This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 24th day of June, 1943, in accordance with request made by the self - Dr. [3056], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research and Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by the book, THERE IS A RIVER.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. Dr. [3056] and S. David Kahn.]
Time of Reading 10:30 to 11:10 A. M. Eastern War Time. Virginia Beach, Va.
-
GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [3056], present in this room.
-
As we find, there are disturbances that prevent the body from its better physical functioning. These have to do primarily, we find, with that coordination between the sympathetic (or vegetative) nerve system and the cerebrospinal nerve system.
-
Thus the bursa are involved that are in those areas dealing with locomotion, or controlling of the locomotory centers, almost crosswise of the body.
-
While the effects produced are much like those from a leakage, hemorrhage, or the like, we find that these have NOT been caused by what is commonly called a stroke. While many of the organs are primarily involved, we find that the greater part of the distress arises from other sources than that ordinarily involved in such conditions.
-
These, then, are conditions as we find them with this body, [3056] we are speaking of, present in this room:
-
While the activities in the blood supply, the elements as related to the hormones of the blood force itself, indicate disturbances in activity, and the slowing of circulation through portions of the extremities of the body, these are NOT the effects as of the body of the circulation itself being involved.
-
As we find, then, more of the involvement is in the nervous systems, the energies of the body, the activities of the body having been such as to break down that proper coordination between the nervous systems; that is, the cerebrospinal AND the sympathetic (or vegetative) systems, as indicated.
-
Because there have been those disturbances that weakened the centers or ganglia along spinal areas, where the activities between the superficial and deeper circulation were involved, the effects produced are in the locomotories that were and are controlled by the energies that are controlling from the central nervous system, the central blood supply, and the superficial blood supply.
-
Thus we find these conditions existing through this body:
-
The brain forces and their reflexes are active. These are near normal, save as they are disturbed by pressures that exist in the areas of the 5th and 6th dorsal, as through the sympathetic control, the activities in the locomotion to the left upper portion of the body. And there we have an inflammatory condition that causes pressures which prevent nerve impulse that flows with the blood supply through that portion of the arm, as to cause the lack of the ability of coordinating usage of same.
-
We have in the 2nd lumbar that which prevents coordination of that flow to the right side in the lower extremities. These are not so inflamed, but are of the nature that causes the lack of the reflexes in the use of the nerve and muscular forces of this limb.
-
By the activities of the body that brought about these conditions, there has been the lack of that assimilated from that digested, through the activity of glands, to supply sufficient of the elements for producing the stamina - or the impulse in the nerve body itself, the impulse for the retraction, or reaction, or reflex from the brain; the gray and the white matter in nerve itself.
-
As indicated, these do not extend to the spinal cord nor into those areas that would direct the impulses to activity of the organs, - either the kidneys or the liver. While both come into reflex reaction, and at times become involved, these are not cut off. Neither is there caused that which would bring about atrophy; indicating then that this involvement is more to the sympathetic connections with the cerebrospinal system, at centers or ganglia indicated in the body.
-
The lack of this element, with the overuse of the energies of the body, both as to locomotion in the lower and upper portion, causes these areas to suffer under this stress and strain.
-
To be sure, there are involvements - from the long period of inactivity - to the heart, the lungs, the liver and the kidneys. But these as yet are secondary to the disturbance in the superficial, the lymph and the emunctory circulation, that is involved through the activity of the sympathetic nerve reflexes; which control not only secondarily the organic activity but that as related to the imagination, the sensory reaction, and the impressions that go to make up those reflexes in the responses to impulses from activity of the sensory centers.
-
These, as we find, may be materially aided - if those elements are added to the system that are the basic effect of activity of nerve, muscle AND impulses that go to supply sufficient activity in the vibrations of the body force itself.
-
For, all activity is of an electrical nature.
-
Thus we would supply to the body in such a manner as to carry into the body, vibratorially, those elements that are both healing and supplying of that to bring the coordinating activity between the nerve systems of this body.
