose background provides an ability for understanding the full implications of the information.
As is clearly outlined in the literature, this is not a cult or an ism, nor do we desire to build up anything around one man. It is a research organization and we are most delighted to have the help of real thinkers.
Cordially yours, Hugh Lynn Cayce [HLC/esw]
