This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 18th day of July, 1943, in accordance with request made by the self - [3132], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research and Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by the book, THERE IS A RIVER.

Born February 10, 1904, in Canton, Ohio. Time of Reading 11:30 to 12:00 A. M. Eastern War Time. New York City.

1. GC: You will give the relations of this entity and the universe, and the universal forces; giving the conditions which are as personalities, latent and exhibited in the present life; also the former appearances in the earth plane, giving time, place and the name, and that in each life which built or retarded the development for the entity; giving the abilities of the present entity, that to which it may attain, and how. You will answer the questions, as I ask them:

2. EC: (In going back over years from the present - ” - ‘40 - some changes in the attitude - ‘34 - periods of anxiety - ‘28 - expectancies - ” etc., on back to birth date.)

3. Yes, we are given the records here of that entity now known as or called [3132].

4. In giving an interpretation of the records as we find them, there is much from which to choose. For, the activities in the earth have been often; yet these we would choose to give here with the desire and purpose that this information may be a helpful experience for the entity; enabling the entity to better fulfil those purposes for which it entered this sojourn.

5. For, a soul-entity enters not by chance, but rather through those influences wrought by the application of the soul-entity in the experiences, in the mental and spiritual forces necessary for the entity to become one with the Creative Force.

6. God has not willed that any soul should perish, but has with every temptation prepared a way, a means of escape. Thus, as the soul chooses - with the preparation brought by the union of mind and body - the expression enters, and there are those opportunities for applying such truths in the activities in the material plane to the glory of the Father, to the honor of the soul self.

7. In indicating those activities of the entity, while from the astrological aspects one may choose those things that have been accredited to certain influences, these are only relative to those influences upon the entity. For, no force, no influence is greater than the will of the entity. Nothing may separate the individual soul or entity from the knowledge, or from the love of God, save itself - by its own neglect or its own activity as relating to the use of that knowledge or understanding it may have.

8. With this entity we find Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Uranus, Saturn are a part of the experience.

9. One, then, high in its mental abilities, and yet one too often allowing others to direct the choices made.

10. One that should, with its abilities - as may be seen from the application of self in the material plane, GIVE directions oft, when it takes directions from others.

11. The entity is naturally of an analytical nature or mind; one that tends to seek for sources or causes, or the whys of certain influences in its experiences; having to do more, then, with the letter of the law than the spirit of the law, at times. This should also be correct in self.

12. In Jupiter we find those tendencies towards the universal consciousness, the natural inclination for the larger things. Thus the attraction in its activity to corporations, groups, companies that would be directing in their policies, and those things having to do with law would be a natural attraction. Yet there is the feeling for the greater truths, and these the entity may gain in the application of those tenets or truths as would direct in the organizations, - as in corporations that deal with the morality, as well as those things that would have to do with the law pertaining to national and international influences - as have been a part of the entity’s experience.

13. We find in Saturn the sudden changes that have come in this sojourn, as well as those variations in activities in the other experiences in the earth.

14. These we find, then, the latent influences that are a part of what may be called the dreams, or the innate force that directs the motivating forces of the entity, as an entity.

15. As to the appearances of the entity in the earth, - all of these may not be indicated here; for these alter according to the application of the individual to the opportunities in the earth, but with each cycle comes the various influences that are apparent from sojourns in certain material environments. These are given in the present, for the entity is in that stage or state in which changes may be made, or may be wrought in he activity of that chosen by the entity for its material activity.

16. The material is of the earth-earthy. The spiritual is of the heavenly or the motivative forces. The mental is ever the builder.

17. Then, apply self in the spiritual imports of tenets or truths that comply with the universal consciousness for the greater material benefits in the material plane.

18. That as would be manifested must first be in spirit, then in mind, then in material activity. For, this is the evolution of the earth, the evolution of things, the evolution of ideas and of ideals. For, He came into the earth that through Him man might have access again to the grace and mercy of those spiritual forces that are the directing ideals of each soul-entity.

19. Before this the entity was in the land of the present sojourn, in the early settlings of the land, when there had been the establishing of associations with other lands; especially as related to skins, animals, and those things from which clothing of certain natures was prepared.

20. The entity then acted in the capacity of the go-between, first with the natives, later with those of other lands.

21. Thus, as indicated, those organizations that would have to do with national and international laws or rules or regulations might easily be a part of the entity’s consciousness, through which there might be the greater outlet for the abilities of the entity.