-
We would, then, use the very low form of electricity that is of a static nature, or that would be made by the combinations of elements that produce same.
-
For this body, the proportions of the ingredients for the charging solution would be as follows:
-
In at least 2 gallons of Distilled or Rain Water, add - in the order named; putting into a crock container, to be sure:
Copper Sulfate…2 pounds, Willow Charcoal…1/2 pound, Sulfuric Acid C.P…1 1/4 ounces, Zinc, to cause the reaction, or the decomposition that causes the current…at least 30 grains.
-
As the composition takes place, gradually add - in at least 3 1/2 to 5 days - later, you see - 3 drams more of the Zinc, or 3 1/2 drams.
-
The poles of the Appliance should be one of copper, the other of nickel; so that the anodes or plates may be attached to the body. On the nickel plate and pole, have a connection with the solution of Gold (the proportions being one grain Chloride of Gold to each ounce of Distilled Water, and use at least six ounces in the container to be used with the Appliance). The connection should be of hollow lead through the solution itself, so that there is built up - by the charge through the body - that which causes a discharge into the body itself.
-
The larger nickel plate, about two inches in diameter, would be attached to the body at the umbilical and lacteal duct plexus - or, on this body, four fingers from the naval center toward the right, and one finger up from that point. That would be the center on this particular body.
-
The small copper plate would be attached at the upper part of the 9th dorsal center, so that the vibration passes directly - as it were - through the body.
-
These attachments, using the Gold, would be made every other day - for one hour.
-
Keep the plates very clean, or well polished before and after using. Keep the solution clean; disconnecting and taking the connection out of solution when not in use. And let it be connected to the Appliance about twenty minutes before it is attached to the body.
-
Have a second solution - Spirits of Camphor, commercial strength. This would be connected to the body in the same way and manner, but the copper plate as used here should be attached at the 4th dorsal center, or that that will aid or control and carry to this portion of the body the healing forces for the area disturbed that causes this break between the nerve systems. It would be attached one day at the 4th dorsal center, and the next time it is used - which would be every other day, you see - attach to the 4th LUMBAR center.
-
After the use of these for fifteen days - that is, after each solution has been used for fifteen treatments or attachments - change the solution. Also at the end of that period - which would be thirty days in all, you see - renew the charging solution for the Appliance itself.
-
When the Appliance is begun, begin also - each day following same - with a gentle massage along the spine, from the base of the brain downward to the 9th dorsal; and from the feet and heels upward to the 9th dorsal - this along the sciatic nerves and along the lower portion of the lumbar and sacral area.
-
As these take effect upon the body, we find that there will be less need for the stimulating of heart impulse, - produced by the pressures from bursa in ankle, in wrist and arm, - and these properties for the heart may be gradually diminished. In the present they are necessary, to keep the flow through the affected areas.
-
In the matter of the diet, - do have oft for the body those properties that carry a great deal of iodine and calcium; or sea foods often. Those that carry the elements indicated especially in beets and beet tops. These are healing in their activity upon the lymph circulation. They are even capable of destroying certain characters of bacilli in the system.
-
Carrots, both cooked and raw, should be a part of the diet.
-
These, of course, are not all that should be taken, but these should be a part of the diet from day to day; not every day, but sufficient that these carry their influences in the body.
-
Occasionally, the Jerusalem artichoke, cooked only in its OWN juices, or in Patapar Paper, should be eaten. The effect of the insulin in this is needed in the system, in the activity created in the pancreas and its effect upon the liver and the kidneys as the poisons are eliminated by the activity of the glandular forces producing those influences to be eliminated.
-
Keep the alimentary canal rather active. Vary as to an aid, from the vegetable to the mineral eliminant, that there be not those drosses left in the alimentary canal itself.
-
Do that - be persistent, be consistent - we will find help.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) What initiated this condition? (A) Overactivity or tiring the body to such extents, as indicated, to break down the connections without there being sufficient elements of gold to supply in the system nerve energies.
Hence this should be taken vibratorially, not by mouth.
