GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them.
-
EC: Yes.
-
As we find, there is a complication of disturbances. These have to do with the activity of the liver, as well as the lack of proper supply through structural portions of the body to supply sufficient of the red blood cells.
-
These complications arose, we find, first from a chemical unbalance in the system, or - first - a lack of the supply of the gastric juices, or of the acids in the digestive system.
-
This tends to make for such a drain on the blood supply as to cause a form of anemia. This anemia, becoming of an acute state, and with the unbalanced condition in digestion, affected the liver.
-
Hence we have rather a serious disturbance that may be a combination of multiple sclerosis and anemia, which makes the inability for activity or for the use of the lower limbs, as well as an affectation to all the locomotory centers, as well as the inability of supplying energies to the digestive fluids in the body.
-
While these are rather serious, there are some complications in administering for the better conditions of this body.
-
We find that the liver extract, as well as the Beef Juice, should be given as medicinal properties. The liver extract should carry a very small quantity of iron, - or such as may be found in Wyeth’s Beef, Iron and Wine. This may be taken in small doses, with the Pure Beef Juice, - these not together, but about every two hours apart; though, to be sure, do not awaken the body when it sleeps to give same. Alter these properties, one time giving a teaspoonful of the Pure Beef Juice, and the next time about half a teaspoonful of the Wyeth’s Beef, Iron and Wine, and so on.
-
Begin also with a daily massage of especially the sacral and lumbar areas with Peanut Oil. Massage this thoroughly into the sacral area and the abdomen, and especially across the liver and diaphragm area.
-
The low electrical forces that will make for a heating of the body, as in a very low form of Diathermy, will aid in the circulation of heart, lungs, liver, kidneys. These would be altered from the secondary cardiac plexus to the 9th dorsal plexus at various times, giving these about twice or three times each week - while the massage should be done daily.
-
In the diet, - not too much of solid foods, but that as may be easily assimilated.
-
Do take ACIGEST as a part of the stimuli for the better digestion. This we would take every other day, a teaspoonful in a glass of raw milk - preferably of evening.
-
These, as we find, offer the better opportunity for improvement of this body, [3080].
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) When beginning this treatment, should I discontinue the two shots of liver extract and Vitamin B-1 a week? (A) Not necessarily, but we will find that after these treatments here outlined have been taken for a week, these may be discontinued.
-
(Q) Why do I not walk? (A) The inability of the nerve and muscular forces to control the locomotories. Hence the needs for this stimulation and building up of the body, especially the massages of the limbs and the lower sacral and lumbar area, and abdomen, with the oils. These will supply much of food value to the lymph and emunctory circulation through same.
-
(Q) Is this the cause of my hands and back being so numb and stiff? (A) All of these, as indicated, are the complication. Do these things, as we find, and we may obtain the better results. But be consistent with these applications, each one in its regular place and manner.

We are through with this reading.

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 9/6/43 Letter from [3080] to EC:
“I received the treatments you suggested for the condition of my body. I thank you kindly… We have followed them exactly as you said and I know you would like to know how I am getting along.
“I am some stronger than I was when I started your treatments. My hands are still very numb. It is hard for me to write or use them in any way. It is hard for me to pick up a pin unless I pull it to the edge of the table. I do make them do a good deal for me. My legs are still very stiff at the knees and very hard to bend after I straighten them out. I do have more feeling between the knees and the ankles. I am sorry to tell you that I am not walking yet, not even standing. My back is so weak and numb that it doesn’t seem to hold me up. I have had a blood count last week, and it was 4,320,000 and about three months ago it was 4,290,000. The doctor seemed disappointed that it wasn’t much higher. He said it should be 5,000,000. I am still taking liver shots twice a week with Vitamin B-1. The doctor says, with all I am getting, that it should be higher. Can you please tell me why it doesn’t get higher as he expected. He said when my blood was up, my limbs would get well. I cannot see any change in legs, hands, or back yet. I do not sleep as well as I should. I have no pain or ache, just a pulling and a stiffness.
“Please, is there anything I can do for all of this? My doctor tells me to take two teaspoons of Castor Oil every morning before breakfast. Do you think that is the thing to do? That is, for constipation. Mr. Cayce, is it time for a check reading, or have I not taken your treatment long enough yet? Please excuse me for asking so many questions. I have so much faith in you that I feel I can ask you anything about my case. The doctor was here Sunday and we talked with him about it all, and he said it will take a long time for me to get well; and he said I would have to walk with crutches. What do you think of all this? Please do all you can to help me - if I can walk to the bathroom and wait on myself. Please tell me, should I keep taking the liver shots while taking your treatments? I don’t know what to do and I wouldn’t want to do anything to spoil what you are doing for me.
“I forgot to tell you that I am taking iron pills, too. Mr. Cayce, the doctor says that the reason I am not able to walk is because there has been some damage done to the nerves. Do you think this is so? Can they be made well?
“Thank you, Mr. Cayce, with all my heart…”
R2. 9/16/43 EC’s letter to [3080]:
“Thank you for yours of the sixth. I do hope you continue with the suggestions that have been made. I believe you will continue to see that they are most helpful. Of course, we are told by doctors that it is difficult to replace damaged nerves. However, our experiences have proven a little different and I hope it will be so in your case.
