[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. (Notes read to and transcribed by Jeanette Fitch.)]
Born December 9, 1916, in New Haven, Conn. Air Corps. Sec., Time of Reading A.P.O. …, Set. bet. 11:00 to 12:10 Noon % Postmaster, Taken 3:50 to 4:20 P. M. Eastern War Time. San Fran., Ca.

GC: You will give the relations of this entity and the universe, and the universal forces; giving the conditions which are as personalities, latent and exhibited in the present life; also the former appearances in the earth plane; giving time, place and the name, and that in each life which built or retarded the development for the entity; giving the abilities of the present entity, that to which it may attain, and how:
-
EC: (In going back over years from the present - ” - ‘40 - changes - ‘34 - preparations - ” etc., on back to birth date.)
-
Yes, we are given the records here of that entity now known as or called [3198].
-
In giving the interpretations of the records, as we find there are many urges to be chosen from; and quite a varied interpretation might be made. But these we choose with the desire and purpose that this information may be a helpful experience for the entity; enabling the entity to better fulfil those purposes for which it entered this material sojourn.
-
As the entity finds, these are evidenced in the personality of the entity, and may be called the composite as the entity finds, these are evidences in the personality of the entity - and may be called the composite picture of the entity’s experiences as might be correlated with experiences of the mental self in other phases of consciousness than material manifestations.
-
Thus as we find, these are evidenced: One that becomes very moody at times; easily discouraged at times; finds excuses by condemnation of self. These eliminated from the consciousness, and things or conditions substituted tending towards successes, would make quite a variation in the reactions of the entity.
-
Thus the entity should learn and know that the destiny of self, is ever tied up in choices made within the mental self. This may not always be easy, yet as the entity analyzes self it is really with the self that all of these changes - as may be considered of present and of post periods - would in their activities indicate a much better outlook than might be judged by just the manner the entity feels or even expresses itself at the time.
-
This, then, makes for an entity that is lovable. And if you would be lovely in yourself, make friends and use the efforts of the body towards those fulfillments of that which continually rises to be a part of the entity’s experience. Thus the entity will soon find that any field of endeavor in which the entity may attempt activity will become much easier. Thus the applications of self to the business activities will find a much clearer, a much more perfect understanding. Know deep within self whatever may be the experience, that there is the opportunity to use same for a more perfect understanding of man’s relationship to fellow man, man’s relationship to the Maker.
-
These are natural consequences, and yet these are exercised, in the experience of the entity; thus bringing for the entity many abilities lacking with most not patterned after this particular phase of the entity’s experience.
-
One that will find refuge ever in the application of self in its relationship to other individuals, though they may be of quite a different social strata, though they may appear to be interested in facts or figures, or history or the mathematics as to an individual proposition. Yet if the entity will analyze its purpose, its hope, then we will find great changes coming about in the outlook the entity has upon this earth’s plane.
-
Astrologically, we find Mercury and Jupiter, Mars and Saturn, as parts of the experience of the entity. Thus one with a high mental ability but easily becoming discouraged, even at times feeling that self might be unbalanced in mind. But keep such thoughts away from the entity. For, in Mercury and Jupiter there will come great changes of status in its association and dealings with others. Keeping the faith, applying same in daily relationships, will bring for the entity greater opportunities. For, remember, He has promised, “I will stand at the door and knock, whosoever opens I will enter and abide with Him.” What is the reference here? Spiritualizing purposes, spiritualizing ideals; knowing and deciding in self what is the direction you would take, opportunities in these varied fields of endeavor will open up before the entity - and thus bring about a harmonious expression of the spiritual forces latent and manifested in the entity’s experience.
-
We find that there should be the proper consideration of the health of this body, and the continuing to keep and build the activities and the aura influence about same as not to become stumbling blocks or weights upon thee, because of some minor infraction that once occurred in the experience of the entity.
-
As to the activities related to the appearances in the earth, - all are not indicated, yet these we find as a part of the entity’s experience.
-
Before this the entity was in the land of the present nativity, during the construction days following the American Revolution, when the activities of the entity brought peace and harmony to many.
-
The entity may do this in the present if self is given to the terminology of giving activities to others in the measures as desired for self.
-
Then in the name Lawrence Avery, the entity acted in the capacity of a helper to datasticians, statisticians, as well as in making known the varied characters of messages sent from one body of the army to another. But later in the developing period the entity found and applied self in a produce mercantile business, as would be called today.
-
Hence those things pertaining to livestock, to hides, to foods partially, are rather as an inhibition to the entity at times.
-
Using same, then, as a guide, or using opportunities as such, study to show thyself approved unto the promises made by Creative Forces to thee. Thus is experiences in the application of the ideology, know that He is in His temple and that the body “thyself” is thy temple, insofar as you - as an individual - are concerned. Not that you shouldn’t contribute to others, but it will be taken care of in the individual case.
-
Before that the entity was in the English land when there were those that expressed themselves in the desire to become a material defense for a cause, a purpose, and an ideal.
-
These activities started well. In the end they brought disturbances to the body, owing to conditions that surrounded the activity in the capacities of bringing about warnings - as under the head of ordinance.
-
Thus may the entity in some period of its life engage in those activities in which the customers will be in a place of refuge of rest. Hence in these capacities the entity may find self bringing about greater promise in many ways for the body-mind of the entity.
-
The name then was Alexander Attellu, of a family considered one of the first in that particular land through those periods.
-
Before that the entity was in the Promised Land when there were persecutions of those so close in the church, because of the animosity stirred up among the natives of the land.
-
The entity was among those who partially accepted the teachings of the Master and lived them until hardships were presented. And with the thought of losing self’s life the entity journeyed far afield.
-
Yet the abilities to direct, as in an executive position, though in a mercantile activity or of such nature, are those in which the entity may find an outlet and bring to self - and others that may be dependent upon same the greater material blessings.
-
So in thy application in the present, keep those spiritual forces that prompt thee in thy daily contact with thy fellow man.
-
For, He has given “Who is my mother, my brother, my sister? They that do the will of the Father.” May the entity then ever have as its prayer:
-
HERE AM I, LORD! USE ME IN THAT CAPACITY IN WHICH THE WORLD MAY KNOW OF THEE IN A GREATER, AND IN A BETTER LIGHT OR APPLICATION.
-
The entity in that experience showed fear, until this became as a part of its own banishment. However, the entity gained throughout, and if much of that which has been given is applied in the light of “I AM MY BROTHER’S KEEPER” these should be a part of the entity’s experience, as it bespeaks of itself and its life so that others may take warning and follow closely therein.
-
In the first portions of the experience the name was Escher. In the latter portion while in banishment the entity was known as Elbedhar.
-
Before that the entity was in the Egyptian land during those periods when there were the preparations for many to go into foreign lands as emissaries.
-
Thus we still find portions of languages easily applied, when there is the constant use or the practical application of same. In the experiences the entity gained, for that activity of the entity that brought about the greater helpful forces to others added to the abilities as may be manifested in the present.
-
Changes must come in the spiritual, the physical, the economic conditions of the earth, but study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman not ashamed, rightly dividing the words of truth and keeping self unspotted from condemnation. This is the greater fault in the entity - condemning self along with others.
-
Remember the prayer “Forgive, even as I forgive.” For, these should and must be the parts of the entity’s life, and these applied - when the active influence throughout the life may appear to be of a questionable nature - know that His truth, His hope abideth forever.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Is there any other advice that may be of help at this time, concerning his surroundings, conditions and circumstances? (A) As indicated, don’t pass too quick judgements on others, nor on self especially. For, any faults lie within thyself. For, know - as has ever been and will ever be - like begets like.
