This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 24th day of August, 1943, in accordance with request made by the self - Mrs. [3177], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by Claude Bragdon.

1. GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering questions, as I ask them:

2. EC: Yes, she has changed [her address?] - yes, we have the body here.

3. These conditions we find are the results of what might be truly termed the “wearing down” of various centers of the body, without the abilities to replenish same through rest periods or activities of the body. For, being partly an infectious force, experiences and activities arise in which the entity finds it necessary for an outlet for the mental self, as well as the physical body.

4. These changes that have been wrought have at times taken a great deal of strength and at others have contributed to the welfare of the entity, as to keep it walking in the better way.

5. These as we find, unless checked, will gradually grow more serious.

6. The greater benefits may be had, we find, from the use of electrical forces as might be active through the hand and foot. Thus the Dry Cell Appliance, and prepare so that either or both cells [selves?] - that is, the personal self as well as the physical - may take advantage of those vibrations this creates.

7. For this particular body, do not administer minerals or salts or tonics just in the beginning.

8. But rather those things that make for a balance, as to keep benefits for the general physical forces of the body.

9. Take the vibrations of the appliance in the feet, rather than in the hands. For, these need better stimulation. Place the attachments on glass and put the feet on same, you see, so that the vibrations may come through the limbs. Use this only about five minutes each day. Be sure the feet are dry when placing them on the appliance.

10. These with massage and the general treatments of that nature are the better for the body.

11. Keep very close to the diet, the rest periods, and the general activity of the body; and its full or complete exercise that it may attain to a greater interpretation of the needs of the body in self.

12. This is the only way in which these applications, when the body takes self in hand, may add to the strength and the vitality.

14. (Q) Is there a machine already prepared, or should this Dry Cell Appliance be made for her? (A) We haven’t one here but one can be made easily enough.

15. (Q) Will I ever be able to regain any sort of health, or must I always be ill? (Germ diseases, mostly, and an operation, from which I have not recovered very well, too much weight to carry and a weak muscle in my heart). (A) This will aid the body, if the attitude of mind is kept so that there is the walking in the correct ways.

16. (Q) What is the karma which follows me? (A) This - find it in self. Know, so long as we feel there is karma, it is cause and effect. But in righteousness we may be justified before the Throne; thus we may pass from cause and effect, or karma, to that of grace.

This is the attitude; not of self-righteousness no, but of blessed assurance that He is able to take all that we may commit unto Him against any experience in our lives.

17. (Q) Should I return to N.Y. for Ouspensky’s work, or must I have all up and regain my strength first? (A) Regain health first.

18. (Q) Any spiritual advice? (A) Look to Him, who is the way and the truth and the light. Read very carefully, and apply to self, the 30th of Deuteronomy, and the 14th, 15th, 16th, 17th of John. Not merely as something beautiful to interpret, but as being spoken to self. These will aid in gaining that spiritual equilibrium necessary for the other forces to be of any help to the body.

My dear Mr. Cayce:-

I read the book “There Is A River” that was my reason for writing to you at all.

I spoke to Mr. Bragdon first. He told me he had heard you speak etc. I sent for “A Search For God” and received the enclosure of his. I could obtain a reading you gave me 15 minutes some time ago (I obtained the battery as directed). It has done some good to my swollen ankles but I began to have a pain in my spine. My Dr. calls it rheumatism of the spine. I doubt that - rather do I think (as per reading) it is due to depleted centers and shock (sudden deaths, elopement of my daughter etc.) One of the recent Bulletins CALLS SICKNESS SIN.

I believe I wrote you that I had an invalid mother, whose care came on me when I was 15. I married to please her 3 weeks before her death. After 7 years of care of her (The man proved to be a drunk and after 13 1/2 yrs. I divorced him) taking with me my invalid child of 9 and a baby 2 1/2 yrs. My own health broken for good, great responsibility followed. Now the invalid died at 28

• (That is 15 years ago). The other child has caused me quite some sorrow. All this - I know is of no interest to you. To me, yes. Why am I ill? If you will give me a life reading I might solve THAT problem.

Dear Mrs. [3177]

Thank you for yours of the seventh. Am sorry that we did not give you an appointment for your life reading before this, for as you may know, our appointments have gotten very, very far in advance. I can appreciate very much your anxieties and don’t think for a moment that it does not mean anything to me, for the more I have tried to be of help to others throughout the years, the closer the anxieties of others have and do come for me. Am making the appointment for the life reading for yourself on the afternoon of February 11, 3:30 to 4:30 EWT. This is crowding it in, to be sure, but I do hope that we may indeed be the means of a real service.