“Let us hear from you from time to time and do follow the suggestions and keep them up for some time.
“Thanking you…”
R3. 5/10/48 Extra copy of her reading was sent to [3080], through request of her cousin, [1770], who had found a doctor who could follow the reading.
R4. 11/27/51 Report by Sister-in-law [1816] in reply to questionnaire:
Note: Please give name and address of any physicians who helped you carry out your reading. “Dr. Mary A. Miller, …, Los Angeles, California.”
Please give technical name of ailment. (This is needed for indexing and compilation of similar cases.) “Paralysis and anemia. The reading was followed to the letter, for all of seven months. However, the shots of liver and Vitamin B-1 were continued throughout the seven month’s period. (Recommended by another physician.) No physical help was received while following the reading, but faith was increased and encouragement was apparent.
“After nine years of experimenting with dozens of doctors, the body has been built up and strengthened; digestive function has been restored and there is more life and feeling in the lower limbs. With great effort the patient can stand for a few minutes. She is assisted to her feet with someone supporting her on either side. Needless to say, we are hopeful.”
R5. 5/20/57 Report by medical student, Malcolm R. Ing on [3080]:
“The information concerning physical causes given in Case 3080-1 was extremely accurate as judged by orthodox medical science, but the nervous system lesions that are common with pernicious anemia are called ‘subacute combined degeneration’ (in the posterior columns, crossed and direct pyramidal tracts of the spinal cord especially in the mid-dorsal region).
“Did EC call the nervous system disease in Case 3080-1 ‘multiple sclerosis’ or was this what the attending physician called the disease? It would be of interest to clear up this matter because subacute combined degeneration does not always FOLLOW the development of a pernicious anemia blood picture. Most of the time the nervous system lesions PRECEDE the diagnosis of pernicious anemia and the discovery of atrophy of the fundus part of the stomach. It could be that multiple sclerosis (M.S.) and subacute combined degeneration are one and the same disease for they are anatomically similar (i.e., they both involve demyelinization followed by the disappearance of the axis cylinders of nerves and replacement by scar tissue?). However, the lesions in M.S. are found scattered throughout the nervous system, while those of subacute combined degeneration tend to be located only in the posterior columns, cerebellar and crossed and direct pyramidal tracts of the spinal cord. Still, I am beginning to suspect a common physical cause for these diseases - atrophy of the stomach, failure to absorb certain nutrients (Vitamin B-12, etc.) and disturbance in the liver. The information in case 3080-1 is very provocative.”
R6. 7/60 Dr. W. N. Pahnke’s breakdown of 69 cases of multiple sclerosis from the Edgar Cayce records listed Case [3080] in Group II.
R7. 12/20/62 Report to GD by Mrs. [3080]‘s cousin, Mrs. [1770]:
“She died, I think, in 1958. She was always able to sit up and do handwork but her legs were not able to walk: Numbness in her hands, but it got better. Her husband was older and inclined toward Christian Science - didn’t pay any attention to the reading.”
Background
Background
B1. 5/19/43 Dr. Mary Miller’s (D.C.) letter to EC:
“Under separate cover you will receive from Mrs. [3080], …, California, her application for membership in the Association. She was born July 20th, 1885.
“The regular diagnosis of her case would be multiple neuritis, which has affected both arms and legs. The arms have improved under treatment but the legs are no better. In fact, I might say they have gradually gotten worse. Her general health has improved and she looks well, but we have not made any real headway with the legs. She would be interested to know the cause and any suggestions you may bring through that would speed the recovery.
“The enclosed check for twenty dollars ($20.00) is to cover membership. They gave me the cash some time ago; hence my personal check.
“It was nice to get a note from you. Sorry to hear H. L. had to leave you for other duties. I know it will make a lot of difference to you since he did relieve you of so much of the detail.
“We have enjoyed your book, There Is A River.
“You may soon get a request for a life reading from a dentist friend. Thanks for the extra blanks.
“My best to yourself and family…”
B2. 6/2/43 Letter from [3080] to EC:
“I have not walked for nearly a year. I have a very good doctor. He diagnosed my trouble as pernicious anemia, which caused the damage to the nerves in my back which controlled the legs. I asked him if I would get over this condition and walk. He said I would walk but couldn’t tell how well. It was according to the amount of damage that was done to the nerves of the spine. He said if there was any damaged nerves in the spine that they would not come back; but all the other nerves in the body would come back. I have been doing exercises with my legs as much as I am able without hurting, but they seem to stay in that stiff condition. I never had any trouble with my back until this happened. I am having two shots of liver extract and vitamin B-1 a week to build up the blood. I am feeling stronger but do not seem to be able to walk as yet.”
Questions submitted for reading:
- Why are my knees so very stiff?
- What makes my legs heavy?
- Why is my back so numb and stiff?
- What makes my hands so numb?
- Why do I not walk? What caused this condition and what can I do to get over it, and prevent recurrence of same?