Put away those periods of moodiness. Put away those periods of questionings even of self’s sanity or self’s judgement. Know that it is within thee as to whether ye use the opportunity granted thee as His child. Thus, through the spiritual forces, we are heirs, - yea, joint heirs - with those activities that bring about Creative Forces in the hearts and minds of those that seek His face.
- We are through for the present.

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 9/23/43 Mr. [3198]‘s ltr. to EC:
Hawaii
Dear Mr. Cayce,
I received the Life reading [3198-1] yesterday afternoon. Upon studying it last night, I was able to interpret all but several points and to understand the reading. However, I did experience some difficulty in this due to the, at times, complicated sentence structure. One other factor contributed to this difficulty - connections between sentences and paragraphs were indefinite because of the use of demonstrative pronouns like “these” and “this”, without definite referent being specified. I mention this only because many of your members who have received readings may have had similar difficulty, with the intention of being helpful.
My faith in you has increased since receiving the reading. And my determination to follow those warnings and instructions given will not lapse. Each of my problems was hit upon and the solution indicated.
There are certain parts which I do not understand, and I am wondering if there is any possibility of clearing them up. The following:
On page 2, 4th para. [Par. 9] - “These are natural consequences, and yet these are exercised, in the experience of the entity; thus bringing for the entity many abilities lacking with most not patterned after this particular phase of the entity’s experience.” What are the “natural consequences” referred to, and what does the rest of the paragraph mean. I have an idea, but cannot interpret it clearly.
On page 2, last paragraph [Par. 11] - what is meant by Mercury and Jupiter, Mars and Saturn being parts of the experience of the entity? What does each planetary name indicate? Particularly the sentence: “In Mercury and Jupiter there will come great changes of status in its association and dealings with others.” I don’t know even popular astrology, so this is obscure.
On page three, the paragraph [Par. 12] referring to body health, starting from “and the continuing to keep and build…” and particularly the reference to “some minor infraction that once occurred in the experience of the entity.”
On page three, 4th para. [Par. 15]: “The entity may do this in the present, if self is given to the terminology of giving activities to others in the measures as desired for self.” Could this be restated as so to be clearer? A few sentences down [Par. 17]: “Hence those things pertaining to livestock, to hides, to foods partially, are rather as an inhibition to the entity at times”. Is the meaning here that things pertaining to livestock, to hides, to foods (what foods?) tend to limit the influence of the entity on this self? It would help me in forestalling this if you could be more specific.
These are all the doubtful points. I hope you will be in a position to clear them up for me.
Thank you, Mr. Cayce, for your great help. I should like to obtain as soon as feasible in the future both the other types of readings you give, physical and mental-spiritual. Starting with November I shall forward the fees of
20. per reading in installments of10. over a period of four months.R2. 10/7/43 EC’s ltr. to Mr. [3198]:
Dear Sgt. [3198]
Replying to yours of the 23rd, I believe you will, as practically everyone else, gradually grow to understand what the information is trying to say to you. If you read the data over and then analyze it in your own life.
I hope we can clarify some of the things you ask about.
On page 2, last paragraph [Par. 9], “natural consequences” I think refers to things you have already done through experience in the earth, including this present life, or the law of cause and effect, or spoken of as pertaining to former experiences, karmic influences.
Page 2, last paragraph [Par. 11], the information here, that is the reading, does not approach astrology from the same angle as some astrologers do. Mercury, used as a term to indicate the consciousness of an entity through some period of the experience, just as your earthly experience would be in a three dimensional consciousness, then Mercurian would be in some other dimensions, and that you were conscious in that environment, not necessarily that you had a physical body, as you have in the earth, but a body in the same sense as your mind is body, your soul or spirit is body, being body of the dimension in which you find self. The same applies to Jupiter or any of the rest of them.
Now, Mercury is called the mind and it usually speaks of the high mental ability, the ability of an individual to reason. Jupiter is benevolence, universal. What you appear to make you a good soldier, or good at any group you may belong to.
On Page 3, paragraph 4 [Par. 15], “as you do to others, you are doing to yourself.” As you would that others would do to you, do so to them, is just another terminology of the same thing.
A few sentences down [Par. 17], evidently you had to do with things pertaining to livestock, hides, foods. Yet some of these things are as inhibitions. I think if you will study these in the light of this, you will get just what the information means to say. It is put in a funny terminology.
I am sending you the life reading data also. I don’t know whether you would wish it first or not. This may come slow, though I am sending it air mail.
We are making the appointments for your physical reading for the afternoon of September 28, 3:30 to 4:30 EWT.
Thanking you, and with every good wish, I am
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce [EC/vw]

Association for Research & Enlightenment, Inc. Virginia Beach, Virginia
Dear Mr. Cayce,
For some time now I have been puzzled as to how your organization functions in such matters as the answering of correspondence - and the setting of appointments for readings.
On the matter of correspondence, for example, I have always addressed my letters to Mr. Edgar Cayce. Have received prompt replies from Mr. Cayce, for which my thanks. The thing is, that queries I have made are not answered. This may be because it was not in Mr. Cayce’s province to answer them, and that those connected with the actual administration of the organization did not see the letters. In matters pertaining to your publications of the Association, for example, and certain inquiries I have made (please refer to my previous correspondence), my interest is yet unappeased. I received most of those listed in your little two-leafed pamphlet, and have to date received one bulletin. Those I have received have been of great value to me - particularly that on Meditation, that on Life Readings and the one titled “Oneness of All Force”
- the latter, especially. I notice, too, reference in the back of this one to other publications of the Association, of which I had not been informed. If you refer to my previous letters you will see that my interest in the occult is no light matter with me - and my interest in developing myself spiritually, studying to show myself approved of the Creative Forces is vital and real. It is to you I look for the greatest assistance. Again please refer to my previous correspondence.
Another matter is the following. I have wished to become an Active Member of your organization, and have expressed this wish a number of times - yet no information has been forthcoming. I should like to know if this is possible - if so, what procedure is to be followed in applying for and qualifying as an Active Member?
The last matter is this: for some reason confusions have occurred in the setting of dates for readings, not only with myself but with two of my friends here - at least so it seems to outward glance. With me, one letter set a date for October 28, when the letter was dated November. A subsequent letter set a date for the mental-spiritual reading for Feb. 12 (I believe) - then I received another letter just recently which set date for physical reading for January 20 and mental-spiritual for January 21. The first date was obviously an error. The second was all right, but changed with-out explanation, though entirely agreeable, and no reference made to the previous appointments at all, and it is this latter fact that is, to say the least, disconcerting.
Those are the three matters I should like to have clarified, if you will be so kind.
I have already benefitted greatly by the one reading, Life Reading [3198-1] given on Sept. 5 - and am looking forward to receiving the other two readings on the dates set. In this latter connection, am I to receive these readings at the Hotel in Honolulu? or will I be contactable here at this APO number? Please send me definite word on this point as soon as possible.
Thank you for the help you have given me to date - and for all you will give. Please permit me to give my assistance to the Association in any and every way I can, won’t you?
Sincerely, [3198]

R6. 1/22/46 First part of letter referred to his previous visit to A.R.E. with his friend, Mr. [3245]:
In my reading, Mr. Cayce mentioned that an executive position in a merchandising activity would give expression to the creative forces within me. At least, this was the merest hint and the only concrete one, pertaining to a possible career for me. Being born in this society at this time, I must, I should think, use the opportunities, at the same time keeping the faith, as Mr. Cayce has often admonished. It is my sincere intention to do the latter. Certain of the problems which were as a hindrance to me, specifically, emotional ones, are being resolved now - and I expect, as Mr. Cayce predicted, that the various activities in which I am interested, among which are business ventures, should come more easily to me now, that is, more spontaneously, since heretofore interest in such matters was lacking.