-
(Q) Is the lesion that causes the paralysis located within or outside of the confines of the nervous system? (A) Outside, and in those areas indicated. It is NOT a brain lesion.
-
(Q) Are any of the tracts of the brain or the spinal cord involved? (A) As indicated, naturally from long standing there are tendencies. But it is at those ganglia, those centers indicated, where there is the greater involvement - and only traces, and not lesions formed, either in the spinal cord or in brain itself.
-
(Q) What causes my chronic constipation? (A) Lack of general activity of the body. So, as most of the activities of that assimilated go to produce general energies, peristaltic movement becomes lessened.
As indicated, necessarily, any form that stimulates circulation slows some portions of eliminations.
- (Q) Why is it that I have faced eminent death from 9 to 14 times? (A) This might be answered in many different ways. We find it would be given like this: God hath need of thee among those that seek to aid their fellow man.
Do not overtax thine own energies, but rather let His purposes be COMPLETE in thee, as to that service ye may render others who sincerely seek to contribute to the better welfare of their fellow man.
In other words, God hath need of thee - in the EARTH plane - as yet.
-
(Q) I live an isolated existence in which I have no congenial or sympathetic companionship. How can I remedy this condition? (A) So give out of self to ATTRACT to thee those who need what thou hast to give. And well would you choose someone - as thine own young companion in the present! Keep him with you! [S. David Kahn]
-
(Q) Is there a person I should select as a companion, and how will I known when such person is found? (A) Just as indicated, you have him with you at the present - Keep him!
-
(Q) How is Summerville or Charleston, S.C., for my future residence? (A) Any of these - for, of course, close to the coast, as indicated by the elements that are necessary - these would be well.
-
(Q) How will it be possible for me to augment the income that I now have which is not sufficient for my needs? (A) CLASSES! As ye give to others, ye gain for thyself; PROVIDED you do not overdo it.
For, ye are still in a material world - that breaks down oft too easily.
Do give those opportunities for that indicated to react upon thee, finding in same that which will help and strengthen thee.
To be sure, keep the advice or counsel with those close to thee in thine own chosen field of activity, wherever ye may be - but DO keep this body close to thee. He can do much for thee, as ye can for him!
- We are through for the present.

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 6/27/43 EC’s letter to HLC [in Europe]: “Dr. [3056] had his reading Thursday - said last night in talking about it that the readings knew more anatomy than nine-tenths of the doctors that were practising every day, and that the description of the sympathetic system and the blood and lymph system was perfect…believe that he will go to Reilly
- possibly Reilly’s farm if it is open. If so I feel sure he will get relief, and Appliance and massage - hope it works out fine.”
R2. 7/13/43 David E. Kahn’s letter: “We have Dr. [3056] set in a nice place. Dr. Daisy Fletcher [D.O., friend of Miss [3582]] may also help him.”
R3. 7/16/43 DEK’s letter:
DAVID E. KAHN 244 Madison Avenue NEW YORK LExington 2-7680
Mr. A. M. Godfrey 2709 Lafayette Blvd. Norfolk, Va.
Dear Mr. Godfrey:
Mr. Kahn is sending you parcel post special delivery the poles and appliances for the battery for Dr. [3056]. Will you please go over them and see if these are the correct combinations which we are to use in the battery box and jug which we have here.
Be sure and mark with red and white cord the positive and negative poles using red for the positive and white for the negative showing us which is to be nickle and which is to be copper so that all we will have to do is connect them up. I wish you would send us the zinc if you have it. It requires 30 grains and then we are to add another 3-1/2 grams five days later.
Will you be good enough to send us at least 6 oz. of the solution of gold which is 1 grain of chloride of gold for distilled water so we will have the gold here. According to the Reading we are to use two gallons of distilled water.
I suppose we can get the sulfuric acid here and also the copper sulfate.
Kindly send this as quickly as possible and let us know how this is so we can send you a check for it.
With kind personal regards, Sincerely, Elizabeth Brown Secretary to D. E. Kahn [EOBrown]
P.S. Please check the attached memorandum and send all the necessary materials required for the solutions and the battery as Dr. [3056] is not in position to get out much and it would be helpful to have everything together.
