GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [3137].
-
Now as we find, there are those conditions that disturb the body. These in the main are rather the result of the “batteries” of the body having run down; thus slowing up the eliminations, producing inability to store energies in the body. Thus the periods of tiredness, languidness; yet the mind of the body works on. This slows up the heart activity, making for poor eliminations, some disturbances with the prostates owing to the activity of the kidneys. For, this is as the batteries of the body, one being positive and the other negative. Thus the acidity in the system and all of these cause these general conditions, as well as that more specific where the poor circulation through the superficial activity causes irritation at times to parts of the body, in a form of rash that appears.
-
As we find these we would apply for the body.
-
First, we would prepare a compound to be taken internally.
-
To two gallons of water, in an enamel container (not tin, but copper can be used - do not use a metal top, but rather a glass cover or an enamel when this is set to boil, or the copper top it this is available) add - in the order named:
Yellow Dock Root…2 ounces, Burdock Root…1 ounce, Snake Root…2 ounces, Buchu Leaves…15 grains, Podophyllin…1/2 grain, Ragweed (green)…1 ounce, Elder Flower…4 ounces.
- Reduce this by slow boiling to once gallon. Then add to this:
Rye Whiskey (90%)…1/2 pint, with Balsam of Tolu cut in same …3 drams. [See 3137-1, Par. R7.]
-
The dose of this would be a teaspoonful four times each day, after each meal and at bedtime.
-
When about half the quantity has been taken, begin having general osteopathic relaxing treatments - at least half a dozen.
-
Do these, and we will bring better conditions for this body.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Any advice regarding diet? (A) Keep away from too much starches. Fresh vegetables are very well. Very few of tomatoes raw. Though the cooked tomatoes are very well. Not too much of corn though boiled corn, preferable to that fried. Squash, beans, leeks, spinach and the like we would take. Fish and fowl often. Ham or beef not at all. Breakfast bacon a little, very crisp. Eggs only boiled, never fried. These are not all, but the type of foods the body should take.
-
(Q) Any local application for rash? (A) Use Zemo on the irritated portions. As well as on the rectal and the prostate areas.
-
We are through for the present.

General Delivery Albuquerque, New Mexico
Dear Mr. Cayce,
The Reading has been forwarded to Albuquerque where I expect to live. (This was my home before going South.) Many thanks.
I imagine some of the things in the compound will be difficult to get here. If they are will you please refer me to a drug store where I can get them? I am not located where I could prepare it, but expect to be in a short time. Will aluminum kettle be all right?
If I could only get rid of the PAINS in MY LEGS and GET six to eight hours of sleep I would feel as if I had found the “Fountain of youth.” My pains have been with me for MANY YEARS. The doctors don’t seem to know the cause. And consequently have not helped me. I have been careful about diet and that has been helpful.
I have been to the best osteopaths but without any results. But on your recommendation I will try again, as there is a VERY GOOD one here.
With best wishes,
Yours truly, [3137]
R2. 8/27/43 EC’s letter:
Professor [3137] Gen. Delivery, Albuquerque, New Mexico
Dear Prof. [3137]
Thank you for yours of the 19th. I suppose the best place that you could be sure you get most of these drugs would be the Meredith Drug Co., here at Va. Beach. They might prepare this whole compound for you.
I have to warn you, though, that they are very slow and a little expensive. You should be able to get any good druggist to get these things together for you with little trouble and it shouldn’t be so very expensive. Do let us hear from you from time to time. We are certainly far, far ahead with appointments at present, and they are coming in much faster than we can do anything with and are nearly 12 months in advance.
Thanking you and hoping that this will be of help, I am,
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce

Mr. Edgar Cayce, Virginia Beach, Va
Dear Mr. Cayce:
It has been rather a slow process getting PERMANENTLY located since coming to Albuquerque. I was all ready to carry out instructions and expected to have my medicine bottled up by this time. But when I went to the drug STORES most likely to be able to fill the prescription I was told they did not have several of the ingredients. I am enclosing a blank check and will appreciate it if you will have a druggist in Virginia Beach fill it. There is an Osteopath here that has a fine reputation and in due time will see him.
I am expecting to make Albuquerque my home. I like it well enough to RETURN after having been away thirty years.
I trust that all is going well with you.
Please KEEP a dollar for “A Search for God.”
Yours sincerely, [3137]
P.S. The pains in my legs have not come on with old age but they have been with me since I was a boy.