In the above connection, I wish to broach upon the matter of the possible manufacture of certain compounds recommended by Mr. Cayce for various ailments. It seems to me, that would be one certain way of doing good with the knowledge obtained through Mr. Cayce, by dissemination and marketing not only if informative guidance, but at the same time of the material remedies advised by Mr. Cayce. This is one venture in which I am seriously and deeply interested. Are any of the remedies gleaned in the readings patented yet? If not, May I take the liberty of patenting those which are marketable? This may, to you, seem too commercial a viewpoint and approach to take - but serious thought on my part would point to its necessity. For the reason that a small company, without having its products patented, would not be in a position to compete with large and established companies which would be only too eager to take over unpatented formulas of such efficacy as those produced in the readings. Not only would this defeat the venture, as a personal interest to me and an interest vital to the Association, as might be, but large companies are often too wont to adulterate their products for profit’s sake. I should very much to hear from you, in this connection. A fair percentage of the profits would be allotted, naturally, to the Association, for the advancement of its work; would even make it feasible to start up the hospital again. It would be my intention, also, once the business were financially solvent and on its way, to make this a cooperative enterprise, rather than a purely capitalistic one. I hope you will be assured of the sincerity of my motives in this matter. It would not only give me a work to do, beneficial to me spiritually as well as materially, but would do good to all concerned, The Assn., the workers, and the buyers of the products.
May I extend my sincere regards to all of you down there, best wishes for the continuing success of your work. It is our hope to see you all again in several months.
Sincerely, [3198]

Dear Mr. [3198]
Your letters of January 22, and February 1, to Miss Davis have been turned over to me.
Considering first your letter of January 22, may I make some suggestions which can possibly be of help to you? Harold Bisey of 1124 St. John’s Pl., Brooklyn, N.Y., handles Atomidine. His father developed and perfected the formulae for this product. The readings have consistently recommended it for years. We would appreciate it very much if you will get in touch with him and secure, if possible, a supply of this product. Orders have gone up to him without reply. At the same time you might well consider the possibility of making a connection with his efforts to distribute this product. The Association would be interested and helpful.
It would be necessary for us to discuss the marketing of any products described in the readings. This matter is much too complicated to attempt an explanation here. We are interested in getting these products on the market and you may be the man who can do it, but this matter will require careful clarification. If I am in New York before you come down this way, I will get in touch with you.
The Association has purchased my father and mother’s home as a guest house and headquarters for the organization. You probably know something about the crowded conditions in Virginia Beach, so be sure to advise us well ahead of time when you intend coming down, so that we can in turn tell you just what the situation here is. The picture changes rapidly.
At the present time we do not have room which could be allotted for your brother here in the house. We are faced with the problem of not using too many of the rooms for those working in the office, since members of the Association wish to use the space. However, it might be wise to have your brother write me regarding his interests and qualifications in connection with office work. As we expand our operations something might open up.
Miss Davis has told me of your visit here and I am glad that you have found the life readings interesting. It will be a pleasure to discuss them with you and your friend. Will you give us at this time a report on your readings, indicating how accurate they were in analyzing your characteristics and specifically how they have helped you.
I will look forward to hearing from you again.
Sincerely yours, [signed] Hugh Lynn Cayce
R9. 2/17/46 Mr. [3198]‘s ltr. to HLC:
Mr. Hugh Lynn Cayce, Association for Research & Enlightenment. Virginia Beach, Virginia
Dear Mr. Cayce:
I am in receipt of your kind letter of February 6.
I have contacted Mr. Reginald Bisey, of 1324 St. John’s Place, Brooklyn, New York, in accordance with your suggestion. As a result of our conversation, I am beginning to make arrangements for the incorporation of a new drug manufacturing and distributing company. Mr. Bisey has provisionally agreed to place the production and distribution of Atomidine in the hands of this corporation. The plan is to have this corporation manufacture and distribute solely those drugs recommended by your father; that is, with your agreement and participation.
Since I should like to have a clear status in this matter, perhaps we can clarify the difficulties through correspondence, which difficulties were hinted at in the third paragraph of your letter [Par. R8 above]. As I see it, there are certain things which must be guarded against. Compounds recommended by Mr. Cayce were often intended to be employed under specific bodily conditions, and might perhaps not be effective under changed conditions. Second, the main thesis of Mr. Cayce’s recommendations was the unity of the organism and the necessity for treating body, mind and spirit; the necessity, also, for restoring the body to balance by more than one means, which might be a specific compound. These circumstances would call for literature to be included in each package of a compound, to clarify the total picture of the treatment of the particular illness. These circumstances would also call for proper advertising.
Since I cannot be expected to be in your locality very soon, and since such may be the situation with you, perhaps the above paragraph will serve to instigate the necessary correspondence to clarify the difficulties. I am in process of obtaining information for all aspects of the matter: patents, incorporation, various federal and state statutes which must be complied with, etc.
Pertaining to my brother, he has not sufficient motivation to write. It is quite a complex developmental situation, and I guess I should not even have mentioned it to you.
He is a good typist, a writer, clerk, etc. and would creditably acquit himself. However, let us leave that as it is for now.
As for the readings: I was greatly impressed with all of them. The physical reading was accurate in every detail, and naturally the clearest of all. I have followed his instructions with good results. There are still a few points in both the mental-spiritual and the life readings, which Miss Davis could not really clarify for me, though she was of help. These points are probably minor, since the readings have all been of great assistance.
The 5th par., pg. 2 [Par. 9] of the Life Reading, beginning: “These are…”, are not clear.
In the next par. [Page 10] “will find refuge…”: how does Mr. Cayce use the word “refuge”?
In the next par. [Par. 11] there is no Venus indicated astrologically. What does this signify? And what does the sentence mean: “In Mercury and Jupiter there will come great changes of status in its association and dealings with others.”
Par. 7, pg. 3 [Par. 17], beginning: “Hence those things pertaining…”. What does this refer to? I am not at all certain.
Par. 6, pg. 4 [Par. 25]: “Yet the abilities to…” This might be well be applicable to my present venture, might it not?
Par. 9, pg. 4 [Par. 29], beginning: “The entity in that experience…”. What does the last part of it refer to?
Mr. Cayce’s analysis of my characteristics in this reading was accurate to the minute degree.
The M-S reading [3198-3] was not difficult to understand, and I have no questions on it. It was decidedly accurate and helpful.
Mr. [3245] found his Life Reading to be equally accurate, and has finally come around to following out the lead given, on his career. He is making arrangements to go [to] an aeronautical school, for designing, etc., as indicated in the reading.
I informed Mr. Bisey of your need for Atomidine. There has been some trouble in the production of it, and he had been short of it for some months. However, he promised he would send a carton to you C.O.D. very soon. I hope this is satisfactory.
I shall shortly begin to sell atomidine, while making further preparations in accordance with the plans as outlined.
I am looking forward to hearing from you soon. Note the change of address, and the phone number by which I may be reached is …
Very truly yours, [3198]

Mr. Hugh Lynn Cayce Association for Research and Enlightenment, Inc. Arctic Circle, Virginia Beach, Virginia
Dear Mr. Cayce:
I recently received a letter from one Mr. A. M. Godfrey of Lafayette Boulevard, Norfolk, Virginia, requesting me to fill an order for three dozen bottles of Atomidine. His first words are: “Hugh Lynn Cayce informs me that you are now in charge of the Atomidine.” If his statement reflects truly your understanding of the situation, then I am called upon to clarify the situation.
