GC: You will give the relations of this entity and the universe, and the universal forces; giving the conditions which are as personalities, latent and exhibited in the present life; also the former appearances in the earth plane, giving time, place and the name, and that in each life which built or retarded the development for the entity; giving the abilities of the present entity, that to which it may attain, and how. You will answer the questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: (In going back over years from the present - ” - ‘34 - changes - ” etc., on back to birth date.)
-
Yes, we have the records here of that entity now known as or called [3129].
-
In giving an interpretation of the records as we find them, these we would choose from same with the desire that, with the use or application in the present experience, the entity may be able to fulfil more correctly those purposes for which it entered this present sojourn.
-
For, the entrance into the earth’s plane of the entity is not by chance. Neither is it destined as to what the end will be, but the opportunities are ever present. And if the ideals and purposes of the entity are lost in Him, the destiny is that of living and being a manifestation for and through Him, ever.
-
The entity should remember, “He that will be the greatest among you will minister to all.”
-
Then, as will be seen from appearances in the earth, the entity’s purpose is to learn those truths that are indeed the fruits of the spirit. Learning patience, longsuffering, kindness, gentleness, humbleness, is that purpose for the entity entering this experience.
-
In gaining the understanding, then, as to that in Whom and in What this may be complete, becomes the work of the entity; through the practicing and through the application of those tenets or truths.
-
Remember, that Creative Force - or God - is not mindful of persons. Neither has He willed that any soul should perish. Man looks upon the outward appearances and judges success by material standards. God looks on the heart and judges rather by the sincerity of the individual’s “try.”
-
For, remember, though he walked in many ways contrary to God’s edicts and laws, Abram’s try was counted to him for righteousness.
-
Urges are manifested in the experience of the entity. These arise from two definite sources. The application of the self, the ego, in those consciousnesses or awarenesses during the interims between earthly manifestations is one source. For convenience, such are at times accredited with certain influences; not because of the entity’s consciousness in those special environs or places, but because of the manner in which the awarenesses in those dimensions have been applied, that give latent urges.
-
But no urge, either from astrological or from material sojourns, surpasses the will of the individual; that gift from the Creative Forces making man equal with that Creative Force.
-
Thus there comes that injunction, that warning, that reminder, “As ye do it unto the least of thy brethren, ye do it to thy Maker.”
-
All that may be known of that Creative Force, then, is reflected in what an individual does about his relationships with his fellow man. For, as said of old, he that says he loves the Lord and hates his brother is a liar and the truth is far from him. But he that loves the Lord with all his heart, and his brother as himself, has found that awakening. Nothing new, but that merely which reminds the entity of the manner in which there should be the speaking, the warning, the urging the fellow man in his search for that Creative Force; which, aroused within the individual self, will lead on to the mark of the higher calling as set in Him.
-
Mercury, Venus and Jupiter are the ruling forces in the entity. Saturn is the stumblingblock at times. For, the great changes that come in the environ, in the thought, in application, are an urge from the desire to begin over again - or as represented in Saturn.
-
The universal consciousness is represented in the Jupiterian forces; the abilities as a peacemaker among the brethren arises from those urges latent and manifested there.
-
We find in Venus the beautiful, the worldly, the thought of “What will others say,” and the neglect at times of “What would He have me do?”
-
In Mercury we find the high mental abilities, as indicated in the activities of the entity oft.
-
As to appearances in the earth, - while not all are given, these are those that make for the greater influence at this particular period of the entity’s sojourn in the earth - according to the urge in the emotions of the body itself. Not all may be indicated, but we give these that the entity may know the Lord liveth and that He is God of the living and not of the dead.
-
Before this the entity was in the land of the present sojourn, rather than nativity; during those periods when there was much questioning as to the spiritual, or mystical and spiritual forces and the working of disincarnate forces in the experience of peoples - as to whether they were possessed or allowing themselves to become as tools for unruly, unseemly forces.
