This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 21st day of July, 1943, in accordance with request made by the self - Mr. [3100], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research and Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by Mr. Wilfred Sechrist.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno.]
Time of Reading 11:00 to 11:25 A. M. Eastern War Time. New York City.
-
GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes - we have the body here, [3100].
-
In considering that as may prove helpful for this body, it will be well to consider the ENTITY as a unit, if there would be real help.
-
For, while we find there are pathological disturbances, these in their very nature indicate a prenatal disposition. Thus, if there would be physical or material help, the body’s first approach will necessarily be the study of self.
-
Not in that attitude, “I didn’t cause it,” and “I wasn’t the effect of being brought into the earth,” neither in the condemning of someone else for those attitudes or the lack of consideration before the birth.
-
But rather consider that the self is being given an opportunity, here and now, - if it will accept same, - to interpret, to understand, and to be of help not only to self but in contributing something to the welfare of others in all their stages of development or seeking for physical, mental and spiritual help.
-
That the prenatal condition existed is evidenced by the cycle or period when these disturbances first appeared with the body, in the lack of those elements or abilities within the body-forces to reproduce the stamina necessary - in the nerves and muscles of the locomotory centers - for the use of same in a physically constructive, creative way or manner.
-
That there was the so-called MERITING of this interpretation, this understanding for this soul-entity, is indicated by the soul’s choice and use of this opportunity for entrance into material manifestation.
-
Then, as you chose it, as you needed it, DO interpret it properly.
-
Do not become one that finds fault with others, condemns others. For, know - as given of old - “Though He were the Son, yet even He learned obedience through the things which He suffered.”
-
Would you be greater than the Son, who is the way, the truth and the light? and through Whom you may have that promise fulfilled, that where two agree concerning anything and ASK, they shall receive it - provided they LIVE and BE that which they ask?
-
Learn those lessons, then, knowing that as there were those elements lacking, there is the need for the proper interpretation in self along these lines!
-
Use those abilities of the mind in such measures and manners as to be ever a contributing influence for the creating of peace, harmony, love, kindness, gentleness, hope, in the minds and in the hearts of all with whom you come in contact day by day.
-
These are the first prerequisites if you would find help.
-
If you cannot accept this, forget it all. Do not even begin.
-
But DO accept; that you may know the truth, that may indeed set you free - in body, in mind, in spirit; that you may indeed be one with Him.
-
Those elements of gold and silver were lacking in those periods of gestation, which produced in the first cycle of activity the inability of the glands to create.
-
At the present time these may be so administered to the body as to become a part of the building structural forces, being assimilated in such a manner as to contribute to the physical well-being of the body; though such - in many quarters - becomes questionable.
-
For this particular body we find that this may be accomplished through the B Battery, prepared in such a manner that the charge from the positive pole of the B Appliance or B Battery will discharge, or pass through, the Chloride of Gold Solution and, alternately, the Nitrate of Silver Solution, in such a manner as to discharge the vibrations from same into the body.
-
Use the B Battery, then, prepared with a nickel or German silver plate to be attached to the body. This particular plate, attached to the positive pole of the Battery, would pass through the Chloride of Gold Solution one day and the Nitrate of Silver the next day, or the vibration of these properties would pass through the hollow lead tube to which the plate is attached, see? The charge would be built through this and discharged into the body-forces. On the negative pole would be used a copper plate which also would be attached to the body. Both of these plates should be small, and should be kept thoroughly polished before and after using. For the first two or three applications a gauze should be placed between the body and the positive plate.
-
These are not brain lesions. Thus the attachments to the body will be of a different nature.
-
Take the connections from the bottles when not in use. Connect to the Appliance about three to five minutes before being attached to the body.
-
The Gold Solution would be used one day (in the proportions of one grain Chloride of Gold to each ounce of Distilled Water, and use at least three ounces), the Nitrate of Silver Solution the next day (in the proportions of an ounce and a half of a two percent solution of Silver Nitrate in the alcohol, you see - to one and a half ounces of Distilled Water).
-
Make the attachments for twenty minutes; the positive first attached to the right wrist, the negative to the left ankle; next day the positive to the left wrist, negative to right ankle - and so on, circulating the attachments about the body; that is, the next day the positive would be attached to the left ankle, the negative to the right wrist; the next day the positive to the right ankle, the negative to the left wrist. Thus a circuit will have been made. Then commence all over again. One day the Gold, the next day the Silver - for twenty minutes.
-
After fifteen applications with each Solution, renew the Solution.