R4. 7/28/43 Mrs. Brown’s letter to EC: “Dr. [3056] has not started his treatments as yet because he cannot seem to find the proper place to live. He did not like it at Reilly’s and came back. However, as soon as he can make up his mind where he wants to live he expects to follow the reading exactly.”
R5. 7/29/43 [3056]‘s letter:
Dear Mr. and Mrs. Cayce and Miss Davis too!
First I want to congratulate you on the arrival of your new grandson. I hope it will be gifted like its grandparents. You two have come a long way since that night of your courtship at the gate of Mrs. Cayce’s home. It is the finest piece of writing in Mr. Sugrue’s “There is a River.”
I have been delayed by one thing or another in getting into the routine of treatment the reading prescribed for me, but I am hopeful of getting started soon.
The battery in Mr. Kahn’s possession had to be sent to Norfolk to be put into condition. Mrs. Brown of Mr. Kahn’s office informed me today the battery had been returned and the necessary working solutions, too. I have the greatest faith in the efficacy of the treatments and I am grateful to you for your efforts in my behalf.
The Kahns have been perturbed over young Davids illness. He is doing nicely and will be about in a few days. I have procured for him a disarticulated skeleton and the latest edition of Morrises Text Book of Anatomy. I am looking forward with genuine pleasure to being of aid to such a gifted boy.
My very best to all of you in Virginia Beach. Thank you again for your kind hospitality. God bless you all!
Sincerely, [3056]
R6. 8/1/43 EC’s letter:
Dr. [3056] …, N.Y.
Dear Dr. [3056]
I am very glad to have yours of the twenty-ninth. We have thought of and spoken of you quite a number of times. I do wish it had been possible for us to arrange where you could have been here but may be it is best as it is - you or I don’t know. We are continuing to be deluged with requests from those who have read “There Is A River” and every now and then, we get a letter from someone who was impressed very much of the happenings at Mrs. Cayce’s home on a day in August many years ago. I am sorry you have been delayed in getting straightened on your treatments, but these are the things one must come up against in a thing of this kind that hasn’t been organized to take care of things immediately, but I do hope that it will all be set just as is suggested in the information and that you will have the advantage of whatever good may come from the use of the appliance as suggested. We have, through the years, had a number of cases where seemingly impossible things have been done with the use of this appliance. Of course, I know some of these might have happened anyway, but most of them say they can tell the difference when this appliance is used though they cannot feel anything when it is being taken.
I have been very anxious about the young David Kahn, and one thing, because we have not been able to try to be of a service owing to the appointments already made. I understand though that he is better. I certainly appreciate your interest in the young man, not merely because the information has suggested that he would do well in this line, but because I feel a great interest in Dave’s boy.
Do let us hear from you from time to time and know we are anxious to be of a service if it is possible. Do not hesitate to call on us for anything you would like to know about the information that isn’t to you quite clear. Thank you and very personal regards from all.
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce
R7. 7/44 GD’s note: Routine mailing was returned marked with change of address in care of a hospital in New York State.

Background
B1. 5/1/43 [3056]‘s letter:
Dear Cayce,
I am taking this way of [to?] bring myself to your attention with the hope you will help me.
I have read with admiration and amazement your biography by your friend, Thomas Sugrue. It is a most interesting and convincing account of enduring courage and unselfishness.
The pictures accompanying this letter are of dissections I made, photographed and colored by hand in the latter part of my incumbency of the chair of anatomy in The College of Medicine of …
The photography and coloring are not what I should have like to have achieved but I am sure you will recognize technical excellence in the execution of the dissections. My sole purpose was to do an exceptional piece of work that would be helpful and an aid to any one interested in human anatomy - the surgeon, medical men, students of medicine, nurses and of the arts - sculpture, drawing, etc.
But, alas, my activities came to an end five years ago, I am now practically a “shut in” and my left arm and hand hang helplessly at my side. I am able to walk, haltingly with the use of a cane. Strange to say, I have considerable endurance.
