Time of Reading 10:55 to 11:10 A. M. Eastern War Time. …, Michigan.

1. GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them:

2. EC: Yes, we have the body here, [3174].

3. As we find, while there are disturbing conditions, and some become very aggravating to the body at times, we find that little, if any, administration here will be of special benefit until there is more peace - or less of consternation within self.

4. True, help has come through those channels that to many would be questionable. But this has only enabled the body-mind of the entity, or individual to concentrate. For the ideals are far from being decisive in the mind of the body.

5. And all illness comes from sin. This everyone must take whether they like it or not; it comes from sin whether it be of body, of mind, or of soul, and these manifest in the earth.

6. For, who healeth all thy diseases? Uncle John, or God the Father? This must be determined in self. For, God is spirit and seeketh such to worship Him in spirit and in truth.

7. True, there are pathological conditions that are disturbed with this body. But do the first thing first. There should be a decision within self, first, as to what you believe. And know it must begin with the spiritual purposes of life.

8. Who is the author of life? Who is the Saviour of life? Who gave His life that ye might have life more abundant? What is light and life in the earth?

9. If you cannot answer these within yourself, you are far, far from knowing the way home.

10. For the soul seeks its own - in Him, who is the light, the life, the way.

11. And when there are rebellions of body or mind against such, is there any wonder that the atoms of the body cause high blood pressure or cause itching, or cause running sores, or cause a rash, or cause indigestion? For, all of these are but the rebellion of truth and light, error and correction in a physical body.

12. For thy body is indeed the Temple of the Living God. What have you dragged into this Temple?

13. Seek the Lord while He May be found and then apply just plan every day judgment to the disturbance of this body; and ye will find that ye will grow in grace, in knowledge, in understanding. And this means in all phases of the life. For, what is the first premise? KNOW THAT THE LORD THY GOD IS ONE LORD. That is of soul, of mind, and of body. When the soul, that image of the Creator is attuned to the divine, you are on the road to meeting thine own self, and all will be well with thee.

14. There have been those disturbances in the body. When you have found yourself and your relationships, and know your ideals in body, in mind, in the physical being, then purify the body with plain water - through hydrotherapy applications, yes. These should include colonic irrigations, cabinet sweats, and thorough massages. And we will find in these there will be gained the greater help and influence in the body.

15. Then, when you have given these suggestions full, full, attention we may aid the more.

16. (Q) What can be done to save the use of my left leg? (A) Keep the body fit and perfect the relationships of mind, body and soul to perfection. Is it not written, better that ye enter into the kingdom with the loss of hand or foot than that all shall be cast into hell-fire? This wasn’t written for fun - it means what it says.

My dear Mr. Cayce:

I have just been reading Mr. Sugrue’s book and during the last few chapters I have had such an overpowering urge to write you that I find I cannot even wait to finish the final section entitled “Philosophy”. I don’t know how anyone can read this book with any degree of understanding or open-mindedness without being changed for the better thereby. I believe it came to me in answer to my earnest prayer for help at a time of great crisis in my inner life.

Do you ever give a combination Life Reading and Physical Reading? Of course I suppose it wouldn’t be exactly NECESSARY to have them both at one time if that would prolong it beyond what would be compatible with your welfare. The point is this: It appears that for me the most important problem to be worked out in this life pertains to my physical body. And that which I most desire from the Life Reading at the present time is an understanding of the spiritual truths and karmic laws underlying and applicable to this present manifestation in the physical; and also methods of mastery of the physical forces by means of Mind and Spirit.

I have been a seeker after and student of spiritual truth all my life and yet the phase that I have needed most has eluded me, probably because of some blind-spot in my make-up somewhere. The conflicting ideas of various teachings pertaining to the physical body have confused me to such an extent that in spite of the fact that I have long known in a general way what I must accomplish. I have failed miserably; even though I have striven most earnestly and with consecration to “present my body a living sacrifice unto the Lord” as my “reasonable service” while I sought “first the Kingdom of God and His Righteousness” (right-use-ness). I have recently been at the bottom of the pit of black despair, able to see the Light above, but held back by the exhaustion of my strength and resources plus the futility of past efforts, from again initiating the struggle upwards. Fortunately my Faith did not desert me and I knew there must be, - and IS, - a Way. And further, - that the Way is open to me as much as to any other, in spite of past mistakes, sins and failures. (What I must have done, - or failed to do, - at some time or other to have built such mountainous karmic obstacles!) And so I prayed, - and will, to find it, while there is yet time and strength left to struggle. And the Lord has led me to you, - one who has dedicated himself, his life and the great Gift to the service of Universal Love,

