This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 9th day of June, 1943, in accordance with request made by the self - Mrs. [3040], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research and Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by the book, THERE IS A RIVER.

1. GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them:

2. EC: Yes, we have the body here.

3. As we find, conditions are such that as to responses - which there may be from suggested applications - much will depend upon the attitude of mind of the body.

4. And, while there would soon be considerable response, unless that gained in the physical is also magnified and manifested in the mental and spiritual, there will be a reverting to old disturbances.

5. There has been such a number of operations that little may be said to be normal as to the relative relations of the functioning system.

6. Thus the abilities of the eliminating systems - both the alimentary canal and the disturbance with the kidneys tending towards lack of proper activity - tend to be to the detriment of the body becoming anywhere near to normal.

7. But as we find, if there is the use of these applications, the body may find response. Then it will depend upon the mental attitude as to whether the body will keep that response.

8. First, then:

9. As demonstrated first at Reilly’s, we would use the ultra-violet with the green light projected, - doing this about twice each week - for twenty minutes. This would necessitate that the light be at least several feet from the body, - eight to ten feet, but the green light only about eighteen or twenty inches from the body, and this moved to include the area from the throat and lungs to the end of the spine - that is, so as to cover the whole spinal area during the twenty minutes, see? For this particular body, do not use the ultra-violet WITHOUT the green glass between same and the body.

10. Once each week, immediately following such a light treatment, have a thorough rubdown with an equal combination of Peanut Oil and Witchhazel. It is best that these be mixed just as they are to be used on the body, or just before they are to be used, see? Massage this combination into the spine, all the body will absorb. And then, not too roughly, but gently, knead this into the activities of the alimentary canal, - that is, by the gentle kneading so that there will be an aid to the general peristaltic movement through the alimentary canal. Hence knead the abdomen, you see, which would include the stomach itself - gently.

11. Then, be careful as to diets. Do not mix too much starches, ever. There should be taken considerable of the fruit juices, vegetable juices, and do include in same a great deal of water cress and beets and beet tops.

12. These as we find, if they are followed, would be the better forces for this body.

13. For the general glandular system, - we would take internally one drop of Atomidine in half a glass of water each morning for five days - before the morning meal, you see. Then leave it off five days. Then take again. Keep repeating this procedure for at least several months.

14. Do that.

15. Ready for questions.

16. (Q) The intense pain and pressure over the eyes lasting for days at a time, due to an allergic condition after coming in contact with certain plants or smoke, dust and various foods? (A) This should be relieved by the gentle massage, especially after the third or fourth treatment.

Do as indicated and we should find quick response. BUT it is the mental attitude that is going to change. For we see the sources of this are the incoordination between the superficial - or the lymph - and the deeper circulation, tending to form lymph tumors through the body.

17. (Q) Loss of finger nails and swelling of fingers during winter months due to cold or slight pressure, accompanied by severe pain.

(A) This indicates the lack of the activity of the glandular forces of the thyroids. Thus the use of the oils indicated should particularly aid in these directions, also the taking internally of the Atomidine.

18. (Q) Attacks similar to gall bladder attacks. (A) These, as we find, are mostly from gas formations.

19. (Q) Reoccurring spastic colitis? (A) Lack of the proper activity, as indicated, through the peristaltic movement in the alimentary canal. Hence the needs not only of the lights but of the massages indicated.

20. (Q) Bad condition of gums? (A) These should be aided particularly with the use of the Atomidine.

21. (Q) Arthritic condition of joints? (A) This is more neuritic than arthritic, and is caused by pressure on nerve forces.

Do these things indicated for the better conditions.

And the results will depend much upon the consistency of the application and upon the mental attitudes.

Dear Mr. Cayce:-

Received the Reading and am very anxious to follow the suggestions contained in same.

We have tried to get the Atomidine but find The Atomidine Co. in Mt. Vernon has moved and left no new address.

I have been to Dr. H. J. Reilly for a massage with the peanut oil and Witch Hazel, but he says that it would be impossible to have the light 8 to 10 feet away from the body and the green glass close (18 to 20 inches) from the body. He put it about two feet away with the green glass directly in front of the ultra-violet light. What do you think - will this be just as beneficial. I am so anxious to follow your suggestions exactly, and feel somewhat upset about the lights.