R5. 11/3/43 EC’s letter:
Prof. [3137] …, New Mexico
Dear Prof. [3137]:-
I have yours of the 31st. We have been trying to get the people here to give us some kind of answer in regard to the formula for you. They have promised to order it and let us hear from them as soon as they were able to get it. As you know, most of the people are so busy they do not pay much attention to some small article, but we are still trying to get them to take care of it, and I do hope to be able to send it to you, or have them send it to you. I am having one of the secretaries call the druggist right now to find out about it. I am really sorry of this great delay, but know that it is not our fault.
Thanking you for your interest, and with every good wish, I am,
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce EC/vc
P.S., The druggist just informed me there are two of the ingredients that are, under present circumstances unable to be gotten. I see no other way than when I return from a little rest period, to write you, and get another appointment and check up and see what can be substituted in the place of this, if anything.
Have patience with us though, and hoping you are feeling a whole lot better, EC

Mr. Edgar Cayce, Virginia Beach, Va
Dear Mr. Cayce,
I have been intending to write for some time past, but I have been unusually busy. Very unexpectedly I was called on to teach four classes in psychology until the first of March. I am enjoying it very much, and am in as good health as usual.
My appointment is for January 17, (next Monday) 1:30 Mountain time. I will plan to be in my room at that time alone. Hope that I will have a successful reading this time. You will find enclosed some questions.
Yours sincerely, [3137]
I have had pains in my legs since I was a boy; not intense but constant. What is the cause? Is it organic or functional? I scarcely ever have pains above the waist; altho I have occasionally had a headache this past fall. I am very careful about my eating. I live on a very simple diet. Have eaten little or no meat the past few months, but can not notice any change in my pains. I also have cold feet even in the summer time. What is the cause? The Doctors say that my circulation is normal. Is there any cure for the pains and the cold feet? Sometimes I have to get up at night to urinate. It is difficult then and in the morning, while it is sometimes difficult to control during the day. Is there any remedy? I am never sick in bed. Did not miss a class in 25 years on account of sickness, but I am never far from pain.
Can you arrange for a life reading in the near future?

B1. 4/26/43 [3137]‘s letter:
Mr. Edgar Cayce Virginia Beach, Va.
Dear Mr. Cayce;
An article in News Observer, Sunday April 25, by Nelle Battle Lewis concerning you and your work has interested me very much; (first) I am interested in psychic phenomena, and (second) I think you may be able to help me.
I am a minister, and teacher of education and psychology. I am 71 years old, have led a very active life, have tried to take good care of myself, and am seldom ever sick; in fact I have not missed a class for several years on account of sickness. But I have had muscular pains in my legs since I was a boy; not acute, but constant day and night and more intense some times than at other times. I have been at some of the best clinics in the country, including Mayos and they can find no cause for my pains and no remedy. My sleep is broken, I have cold feet unless it is a very warm day and I am more or less handicapped in my work. If I could get rid of these pains I feel that I would have several happy years in which I might continue to serve.
If you can do any thing for me I would appreciate it very much. Could you see me some time in the early part of June, or the latter part of May? What are your charges for examination?
Yours sincerely, [3137]
B2. 5/13/43 [3137]‘s letter:
Dear Mr. Cayce,
I was glad to hear from you again, and am looking forward with pleasure to the time when I can have a visit with you. If I can carry out my present schedule I shall see you about the first of June.
“There is a River” came a few days ago and I gave it priority. To say that I enjoyed reading it is to put it mildly.
Your life has certainly been an unusual one. I am glad that in Jesus you have found the great source of inspiration and edification. While I do not accept some of your interpretations, I have an open mind. You may be right; the scholars may be wrong. If so, that is not the first time. Jesus is the great illustration, but in this respect he is not unique. The trail blazers all down the centuries have departed from the generally accepted view of things, and have suffered criticism and ostracism. Perhaps there is no better illustration in modern times than Alexander Campbell.
I need not hark back to the days of my Father who was an Elder in The Christian Church for forty years. In my high school days a certain preacher warned his members from going to the court house where an evangelist of The Christian Church was holding a meeting because he was preaching “damnable heresy.”
What we want are facts - facts that have been substantiated beyond the peradventure of a doubt. I am sorry you did not get the co-operation of Dr. Rhine of Duke, and Dr. Murphy of Columbia. While you have not advertised your work, it “has not been done in a corner.” Men who believe in the advancement of science should give you a fair and impartial hearing.
It would seem to bad that you had to close the hospital which was proving so helpful to many people, but it may be that greater good will be accomplished in the way you are now working.
Yours very sincerely, [3137]
B3. 5/29/43 GD’s note: He visited EC in Virginia Beach.

Mr. Edgar Cayce, Virginia Beach, Va
Dear Mr. Cayce,
Travelling from the East coast I spent the week-end visiting relatives in Cincinnati. While there I secured a copy of The Christian Century and read with more than usual interest Mrs. Bros’s review of There is a River. I am glad that such ample space was given her review and hope that it may attract wide attention. I think her suggestion at the close is an excellent one, and I should like to very heartily second it. I should like for a COMPETENT committee go into the matter carefully and thoroughly and publish their findings.
It was very cool in Chicago. Top coats and steam heat was the order of the day. Within eighteen miles of my destination I was held up for several hours on account of high waters in Missouri. I will be here for some time with relatives before going on to my final destination.
I can not tell you how much I appreciated my visit with you and the courtesy you extended me. I always feel quite at home with people who have a rich Disciple background, and who are interested in more abundant living - physical, mental and spiritual. I have had some interest in psychic phenomenon ever since my college days and I find it increasing as the years go on.
I am grateful to you for giving me a date July 19 and granting to me Associate Membership.
May God’s blessing be upon you in your effort to serve your fellow-men.
Yours sincerely, [3137]