22. The name then was Joseph Cokglin. The entity gained in the material, in the mental, and - in the latter portion of the experience - in the spiritual forces. For, those tenets of freedom of activity, as to the tenets and activities pertaining to the proper relationships of various activities or groups, become a part of the experience and the activity of the entity.

23. Thus we find those abilities as indicated in relationships with other lands.

24. Before that the entity was in the Roman land, when many lands were under the rule or direction of the Roman power; when those activities required individuals who acted in the capacity of providing means or ways in which certain tax levies were made upon groups.

25. The entity acted rather in the capacity of indicating how much, where and under what rule other lands could contribute, and would contribute, to the empire.

26. Thus the interest the entity finds in special portions of North Africa, as well as the Holy Land, and parts of what is now Armenia or Turkey. These are of special interest, and the entity may find an interest in products of those particular areas; as to the abilities and the changes that have come.

27. Hence the interest in history of peoples, developments of people, developments of groups, developments under certain religious or political rules.

28. Also we find the abilities indicated in the direction as one who might deal with those of other groups, or international law, international relationships. And as these are to be changed in the near future, as to how relationships of many lands are to be established with those lands under which the entity is active in the present, the entity may lend itself in activity and thus become an influence for good, through it abilities in these directions. These we would do.

29. The name then was Arden.

30. Before that the entity was in the Holy Land, where the peoples journeyed from the Egyptian land and settled there.

31. The entity then was among the natives, or of the peoples that were to be replaced by the activities of those peoples. But the entity was among those that enabled certain leaders to make overtures to the leader that was entering the land, and thus saving its peoples in the present.

32. From this we find those tendencies too oft for the entity to minimize its own abilities, and to be guided or to be acting under the orders of others; giving way too easily to the directions of others.

33. Know within self what you believe. Know the author of your belief, spiritually as well as mentally and materially. Then be willing to live, to stand, to do those things you know to be your conviction as to the correct manner in which they should be done; guiding the same by the spirit of truth, the universality of man’s dependency one upon another, to the glory of the Father in all things. For it is in Him we live and move and have our being.

34. And your purpose in the earth is, in every opportunity, in every activity one to or with another, to show forth His love until He comes again. For, remember ever, “In the manner as ye do it unto thy fellow man, ye do it unto thy Maker.”

35. The name then was Stephen Euentlern. In the experience the entity gained, the entity lost, the entity gained. Yet much of those experiences are oft visioned in the entity’s self in the present.

36. Before that the entity was in the Egyptian land, when there were those activities that were the outcome of the joining of those influences after the return of the Priest from banishment, and the preparations for various groups to represent the activities in the Egyptian land.

37. The entity acted in the capacity as an emissary to the land of Saad.

38. Hence we find the interest of the entity in the occult forces, and especially the Indian lore and the activities in that particular land.

39. The entity gained through that experience. For, those tenets that had been set by the priest, though the entity acted under the direction of the King, brought to both of those lands in that experience a closer relationship in all of the material, the political, as well as the universal or spiritual application of tenets or truths. Then named Peth-El-Er.

40. As to the abilities of the entity in the present, then, that to which it may attain, and how:

41. The chosen field of the entity’s activity is very well, but be more aggressive in its relationships. Also expand into that which will deal with the international things, especially that are just coming up. Offer self in these relationships first with the ability to supply the relationships of law as related to enabling groups, nations and peoples to rehabilitate themselves after the cessation of hostilities, which will not be too far off for the activities of the entity to be a contribution to the welfare of His cause in the earth.

42. Keep the faith of thy fathers. Keep those tenets you applied in those relationships in Egypt. Be far from those you applied in the Holy Land in dealing with the certain groups because of their position. For, the Lord looks not on the outward appearance but upon the heart.

43. Ready for questions.

44. (Q) Should I throw myself more into a political or more public life, or should I get farther away from the world in my endeavors - such as in writing or even farming? (A) More into the public, or for the general welfare of the country, of the land. Be more aggressive, and in that particularly as related to international interests.

45. (Q) Are there any obstacles of fear, habit, thinking and acting, that ought to be correct or removed? (A) As indicated, those tendencies to listen to others, or not sufficiently aggressive in that you DO know.

Keep the faith, though, in the spiritual things.

46. (Q) What has been my past relationship with my daughter, […], and how may I overcome her indifference to me? (A) In the experience in the Holy Land, we find there were the variations as had to do with political as well as the moral relationships, that causes the indifference. Be true to self, and you will not be false to any.

47. (Q) Is my relationship with others what it should be? (A) Who shall be the judge but thyself, thine own conscience? For, today there is ever set before thee good and evil - choose thou. For, as ye choose, it is life or death - and the creative forces are to the living, not the dead.