Dr. Reilly mentioned that usually it is suggested how many times one should take these treatments. In your reading it is suggested that I have the light 20 minutes - but I received it only 3 minutes as he was afraid it might burn my skin.

Dear Mrs. [3040]

Have yours of 18th - do hope you will be able to obtain the Atomidine. As for the light treatments let Dr. Reilly direct that. If he is not able to have light far away he is correct in the short time, for a burn would be very bad and that long a period close would burn, am sure.

Feel sure you will get the benefit, but do keep trying to find the Atomidine.

Dear Mr. Cayce:- I have been wanting to write to you for some time. On June 9th, 1943 you gave me a reading and in it was suggested that I have ultra-violet with green light treatment twice a week, followed once a week by massage of peanut oil and witch hazel. Also to take Atomidine.

For six weeks I followed these directions as to going to Reilley’s for the ultra-violet and green light treatment and massage. Also taking the Atomidine, but found that I could not give up two days a week to go to New York and that the expense was too great (9.00 Reilley's and 3.00 R.R. fare) so have just continued taking the Atomidine ever since.

The Atomidine has helped my hands greatly, but the other conditions such as swelling and pain in joints and the severe headaches and burning and pressure over the eyes still persist with equal severity.

It occurred to me recently that perhaps you could suggest some ultra-violet light I could buy and how to attach green glass over same and use this at home and then have the peanut oil and witch hazel massage in my own town, which would not take so much of my time. Mr. Reilley thought I would need a great many of these light treatments and in that case, I would not mind paying for a good light to use at home.

I would also like to ask you if you could interpret just what is meant by “mental attitude” as in your reading it stated that much would depend on my mental attitude. I am naturally of an optimistic nature and have very little time to brood over my condition and so am somewhat puzzled by that statement.

In a recent letter from the Association I read on the membership card that one is entitled to a psychic reading. Is that correct? If so I would like to have one, as perhaps that would explain what is meant by changing my mental attitude.

I would greatly appreciate hearing from you as to what I could do about buying a light, also whether I understood correctly about the free psychic reading.

Dear Mrs. [3040]

In answer to your letter of March 28th, I would like to suggest that you might find in [it] more convenient to go to Dr. Wm. D. Taylor [N.D.], 29 So. Maple Terrace, East Orange, N.J. He has had experience with carrying out the readings, and he has the equipment necessary for your treatment. If you find that this is inconvenient, I suggest that you ask Doctor Taylor how you can get the equipment you need. I’m sure you will find that your condition will improve considerably with the use of the green light, etc.

You asked about getting a reading for your daughter. The price of all “Life Readings,” are 20.00. A first physical is 20.00 and check-physicals are $10.00 each. I suggest that your daughter (if she is old enough) request her own reading, as a result of her own interest. We have two booklets which were prepared for the very purpose of helping the individual to prepare for and use the reading they receive, with understanding. One is called “Life Readings” and the other “Physical Readings.” Do send for these and read them carefully. They sell for fifty cents each.

Mr. Edgar Cayce, Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Dear Mr. Cayce:-

I’ve tried getting along without troubling you for a check physical reading but in the last few weeks the pain in my left leg has become definitely worse and the left foot has become completely numb including two of the toes, but hurts terribly when I walk or upon moving the foot. The doctor claims it is phlebitis and says there must be a tonsil stump left and an infected tooth to be removed, although my dentist says this is not so. What can be done for this condition?

The Atomidine has been wonderful for my finger nails, as for the first time in probably 15 years I have not suffered from the intense pain and loss of finger nails during the cold weather last winter, and I have offered a silent prayer of thanks for you many, many times.

I would like to know if this Atomidine may be taken indefinitely without any harmful results, as I find the fingers swell again when I have stopped using it for a few weeks.

I still have the spastic constipation and wonder if anything could be suggested for same.

I understand my membership expires with the end of this month and am enclosing check for $10.00 for the check reading.

I believe I am at last beginning to understand what was meant by changing my mental attitude.

Dear Sirs:-

Many years ago I had a reading by Mr. Edgar Cayce in which I was advised to use the Sun lamp with green glass.