I taught anatomy at the Univ. of …, 1906 - 1909, at … Univ, 1909 - 1910 when I was called to the professorship at … where I remained until I was stricken and I was retired as a prof. Emeritus by the University.
I have had the good fortune of the best medical attention and advice. Many of my former students are leaders in medicine, surgery and the specialties in the large centers of population in the U.S. and of course are interested in me and my progress. Through some of them in N.Y. City, leaders there have been enlisted, too, and consulted about my particular affliction - Spastic Paralysis, involving more particularly the flexors of my left arm and hand. My hand shows the least degree toward recovery. I have progressed slowly from a state of complete immobility up to the place in which I find myself today.
I have had plenty of time to reflect on my condition. I attribute my progress and improvement more to the slow healing positive processes of nature which manifest themselves more effectively when not interfered with rather than to unintelligent and frequently faulty curative measures no matter how lovingly and solicitously administered.
I do not mean to disparage nor low cast aspersions on the medical profession. I have the deepest respect and regard for it and have been a contributor to it in an educational way.
However, in my own case I have come to an impasse as far as the recognized treatment is concerned. Fortunately I read a review of Mr. Sugrue’s biography of you which inspires this letter asking for your help.
Never have I permitted myself to be resentful and to become embittered. It has really been the means of awakening in me a deeper appreciation of the finer things of life and brought some spiritual light. I am more tolerant and considerate and sympathetic - wiser and I hope a better man.
As you can imagine from my associations I came in contact with the attitude of the points of view which in many instances is a negative one. You have had it to contend with in your work. However through all my varied contacts and experiences my faith in the Fatherhood of God and in the efficacy of prayer has never wavered. I have never been active in religious work and have sinned grievously but never, as I have remarked, doubted God’s goodness as revealed in the life and teachings of Jesus Christ.
My mother was a Kentucky woman. Her maiden name was Susan Ford. She literally had a closet in [which] she retired to pray.
I shall encounter, no doubt, difficulty in applying therapeutically any physical treatments you suggest in my case. In my endeavor to think things through, I have been wondering if it would be possible for me to come to Virginia Beach or one of its environs so as to come in immediate contact with you and to know you personally.
I was retired by the university on a modest pension which is sufficient for my needs.
I am anxious to make available to others the fund of practical anatomical knowledge in my possession. I would do this with out any idea of compensation for my services.
Then, too, I am equipped with a variety of photographic paraphernalia ready for use if I could regain the dexterity of my left hand.
I am 68 years old and still well preserved and my mind is active.
I realize the many demands made up on your time. However, I am facing the responsibility of making a decision in the near future to go to a Reconstruction Home in Central N.Y. State to undergo treatments similar to ones I have had before without any appreciable improvement in so far as I can see, in my condition.
I have faith Mr. Cayce that you are endowed with powers Mr. Sugrue claims for them in the biography.
I am forwarding the photographs in separate containers by first class mail. There are 7 separate envelopes. I have numbered each envelope and hope every one reaches you safely.
God bless you Mr. Cayce! Please pardon the length of this letter.
Sincerely, [3056]
B2. 5/20/43 John Cannon’s (M.D.) letter:
John Cannon, M.D. Thornycroft Apartments Scarsdale, N.Y.
To whom it may concern-
This is to state that I have attended Dr. [3056] for the past year.
He has had mitral insufficiency on a rheumatic basis since youth. For the past 10 years or so he has had auricular fibrillation for which he has taken digitalis with good results. Occasionally a mild degree of anasarca sets in easily controllable with increased digitalis and salyrgan.
Four years ago he suffered a sudden left hemiplegia, probably on an embolic basis, which has persisted.
Recently he has had neuralgia involving the right shoulder and arm.
Blood pressure 130/80, pulse around 80, totally irregular. Loud systolic murmur over apex, lungs clear, no edema at present.
Sincerely, [signed] John Cannon, M.D. JC/ew