Be sure to let us have the questions that you would like to have asked at the time of the reading. Do keep up the suggestions that have been made for your physical improvement. I feel it will bring results.

R3. 12/18/43 Letter verifying appointment for Life Rdg:

“You have directed me to use the dry cell battery which I have done, as directed. I have some results - ankles less swollen and movement of legs stronger… I am sure a Life Reading will solve my problem of why this life has been paid for in suffering and illness - just why I had to pay that price here is what I want to know, so that I may ‘remember to remember’ when I leave here (this world).”

Dear Mrs. [3117]

I have your letter of the 20th.

I believe I have been given a check, or signed a check to return your membership, but I understand from this, that it is not in keeping with your wishes. I suppose, Mrs. [3177], that all of us do get “touchy” at times, and it is usually when we are wrong ourselves. I am mighty sorry that my illness has disappointed so many people and you among them.

I think from the correspondence we have had from time to time, I can and do appreciate your interest in things psychic, and I have hoped that I might in small measure, be the means of a service.

Yes, I realize and recognize the fact that there have been many, many teachers who are much more capable of contributing to the thought and study of individuals than I; that it is possibly to some small measure, at least, been given to me to be the channel of instructions or directions, as evidenced by the great number who again and again request information through these channels. I understand such teachers as Krishnamurti, Ouspensky, are much further advanced in many ways than I, and that a student of theirs should come to me, I would consider it an honor.

If you would like for me to make an appointment for your Life Reading, I assure you I will be very glad to try and undertake it. It may be many months before I can get to it, but if you will let me know I will give you an appointment, and don’t you send the money to me until a few days before the time of the appointment.

I am in hopes I have gradually regained sufficient health and strength now to carry on and I hope I will not overdo it, nor try to take so many readings as to cut anyone’s shorter than that which will be of the greatest help. There are such a great number and I am so desirous of trying to help all of them, if possible. Not that it is of myself, for I realize of myself I can do nothing, but 99% of the people I try to help indicate that they do get real help, and of this I can only give thanks and say to them, “Give the praise to Him from whom all good things come, and not to me.” I regret there has been such a great delay, but I hope any damage that has been done will not be so severe as to be of harm to anyone.

Dear Mr. Cayce:-

Thank you, for your very gracious letter of the 23rd. I was, as you say, “I was upset” - (not with you - I would not have a Life Reading if you are not well) but rather with the letter I received from Gladys Davis. It was presumptive of her to tell me “that it was my ‘Fate’ or I was not ready.”

I was born Dec. 25 under Capricorn & Saturn ruling the planets - of purification not an easy life for one who tries for the spiritual life. My life has been difficult, but as I felt, due perhaps to some (re)incarnation, for which I have PAID DEARLY. Among my first questions “What is my Karma” I received not the reply I wished for. If you have in your library “Steiner’s books” you may feel he is some what like you.

As for a future reading, YES, but not as in the past. I can’t stand the waiting - change the date - waiting again

I have your letter of March 25th.

I am mighty sorry that things have come about that have kept disappointing you with your contacts with this work here, and I do hope that some of these days you will have the opportunity to spend a little while at the beach and become acquainted with the work and our undertaking.

I understand that we haven’t the whole thing, but we are contributing what has proved through the years to be of help to hundreds and hundreds of people, and which is continuing to be of help, if we are to judge from the reports that people send us almost every day. I believe the results in people’s lives is the best proof of what a work is.

Yes, we have disappointed one hundred or more, we have to admit, that is possibly the weakness of the flesh and not in the information we are able to obtain, for we realize very much, it is not ourselves, but it is only as the Spirit of Truth may work in and through us as a channel, and we can only be that as the Spirit that we entertain prompts us to be.

Hoping that we may yet be the means of a help to you, and may His blessings ever attend you, I remain

“I am thinking of a trip to Virginia Beach, as I have had pneumonia.

“I had some correspondence with your father years ago.

“Would you be kind enough to recommend some hotel (not too expensive). I have to bring a nurse with me.

“I wonder if you are doing any of your father’s work.

“Thank you.”