-
Each day following the use of the Appliance, massage gently the ganglia and centers along the spine; the locomotory centers especially in the lumbar and sacral, the 9th dorsal, and the brachial plexus, also the cervical; that those elements supplied vibratorially through the Appliance may be distributed through the body in such manners as to enable the body cellular force to recuperate, in the nerve energies, in the tendons and muscular forces. Thus there may be the building of sufficient energies to bring back to physical usefulness those parts of the body that at the present time have become nil in their activity. Massage the whole length of the cerebrospinal system, including the limbs, the feet and the arms; the 3rd cervical, brachial center - or 2nd, 3rd and 4th dorsal, 9th dorsal, and throughout the lumbar area.
-
After these treatments are begun, keep to a diet of very plain but stable foods; that is:
-
At least once each day have some raw, fresh vegetables.
-
Little of meat, but this should include ONLY fish, fowl or lamb - properly prepared; not fried; neither are they to be prepared with other foods - that is, other seasonings except butter or margarine - and save the juices from the foods themselves.
-
The vegetables for this body should all be prepared in their own juices, as in Patapar Paper, and seasoned with butter or margarine that is reinforced.
-
No foods should be fried in fats.
-
Do these, and we offer the greater opportunity for helpfulness for this body of [3100].
-
And remember, the first consideration is to be the mental attitude.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) What causes the right side of my jaw to slip out of place? (A) Talking too much, and then this is a part of the advancement of this condition - when nothing has been done much about it!
-
(Q) Prescribe treatment for my bronchial and sinus condition. (A) All of these are of the same natures. If you will follow these applications suggested, there will be offered the better opportunity. BUT - unless the spiritual attitudes are changed and the usefulness directed, the material applications had better not be undertaken!
-
(Q) Are the use of tobacco and alcohol harmful to my physical condition? (A) What is your ideal? Would you prepare these for that you would worship as your Maker? If you would, use them. If you wouldn’t, they are harmful.
-
(Q) How can I prevent my hands and feet from perspiring excessively? (A) By doing the things we have suggested.
Do these things - and we are through with this reading.

Reports
Reports & Follow-up
R1. 8/31/43 [3100]‘s letter to EC:
”…As per instructions in your reading for me of July 21st, I have obtained from A. M. Godfrey of Norfolk, Va., a B Battery Appliance which I have used with the following results:
“The first time I used it I received a very deep burn on my left ankle from the silver plate, and a burn embedded with copper on my right wrist. As it was apparent to me that something was wrong, I took the battery to a radio shop which tested it with a DC Volt Meter and found that the pole marked positive was actually the negative one and vice versa.
“After that, I hooked it up with the poles reversed in the correct order, but I still got burned. This time, blisters on my right ankle from the copper plate, and a burn embedded with silver on my left wrist. This was all done with a piece of gauze between the plates and my body.
“I don’t mind the shock, in fact I sort of like it, but the burning is what annoys me, and if I keep it up, I will be all covered with scars. It even burns through the gauze while not giving me the shock. The only solution that I can think of is that there is a short in the Appliance, but I don’t know how to find it.
“If you can give me the names of any people who are using this Appliance in New York I would like to talk with them about it. If there is any other information you would like, please don’t hesitate to call me collect any evening…”
R2. 9/14/43 [3100]‘s letter to EC:
”…Bill Sechrist came to my house with a meter and tested the Appliance I have. He is of the opinion that there is an error in the construction of the jars, and drew the enclosed diagram to show what he meant.
“I know that you are terribly busy, but this means so much to me that I surely would appreciate your looking up the readings and determining which one of these diagrams is right. Perhaps if you have the instructions for building this whole Appliance, Bill could rebuild the one I have if such is necessary.
“Mr. Godfrey wrote me to send the Appliance back and he would refund my money, but it’s not the money that I want…”
R3. 9/22/43 EC’s letter to [3100]:
”…Replying to yours of the 14th, I’m sorry there has been a mix-up with the Appliance. I had to look up quite a lot of data on this from old readings and the construction of the various Appliances. I think Mr. Sechrist has gotten the idea as is presented. I talked with Mr. Godfrey last night also. I think if you will just cut the loop out of the connection, it will work all right; it will be like the lower diagram that I have marked. This, the charge, will be highest then in the solution and will require that you refill this possibly every few days.