Some time ago the green glass was broken and I have been unable to procure another green glass similar to the one I had. Could you advise me where I might be able to procure another such green glass?

While writing this I thought I might ask you whether the continued use of the Atomidine (which was also advised to use) would be all right. I have used the Atomidine at intervals, but wondered whether continued use could be harmful. I would very much appreciate an answer to this question.

Dear Mrs. [3040]-

The date of the reading given for you by Edgar Cayce is June 9th 1943. Do you have a copy of this reading? If you are following the suggestions given from “memory” there is the possibility of not remembering the basic condition with which you are dealing.

First, in reply to your question about where you may get Green Glass. Try the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company. Or you might write to Dr. H. J. Reilly, RCA Bldg., 1250 6th Ave., N.Y.C., perhaps he could tell you where you may get Green Glass. Your letter of 2/23/44 states that you had some few treatments from Dr. Reilly (green glass-ultra-violet-massage treatment) and I am sure he will be glad to give you a lead on where you may get the Green Glass. Remember that the green must be in the glass, and not painted on the surface.

In your recent letter of May 20th you did not state how you have been taking the Atomidine, nor how often you had used the ultra-violet and green glass, nor whether you have followed this with the massage suggested, using the Peanut Oil and Witchhazel for the massage. Further you did not tell me what your present condition is, so you can see that I am at considerable disadvantage in making any specific suggestions.

Generally, however the following should apply: Follow the suggestions given in your reading just as they are outlined, and do this in a series - repeating the entire treatment two or three times; then have a rest period from the treatment two or three weeks - and then repeat the entire routine again. Bear in mind that it is extremely important that you keep your eliminations near normal. Diet, exercise - such as walking - and when necessary mild “vegetable compound” laxatives. Occasionally a professionally administered colonic should prove most helpful. NEVER take Atomidine when taking any other medicine or anything that has alcohol in it. Otherwise taking Atomidine from time to time should prove most helpful to you. It is the Atomidine which helps the glandular system of your body, particularly the thyroid gland which has to do with the health of your nails, hair, and to some extent your teeth and gums. This should also help relieve the condition of the joints in your hands. Do use the Peanut Oil and Witchhazel massage. This would not only help the eliminations but would to some extent act as a lubricant and food to the stomach and intestines. Undoubtedly you have had diet suggestions from your doctor and from this you know that your body is to a great extent dependent upon what you eat for rebuilding itself.

We would be most grateful for a report on your case. The following questions will give you an idea of the information we desire. How many treatments did you take from Dr. Reilly? Over what period of time? What response did you get from these treatments? What part of your reading have you been following, aside from taking the Atomidine? Have you taken Atomidine continuously since the time of your reading? If not, how have you taken it? Do you feel that your reading accurately described your physical condition? If not wherein do you feel that it was incorrect? Have you been under a doctor’s care since the date of your reading? What is his diagnosis? Your reading indicated the possibility that there might be “a reverting to old disturbances.” To what do you think this statement referred? Do you still have difficulty with your nails and swelling of fingers during the winter months? Do you still have what seems to be gall bladder attacks? Reoccurring spastic colitis? Did the condition of your gums improve? Is there still a tendency toward arthritic conditions in the joints? This information would be most helpful to those who are attempting to study and classify the readings of Edgar Cayce.

Please do let us hear from you very soon. I am hoping too that the suggestions I have given you in this letter may be extremely helpful to you at this time.

Dear Sirs:-

I am enclosing check for $2.00 for books checked and also would like to get some information if possible.

Many years ago I had a reading in which I had been advised to use 1 drop Atomidine for 5 days and then NOT take same for 5 days. It was marvelous the way it cleared up the bad condition of my fingers and finger nails. Have taken it periodically whenever I seemed to need it. However, a year or so ago I had a check-up, due to other conditions, and was then told I had been exposed to radiation. I have since wondered whether the Atomidine is radio-active, - as in that case I would cease using it.

Could you advise me about this?

SUBJECT: Atomidine radio-activity

Dear Mrs. [3040]

Many people, like yourself, reported good results from taking the Atomidine years ago as designated in Mr. Cayce’s readings. One case I remember [826], though, had bad results because he kept taking it after he had completed the course as outlined in his reading.