R9. 1/7/54 Daughter’s letter:

My dear Mr. Cayce:-

I am forwarding Mrs. [3177]‘s letter to you, but wish to explain her condition. She is at present in a nursing home and in no condition to either be in a Hotel or to travel. She is seventy-eight years old, and has been ill and in nursing homes for the past six years. Right now she can not walk across the room unaided. She, however, is very active mentally, and feels she can do more than she is physically able to do.

The reason for my letter is that she will expect a reply from you, and I thought that maybe you could discourage her by simply saying that there was nothing available at this time, or that you are not having classes, or whatever you think best! I trust that you understand my position, I do not want her to feel thwarted, or to lose her interest in her readings - but it would be total suicide for her to move, even if she were able to do so.

The doctor in charge of the nursing home (at the address Mrs. […] gave you her letter) is Dr. Theodore Neumann, in case you should care to write him about Mrs. […]. Even if she could get there at some future date, I should hate to have you assume the responsibility of her, as she knows no-one there.

Please DO NOT mention having heard from me as she would never forgive me, as you can well understand!!

I have received “Edgar Cayce - His Life and Work”. I have read “There Is A River” which contains some of this information. I have talked with Mr. Claude Bragdon, about Mr. Cayce and he wishes [?] for him. Just now I am a pupil of Ouspensky.

I cannot find in this booklet - whether or not Mr. Cayce can or does give readings, AT A DISTANCE. As a child of six, I was an angel and seemed to be on my way toward spiritual work. My Mother called me “queer” and punished me for it. Since then I’ve grown to be careful that no one find me out. In fact I feared (from advice) to continue spiritual work, except in secret. From this you may gather that my motives are pure. For years I have been a semi-invalid - Drs. called it nerves, I call it a sick psyche. Crucifixion, I’ve had plenty.

As I wrote Mr. Cayce I feel it may be my Karma. So, I’m interested in my past lives WITHOUT FEAR OF SINNING, - Also, why I am so sensitive too very much and seem always ill.

I will gladly send $20.00 as soon as I hear from you about my request.

I have received your reply to my letter, suggesting I send for your book - “A Search For God”. I have done so, it has not come yet. I do not understand WHY I should search for God, when He is as near to me as my earthly parents. As a child I told my Mother I knew Jesus and when I was proud of my new red shoes I asked her “Will Jesus love me if I am proud?” I lived to please Him. What I want to know IS in what way I have failed God - that’s all. I have spent a life trying to serve God. Yet, I have suffered terribly. What is the answer? My Karma? - That’s all I wish to know. Thank you.

My dear Mr. Cayce:-

You are perfectly right - I should not suffer if I know God is so near. I have enjoyed the book more than I can say. And am leaving it to others.

My sufferings have been these, a sick (invalid) child for 28 years (from childhood). I lost her yet, I saved her for 28 years. Drs. said she would die at 3 months. Caring for her, I lost my own health for 15 years I have had one dreadful illness after another - mostly germ diseases, pneumonia etc. and am just recovering from an operation - Or am I? I am 68 years old. Time and time again He (God) has seen me through the valley of the shadow of death. Drs. give me up and when I recover they say “It is her thinking” - Since my search for God has been intense for over 40 years - I can but feel it is my Karma.

Just now I am in a group with Ouspensky. I also know Claude Bragdon. Oct. seems pretty far away, as I am troubled about my next move, also because I have a very sick child. I would be grateful for a reading whether or not it proves helpful, it might. My references are with this hotel. I am not sure my Dr. would approve of this step, so, I’m not asking him.

Who am I?

P.S. Will you pardon my writing more? I believe I should have said, I seek to KNOW God’s will - rather than, I know He is near. I was not always a good human child nor have I always been a good child of God. Human weakness that we all have - ?

I have a grandchild, who seems exactly like my daughter I lost - I wonder - Just now I have a great fear of more illness. Since my operation I have gained 50 lbs. and am very weak - I am always happy - some how - no matter what happens. Rather free from any FEAR OF DEATH.

I am indeed sorry that you have become exhausted - Sorry, too, that I may be causing you extra exertions - However, for me, it is just as well as my questions have changed somewhat. Please remember I CAN TAKE any thing you tell me. I have NO fear of death nor do I fear criticism no matter how hard they are. I have wished intensely for over 15 years spreading “Light” and at last reached Mr. Ouspensky. Due to ill health I have come here to regain strength enough to return to some kind of functioning?