“Do hope all is well and that you will soon see real results from the use of the suggestions made…”
R4. 10/13/43 [3100]‘s letter to EC:
”…In answer to yours of September 22nd, this is to advise you that we cut the electrodes in the bottles holding the solutions, but the Appliance still burns me. I have tried to use it for the past three weeks hoping that I would become accustomed to it, but my arms and legs are so covered with burns, sores, scabs and scars that I had to give it up. As I said in my last letter, Mr. Godfrey offered to refund my money if I sent the Appliance back to him, but that wouldn’t help me. I am certain that I could gain assistance if the Appliance was right, and you told Mrs. Sechrist that it would positively help me. The question is, how to find out what is the matter with it. Do you think that a Check reading would show up the faults in the Appliance or the way that I am using it? I am willing to do anything that you can suggest in order to get it working right…”
R5. 10/18/43 EC’s letter to [3100]:
”…I have yours of the 13th, and notice what you have to say about the Appliances. Send it on back to Mr. Godfrey and we will make a check-up on this at the first possible moment. We will see just what is the trouble. I know you don’t want to do without it. Possibly we may be able to find just what is wrong, and to suggest how this may be remedied.
“Thanking you, and hoping that I will see you when I am in New York in November, and trusting that you are going to find some help in the suggestions that may be made…”
R6. 12/9/43 Mr. [3100]‘s girl friend, [3390], obtained a Physical reading via his recommendation.
R7. 1/12/44 His friend, [3390]‘s mother, [3552], obtained a Physical reading.
R8. 4/12/44 [3100]‘s letter to Mr. A. M. Godfrey:
”…This is in reply to yours of April 11th asking me to do you a favor, which I have done gladly.
“You will receive the specified articles C.O.D. from the Radio Wire Television Company of 1100 Sixth Ave., New York City. The price is
9.00 a hundred for both, making a total of27.00 for the 200 plugs and 100 jacks. Enclosed you will find a note giving you the lot numbers.“I had to give them a five dollar deposit before they would send the things, so you will have to pay the expressman
22.00 and send me a check for5.00.“If you have any fault to find with them, contact Mr. Davis at Radio Wire Television, Inc. Should you want some more zinc or chemicals, I would suggest you write to Mr. Parker of Eimer & Amend, 633 Greenwich St., New York City…”
R9. 7/52 Elsie Sechrist’s reply to questionnaire, transcribed from tape:
“As I recall, I met him [3100] in about 1932, just after I was married, and at that time, his condition was just beginning to show. As time went on, he got worse and worse. I was with Bellevue [Hospital] at that time, and through some of the doctors there, we had him made a patient. They went through all the treatments, etc., and then they declared him to have this [tape inaudible]. Then as years went on, in 1943 when I contacted Edgar Cayce, we were still friends and I was so thrilled with my own results from the readings and my husband’s, that I talked to him about it and told him that I thought that this was a terrific opportunity for him; to get a reading and find out if there was an opportunity for him to be helped. Whether it was a karmic situation or not, I didn’t know. So through my discussions with him - ”
Question: Well, what actually was his physical condition? Describe his physical condition when you first knew him. Answer: “1931? Well, even that and 1943. In 1943 it was quite advanced then. He had that shuffling gait and there seemed to be a tremor and inability to control the nerves on one side of his body. I don’t recall whether it was his right or left side. There was a shuffling, a dragging of the leg and a rotating treatment of the arm, and his head had begun to shake just a little bit.”
Question: He wasn’t that bad off when you first met him? Answer: “Oh, no, but there was a stoniness that had begun to appear already in the face and the eyes, which is so important a part of this illness.”
Question: What treatments had the doctors given him? Answer: “Well, merely a treatment of checking because there’s really no treatment. He was at Bellevue Hospital for a couple of months. I was head nurse in the TB ward there, and I used to go downstairs twice a day and when they really
- I don’t know if they told him definitely there was no hope, but in the mind of medical science: there was nothing that could be done for him apart from [tape inaudible].”
Question: Generally, what was his attitude towards life and painfulness? Would you consider him a spiritual man? Answer: “No. He was so much of an introvert that there was very little discussion. But I knew from his attitude toward women that he was very sexually inclined, oversexed, as a matter of fact, and didn’t seem to care too much about what he left in his wake.”
Question: Did he express any particular attitude with regard to his mother? Answer: “All we knew is that he worshipped his mother. His mother and father had separated early because he and his mother lived together and there was great consideration for his mother. Everything seemed to revolve more or less around his mother. Not that he was what we would call hanging on to his mother’s apron strings, because he was a positive person, but after I got to know him, I knew that he was also a very selfish person.”
Question: After he got the reading, did you go over it with him? Answer: “We went over it together.”