• a channel for the Work of God. I believe you can help me. I believe you will understand something of what I feel. I too, would give myself for His Use. (The world need is so great.) But I must first be fit. I am worth very little this way. I am a burden to others instead of a help. I must win my own battles first. There is a wide separation between my body and the rest of me. I must become a Whole.

I am badly crippled with arthritis of long standing. I want to know the cause. Not just the physical cause, though the Doctors have not definitely found even that in years of search. I want to know the karmic cause and also the physical, mental and emotional channels employed to manifest it. It is all tied up with my emotional life, becoming evident almost at once after my marriage. Before that I had what seemed to be an exceptionally fine body. I have done much work in the way of mental and emotional control, and have endeavored to keep the laws of the body as far as I understood them (moderation in all things), but still my body gets more and more useless.

Please don’t get the idea that I reject physical methods of healing. I believe in using every way God has provided. But I wouldn’t be honest unless I told you that I may not be able to follow as I should all the means which may be prescribed in a Physical Reading. I have such limited action in my joints and muscles that there are many things I cannot do. Also, I do not know now where I will find anyone to give me massage or similar treatments. However, I am not one to anticipate difficulties merely because of past experiences with them. Hope and Faith may open a way. So I want the complete Physical Reading and will do all in my power to follow the instructions. Perhaps the Reading itself will suggest ways and means after sizing up the situation.

Most of all I am interested in spiritual healing because it seems to deal with the basic cause. Have the Readings ever discussed the possibilities and methods of such? I am trusting by this means to make up for what I may not be able to do in material ways. I was particularly happy and gratified to note the statement at the bottom of page 375 - top of 376 to the effect that karma “is not greater than free will.” (This caught my eye in passing.) Also, “so long as there is free will anything is possible.” I would like to have that elaborated in my Reading. I notice it does not say merely that it is possible to keep the consciousness polarized more or less ABOVE karma. It says “anything is possible.” I truly believe that “all things are possible with God.” To outer sense a complete healing for me would seem impossible. And yet I do not feel that way, - although I am PRIMARILY interested in INNER healing, - purification and harmonization on ALL planes to bring about perfect alignment and wholeness. But that would imply at least a partial outer healing to follow, - enough to make the body serviceable anyway. And more than that, I am interested in fulfilling the spiritual purpose of this incarnation as it was mapped out in the beginning of it. Does that show you how, to me, the inner and outer problems are but two sides to the same thing?

One of the questions I would most like to ask is in connection with the Science of the Great Breath. If you happen to have read the book ‘Biopneuma’ by the Illuminate known as Levi, you will understand to what I refer. It gives the best exposition of it that I know of. I would like to know how much the Readings agree with this system. As you may know, Levi is also the transcriber from the Akashic Records of “The Aquarian Gospel of Jesus the Christ”, in which Jesus says: “The fount of health is in your soul; it has a door locked fast; the key is faith. And everyone can have this key and may unlock the door and plunge into the healing fount and be made whole.” Also: “The laws of nature are the laws of health, and he who lives according to these laws is never sick. He who obeys the laws, maintains an equilibrium in all his parts, and thus insures true harmony; and harmony is health, while discord is disease.” And again: “The greatest power in heaven and earth is thought. Why think it strange that I should send a healing thought and change the ethers of disease and death to those of health and life?” And many more concerning the power of the will, etc. I believe these fully, and it seems plain enough, yet I have not been able to prove them in this body. I don’t know why, except that for some time I did not exercise my will in this, fearing that it might be in conflict with God’s Will, but instead resigned myself to learning to live ABOVE the whole condition as much as possible. However lately I have become convinced that even karmic obstacles are not His Will IF we have come to the place where we can summon enough power to rise above them and change them, - that is, if the vision, faith, harmonization and will are great enough, and we are ready and willing to pay our debts in a more useful way; for of course, the only possible way to master our forces if by willing in harmony with His Will and being ready to serve His Purposes. Of course, I have many faults and weaknesses, and have made some grievous mistakes, - some because of false teachings, and many through listening to my arguing intellect. But I have always been more or less aware of the high purposes of my soul, even when not understanding them enough to follow them when they conflicted with worldly reason.