If you will remember rightly, some time ago I wrote you on a number of matters, but particularly with reference to the possibility of organizing a Drug Manufacturing Company to be called the Cayce Remedies Corporation. I indicated that I had contacted Mr. Bisey and was discussing the possibility of manufacturing Atomidine as a lead-off product. (By the way has your order for Atomidine been filled by Mr. Bisey?) In reply I received a short letter to the effect that you were going on vacation, and would answer my communication in detail upon your return. I induce from the fact of Mr. [3245] receiving word from you, that you are now back from vacation, and am, therefore, awaiting word from you.
I may state that the expected financial backing has not as yet materialized, and that a drastic revision of the plans may become necessary. When I hear from you, I shall elucidate further.
I trust you had an enjoyable vacation.
Sincerely yours, [3198]
R11. 4/16/46 HLC’s ltr. to Mr. [3198]:
Mr. [3198] …, N.Y.
Dear Mr. [3198]
I have just moved the margin releases over so that this letter would go on half a dozen pages instead of twelve.
First - let’s consider the Atomidine situation. My information given to Marsden Godfrey regarding your handling of this product was based on a paragraph in your letter of 17 February, “I shall shortly begin to sell Atomidine, while making further preparations in accordance with the plans as outlined.” I felt that while we were discussing the other matters it would be a cooperative move to send our orders through you. Incidentally, we have not received Atomidine from Bisey. Some definite information on this matter would be appreciated - and some Atomidine (to Godfrey) would be appreciated even more.
Your Life Reading is in front of me. Taking your questions in the order as given, my interpretation of the quotations follows:
5th Par., pg. 2 [Par. 9] - beg. “These are…etc.” This reference is to the preceding paragraph where certain mental and spiritual laws are stated - Like attracts like - every experience an opportunity, etc. The 5th par. indicates that the action of such laws is natural, but also that you have consciously exercised your will in applying them in your experience, thus improving yourself. Apparently this did not apply in the experience at the time the reading was given, refers to the war period, I expect.
In par. 6 [Par. 10], “refuge” is used in the sense of the greatest strength, protection, power.
In par. 7 [Par. 11], the planets mentioned refer, as you know, to planes of consciousness through which the soul passes between incarnations on the earth plane. The four mentioned are associated with the four appearances. These are in reverse order - The failure to mention Venus simply indicates that you did not pass through that plane between or rather before entry into the earth plane for any of the incarnations mentioned. The combination of Mercury and Jupiter combines mental ability with the broad scope of Jupiter’s influence, bring associations with large numbers of people in some type of activity or service. The abilities or urges from the experiences in these two planes are important in any work dealing with people - in fact a person confined to one job, or routine, would not have back of them such experiences or development. For example a combination of Venus and Jupiter or Mercury might be the background for an artist or actor. The combination of Mercury and Jupiter is more concerned with service, ideas, ideals.
Par. 7, page 3 [Par. 17], describes the urge coming from the experiences in the early American incarnation. Evidently you were in a produce mercantile business in the latter part of the experience. Just how do you feel about livestock, hides. and some foods? Have you ever had any special periods of repulsion or attraction? Whatever urge you have about such things (dig back in your experience) comes from the American period.
Par. 6, pg. 4 [Par. 25]. Certainly seems to indicate an ability in the mercantile business which might well apply to the present plans.
Par. 9, pg. 4 [Par. 29]. “The entity in that experience… etc.” This seems to have been a period of development except for the fear of the persecutions. The tortures for the early Christians were pretty horrible at times. Evidently, you ran away and finally ran into persecutions in some distant lands and overcame your fear. By applying the principles you now understand, you should be able to be an example to others.
Some of these explanations may seem worse than the reading. If so, ask some more questions.
Now with reference to a plan for handling the remedies suggested through the readings. During the period when readings were being given there was a small but constant demand for certain remedies. Those which were compounded and formulae perfected through the information still need to be manufactured and placed on the market. First, certain tests would be necessary, according to the nature of the product and then advertising, and more advertising.
Perhaps I can be clearer if I ask a few questions?
Do you have in mind a company which would manufacture, or one that would just distribute the completed product? In other words, do you contemplate having some drug concern put up the products for you, or make and package it yourself.
Several years ago, a company to manufacture IPSAB for Pyorrhea, and other products from the readings, was incorporated and stock offered for sale. The few thousand dollars put into the company carried it through the period of perfecting a commercial product for the first product. The Am. Dental Assoc. indicated that a considerable amount of money would be needed to secure the tests needed for them to consider approving it. At that time the money could not be secured. [See [1800] series.]
This does not mean that such money could not be raised, nor does it mean that a slower method of developing a product in a small locality and putting profits back into advertising would not - under good management - eventually result in a strong organization. Also, there is the possibility - a complicated one to be sure - or working with doctors individually and interesting them in taking part in the development of different products.
At the present time Marsden Godfrey is manufacturing IPSAB. That is one of the best products which came through the readings as a specific. He and others in the Association might be willing to go into a company for the development of the products.
The Association or the Foundation (the latter is concerned with indexing and extracting from the readings) should be assured of income from such a venture.
I will be glad to go into further details with you, if you will give me more specific information as to what you have in mind.
Do you want to handle the whole matter yourself?
It may be a distributing company, or manufacturing, or both?
We are desirous of getting these products to the public and we will welcome your further suggestions and some definite plans.
Sincerely yours, [signed] Hugh Lynn Cayce
R12. 5/30/46 Mr. [3198]‘s ltr. to EC:
Dear Mr. Cayce,
Have been putting off replying to your letter of April 16, until I might have more definite news to report and a more explicit plan to present. But it seems I should write of the situation as it now stands, without awaiting the development of the problematical “new developments”.
Bisey has for years been in the position of requiring the modest income from the sales of Atomidine for the support of his mother and himself. It has amounted in recent years to about $1200 per year net. Bisey works, and I believe his wife does, too. He often has long hours at his job as accountant and thus has a very limited amount of time on his hands to package Atomidine and fill orders; creating something of a vicious circle, because those who do not have their orders filled soon stop ordering. None of the income from the business has been put aside into a sinking fund for the expansion of the business in plant and advertising. Naturally, then, it cannot grow except by the wholesale injection of life-giving dollar plasma. It was my hope to raise enough to begin. But it is an unfortunate fact that a small amount of money would just go down the drain. It is not a matter of ten thousand, but, I should say, a minimum of fifty thousand dollars that is required.
There is a contact upon which I have been counting to produce the needed funds. However, the circumstances have been such as to call for some degree of patience on my part, because of the unenthusiastic attitude of an intermediary, who, unfortunately, cannot be dispensed with, so far as this contact is concerned.
While awaiting the materialization of this more-than-a-hope, I had intended to work at selling Atomidine and really made scarcely a beginning in this when it became necessary to face the exigencies of day to day existence. I had to get a job and have an income of at least fifty a week just to get by
- and such an income from Atomidine at its present stage of development is out of the question. My job has taken so much of my time as to leave available a mere few hours in the evening several times a week, which I might in some manner put into Atomidine. It would be a mere driblet, practically ineffectual.
I reminded Bisey of the orders for you and Godfrey and he promised again to fill them. But I feel that there may be an inertia on his part in the handling of the business, because he keeps expecting other developments to take the business out of his home and put it on a self-supporting, full-time basis. I shall, if he has not filled the orders, when next I see him this week, offer to devote an evening or two to packaging the stuff and getting it off to you.
