This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 7th day of September, 1943, in accordance with request made by the self - Mrs. [3200], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by the book, THERE IS A RIVER.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno.]
Time of Reading 3:40 to 3:55 P. M. Eastern War Time. …, Penna.
-
GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [3200].
-
As we find, there are disturbing conditions which prevent the better normal physical functioning.
-
While there is much to be gained from analyzing of the body from the astrological angle, or from the purposes of the entity in the earth, we find that these physical disturbances in the present are from minor refractions of the law in other experiences that are being met.
-
Thus, where there are those disturbances to the life flow of the body, - that is, the circulation between lungs, heart, liver and kidneys, - these areas are subject to disturbances that are brought about by the anxieties, or by the forming of bacilli in one or the other portions of same - in the lower portions of the lungs, the throat and the bronchia.
-
These have brought that which is termed tubercle in lungs. Much of this has been stayed, non-active, yet it has taken hold on the lymph circulation - or there is the inability of the gastric flow to digest certain foods that would be most beneficial to the body.
-
Thus, as we find:
-
We would keep in the open as much as practical during the daytime, until there is at least a great deal less sun in the heavens in the daytime. Keep a regular exercise in the open.
-
Do follow much of those things that may be indicated, to aid in making the conditions through the lungs better; adding the other elements to that being administered - and we should see the body brought back to much nearer normal conditions in the body.
-
First we would give, then, that there be prepared the charred keg for inhaling the fumes from Apple Brandy. Put a gallon and a half of Pure Apple Brandy in quite a large container - a two or three gallon charred oak keg, so as to get quite a large evaporation. Use only redistilled brandy. Prepare so that the fumes, not the brandy itself, may be inhaled into the lungs, throat and bronchi. These will act as an antiseptic as well as being a healing agent. In the beginning take only two or three whiffs at the time, keeping the corks in the small holes at the end of the keg when not in use. Use these inhalations twice or three times each day, one or two whiffs in the beginning - not too deep.
-
As an aid to the digestive forces we would take daily, preferably at the evening meal, about three-quarters of a teaspoonful of ACIGEST stirred in a glass of raw milk.
-
Be mindful of the diet. Keep plenty of liver, calves’ liver, plenty of chicken livers, the livers of any of the animals that are good for eating; broiled, not ever fried, so as to obtain from same as much of the vital energies as possible that are particularly active in these parts of the body - these particular organs of the animal that are good for meat or service for the human being. These we would take regularly, as well as fish and fowl and leafy vegetables. These are preferable to those characters of foods that require a great deal of seasoning. Leafy vegetables are preferable for the body.
-
Keep up much of that which has already been indicated, but add these two properties suggested - and we should not only be rid of the destructive forces but care for much of the other disturbances through the body, making for better general physical conditions with this body.
-
Do that.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Is there anything wrong with my physical condition other than tuberculosis? (A) As indicated, the digestion. This is an after effect that often comes with distresses of this nature.
-
(Q) Will I regain strength and gain weight by following these treatments suggested? (A) This is impractical to say; but as we find these offer the channels through which the body may attain normalcy with this present particular body.
-
We are through with this Reading.

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 9/14/43 (Saturday) [3200]‘s letter:
Dear Mr. Cayce:
I received my ‘reading’ of September 7, and I shall do my best to carry out your instructions. I would like to have a check reading in the future. But as I have to wait a ‘few weeks’ for the charred oak keg I suppose it would be best to wait til I have everything and have used them for a time. You also mentioned in the Reading that much would be gained by analyzing from the astrological angle. By that is it meant a ‘Life’ reading? If so, what would be the cost and what arrangements would have to be made?
I wish to thank you for your service, I am quite sure I will benefit by it.
Yours very truly, (Mrs.) [3200]
R2. 9/23/43 (Thursday) [3200]‘s letter:
Dear Mr. Cayce:
I received your letter today and I am sorry to report I am having difficulties in all ways. I cannot find Redistilled Apple Brandy. Could you help me in this matter?
