This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 4th day of January, 1944, in accordance with request made by the self - Mr. [3085], Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. Harmon Bro.]
Time of Reading 11:15 to 11:20 A. M. Eastern War Time. …, Penna.
-
GC: You will give the physical condition of this body at the present time, with further suggestions for corrective measures; answering the questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [3085]; this we have had before.
-
Many changes have come about with this body. The body is much improved. There is no active bacilli in the lung at present. To be sure, this is as yet latent and will require that the body take precautions as to keeping a well balanced diet, so that there are not again the effects of the digestion becoming upset, or the liver and the kidneys.
-
Then, keep up the Acigest and the Calcios.
-
Do keep inhaling the Brandy. Gradually increase these activities.
-
Do not work under conditions where the feet get cold or damp, or where there is not proper ventilation in the working surroundings. But the body can begin with its activities.
-
Keep continually the constructive thinking within itself and within that which it would do for others. For in the manner ye treat thy fellow man ye treat thy Maker.
-
Take time to be holy. Ye have made promises to self, to thy Maker, to thy friends. Remember - what thou hast vowed, keep. For the Lord hath need of those who are honest with themselves.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) How much exercise will my body be able to stand from now on? (A) The body can take six hours of exercise daily in the proper set-up, or in the environs such as indicated.
-
We are through with this Reading.

R1. 1/5/44 EC’s letter:
Mr. [3085] …, Penna.
Dear Mr. [3085]
Thank you for yours of the 28th. I appreciate more than I can tell you your wish to contribute to the work of the Assn. Am in hopes that you have the information that was undertaken for you a few days ago before this, and I trust that you are pleased with the improvements that you have made according to the information and will follow through on the continued suggestions indicated. I believe from the experience that we have had with such cases, that you will get real results.
Am looking forward to sometime in the not too distant future of your being able to make a visit to the beach and to become personally acquainted with you.
Yes, the spiritual values are worth more than all the physical. In fact, it is not much good to merely be a good physical being without some spirituality combined with it, and I trust you have gotten some in the information that has responded to that real spiritual friend that is within yourself.
Thanking you, and hoping we may indeed be the means of a real service, I am
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce [EC/vw]
R2. 1/10/43 [3085]‘s letter:
Dear Mr. Cayce:
Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I cannot - nor can words - express my joy, the joy that fills my entire being every minute of every day. My gratitude to you is likewise inexpressible but believe that completely my heart thanks you always.
I shall continue treatments as my check-reading suggested. If you would I’d like to have some points clarified so that I will continue getting the great results I’ve already obtained.
As I am to increase my taking of Acigest and Calcios and my inhalations of the brandy, perhaps you could tell me about how much time should elapse between these increasings. For example, up until I received my reading I was taking Acigest every other day. Now I am taking it every day. Now approximately how much time should elapse before I again increase my taking of it.
As I increase my inhalings of the brandy, what should be the peak at which I should stop increasing my inhalations.
Since your appointments for readings extend so far into the future, do you think it best that I keep track, of whatever improvements I may make in the days ahead, through the medium of the x-ray?
There’s one more question you may or may not answer as you see fit. (A) If I continue improving as I have in the past, approximately how much time must elapse until I’m completely cured?
As soon as I can make financial arrangements for a trip to Virginia Beach, I am going to visit you so that I can thank you personally for your great kindnesses to me.
I close with the sincere hope that God may shower blessings on you always. Thank you again.
Gratefully yours, [3085]
…, Penna.
R3. 1/15/44 EC’s letter:
Mr. [3085] …, Penna.
Dear Mr. [3085]
Thank you very, very much for yours of the 10th. I am looking forward with a great deal of pleasure and interest to the day when I may meet you in person.
I believe you are going to be entirely well of this trouble. I know my own wife, whom I hope you will meet when you are here, in 1910 was in a much worse condition than yourself, and is entirely well and has little or no recurrence.
Now about your questions. After you have increased the Acigest to taking it once each day, don’t increase it more, but take it for about a week and then leave off three days. Take it for another week. Leave off three days more. You do the same thing with the Calcios. As to the inhaling I would get to where you would inhale this once or twice each day. Just keep this up. As you know, you will have to discard that that has been in the keg until you have been using it for nearly twelve months. Then it will be very well to rinse the keg out, but only after you have used what is in the keg at the time to almost no fumes arising from same. The inhalations three or four times a day is sufficient at any time unless you have a cold or something of that kind. Then you would increase about the same ration as I have told you. Of course after a year or by that time we need to make a check reading. You won’t have to worry about it. We will get it in whenever you want it. Yes, it will be very well for you to check on your condition with an X Ray and I hope that you will get just as wonderful results as many others have. You ought to be entirely well, [3085], in possibly less than a year.