I have not deserted my intentions to carry through on the general plan indicated previously. It is still my intent and will within a few months lead to action of one type or another to advance the realization of the purpose, to put the Association’s products on the market and make available the good accrued from your father’s life to all who seek that good. The idea, with Bisey’s consent, is that the same company will handle Atomidine, distribution and manufacture, as would handle of all the Association’s products, on the basis of a royalty per bottle sold to go the Bisey estate, and an entirely reasonable royalty, graded down as sales increase.
Although I read Sugrue’s biography of Mr. Cayce about four years ago, I had not recalled that the Association had ventured to manufacture and distribute the products and devices and that the venture has petered out. This was news to me when I reread the book recently and also found information about Bisey therein, too, which I had recalled. As a matter of fact it was surprising to me how much was contained therein that I did not recall having read before.
It would require less capital, to begin with, just to distribute the completed product. And with respect to Atomidine, for example, it would be intended that its manufacture remain in the hands of Schieffelin & Co. until such time as sales were high enough to warrant venturing into the manufacturing. But certainly the aim would be to handle the manufacturing, as well as distribution, at the earliest practicable moment. It seems to be this approach would also be desirable with respect to all purely Cayce remedies.
The possibility of working with doctors individually and interesting them in taking part in the development of different products is more than a merely ethical approach, but is yet very limited, and as you point out a complicated one, which would be practicable only in relation to a product and disease that might have great public relations value. Such as the application of Atomidine to the prevention of infantile paralysis, as an outstanding example. Have you ever attempted to communicate with the foundation of Hot Springs with regard to this? I know that Bisey probably does not even know that a reading mentioned such a possibility. Even if he does, I doubt that he has done anything about it.
Of course, I had no particular desire to handle the whole matter myself. I simply decided to take the initiative, because I wanted to see it done; and rather than criticize anyone else’s failure to live up to the possibilities contingent in the entire situation, it is much more constructive and in harmony with the creative forces to take the initiative. I would, therefore, welcome participation in all aspects of the venture. Raising the money as I had planned would enable me to take the initiative strongly and proceed surely. With my situation as it now is, however, it is probably up to group action to yield results, with the Association as the focus for the initiative.
Bisey has suggested, and I think it feasible, that in incorporating sufficient funds could be raised by sending out letters announcing the sale of stock to all members of the Association. The letter would explain the venture, its purposes and scope, fully, of course. This thought must have occurred to you. If it has, or if it has not, what are your thoughts on it? In this way, it seems to me, a cooperative drug company, with a major portion of the profits accruing to the Association for the hospital and its other work, would be practicable. In view of the apparent greediness of the intermediary with whom I have been attempting to deal, this would seem to me a better plan to commence with. Once the thing starts, I am almost certain funds would be available from my source within a short time. I myself don’t have any money to put into it, but I might manage a G.I. loan for the purpose.
By the way, four volumes of the five constituting The Great Harmonia by Andrew Jackson Davis are available at a price of
30 from a book store with which I am in communication. Would you be interested in purchasing them? The backs are not in very good condition, but the books are there. There's time in which to make the transaction, if you so desire. Also have located in [[Chicago|Chicago]], a copy of The Harmonial Man by A. J. Davis, for5. which I shall purchase myself. I expect to hear of others.Your comments on my reading I found decidedly helpful in clarifying the meanings. On the astrological portion, you made certain statements which you then crossed out. ”… including the present.” and ” - Saturn to the present, Mars to the English, Jupiter to the…” Would you elucidate this avoidance of a point which seemed very concrete and pertinent? I refer to Saturn, of course, which is foolishly regarded, often, as evil - but is rather indicative of change which is climactic.
As to bevulsion or attraction where livestock, hides and some foods are concerned: when I was much younger, to a great extent, and yet to some extent, the smell of leather causes a nausea and queasiness. Sugar, when I was much younger, was the object of craving in me. These are the only food idiosyncracies of which I am aware. Also had a kind of allergy to sugar.
I hope I shall have some good news to get off to you within a short while. In the meantime you might let me know what you think about the various points I have brought up.
Best regards to all,
Sincerely yours, [3198]

Mr. Hugh Lynn Cayce, General Manager
I wonder if it would be possible for you to send me all possible information on Atomidine contained in the readings
- either extracts or otherwise? I should be glad to do any typing in that connection which would be necessary.
I remember that Edgar Cayce often said, in connection particularly with the successful functioning and fulfillment of the Association’s work, that bad motives in participating individuals would cause all efforts to become sterile. To me it seems that Bisey should have given the Association a part interest in Atomidine, since the readings were instrumental in perfecting the formula and process for producing it. Yet Bisey, from the talks I have had with him, doesn’t seem to have ever thought of that. And his general outlook seems to me to be anything but altruistic. Is it not possible that Atomidine has thus far been a relative failure in reaching the people it should have reached, because of the bad motives? And possibly this might even apply to Wirsing’s Lotion, and Ipsab. I have examined my self, in this respect, to check on my own motives; and whereas there is the nexus of selfishness in me in the background, “I” am in control, I am pretty sure.
Just thought I would get these few thoughts off my chest.
Sincerely yours, [3198]

Mr. [3198] …, N.Y.
Dear Mr. [3198]
I was glad to have your letter of July 30th.
I am hoping that in the early Fall when I am in New York that we may be able to get several of our members who are interested in the “Specifics” together for a discussion of just how they can be presented to the public. I am certainly looking forward to a long talk with you on the subject. I believe that my experience with the Health Home Remedies Corporation will be valuable in designing a plan upon which we can operate.
I have made a note of your request for the information on Atomidine. It will be necessary for us to have the copying of this information done in the office and I will have a typist undertake it just as quickly as possible. We do not feel that it is wise to send original copies of the readings outside the office until we are able to completely duplicate them.
I have never met Mr. Bisey. My only connection was with his father, whom I consider to be a very fine gentleman.
At the present time we do not have any life memberships in the Association. Both our active and associate memberships are on a yearly basis. The original memberships, when readings were being given, included one reading and a subscription to the Bulletin for one year. During that year, an individual might apply for subsequent readings. I am enclosing a membership blank in your name. You may not have seen this one since it has been printed.
We should have you as an active member. The weekly reading Extracts frequently contain references to the “Specifics” in which you are particularly interested. Note that this membership can be handled on a monthly or quarterly basis, if you so desire.
Sincerely yours, Hugh Lynn Cayce [HLC:o] enc.

Association for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., Arctic Circle, Virginia Beach, Virginia
Dear Sirs:
I recall reading the weekly diary letter a little while ago something about the special research done for a jeweler on gems by a woman who makes herself available for just such special work at a cost of $50 a week.
Since I should like very much to receive the information on Atomidine I requested some time ago, I was wondering if I could make some similar arrangement with you. Would you give me the details and perhaps next week I shall be in a position to furnish the necessary money, or whatever week is convenient for you. This would have particular reference to the readings given to Mr. Bisey at the time Mr. Cayce helped him to perfect Atomidine. However, all possible information on its use would also be desired, its effect and its method of operation on the body.
Thank you,
Sincerely yours, [3198]
I am seeing Bisey this week.

Mr. [3198] …, N.Y.
Dear Mr. [3198]
We were glad to have your letter of Nov. 4th making an inquiry regarding the possibility of having extracting work done on the information about Atomidine. I believe we could work out an arrangement similar to the project involved on the gem material, altho before undertaking this project, it would be wise for us to know just how far you want to go with it. Besides the special readings given for Dr. Bisey, Atomidine has been mentioned in a large number of the physical readings covering a wide variety of ailments. In some of these readings, brief descriptions are given of the way the Atomidine worked.