I am sorry to take so much of your time with this letter. If I could be present in person for the Readings, it would not be necessary, I know. How I wish I could! If only the Hospital were still functioning! But in my present condition, I do not know how I could manage it. So I am writing all this that you may have a better idea of the type of information I need and want. I will leave it to you to formulate the questions. Also, I don’t know just what you present regulations require of one to qualify for a Reading, but needless to say, I am more than willing to join the Association, and to pay whatever you ask.

I am so thankful to have found this book with its revelation of you and your work. I wish I could tell you what help it has given me already, just to know of these blessings bestowed through you. I was almost frantic with despair at the failure and utter waste of my life, and my apparent helplessness to do anything about it. Perhaps now, at last, I may be able to take up my task once more and to gain a little headway toward my goal. But even were I to receive no help from the Readings, I would still be thankful to know of you. It is such as you in whom rests the hope of the world. For, while I believe I know something of the deep sadness that is in your heart that in all your search you have found no one who had both the inner qualifications and the outer means to help you fulfill your dream, yet after all, as I see it, it is the radiance into the world consciousness of your life and Being, as well as the great Truths expressed in the Readings, that is of greatest importance. This is enduring and it cannot fail. It is the leaven that will ultimately raise the whole mass. You are fulfilling your part, freely giving your all, making these blessings universally available to the best of your ability. It is a great pity that it cannot be universally received. Nevertheless, it WILL be sometime, - or at least the spirit of it. Your fate is that of all pioneers in the spiritual field. But such work is never lost. Always the Gift is there, - and the Truth behind the Gift, - ever waiting to bestow its Joy upon each and every one as his eyes tardily awake to the glorious perception of its great value. “The mills of the gods grind slowly, but exceeding fine.”

P.S. I did forget one thing. I would like to ask if the spiritual contacts in the group I have been attending recently are what they claim to be, and if the spiritual healing given is effective.

Dear Mr. Cayce -

Thanks you so much for your prompt response to my letter, the individual case study and the Association booklet. I am more than ever interested in your work and that of the Association and would like to become an Active Member if I am considered qualified. As I wrote you, I have been interested in Spiritual truths, and their everyday application and practice, all my life. It so happens that my past fields of study have been the metaphysical and the occult, - the purely psychic having been brought to my attention only rather recently, so that at the present time my interest may be said to be focused more specifically in psychic research. But Truth is One and there are merely different aspects of It. I am about convinced that the psychic phase, particularly, is the one channel through which God is most likely to reach the mass mind, which is at present so asleep in materialism, - and therefore the one to emphasize. So I have given myself over to an intensive investigation of this aspect. For many years I have acted as leader of various Truth - Study Groups and have done considerable writing in connection with them. A little over a year ago these activities were discontinued and there followed for me an agonizing period of soul-searching mental unrest and discontent, and a sense of futility. I had gained much that was constructively useful, - I had mastered many problems in myself and my environment, - there were those who felt they had received help through me, - but still I became more and more convinced I had not found the work which is mine to do. Then the opportunity for psychic investigation came to me. I was invited to attend in the home of a friend, a group meeting which they called a Master Circle. As far as is known locally, it is something unique in Spiritualism. It is a trumpet circle in which (except for the guides) only Master Teachers purporting to be on the Seventh Plane Vibration, are permitted to speak. The group is made up of those who are interested in preparing themselves for spiritual service, many being like myself, without previous affiliation with Spiritualism. There is one woman who is able, - almost unbelievable - to take a record in short hand in the dark, so that we may secure typewritten copies of the subject matter for reference and study. The material is very impressive and seems to be harmonious with the Philosophy given in your Readings, as well as with many of the generally accepted ideas from other Teachings. It was to this that I referred in the post-script of my former letter.