Dear Mr. Cayce:

Thank you for your letter of November 5, 1943, and enclosed check. You made the check for too much money, because it is more than I advanced. It should have been for 30. and I am accordingly returning herewith my check for 10.

I went last evening to Steinway Hall hoping to be able to hear you and perhaps to meet you. Although I arrived at least twenty-five minutes before the scheduled hour for your lecture the room and hallway were already so crowded that it was impossible to gain admittance. As I live some forty-five minutes from the City I was unable to stay because of train connections. I chanced to overhear an observation of an elevator operator at the Hall to the effect that your representatives should have engaged Carnegie Hall or perhaps Madison Square Garden, and from the number who sought admission he may have been correct.

But I was as interested in the large number of people who sought to be able to listen to you as I might have been in hearing everything you had to say, because that fact seems to have a definite meaning. It means to me that there must be millions of people definitely seeking some faith or hope more tangible and real than those commonly accepted in the past. Or perhaps it is a new approach and interpretation. Whatever it may be, the fact remains that the interest of such a large number, and from my observation intelligent people, could not have arisen out of mere curiosity.

I have been speculating for some time about some of the matters contained in the releases and bulletins of the Association. It seems that individual historical references are altogether confined to the Mediterranean Theatre with a marked absence of references to Asia or the north countries. Inasmuch as three fourths of the world population lived and now lives in those sections, I am puzzled that there are not at least some references to such sections of the world.

Again in one of the bulletins there is a reference to a story about a princess, her suitor and a serving maid, with the latter, I believe, eventually being thrown to the lions. The story was a little too romantic, which is a mild word, for my ready acceptance of its credibility. I am ready to admit, however, that such fortuitous events are possible, but my point in such case is that they hardly lend substance to a movement to establish faith in this day and age. Inasmuch as their publication would seem to be a matter of selection, it occurs to me that a more realistic approach might eliminate such stories in favor of others more consistent with the purpose to be accomplished.

Please understand that I don’t want to be skeptical or destructively critical, and that my observations are made with the idea of being helpful. I am sorry I was not able to hear you and meet you and hope your lecture will be published that I may have a copy of it.

R4. 2/10/49 Herbert J. Holmes, in N.Y.C. trying to set up the E.C.F. fund raising campaign, wrote: “[3132] is attorney for … Company, specializing in labor relations… He’s a deep student - well versed in all kinds of side branches of the occult.”

R5. 9/15/49 Mr. [3132] visited A.R.E. in Virginia Beach. At that time GD was preparing and sending out personal questionnaires to those who had obtained Life Readings. Mr. [3132] felt that these questionnaires were inadequate, since he felt that no one would or could be truthful enough to answer such personal questions correctly. He worked with GD in preparing the following questionnaire which was thereafter used:

Some years have passed since you received a Life Reading from Edgar Cayce. No doubt much has transpired in that interval for you - we assure you it has for us. As you probably know, Edgar Cayce passed on from this plane in January 1945. Since then, because of the readings and because of the eternal good that was Edgar Cayce’s life, we are impelled to carry on certain phases of this work. No small influence in this regard are the mounting requests with which we have been literally besieged from those who did not receive personal readings and who have heard or read about Edgar Cayce and his work.

We are positive that a law of universal validity lies behind the Life Readings and one of our projects is to be able to state that law in terms so simple and so complete that no one

• absolutely no one - can gainsay its truth. To this end we solicit and need your help. Will you please take the time to fill out and return the questionnaire below? The happiness of many lives may be in the balance between your doing this and your not doing this.

Dear mr. Cayce;

I am returning the manuscript by [Werner] Zimmermann on Lichtbote of Edgar Cayce. It is a very well done piece although if I may say so, not brilliantly written in style. I am sure there could be no objection by you or any of your family to its publication and all facts, so far as I know them, are accurately stated.

You will note I have made some minor suggestions with respect to form and language but they are really “fly specks”.

I am sending this to you as I do not know Zimmermann’s address and I know you will pass it along to him.

Please let me know when you are next in New York.

R8. 7/17/51 [3132]‘s ltr. to HLC:

Dear Hugh Lynn,

Many thanks for your letter. In a separate memorandum I am trying to put down some of my thoughts with respect to the future activities and work of the Foundation and will have it in your hands by the August 1 deadline.