We might see how much work on this subject could be done in a week’s time. It would certainly be wise to look forward to a complete abstracting of all of our information on Atomidine in order to get a complete picture of the readings’ point of view regarding its effectiveness.
You will find that some copies of the Weekly Reading Extracts are missing from the file which I sent you on Nov. 7th. We will fill these in at a later date.
I am looking forward to seeing you in New York during the week from the 19th through the 26th.
Sincerely, Hugh Lynn Cayce [HLC/dm]
R19. 11/27/46 Mr. [3198]‘s ltr. to HLC:
Mr. Hugh Lynn Cayce, Manager, Association for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., Virginia Beach, Virginia
Dear Hugh,
I want to express again my pleasure in meeting you personally and finding you everything you should be. As you indicated in your last letter there is no reason why we should not, after our long correspondence and meeting, and in view of our mutual interests, address each other by first name. My friends call me [3198] after an uncle whose name also was not that.
I wish to submit another name for sample material of your organization, besides the three I already submitted: Mr. and Mrs. […], New York, N.Y. (Zone 24).
I shall be awaiting the names and addresses of those persons in this area interested in the idea of a corporation to put the remedies on the market. I know you must be fully aware of the moral problems attendant upon such an undertaking. However, I shall like to advance my interpretations of the applications of the “Thou shalt love…” law to the working of the Association’s broad work, including the present plan in view, for your consideration. It seems to me that these problems are the first to require working out in any venture, particularly in the nature of this work, if success is to be met with. Much of Edgar Cayce’s advice as to the working of the Association would point to this conclusion.
When it comes to the worship of One God, can there be any question of ulterior and immediate motives? The two seem quite incongruent. In the world of the One God the only motive admissible, in true worship, is the service of God and fellowman. All else is imperfect worship. The closest competitor in the hearts of men for the altar of God is money. Because this is a society and time when money SEEMS to be so necessary to accomplish anything or to get the most out of life, even so far as making the Association a success would be concerned, there is a dangerous and concealed snare which catches so many in respect of money, in that it tends to become the IMMEDIATE goal apparently required to attain the ulterior goal, which might broadly be construed to constitute “service to God and fellowman”. Progressively the fervor with which the ulterior goal may at first be held in mind and heart vanishes, the immediate goal usurping its place as an object of worship. The SUCCESS OF THE ASSOCIATION ITSELF would constitute exactly an insidious immediate and later usurping motive and goal, if we did not watch ourselves constantly. No period of time, however short or considered, may be allotted the allowance of assuming the guise of an immediate goal, intermediate to an ulterior, without the danger becoming imminent, truly immediately operative and sinful.
Obviously, the choice of motive is closely tied in with the choice of method. The Association is a METHOD rather than an intermediate goal. The Remedies Corporation would also be a METHOD. Both are methods of serving God and fellowman in continuance of the ideal service which Edgar Cayce rendered while alive. To remain effective in this work, the methods chosen must remain methods and not degenerate into intermediate goals.
The issues raised by the above comment cover a wide field. One aspect which must be examined most closely to determine that it does not violate the above criteria is that of financing. If a money-making motive begins to sprout, for whatever ulterior motive and however fine the ultimate goal, it calls for clipping, or preferably uprooting. It is my conviction that if anyone, for example, enters the Remedies Corporation with a motive to make money, the work will become adulterated and will inevitably fail, whatever the prospects to begin with. Depending upon the side-issues, such an adulteration might even cause other branches of the work to wither. For example, again, (illustrating the main point) the Association itself, in my interpretation, should be run with no consideration that is not flexible and known to be so as regards monetary matters. In the membership qualifications, say, it would seem proper to permit anyone to belong to the Association regardless of the dues. That such and such dues are considered by the Association as commensurate with the MATERIAL services rendered, such as literature, should certainly be publicized. That those material services are available to anyone who wishes them, whether or not he is capable of paying the required sums, should be equally publicized. A seemingly minor problem of this type is really of great importance in this work. When the remedies are put out, say, whereas a commensurate price will be charged according to the material services performed, nevertheless they should be available to all who need and cannot pay, and this should be publicized as much as the sale for money should be.
The foregoing paragraph embodies what are to me inevitable conclusions if One God is to live in this work. The only kind of money which will be fertile in this work is that given and received in such a spirit as is indicated. I should like your reaction to my views expressed above.
Sincerely yours, and happy Thanksgiving to you all, [3198]
R20. 12/20/46 HLC’s letter:
Mr. [3198] …, N.Y.
Dear Mr. [3198]
Evidently, we both have gone through a period of waiting.
First, let me thank you for your fine letter of Nov. 27th. I appreciate your writing me so fully with regard to your ideas about the ideals of the work which we are considering undertaking. Let me say again that I like your approach and that I like you personally.
I had hoped to get some figures through you from Bisey on the Atomidine set-up as I have the feeling that my letters to the various people who are not going to be in the New York area should include at least the first answers to the questions that will naturally come up regarding Bisey’s participation in the manufacture and distribution of the product. I think we had best delay now on seeing anyone in the New York area about this proposition until after the holidays. I want to take the time to write the right kind of personal letter to each of the individuals whom you will see, and I think all of them are going to be too tied up to go into this matter with you right now.
As I told you when I was in New York, I think perhaps some of the younger members of the Association, especially some of those I have already mentioned - Harden, Rasch, etc. - are going to be more interested in this proposition than many of our older members who still have the bad taste in their mouths of the Health Home Remedies Corp.
I hate to delay in this matter but I think it is much better for us to get off on the right foot than have to backtrack. I was swamped with work when I got back from the New York trip and have not caught up yet.
Thank you for the name and address of Mr. and Mrs. Rudin. We are sending them literature. [HLC]

R23. 11/19/68 GD’s note: Mr. [3198] has remained actively interested and cooperative in A.R.E. work to this date.
At one time he considered entering medical school in order to better serve the A.R.E. interests as a physician. I understand he is doing office work but I don’t know just what kind.
R24. 10/30/73 Mr. [3198]‘s letter:
Dear Gladys,
Re: Life Reading 3198-1 [Different numbering from his copy]
I’m sorry to say that the numbers of my readings have been so mutilated and obscured that I can’t make them out. Will this prevent you from connecting them up with what I have to report? Mr. Clapp suggested that I write you regarding anything to confirm the life reading which I obtained in 1940 in Hawaii, while I was in the army. I assume he means “anything,” so I’ll go through it and make positive comments as to what I consider evidential:
P. 2, par. 2 [Par. 6]: The readings description of me in the third paragraph was “right on the nose” in every way respect, the paragraph beginning, “Thus, as we find…”
P. 2, par. 4 [Par. 8]: A curious “coincidence” is to be noted in the fifth paragraph. “Erasmus” is a family name and my father once told me that a priest in Rome in our family was named Erasmus. My father was not educated, so I’m quite sure he did not know that Erasmus was from the Greek and that the name meant “lovable.” This paragraph in the reading begins: “This, then makes for an entity that is lovable.” I didn’t know it either at the time of the reading but found out years later. In this paragraph the reading hit upon the central problem of my life, that I’ve always felt unloved and unlovable. In the last few years I’ve traced in dream-reverie some of the childhood incidents that gave me this feeling, which has colored my whole life, so that I understand much better today its “psychological” roots. Nevertheless, love in many ways remains a thorny problem for me, although I’ve arrived at considerable inner adjustment just in the last few years, about 3 or 4 years (today I am 57 years old).