-
Then in the name Robert Calvert [Robert Calef? - See 3129-1, Reports], the entity made for many questionings, and acted in the capacity as a judge in the tenets of the very orthodox relations of church, of state, of peoples. Although the entity had been loud in its praise of and in its seeking out of freedom of speech, freedom of religious worship, intolerance became a part of the entity’s experience - that caused those anxieties.
-
Hence those influences in the present in which the entity finds that he almost attains, and yet there is an influence or a force apparently outside or beyond the control of the entity; that those with a varied concept to that of the entity’s become the ruling powers in high places.
-
For, as the entity measured to others, so the entity finds the meeting of itself in the present - in those tenets of individual natures.
-
Through the experience the entity gained materially; not attaining to its highest in its mental and spiritual attributes, and yet to the world a success - his name being well-spoken of in many ways in connection with that which influenced the lives of many groups of individuals.
-
Before that the entity was in the English land when there were the settlings there from those that were driven far afield.
-
The entity was among those groups to establish a place of refuge for many that were questioned as to their ideals, as to their way of worship, as to their activities.
-
The entity then was not so much as a ruler, but as an interpreter, an instructor for the various types of individuals.
-
Thus we find abilities within the entity’s present experience to interpret happenings, to interpret lives, to interpret purposes of various groups as to their use of offices of various natures in their relationships to others.
-
Hence there are the abilities of the entity as a teacher, as an instructor, as a writer, that may influence the lives of many.
-
Then in the name Culbertsen, the entity gained through those experiences. For, the entity tended to control those activities as to meet the needs, whether in law or in the material needs to supply that which would enable all to become closer bound in their purposes and aims - though of different opinions through those experiences.
-
Before that the entity was in Egypt when those peoples entered into the Holy Land, now called the Jewish or Hebrews.
-
Then the entity was among those selected to be in charge of those activities that dealt with the preparation of the temple in the wilderness, or the tabernacle that eventually became the temple.
-
And, as the entity has learned in the present, the body is indeed the temple, and that the pattern given in the mount is that pattern of the individual entity or self as it is set up and hedged about, and yet is the place where man meets his Maker.
-
The entity then became one well grounded in those tenets and truths, the weaknesses of the material needs oft overshadowing the entity, yet in those periods of the close walk with the leader who entered into the land there was brought peace and harmony into the experience.
-
Then the name was Elded.
-
Before that the entity was in the Egyptian land, when there were those disseminations of the truths and tenets set up by the Priest with the various groups, after the return of the Priest to papal power (termed in the present), or the religious or spiritual tenets.
-
The entity was among those prepared as emissaries to other lands; and the entity’s activities were especially in the Persian and Armenian land.
-
The name then was Duel-en.
-
As to the abilities of the entity, then, - as may be seen from the pattern, an instructor through the means or channels of a speaker or writer, or an edifier for those who are seeking to know their closer walk with Creative Forces.
-
Then, use thy abilities, use thy opportunities to the glory of the King, Christ; and it will be to the glory and honor of thyself.
-
Let thy understanding be holy (wholly) in Him, and ye will attain. For, the earth is indeed the Lord’s, and the silver and the gold are His, as the cattle on a thousand hills.
-
Then, walk in the light, as He is in the light, and there will be less of dismay, less of darkness, and more of contentment in the body-mind of the individual entity.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) What is my real mission in life? (A) To warn many of thy brethren.
-
(Q) How can I find the proper outlet for the larger service of mankind? (A) By calling on, by trusting in, by being one with that purpose for which the Way and the Truth and the Light has pointed in the world.
-
(Q) Please point the way in which I can enter into my life work and find true happiness. (A) First study thyself and thy ideals, and know - in spirit, in mind, in body - thy ideal is surely in Him as the Savior of ALL mankind. Forget thine own differences and know, as ye can interpret, the Lord is ONE - and ALL things work together for good, here a little, there a little, line upon line, precept upon precept, to those that love the Lord. And as ye would that others would do to thee, measure ye so to them.
