This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 27th day of July, 1943, in accordance with request made by the mother, […], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research and Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by Dr. W. Fleck, on staff of Bridgeport Hospital.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno.]
Time of Reading 4:05 to 4:20 P. M. Eastern War Time. …, Conn.
-
GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them.
-
EC: Yes - we have the body here, [3114].
-
As we find, these - for this experience of the body - are rather serious. If it will be accepted, this IS a purging of the body; thus a prenatal condition, or a choice by the entity to enter this particular environ.
-
Yet those making administrations for helpfulness for this body may change the whole course of this entity’s unfoldment.
-
First, there is the necessity - we find - of getting the cooperation of the body itself, so that there may be those impressions made upon creative influences in the body. This will require spiritual awakening, mental alertness. And the body has grown so “don’t care” in some respects that this will require some effort on the part of those responsible for the body.
-
But the long period of suffering, the inability to be like others, the general disturbances which have existed tend to make even much stronger determinations to weaken.
-
We find this is represented in such manifestations that have caused the glandular forces within the activity of the assimilating forces to be involved in the general disturbance. Thus there is included the liver, spleen, pancreas, and the activity of the kidneys. Or, as termed by some, there is inflammation or dis-ease in the right lobe of the liver.
-
These activities as we find, of the multiple sclerosis nature, are taking out of the system such coordinations in the lumbar, sacral, and the coccyx end of the spine, and affecting these areas to such an extent as to take away the stamina - or the gray matter.
-
This as we find is NOT a brain lesion, but rather a FEARFULNESS in the soul of the entity.
-
Thus the making of administrations must first begin with the arousing of the body to make use of the opportunities that may be offered here, in such a way as to measure up to better conditions - for what the body would attain in this material plane.
-
First we would begin, then, even through the remainder of the summer, with the Hot Castor Oil Packs over the liver area for one hour each day. Use three thicknesses of flannel well saturated in the warm Castor Oil, and then apply heat, over the liver and gall duct and caecum area. Do this an hour each day for three days in succession.
-
On the evening of the third day, take internally half a teacup of Olive Oil.
-
Then leave off these.
-
After resting two days from such applications, begin taking internally three drops of ATOMIDINE in half a glass of water each morning before breakfast, for at least two months.
-
Then (after the two months of taking the Atomidine) we would change to the use of the Wet Cell Appliance that would carry certain forms and measures of elements from minerals to the body.
-
Make the Wet Cell Appliance three-quarter strength; that is:
Copper Sulphate…2 3/4 pounds, Sulfuric Acid C.P…1 3/4 ounces, Zinc…7 drams.
(No willow charcoal in this strength here - this would only float.)
-
Attach the Appliance for thirty minutes each day (when the body is cleansed and ready to use the Appliance), and let there be carried in the Appliance to the body the vibrations from Chloride of Gold - in the proportions of one grain to each ounce of Distilled Water, and use at least three ounces.
-
The large attachment plate, through which the Gold Solution passes vibratorially, would be placed at the umbilical or lacteal duct plexus; that is, on this body, three fingers from the navel center toward the right, and one finger up from that point. The small copper plate would be attached at the lower portion of the 9th dorsal, or between the 9th and 10th dorsal.
-
These are attached so as to discharge the Gold through the lacteal duct area, you see.
-
Change the Gold Solution after fifteen treatments. Renew the charging solution for the Appliance every thirty days.
-
Keep the attachment plates very clean, or polish them thoroughly each time before and after using.
-
Take the connections out of the solution when not in use and wipe dry. Put them back into the solution, or connect to the Appliance, about twenty minutes before the attachments are made to the body, see?
-
Each day following the use of the Appliance, massage the body with this combination of oils; adding them IN THE ORDER NAMED:
Usoline or Nujol, as the base…4 ounces, Oil of Pine Needles…1 ounce, Oil of Sassafras Root…1/2 ounce, Oil of Peanuts…2 ounces, Cedar Wood Oil…1 ounce.
Shake these thoroughly, pour a small quantity in an open saucer, and massage especially along the limbs, the right and left side of the cerebrospinal system; massaging all the body will absorb of these oils, in a circular motion - on each side of the spine rather than on the spine itself so much. Particularly this should be massaged into the sacral and lumbar area, across the hips. And THEN, gently, commence from the toes and move towards the body, in massaging this into the limbs.