P. 2, par. 4 [Par. 8]: When the reading states in the last sentence of that (fifth) paragraph and in the sixth paragraph always was true, that I did and still do exercise an understanding of my experiences as opportunities for achieving “more perfect understanding,” etc., etc. If I hadn’t somehow had the ability to exercise this faculty, I’m sure I would have cracked up many years ago.
P. 2, par. 6 [Par. 10]: The reading’s description of my personality in the seventh paragraph is also very accurate in that first sentence, beginning, “One that will find refuge ever…”
P. 2, par. 7 [Par. 11]: The description in the first few sentences of the eighth paragraph was also entirely accurate. The trend of my life the last few years is more and more as he mentioned in the remainder of this paragraph.
P. 3, par. 2 [Par. 12]: As to the ninth paragraph, I’ve never been quite sure what it referred to. I’ve been (with gaps of non-smoking occasionally for a period of 6 months to 3 years) a chain smoker since I was 21. On the other hand, since about 8 years ago, when I reached a crisis in my life, physically and emotionally, I’ve taken much better care of myself, particularly in my diet, and have felt a tremendous improvement all around. In about 1947 I became infected with a serious dysentery from contaminated vegetables. I was sick for weeks and when we finally called the doctor (which I refused to have until I felt I was getting better) he said he didn’t know how I pulled through it alone. I didn’t tell him either, but I treated myself with 2 things only, loads of Glyco-Thymoline and Atomidine. (My physical reading had mentioned that I should take Glyco-Thymoline regularly.) He gave me no medication but just prescribed chicken soup.
In this paragraph [Par. 12] he mentions “a minor infraction” etc., and to this day I have formed no understanding of this reference. I could speculate, but there seems no point in that.
P. 3, par. 4 [Par. 14]: The eleventh paragraph starts on my reincarnation during “construction days following the American Revolution.” I once visited an exhibit of a model home of colonial days at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and I found myself deeply drawn and moved by the rooms. Somehow they seemed familiar and “at home” to me.
P. 3, par. 6 [Par. 16]: The fourteenth paragraph, “Then in the name Lawrence Avery…” refers to coding, datasticians, statisticians. I have a strong repugnance to statistical work, although I am very accurate and fast with figures. Mathematical puzzles have always fascinated me and I’m good at solving them. But I am an expert in and love to do acrostics and crossword puzzles are like child’s play to me. I’ve even constructed crossword puzzles. Secret codes and stories about the breaking of codes have since childhood been subjects of interest to me, though I’ve never had work along this line.
P. 3, par. 7 [Par. 17]: “Hence, those things pertaining to livestock, to hides…” begins the 15th paragraph. The only association I had here for years was that as a child the smell of fresh leather nauseated and suffocated me to the point of nausea and vomiting. I still find it unpleasant. But only in the last few years I became aware of other components of this carry-over. For years, unconsciously, I always felt uncomfortable on rugs of any kind, and particularly irritating to me were small rugs or anything soft under my feet, even a piece of cloth. And then I realized this was particularly so when I was wearing shoes. And simultaneously I realized that I had this from working with hides and pieces of hides which in my workshop in the life would often fall underfoot and which I would kick aside. This flashed into my mind one day when I was kicking aside, as was my habit, the bathroom rug. Another thing in this connection was my distaste of touching fur at all, and associated with this an aversion to touching furry animals. And one day I realized upon touching a suede jacket being worn by someone that I found the feel of it most repugnant. So all of this does seem to pertain to that reincarnation as given in the reading in this short paragraph.
P. 3, par. 8 [Par. 18]: The sixteenth paragraph I believe points to my trait, particularly of earlier years (I’m much better now) of constantly arguing and trying to persuade others to my beliefs in the occult ideology, while, apart from the intellect, I was in many ways remiss in the applications of what I understand.
P. 3, par. 8 [Par. 19]: The seventeeth paragraph begins the English reincarnation. The first paragraph may relate in this life to my association with radical and revolutionary causes, particularly during 1950, 1951 and 1952. But I’m still intensely aware of political programs and issues and find myself generally in agreement with the left wing.
P. 4, par. 1 [Par. 20]: As to the 18th paragraph I have no associations around this that I am aware of. [Ordinance?]
P. 4, par. 2 [Par. 21]: However, as to the nineteenth paragraph, I did a few years ago work as a teacher for 6 months (I was then quite prepared to make a career in this field and took a great interest in what I was doing) in an institution that was founded to help rehabilitate crippled people, both physically and mentally. Through no will of mine, this particular activity was terminated, but I did find it rewarding, found my pupils responsive to me and feel I had real promise for this work. However, I no longer am inclined to work in this field as it is presently organized and administered.
P. 3., par. 6 & p. 4, par. 3 [Par. 16, 22]: (By the way I checked in libraries on both names, Lawrence Avery in post-revolutionary times, and Alexander Attellu in Norman, England, but was not able to find either one. My checking was just a scratching of the surface, of course.)
P. 4, par. 2 [Par. 21]: Perhaps, the fact that on those few occasions I’ve been in court I find myself very uncomfortable, and that I feel invariably antagonistic to the judge and never expect justice, may be related to this experience in England, since I was presumably tried and hanged or beheaded. On the other hand it could simply be a reflection of the poor quality and functioning of our courts and court personnel.
P. 4, par. 4, 5 [Par. 23, 24]: The twenty-first paragraph begins the reincarnation “in the promised land…” Outside of the fact that I accept Jesus as my elder brother, guide and teacher (despite my ventures and knowledge of Buddhism, The Vendata, Yoga, Zen and Taoism) I have no associations I can fix on as to the this and the next paragraphs.
P. 4, par. 6 [Par. 25]: As to the twenty-third paragraph, while I do feel I have the executive abilities referred to, I’ve only recently been headed somewhat in this direction. I’ve never really understood the reference here, “though in a mercantile activity.” (I just noticed he adds, “or of such nature.” Odd that I never observed that before, since it does clarify it somewhat.)
P. 4, par. 7 [Par. 26]: In the twenty-second paragraph I wish to state this is, even in business, always my aspiration, and I do try to keep with “those spiritual forces that prompt” me, etc., etc. It seems like my essential nature.
P. 4, par. 8 [Par. 27, 28]: In the twenty-third paragraph I don’t understand the specific reference in the first sentence, but the prayer the reading gives here I’ve used ever since, though somehow “that capacity” referred to was never clear to me, since no work I performed for a livelihood ever approached such a capacity. (It was curious that over the years I’ve always made the remark now and then that “I should have been a minister or priest.”) Now, however, during the past few years, the meaning of this begins to dawn on me. Over the years I’ve written a number of essays, all with metaphysical, philosophic and spiritual content (the only kind of writing that has ever appealed to me) and increasingly in the last few years, along with poetry of a similar nature. (I’ve never sought publication, but am now preparing to print them at my own expense.) Most all seem to be directed to the fulfillment of this prayer, “…in which the world may know of thee in a greater, and in a better light or application,” though they were not written with this conscious intention.
P. 4, par. 10 & p. 5, par. 1 [Par. 30]: In the twenty-fourth paragraph the two names given for the Promised Land reincarnation do not ring any bell or evoke any association.
P. 5, par. 2 [Par. 31]: The twenty-fifth paragraph starts the reincarnation in “Egyptian land during…preparations for many to go into foreign lands as emissaries.” I had always thought of myself as one of those emissaries, but I noted just this past year that the reading may imply this but doesn’t state it specifically. There obviously was an inner response when I first read this and I knew I was one of the emissaries.