In this light, and in this truth, there is life eternal - and ye will enter in, through the application of that in thy writing, in thy speaking, in thy living with thy fellow man.
- We are through for the present.

Dear Mrs. Turner:
Thank you for your answer to my question as well as for your expression of interest in my attempt to verify a portion of my Life Reading. I shall here review as briefly as I can the portions involving the name Robert Calvert - which I must continue to judge INCORRECT.
The pertinent paragraphs are “Before this the entity was in the land of the present sojourn, rather than nativity; during those periods when there was much questioning as to the spiritual or mystical and spiritual forces and the working of disincarnate forces in the experience of peoples - as to whether they were possessed or allowing themselves to become as tools for unruly, unseemly forces.
“Then in the name of Robert Calvert, the entity made for many questionings, and acted in the capacity as a judge in the tenets of the very orthodox relations of church, of state, of peoples.”
I was living in Boston at the time of the reading although I had grown up in Indiana; therefore, I interpreted “the land of the present sojourn” to mean either Boston or New England. Although no dates were given, the description of events taking place could fit no other period so exactly as that in which the Salem witchcraft trials took place.
I could not recall having known too much or being too interested either in that episode in particular or American history in general although for years I had felt a peculiar satisfaction in all the older sections of downtown Boston. Beyond a flicker of memory which might show itself as interest, I had only a trust in the mystic cycle of 144 years from birth to birth to guide me.
My birthdate being 1901, the first subtraction of 144 brought me to 1757, much too late for the Salem or Boston fracas, and the second subtraction took me to 1613, much too early.
The next paragraph of the reading, which should have brought more light, seemed to confuse matters hopelessly: “Then in the name as Robert Calvert, the entity made for many questionings, and acted in the capacity as a judge in the tenets of the very orthodox relations of church, of state, of peoples.”
For a matter of months, I searched the records for a Robert Calvert who fitted the description. The only representatives of that name in the New World were associated with Maryland, not Massachusetts. There was no Robert among them, and the line did not extend beyond the originals themselves, they being unmarried or having no heirs.
For years, the question was held in abeyance. Hearing of a new book by Marion Starkey, THE DEVIL IN MASSACHUSETTS, bearing on the subject, I was interested in the possibility of enlightenment so I made haste to read a copy.
The index revealed no Robert Calvert; but it did show a Robert Calef, whose character and activity fitted exactly with the details presented in the reading.
He was a Boston merchant rather deprecatingly referred to as a weaver who most assuredly “made for many questionings, and acted in the capacity of a judge.”
He seems to have been one of the few sane heads in the place, and weaver or cloth merchant though he was, he did not hesitate to make his own observations and draw his own conclusions. Nor did he hesitate to question repeatedly the decisions, theology, and reasoning of the Mathers, Cotton and Increase; and when they failed to give him satisfaction, appealing to the clergy at large. He followed Cotton Mather’s WONDERS OF THE INVISIBLE WORLD with a book of his own, MORE WONDERS, which was five times reprinted and is today recognized as the work of a mature and fair-intentioned individual possessed of an orderly mind.
I shall forgo inordinate praise although I am inclined to it, for Father Increase, as President of Harvard, burned this man’s book in Harvard Yard and son Cotton called him “a sort of Sadducee in this town.” And to have called the true infantile and fanatic character of these two divines to the fore is in itself a mead of praise and a modicum of comfort.
But the man’s name was not Robert Calvert. It was Robert Calef.
He was born in England in 1648 (?) (only 35 years out from the 1613 date expected). He came to Boston sometime before 1688 with his family. Two of his eight children were born after his coming to Boston, his eldest son being in 1692 a physician in Ipswich.
In addition to his business and his meddling (justifiable) in the witchcraft matter, Calef was from 1692-1710 a constable, hayward, and fenceviewer, a surveyor of highways, a clerk of the market, an overseer of the poor, an assessor, and a tithing-man!