I have read the booklet carefully as requested and I still wish to have a Reading as soon as you can get to me, even though it has to be near November. I notice the booklet says you DO give preference to emergency conditions and I should think it perfectly right to do so, for it might mean saving a human life, which is certainly far more important than most cases would be, even though serious. Of course, that would not apply to me or change my status in any way. My case is chronic and I can wait better than many, although two months will progress a joint condition to the place of deformity.

My present treatment consists of very large doses of all the vitamins, - especially massive doses of Vitamin D, - and I also take a prepared wafer containing Dicalcium Phosphate, Calcium Gluconate with Viosterol. I noticed the arthritis treatment given said: “Keep away…from Salines, limes & silicon.” I wonder if “limes” would refer to calcium. This has been, - & is frequently, - prescribed by physicians. I thought I would do what I could to follow in a general way this treatment prescribed for M. J. McC. until I could get my own Reading, although there are so many different kinds of arthritis, mine might be entirely different. In accord with this plan, I would like to ask if Atomidine is available generally now, - or if not, - where there patients procure it? Iodine has been prescribed for me, so I’m sure I would be safe in taking it. I have taken drops of tincture of iodine & also a form called Lipoiodine in tablets containing 4 1/2 grains of ethyl iodobrassidate (41% iodine) which may be somewhat on the order of the Atomidine if that should be unavailable - in which case would this question be in order during my Reading? Also the one about the calcium, please. I do not at present know of any doctor who would cooperate with the Reading, but have some sources of information on minerals, diets, etc., which might help me to work it out. Rest assured, I will do my best.

I am not sending a check this time because I am waiting to see if I may become an Active Member, but I definitely want a Reading, so please put me on the list at once and check will follow in next letter. I very much wish to have the published research material available to Active Members & would be so happy to take part in the work. I would like to introduce it here, and already have told a few & promise to loan my copy of “There Is A River”. I might be able to do other things also. I think I outlined my attitude in my first letter. However, if I am not accepted as an Active Member, I will join as an Associate for I am sincerely interested. I might add that I am sending for “A Search for God”.

I still believe that you can help me, Mr. Cayce, and will hold to the prayer that you suggest - But I repeat, if there were no physical help for me, I would still be thankful and glad to work with you in the Association. M. J. McC.’s case is vey wonderful. Of course, she was young. I am middle-aged and have had this condition for years & years. However, all things ARE possible with God. I do not use the typewriter very much any more, - two finger style now, - and trust that this scrawl will not offer too many difficulties to those who must decipher it. It is not easy to write this way either.

I shall eagerly await futher word from you and the promised sample publications and Active Membership Blank. I will send check upon receipt.

4. Is the prescription capsule, that I am taking at night for pain, harmful?

6. Why do I have gas pains around heart when attempting to limit my food intake? Is my heart okay?
7. Is there any way I can safely reduce my weight?
8. What causes intolerable burning and itching of feet which seems to come in cycles? How relieve it?
9. What was the source of the great benefit received from the endocrine treatment taken in 1922, and how can I again tap that source?
10. Would the Gold Salts treatment benefit me?
11. Are my sources of information reliable, in the study I have made of food minerals; if not, please recommend one. In other words, please give suggestions for correct diet.
12. Would you recommend the organic minerals sold by Mrs. Perry in California and commonly known as “cell-salts”?
13. Are the psychic healing treatments I am now receiving from “the other side” bringing me benefit? Should they be continued or discontinued during the following of your instructions?
14. Can I help through suggestion to subconscious mind in sleep; if so, how?
15. Please give helpful suggestions to me along the line of spiritual self-healing culture?

B4. 8/20/43 [3174]‘s letter to EC:

Dear Mr. Cayce -

Just a line to assure you there has been no change in my plans. I will be in my room at the above address between 10:30 and 11:30 A.M. on Tuesday, August 24th.

One question to add to those already submitted concerns what may be done to save the use of my left leg, which is rapidly becoming weaker, more painful and less able to hold me up, even with my crutches. This is my most immediate need, - my most urgent one at the present moment. Please ask if there is anything that can be done for THAT SPECIAL NEED, aside from whatever general treatment is prescribed.

Be assured that I shall be praying for success, both on your part, and mine as well. And I believe we shall have it. In the meantime, my heart-felt thanks & the blessings of God to you & your work.