P. 5, par. 3 [Par. 32]: The twenty-sixth paragraph is a true statement. I’ve always been good in learning languages but find, if I don’t use them, I tend to lose my fluency. I’ve studied and gotten high marks in Latin, German, Italian and French and have picked up a good deal of Spanish. My wife also shares this interest and ability and I feel she was certainly in this reincarnation with me, as well as the English revolutionary one. The others I’m not sure of.
P. 5, par. 4 [Par. 33]: The twenty-seventh paragraph probably refers to my over-concern through much of my life with the “outside” spiritual, physical and economic conditions of the earth, and an overlooking of studying to show myself “approved unto God,” the necessary “inside” work.
P. 5, par. 5 [Par. 33]: The twenty-eighth paragraph hits home in that for years I felt ashamed that much of my self-support and support of my family was by stenography and I used to say I hated typing (at which I’ve always been superior…when I first learned I won first prize in a state stenography contest). I even refused to type and got away from shorthand and typing in a job that lasted about ten years, as an administrative assistant. But in the last few years I’ve gotten (through teaching typing and shorthand) into typesetting, photo and cold typesetting, Compugraphic and IBM equipment. I suddenly enjoy typing, now that I’m using it at a higher skill level in typesetting. I’m really good in this field (at the same time I always feel that the skill is really being exercised by the Self).
His reference in this paragraph to condemnation of self along with others pinpointed a dominant trait in me for years, but this has largely been surmounted.
P. 5, par. 6 [Par. 34]: In the twenty-ninth paragraph, “Remember the prayer: ‘Forgive, even as I forgive’…” I applied this consciously a few years ago for the first time, with reference to many resentments I had buried in myself, and found myself liberated from a burden I had carried for a long time. As to the “questionable nature” of the “active influence,” I’ve recently had more insight into this too, so that I feel sure it is past the turning point, though still there.
A-1 [Par. 36-A]: The answer at the end of the reading was pointed and cogent, and the last paragraph again referred to characteristics that were present much more strongly in the past than now. The last 5 lines of this closing paragraph today have a great deal of meaning for me, and I feel that the movement of my life at last consciously is in this direction, though I now see that this direction always formed the matrix of my development over the years, however spotty and occasional it may have been.
That is it, I guess.
I hope you can read my writing (note that in my aversion to typing this kind of material, which still lingers, I had written this out by hand and intended to let you suffer trying to decipher my scribbling). Probably, though, this is self-condemnation, since I really find it more convenient to write rather than to type, and somehow my ideas flow better when I write. All my creative work is done by pen at first.
Remember me to Mr. Turner, Al. My love to both of you wonderful souls. [GD’s note: He had not heard that Albert E. Turner died in 1968.]
Sincerely, E./Ras [3198]
P.S. As a typesetter, and greatly to my liking, I am now Ras [3198] (derived from the second syllable of Erasmus). For years I was called “Eddie” which I never felt or liked, though my immediate circle of friends and family still use it. I never liked Erasmus, because of early associations with corruptions of it like “Rastus” “Rasmo”, etc.
R25. 10/23/74 GD’s letter to Mr. [3198]:
Dear Ras:
This is a great nickname and I like it so much better than “Eddie”, though Edgar Cayce preferred it for himself and wished that more people would call him that, as he never cared for the name Edgar.
Thank you so much for the detailed report on your Life Reading which you sent about a year ago. (I dictated a long letter on tape to you very shortly after receiving the report, but something was wrong with the tape and the girl could not transcribe it. All this time your letter has been piled with other things on my desk waiting for an answer!) I am very grateful to Bob Clapp that he suggested you do this. I am making it a part of your Life Reading, as a supplement, so that the whole story will be available as a study. Bob and I were discussing the possibility of an article being written on your Life Reading, around your report, with your permission, of course. I am making a copy of it - the entire reading and report - for Violet Shelley, our Editor of Publications, with the idea of getting her reaction as to a news article on it. Would you object to this? Of course, you could read and edit it before publishing.
I have only deleted your LAST name and left the rest of it as you explained it in your report. Is this okay?
Did you know that the name ERASTUS is in the Bible in two places? Acts 19:22 and II Timothy 4:20.
By the way, your typing job was so perfect that I did not need to change one thing in the report, except to list the correct Case Number and paragraph numbers according to the way they now appear on the file copy, and according to the indexing of each paragraph, etc.
It seems to me that in my letter on tape I went into some detail regarding some paragraphs, telling you some of my ideas regarding how I felt the reading had worked out even though you had not noticed it in a few instances. However, I can’t remember now what those ideas were. I should stick to typing my own letters. After all, I am primarily a typist!
Bless you and yours. Oh, I forgot to tell you that my beloved Al passed through “God’s Open Door” on June 27, 1968. Enclosed are a couple of memorial write-ups about him. He is still with us. As the readings say, good lives on - and love goes far beyond the grave. I know from personal experience that this is true.
Sincerely, [signed] Gladys Davis Turner

Dear Mr. Cayce,
If I were out of the army, I should be talking to you now instead of writing. Thomas Sugrue’s story of your work & your life seems to have come to me, when I most needed it, & since I can’t talk to you I must write.
For a number of years I have studied the occult - but it is only in the past two years that I have observed any signs of advancement in understanding & feeling. But it is only now that I recognize what work lies ahead. My life must, it seems, follow the Spiritual Law in which I believe - the Truths which are explained in the many presentations of the ancient Mystery Wisdom which have been published are accepted by me completely. Something compels me to accept them - I sense their Truth, tho my intellectual comprehension necessarily lags.
I have felt under some spiritual guidance this last year and a half - & suddenly, something has happened to me, mentally
- just what I honestly don’t know. Exactly what I do know now about my self is not at all clear. And I believe, that before one can approach the Christ old roots must be uptorn - it is the old roots in me, past influences, which I believe are responsible for my present condition of confusion. It is serious -
Briefly, I need & beg your help by a complete reading of me
- physical, mental, & life - something by which I may orient & steady my life from here on to the ultimate purpose of fulfilling the spiritual law - my one sincere (I pray) aim in life. Any advice & instruction given will be followed implicitly from the moment of receipt of your reply. Please -
Truly, [3198]

Hawaii Dear Mr. Cayce,
Thank you for your kind letter of June 3rd. In spite of your kind offer to overlook the dues until after the war, I want to pay half now & half next month - am inclosing, therefore, a ten-dollar money order as first payment. I know what the Association has been up against in the past & since I am a firm believer in the archaic mystery-wisdom, & have absolute faith in you & in the source of your power, you can count on me from now till doomsday to do all I can to assist your work. It’s valuable contribution to the spiritual well-being & advancement of humanity cannot be measured. Some day, after the war, I want to offer my material services in whatever capacity I may be of use.
The application is inclosed, filled out in accordance with your instructions. I need all three types of readings, & so have checked them. I cannot give my present address any more specifically - I trust what I have given will prove sufficient. Will I be notified of the date or dates of readings so that I may be in the most favorable attitude & circumstance at time of reading? There is a difference of 7 1/2 hrs. time between here and Virginia Beach. The name appearing on my birth certificate is [3198] - suffixes have been anglicized. My home address is …, Conn., - (if this will be of any assistance).
Please do send me your monthly bulletins & samples of your publications. If at all possible I should like those original readings which revealed the Truths contained in the chapter titled “Philosophy” in “There Is A River” - would a complete presentation of these revealed truths be available?
In sincere faith, [3198]