He retired to his own property in Roxbury, Massachusetts, where he died and was buried in the old burial ground opposite his home, April 13, 1719, aged 71.
Robert Calef seemed to have lived and died consistent with his own integrity - a thoroughgoing Puritan and as dogged as John Bull himself.
The discrepancy of the name is easily accounted for as an error in transcription since the shorthand symbols are quite similar and substituting a familiar name for one unfamiliar would seem natural enough. I believe no one would hesitate to say that Robert Calef was the man whose record was referred to.
It might be harder, however, for another to see the connection between what Cayce says of the virtues and vices appertaining to Calef which still show in the present personality. But I feel they are there. The exact explanation of anything is as important to me as ever. Although today not even as successful as a weaver, cloth merchant, and being wholly inexperienced as a surveyor, hayward, constable, or overseer of the poor, I still will take issue with anyone so far as keeping the “record” straight. And I want to get it down on paper, too, in just the way I see it - step by step - even at the expense of seeming tedious and pettish.
Furthermore, I’m still unregenerate and a trifle stiff-necked: I’m a libertine in Puritan garb - and the Mathers and I are still at odds. Maybe they were right and I am a sort of Sadducee. “Hence those influences in the present in which the entity finds that he almost attains, and yet there is an influence or a force apparently outside or beyond the control of the entity… For as the entity measured to others, so the entity finds the meeting of itself in the present.”
Maybe I’m presumptuous and overhasty in feeling this settled
- but I’m proud of Robert Calef - he’s just the kind of man not only that I should have liked to be but the kind I still want to go on being for some time to come.
Sincerely, [3129]
ROBERT CALEF (1648?-1719)
Boston merchant (cloth) or a weaver who came to America sometime before 1688.
He was the father of eight children, at least two of whom were born after his coming to Boston.
His wife’s name was Mary.
Calef was in 1692 constable in 1694 hayward and fenceviewer in 1697 surveyor of highways in 1698 a clerk of the market in 1702-4 overseer of the poor in 1707 assessor in 1710 a tithing man
In 1707, he bought property in Roxbury. He died and was buried in the old burial ground opposite his home. A stone testifies: “Here lyes buried the body of Mr. Robert Calef, aged seventy-one years, died April the thirteenth, 1719.”
His eldest son was in 1692 a physician in Ipswich.
Calef was a friend of Thomas Brattle of Cambridge and his brother of Boston.
He wrote MORE WONDERS OF THE INVISIBLE WORLD in 1697. It was printed in 1700.* It was burned publicly in Harvard Yard. He questioned the procedure of the Salem Witchcraft, calling in question the definitions of the Mathers. Increase Mather (1639-1723) the president of Harvard.
Cotton Mather (1669-1728) son of above - pastor of North Church. Called Calef “a sort of Sadducee in this town.”
“Narratives of the Witchcraft Cases” 1648-1706 G. L. Burr (Scribner’s, 1914)

Gentlemen:
Until I read “There is a River,” I had never heard of Edgar Cayce. I was deeply impressed, and there came an inner conviction that a Life Reading would be of untold value to me at this point in my journey.
Since I was a small child, I have felt I had a mission in life, but I am now forty-two and seem to be far from realizing what that mission is. It is true that I have been searching and studying; yet the talents and abilities which were abundant and useful have found no proper outlet for the larger service of mankind which I both hoped and expected. I have come so far in hope and faith. A Life Reading will, I sincerely believe, allow me to see the pattern a little more clearly, will enable me to work with more assurance, and will point out to me a way in which I can enter into my life Work and find true happiness. I have every confidence that great light will be shed on my path. If I did not feel my need were so pressing and so fundamental, I should hesitate to lay myself bare to such examination as I know to be possible through Mr. Cayce’s ability.
Sincerely and gratefully yours, [3129]