Question: What was his reaction to it? Answer: “He was very hopeful. He thought that maybe something could be done for him. I went into, especially, that passage there about having to change and I tried to analyze with him: What is your attitude toward this, what is your attitude toward that, toward women, etc. But he seemed to be so reticent in exposing himself that I was sort of frustrated. I didn’t feel like I could get to help him really in that particular angle. I know I told him over and over again, I said, ‘Now, [3100], judge yourself, analyze yourself, pray and meditate and see what, it is that you are doing, or not doing, that you should do.”
Question: What was his attitude regarding the comments on the prenatal condition? Answer: “At that time, nothing. But since then, he spoke to my husband. He’s very bitter that the Edgar Cayce records blamed his mother for such a thing, because he can’t believe that his mother was anything but an angel. She was a fine person.”
Question: Can you tell me what period of time he followed through with the physical suggestions; the use of the B Battery, for example? Answer: “He ordered it almost immediately and he was diligently trying to use it, but he kept being burned. I saw those burns and my husband saw those burns. They were black burns. They weren’t just red areas or blistered areas. I think I told you yesterday that he called me and told me about the burns and I told him to write the Association and send the machine back, and tell them that they must have made an error in making it up. So it was sent back and then sent back to him in New York, and again it did the same thing; these violent burns, deep-seated burns. But my husband took the amp meter, I think it was called, and tested it and the voltage was so low that after my husband tested it, I took it and even put in on my mouth and my tongue, and left it on a long time, and didn’t even feel the vibration. When I put it on him it began to burn immediately and he followed implicitly the instructions. We were there. We tried to help him on it, and always he was burned badly.”
Question: Did he attempt to use this for, say, a couple of months? Or just a half of dozen times? Answer: “No, I don’t think I’m capable of judging how long a period he tried to use it, but I know he had dozens of burns on both his legs and arms.”
Question: What about the massage? He was also told to be massaged after the use of this battery. Answer: “They gave him those massages diligently.”
Question: And then there were certain suggestions regarding diet. Did he take those seriously? Answer: “Yes, he did. He followed all those physical measures accurately. The only place where he fell down, whether through inability to find that which was wrong or lack of desire to even examine himself, because he felt so superior, I don’t know. But the physical thing he did follow.”
Question: The last time you saw him was when? Answer: “I saw him in New York in January, 1952, and my husband had seen him just before I did. He was in a pitiful state. I saw him at the lecture at the Psychology Forum in New York. He was in a most pitiful state.”
Question: Able to get around on his own? Answer: “Yes, he was able to get along on his own, but he was hunched way over and he was dragging both feet. The tremors in his whole body were terrific and that stoniness of his face, and the eyes; he was scarcely able to emote at all. And then the last report that I had was through my husband. I wrote to him, I had a date with him on Saturday, as a matter of fact. We wanted to talk together and he didn’t appear. Later on, we found that he had fallen in the street and was picked up by an ambulance and was rushed to a hospital where they said he had had a heart collapse. I’ve had a letter from him since, saying that he was feeling pretty good, but was never going to a hospital again, and after that - very bitter. I think this may show something regarding this mental condition - suggestion that he change. He walks the streets, as he told my husband, and sends out thoughts of hate towards these other older people because he can’t understand why they should be walking the streets, why they should be living, when his own mother was taken, a good and beautiful and pure woman. So with this bitterness in his heart, I feel that his [tape inaudible] on this earth plane are very [tape inaudible].”
R10. 3/30/53 Elsie Sechrist’s letter:
”…My friend, [3100] who had a Physical reading in ‘43 or ‘44 and was burned so badly with that machine EC prescribed, died a week from last Saturday, March 21, 1953, of coronary thrombosis. I told you about his case last summer, how the reading warned him not to use the Wet Cell Appliance [B Battery] unless he changed first, lest he be worse off than before. He did, and he was. His mother passed on 8 months before he did. They were inseparable. He never married and she separated from her husband when he, [3100], was a child. Now they are together again…”
R11. 10/6/55 Elsie Sechrist’s letter:
”…Bill and I were shocked at how desperately he [3100] reacted after his mother’s illness. He was so very bitter, wondering why other old people were left walking around and his sweet mother taken. She was about 86 when she died…”
R12. 7/10/67 Mrs. Sechrist in studying some readings ran across Case [606] which said “Alcohol won’t work with Gold”. She told GD she felt this might be the reason why the Appliance carrying the Gold continually burned [3100], because he did not give up his alcohol.