-
In the diet we would keep the strengthening foods, as in Beef Juice, sea foods often, and the bony pieces of chicken thoroughly cooked and well masticated by the body.
-
Do these, if we would make the better conditions for this body.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Why is her condition a little better after her periods? (A) The setting up of the activity of the glands as related to the organs of the pelvis. Hence the instructions to massage the oils thoroughly into the sacral and lumbar areas of the body.
-
(Q) What causes her to have the constant tremors or the convulsive movements? (A) The inability of coordination between the impulses of the sympathetic system and the activities of the cerebrospinal system. This is to be helped with this renewing of the stamina that is lacking in the ability of the nerve impulse to be controlled by the sympathetic system.
Do these things given, and we will make better conditions for this body.
- (Q) What keeps her from walking without help? (A) The lack of strength in the muscular ends of the nerves and tendons.
Do as given, for better conditions.
- We are through for the present.

Reports
Reports & Follow-up
R1. 8/1/43 [3114]‘s mother’s letter to EC:
“We have received the report of reading for [3114] which took place July 27th. We have read it with a great deal of interest and will immediately start with treatments as directed.
“Would like very much, however, to have you explain about the length of time I should use the Castor Oil Pack you mention on page 2 [3114-1, Par. 11].
“Does this mean that we should apply the Hot Castor Oil Packs for three days only or should we continue them after resting the two days as mentioned in the paragraph just below [Par. 14] the above quoted instructions?”
“I gave the extra copy of the report to Dr. Fleck and he is very much interested…”
R2. 10/2/43 [3114]‘s mother’s letter to EC:
“I have today sent to Mr. Godfrey, the directions for making up the Wet Cell Appliance. We should begin using it about October 7th, as at that time she will have had the Atomidine for two months.
“In one of the papers you sent me you mentioned that you could supply the materials to be used in connection with the Appliance and if that is so, I would appreciate it very much if you would send what is necessary. If you desire the money for this material before you send it out, please let me know the amount and I will mail it to you.
“About [3114] - we have noticed a change for the better in her. While I was giving her the oil packs we noticed she was very jumpy and convulsive as though they disturbed her, so after the five weeks were up, I discontinued them as you suggested. She has walked alone several times and seems much brighter. This week she isn’t very good as she is menstruating. The functioning of the female organs seem to have a strong bearing on her condition. The drops of Atomidine have evidently made quite a difference to her - was this medicine for the glands? We are anxious to get started on the Appliance to see if that will help her still further.
“After I get started with the Appliance, how long will I keep that up?
“About the Oil Packs - it seems to me that in one of your papers you advised me to apply them for three days for several weeks and then after resting a month, start again with them. Should I give her the Oil Packs while she is using the Appliance? She should start with the Appliance around October 7th and the month of rest for the Oil Pack is up around October 15th. I would appreciate it if you would let me know about this…”
R3. 10/16/43 EC’s letter to [3114]‘s mother:
“Replying to yours of the second. We are sending you, under separate cover, data pertaining to the appliances. Of course there is no charge for these. I believe you will see a real change when you begin to use the appliances and massage that follows. Keep up the oil packs carefully, as has been indicated in the reading. Keep them up for a few days, or for the whole period, as given, and then the rest period, but after correction [commencing?] with the appliance, keep up the oil packs. But break up by the massage, the lesion that is in the right side. I do hope you will find real results. Let us hear from you from time to time…”
R4. 8/13/47 [3114]‘s mother’s letter:
“Enclosed please find twenty-five cents for which send me one of the case histories for Epilepsy…”
R5. 8/18/47 HLC’s letter to [3114]‘s mother:
“We have your order for our pamphlet on epilepsy which is dated August 13th.
“We will be very interested to learn of any use you are able to make of this data. We have an abstract on this subject which we would like for you to have if it would be of interest and help to you. A number of physicians cooperating with us have gotten remarkable results with epilepsy cases…”
R6. 7/60 In Dr. W. N. Pahnke’s breakdown of 69 cases of multiple sclerosis from the Edgar Cayce records, 3114-1 was classified in Group III.