Thanking you though and looking forward to seeing you, I am
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce [EC/mpw]
R4. 2/14/44 [3085]‘s letter:
Dear Mr. Cayce:
Just a few lines to let you know I am still getting along fine. I haven’t found a job as yet, but I’m doing odd things about the house, running errands, et cetera.
I don’t know when I’ll be able to visit Virginia Beach. I have had a great amount of pressing debts lately, but will see my way clear shortly. This circumstance has also affected my contributions for the Living Sponsorship, but I will be able to square everything in the months to come.
I hope you continue to remain in excellent health and also, your family. God bless you.
I am,
Sincerely Yours, [3085]
R5. 5/6/57 GD’s note: Routine mailing from A.R.E. brought a change of address for Mr. [3085] - to another street in the same town.
R6. 1/26/1998 JT’s letter:
Dear Mr. [3085]
It is so nice to have a new report to add to your vault file after all these years. I am enclosing copies of your readings from Mr. Cayce and you will see that our last contact with you from our vault records was in 1957.
We would like very much to have you give us a report on your health and tell us about your life in general. I am enclosing a copy of our Acquisitions Program and hope that you will be interested in helping us. Gladys was the lady who took down your readings. We are trying very hard to carry on her record keeping responsibilities. It would be very interesting if you would describe how you learned of your illness, what the Sanatorium was like, what sort of treatment routine they practiced, and how you came to the decision to leave the Sanatorium, as you said, on the day the reading arrived…
2/2/1998 Mr. [3085]‘s letter:
Dear Jeanette M. Thomas:
I am extremely grateful to you for finding my file and forwarding it to me. As I read this episode of my life 50 years ago, I wept; recalling the kindness of Edgar Cayce and the debt I owe him.
In order to respond to those details that you think might interest you, I will recount what I remember of that time to the best of my ability. But let me state that I never met Edgar Cayce and never spoke to him via telephone. All my communication with him was through the letters I wrote and those he wrote to me. In that respect your file is complete.
I was fifteen years old, president of my junior class at Harrisonburg Catholic High School, and a football player. After a particularly grueling game played on a rainy day in late October of 1939, I developed pneumonia. Drugs were not available for this condition and I was bedridden for the balance of that year. I returned to school in January of 1940. A tuberculin test taken at that time turned out positive and a follow-up x-ray indicated the presence of tuberculosis. The state of Pennsylvania then stepped into the picture and decided that I should be treated. My file read: “Incipient stage of tuberculosis. Recommend three months treatment at the State Preventorium in Mont Alto, Pennsylvania.
A Preventorium was essentially an institution devoted to appropriate nutrition, moderate exercise, a healthful environment and the creation of habits that would lead to strong, healthy bodies and minds. When I was x-rayed some months later to determine if I had convalesced sufficiently to be discharged, it was revealed that the disease had spread The doctors in charge of my medical welfare then decided to admit me to the State Sanitarium, also in Mont Alto, Pennsylvania. Actually it was just across the road.
Drugs were not available for the treatment of tuberculosis in 1940. The only treatment was to rest the lung(s) through bed rest and other means. My treatment first involved crushing of the phrenic nerve. This permitted some resting of the lung until the nerve rehealed itself; a period of approximately six months as I remember. The progression of the disease continued and treatment was advanced to include pneumothorax; the insertion of air between the chest wall and lung. The intent was to collapse the lung, permitting it to rest. The disease by now was considered moderately advanced.
Time went by. Months, then years. My condition worsened. The disease spread to my right lung and pneumothorax was initiated there. Both lungs were now involved; air was being pumped into both sides of my chest; I was losing a lot of weight; I became anorexic and I couldn’t keep any food in my stomach. I survived by keeping bread in the drawer of my bedside stand and continuously putting tiny pieces on my tongue until it dissolved so that I wouldn’t regurgitate it. The disease appeared relentless and my case was considered far advanced. The doctors decided to consider thorocoplasty. This was an operation in which ribs were removed from the chest and the entire chest wall allowed to collapse into the lung to arrest its movement. Totally depressed at this news I walked away from the sanitarium and hitchhiked home.