It occurs to me that at any Congress you might hold in the future there should be a greater and wider distribution of copies of Readings and that selected copies should be got together to go with and supplement lecture subjects. I would definitely cut down on the number of lectures and also the number of courses. Additional, I would hold the Congress in the Fall some time after Labor Day.

A remark made many years ago by Woodrow Wilson in connection with the organization problem at Princeton seems apropos with regard to the activity of the Association as compared with the work done upon the Readings. He observed that the sideshow was about to swallow up the circus and it occurs to me that this is about what has happened when we review the time, energy, interest and money which has been spent on the Association as compared with that spent on typing, cataloging, indexing and making available the Readings. To use another simile, it is inconceivable that anyone would build, for example, an oil refinery without having the raw petroleum available.

In view of my pending move abroad which would keep me away for at least two years and the consequent lack of time that I could devote to the affairs of the Association, I do not feel justified in accepting a position on its Board of Trustees. I am, however, deeply appreciative of the honor and ask to be excused from serving with sincere regret.

I am very interested in trying to do some work on the Palestine material which, as a matter of fact, I have never seen. Is there a copy available that you could send to me? Please do so if you can spare one.

I would very much welcome an opportunity for a good discussion with you about all of these matters and hope your plans will soon permit you to come to New York. Please do come and stay with us.

Dear Mr. Cayce:

I have read Thomas Sugrue’s story about your work and your life in his book “There Is A River” and I am very interested. The work you are able to do is entirely for good and, in fact, I believe could not be otherwise. Sometimes we work against the forces around us, other times we work with those forces but always, regardless of how we work, there is a force in us that moves through us. I have always believed that the individual problem on this earth is to achieve the fullest possible free expression of the individual personality. As I understand what Mr. Sugrue has written, this is one way of expressing the work you are trying to accomplish and I believe in it because it is a force for the good.

I want to have some readings. Having been a lawyer, I know something of the limitations under which you have to work and so I ask for your advice and do not expect or want you to tell my fortune. I solicit a membership in your Association, want to become a member, and will make contributions to it, voluntarily and not for any advice you may give me.

I want to have a life reading and a physical reading for my wife, my daughter and myself. My home address is …, New York City. Will you please write and tell me how this may be accomplished.

B2. 4/19/43 [3132]‘s letter: My troubles seem to come from what I conceive to be good thoughts and thoughts for the good, carried into action. They are my own thoughts and my own actions. In a way they do produce good - some good, but, they are attendant with unpleasant consequences for me and an incomplete and reluctant acceptance by others. I have questions of whether I am doing the right work and trying for a good different than and much greater than the immediate and material, in the right field. It is my hope that something from the other mind may be of help for I believe I have capacity and talent to be of great good, if what I have be properly directed and employed. Needless to say, I believe, although I profess no particular religion.

Dear Mr. Cayce:

I am a bit puzzled by the type and kind of question to ask. My problem appears primarily a conflict in my own soul, a resistance to the acceptance of common conventions and a refusal to adjust my thoughts to those of the mass, unless I personally believe them to be sound and correct. I have an abhorrence of sham, deceit, hypocrisy and an urge to go always and immediately to what I believe to be the core of the matter. I have a basic faith in the goodness in my fellowmen but my experiences repeatedly dictate a skepticism and doubt. And so I appear always to toss myself into some of the following problems:

Am I doing the right kind of work: By all accepted standards I am successful in my work but yet I have a feeling perhaps I should be more independent in my work. Perhaps it should be kind of work - writing or even farming, in which I could get farther away from a world gone crazy and going crazier. Sometimes I feel I should go the other way and throw myself more into that world through political life or more public life for I have a capacity and personality of giving people a confidence in me and what I tell them. But then I feel I could never really tell them the truth because I really don’t know the truth and while there is but one ultimate truth it does not seem to satisfy the many contradictions and irreconcilable problems which our civilization has created. What I really mean by, am I doing the right kind of work, is am I leading the right kind of a life, am I thinking the right kind of thoughts, are there any obstacles of fear, habit, thinking and acting that ought to be corrected or removed. Is my relationship with others what it should be? My wife and I are very dear to each other but my daughter, who is devoted to her mother, is indifferent to me although I love her dearly. What is the matter there? I have tried everything and come now to patience and faith, faith in myself and my family.

There are some of my problems. They are very intense to me and I feel them deeply. They are more real to me than water, earth or stone and they gnaw at my soul. There must be some answer other than time - there must be some fourth dimensional answer.

I do hope this letter reaches you in time for the reading.

I want to arrange for a reading for my wife and daughter. Will you please tell me how this may be done on my membership and when.