B1. 6/12/43 [3114]‘s mother’s letter to EC:
“No doubt you are wondering at my taking the liberty of addressing you. Dr. Fleck of … asked me to write to you giving you particulars of my daughter’s illness.
“I will try to make the history as concise as possible. My daughter, [3114], was 17 years old last September 4th.
“When [3114] was between 7 and 8 we noticed a slight tremor in her left hand and we took her to a physician and he told us that it was concentration and not to worry about it - she would outgrow it. It didn’t lessen any as time went on and we noticed that both hands shook after a few years and we took her to another doctor and although he said he thought her condition was out of his line, he thought it might be intention tremors. At that time we thought it might possibly be due to an unusual amount of excitement at home. I had a child when [3114] was 12 years old and I was very sick and we thought possibly it might have an effect on her.
“When she was 13 years old she had her first convulsion while she was bathing. After that we took her to a Dr. Ribner, a nerve specialist in Bridgeport and he diagnosed her condition as ‘Encephalitis.’ The shaking in her hands didn’t get any worse and she was still able to go to school.
“When she was 14 years old she fell over a bicycle and broke her leg. Of course she was in a cast for eight weeks and when it came time for her to walk again she could walk only with the greatest difficulty and then only with help.
“We took her to several other doctors including Chiropractors. She began to have convulsions more often. We did notice that after each convulsion she walked better and was able to run around very easily - she acted as though it was a battery that had been overcharged and then let down.
“[3114] didn’t menstruate until she was 16 years old. All during this time - was tried so many doctors and finally, through the Crippled Children’s Clinic of Hartford, we took [3114] to the New Haven Hospital for observation by Dr. Fox, a medical neurologist. She had all sorts of tests made and they said definitely that it was ‘Encephalitis which came from having the mumps at about 7 years old. At the time she had the mumps, Dr. Fleck called to see her and she got through them okay. She didn’t have sleeping sickness after them which usually occurs, they say, in order to cause ‘Encephalitis.’
“Dr. Fox said she should have physiotherapy so we took her to the Clinic in Bridgeport. This all took place in November 1941. As the exercises didn’t seem to help her finally I spoke to the nurse at the clinic and asked her if something else couldn’t be done for her. After [3114] started to menstruate, we found that she was little better after a period. The good period would last only for a day or two and as she only had about three periods in a year, she didn’t have so many good days.
“Finally in August 1942 we took her again to the New Haven Hospital to see Dr. German, noted surgeon and after he examined her he said he thought he could help her. On August 24th he cut some cords in the back of her neck. I really can’t see any improvement in her although when we went back on February 19th, Dr. German said he thought she was a little better. She had only one convulsion since the operation and that was on Thanksgiving Day. She has come close to having one several times but manages to throw them off. We have our next appointment with him June 24th.
“It seems that after our visit to him February 19th he made a report to the Clinic here in Bridgeport that it might not be ‘Encephalitis’ but that it might be more glandular trouble. I have thought so right along.
“She has exercises to do but when she shakes and jerks so which she does a great deal of the time she can’t do them. When she is lying down she has perfect control of her legs and very nearly as good with her hands and arms but the minute she stands up she has no balance and can’t stand up alone. Since her operation and just so many days after her periods she has taken just a few faltering steps holding on to a table or a chair. For a month or two since her operation she had her periods quite regularly but she now hasn’t had a period since April with the result that she has had to spend most of the time in bed. She has tried only once to feed herself since last August.
“I feel that this has been a jumbled mess for you to plow through but couldn’t seem to make the report any other way. Dr. Fleck told me to tell you that he is on the staff at the Bridgeport Hospital and that you might be able to advise us something for [3114].
“How you will be able to without seeing her, I don’t know. But we can’t get down there. She can’t travel on the train and we couldn’t get there any other way.”
B2. 7/15/43 [3114]‘s mother’s letter to EC:
“I received your letter of July 3rd and was very glad to hear that you would be able to give [3114] a reading so much earlier.
“About the questions you asked me to send on, the most important ones of all are:
- What keeps her from walking without help?
- What causes her to have the constant tremors or the convulsive movements?
- Why is her condition a little better after her periods?
- Is her condition brought about by a condition of the brain or the glands?
“We will keep [3114] in her home that afternoon. We are located right on …”