Since Mr. Cayce’s death Atomidine has been banned by the medical profession for internal use, except under the direction of a physician. It is a wonderful thing to have on hand for external use, as it usually heals without leaving a scar and is quite antiseptic. However, I would certainly not take it without a doctor’s advice. Mr. Cayce in his psychic diagnosis was able to tell whether or not a person needed it, and how much, but the layman is certainly not in a position to decide.

Hoping this answers your question, and that your exposure to radiation is not serious, I am

P.S. The exposure may not be from the Atomidine, but the risk is too great to take further chances. I’d certainly not take it except upon the advice of a physician.

R10. 4/9/68 “Many years ago I had a reading by Edgar Cayce in which Atomidine was recommended… This was most beneficial for my eyes and although I have written to the Atomidine Co. in Mt. Vernon, N.Y., have received no reply. Formerly on receipt of check they would send same. I need it badly at present and am hoping that you could give me information as to where I can procure same.”

R11. 4/12/68 GDT’s note: I had a bottle sent c.o.d. from Ingram Pharmacy, Va. Beach. I urged that she consult her physician before taking it internally, even though it had been recommended in her reading years ago for a glandular condition.

Dear Mr. Cayce:-

After reading a review of “There is a River” in the Herald Tribune a few Sundays ago I procured the book and feel after reading of your wonderful work as though it’s been an answer to my prayers, just at a time when I needed it most. So I am writing you to ask what I must do to secure a reading. The following is a brief summary of my case:-

All my life I’ve suffered with severe pains in the lower portion of my spine (even as a small child) frequent attacks of indigestion and severe headaches. Then in the course of my life the doctors advised various major surgical operations in the hope of relieving these conditions. Removal of appendix and right ovary, suspension of uterus, suspension of right kidney and 8 years ago removal of the gall bladder, and a year ago after having terrible hemorrhages removal of the fundus of the uterus due to two large tumors. Also tonsillectomy and septum operation. But all to no avail, in fact, the last few years I have gradually been getting weaker, and since the birth of my daughter 15 years ago have become allergic to all manner of foods, materials, smoke, dust, furs and even cold will bring on an attack.

This winter after an attack of a virus infection of the throat I have gradually been losing weight, have gone from 118 pounds to 104 pounds and seem to be more and more exhausted with ever increasing pains in my legs. I have been unable to do my work lately, and at the very times when I must go on.

I know the demand on your time must be great, but I would appreciate so much an answer as to just what to do to receive a reading so that I may once again be able to do things.

Dear Mr. Cayce:-

This is in reply to your letter of April 19th. I regret that my later letter and telegram asking for an earlier appointment could not be arranged.

As matters now stand I understand my appointment is definitely for the afternoon of June 9th between 3.30 and 4.30 P.M. E.W.T. During this period I will be at my home at the above address.

You suggest that I make a list of questions concerning my condition. As stated in my first letter to you I have had a number of operations including suspension of kidney, removal of gall bladder, removal of right ovary and appendix and a year ago removal of part of uterus due to two large tumors, and several small operations.

I would like to know what has been the cause of all this trouble and what can be done to alleviate these various present conditions:-

1: Intense pain and pressure over the eyes lasting for days at a time due to an allergic condition after coming in contact with certain plants or smoke, dust and various foods. 2: Loss of finger nails and swelling of fingers during winter months due to cold or slight pressure, accompanied by severe pain. 3: In spite of removal of gall bladder - still have attacks similar to gall bladder attacks - and reoccurring attacks of indigestion and distension. 4: Reoccurring spastic colitis. 5: Arthritic condition of joints (shoulders, hips, neck and CONSIDERABLE pain in lower spine). 6: Bad condition of gums. 7: Constipation since first operation removing ovary and appendix. 8: During last six months loss of 18 pounds - with sub normal temperature most of the time, and on slight over exertion or cold high temperature accompanied by pains in kidneys and gastro intestinal tract (physician claims is pyelitis and colitis).

In spite of all these troubles I am still up and doing much of my own work. My general health situation is very bad, but I am most hopeful that you will show me the way to improve it.

P.S. If chiropractic adjustments are recommended for the pain in the spine, perhaps some particular one might be suggested, as I have gone for a year at a time to various ones without any benefit.