Here I continued pneumothorax at Harrisburg Hospital and tried to bedrest at home. The commotion I created indicated that this was not the place for me and after a few months I asked the sanitarium staff to readmit me. They agreed to do so.
Here the story can be picked up and concluded through the correspondence between Edgar Cayce and myself, and through the readings, except for this ending. I was x-rayed after the second reading and the physician could find no evidence of disease in my right lung and the lesions in my left lung were calcified and hardened and considered healed. I went on to Business College under a rehabilitation grant from the State of Pennsylvania. I eventually went to work for a company where it seemed I belonged and I stayed there forty-one years until I retired in 1989.
I am currently ready to turn 74 years of age. I have never been in a hospital since I left the sanitarium. I take no medication and I have never had treatment for tuberculosis, even though antibiotic drugs were discovered that could cure it. I married a girl I met on the job forty-eight years ago. I have five children and seven grandchildren, and at last reports all were apparently healthy and happy.
The day I received the first reading I believe I knew that the treatment Edgar Cayce prescribed through this means would heal me. I discontinued all conventional treatment went home, followed his instructions and became well.
I would be happy to stay in touch with you and provide you with any further information you may desire. All my materials associated with Edgar Cayce have been lost or appropriated by others. I would consider a visit to Virginia Beach when winter ends and it becomes less treacherous to travel. I could then answer any additional questions you may have.
Thank you very much for your kindness.
Very truly yours,
Mr. [3085]
R7. 2/12/1998 JT’s letter:
Dear Mr. [3085]
Thank you for your February 2nd letter…
I have shared your information (anonymously of course) with a medical doctor in Florida. He has asked me if we can obtain copies of your medical records, especially any diagnostic records. With a bona fide diagnosis, plus any “official” records whereby the lesions in the left lung were calcified, hardened and considered healed would put him in a position to treat tuberculosis patients on a trial basis… With even a small clinical study based on the Cayce information it would increase the level of acceptance within the medical community both here and abroad. He told me if he could publish his findings other doctors would then at least have the opportunity to use the treatments…
I would like to take an oral history and would be willing to travel to Pennsylvania to do this…
We would also like to borrow photographs for duplication for the vault records… Having photographs of the people who had readings is another level of documentation against anyone ever saying that Mr. Cayce was a fraud…
Sincerely yours,
Jeanette M. Thomas Administrator of Records
2/25/1998 Mr. [3085]‘s letter:
Dear Jeanette Thomas:
I contacted the Pennsylvania State Department of Health to determine if my medical records might be available from those days in the early 1940’s when I spent time as a State Preventorium and Sanitarium. They put me in touch with the people in charge of the Archives but they were unable to unearth any information from their files relative to the existence or disposition of these records. Archives turned me over to a person in the Department of Welfare who they thought might be of help, but it proved otherwise. It appears they do not know if the records exist; they believed, based on current practices, that they were probably destroyed but none of the people I talked to knew for sure.
I am willing to be of service to you if you wish to take an oral history and I am willing to supply you with photographs if I have anything you believe you might want to duplicate…
You only need to inform me of your schedule so that I am certain to be available.
I thank you for your kindness.
Sincerely,
Mr. [3085]
R8. 4/13/1998 JT’s letter:
Dear Mr. [3085]
I am writing to tell you that we will be coming to visit you for an interview the last week-end in May. We plan to meet with you on Saturday the 30th …hoping to arrive about 1:00 PM…
R9. 11/20/1999 JT’s letter:
Dear Mr. [3085]
…It has taken nearly two years to complete the enclosed study on tuberculosis in the Cayce readings…If you would still like to write a letter of testimony to be included in this study I would welcome it. This would be signed “Mr. 3085” in order to preserve your identity…
12/3/1999 Mr. [3085]‘s letter:
Dear Jeanette:
The study on tuberculosis was received and is quite a read. The effort put into it is quite obvious. I will be happy to supply you with a testimonial…
It was wonderful hearing from you. It is a joy having this association with my past. I almost feel as if a linkage still exists between Edgar Cayce and I, funneled through Gladys Davis and now, you…
Mrs. [3085] and I celebrated our fiftieth wedding anniversary on October 29. We were feted by our family and friends and just had a wonderful time. Do you think you can feel the gratitude I have for Edgar Cayce? I’m certain some of it seeps through the few sentences of this letter.
Your friend,
Mr. [3085]