Also I feel as though I should write and explain the rest of my problem. When I left the Satatorium I lived with my husband’s mother. She has continually disbelieved in your reading and would not allow me to carry out treatment without ridicule. I was extremely unhappy there and decided to come and stay with my father, he is a widower and is not equipped to care for anyone who is helpless. I am able to care for myself more or less; however, since my reading and all my conflicting emotions I have been unable to eat and consequently have been losing weight which I can ill afford. I am at loss about what to say about the Life Reading. I feel as though it would be the solution as to where I should go and why but since my illness I am very emotionally unstable and if I would be unable to carry it out (as I am my physical reading) I fear I would do myself real harm worrying.
I had an X-ray recently at the place where I receive my treatments. The doctor told me the involvement was calcifying and hardening and that it is all in the apex of my lung. Your reading mentioned lower portions of lung throat and bronchi. Of course, I realize you never know what a reading will say and why but I thought perhaps you could help me as there doesn’t seem to be anyone else who will understand.
I could not procure the money for the life reading immediately. Do you think I should have it?
Yours very truly, (Mrs.) [3200]
R3. 9/30/43 EC’s letter:
Mrs. [3200] …, Penna.
Dear Mrs. [3200]
I have yours of the 23rd, and I am sorry to hear that you are having trouble getting straightened out or started with your treatments. We have no way to help matters, but I think if you are determined to carry out your suggestions, you can get it. A young man, Mr. [3085], …, Pa., who has had the trouble as yours, could tell you just how you could obtain the things needed in your treatment. Please write him, for his suggestions were about the same as yours.
Hoping that you will use it to some advantage and that you will write him, for he was in the same sanatorium as you were.
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce
R4. 11/23/43 [3200]‘s letter:
…, Pa.
Dear Mr. Cayce -
I received your letter telling about the plans for establishing a Sponsorship fund for the Association. I regret very much to say that at this time it is impossible for me to help but I hope to be able to do so in the future. I believe whole-heartedly in the work you are doing and I want to do my share in helping you to help others.
I also want to tell you that [3085] another member who’s address you sent me has helped me considerably in carrying out my treatment in procuring a charred keg for me and telling where to get the Apple Brandy. I would also like to inquire if it is possible for me to have a check reading within a reasonable time? Also could I have the data on the Life Reading?
Hoping to be of service in the future. [3200]
R5. 12/1/43 EC’s letter to Mrs. [3200] - see under 1548-1 Reports.
R6. 1/28/44 [3200]‘s letter:
Dear Mr. Cayce:
I want to tell you that I have been following the instructions of my reading rather as closely as I can since November 11. Since that time I have noticed a decided improvement in my general condition and have gained about ten pounds in weight. Prior to that I spent about three years and two thousand dollars for Sanatorium treatment and have had not had half the results I’ve experienced since I followed your instructions. I can’t begin to tell you how grateful I feel, a person can’t measure or express what their return to health means. Of course, I realize I have a long way to go as yet but the improvement I have made is really remarkable as many people have noticed.
I am still taking treatment from the doctor. Have one lung collapsed with air and the other with a phrenic nerve crush operation. But as far as I am concerned they are merely superfluous to me now and would discontinue them without regret.
I would very much like to have a check reading sometime. I will send you a check for same next month if you would be so kind as to reserve a time for me.
My only regret is that the work you are doing isn’t more easily explained. But I suppose that is the price you must pay for your remarkable gift.
Sincerely yours, [3200]
R7. 7/15/44 [3200]‘s letter:
Dear Mr. Cayce -
You have not heard from me for some time but I have been waiting for the doctors to release me from the treatment they have been giving me for my condition before I wrote for a check reading. This has come about at last. So I am enclosing $10.- for the check.
I have noticed the greatest improvement since I have followed your instructions but still have stomach trouble although not nearly as severe or as often and it is for that reason I am anxious to have this reading.
I also want to inform you that since I’ve read your book “There Is a River” my outlook on life has changed completely. The only thing is there are so many things I want to learn and understand that I hardly know where to begin, I would like your opinion about joining the Rosicrucians, what little I’ve learned about their teachings seem to coincide with yours. Am I right in thinking so? I have gotten some friends interested in your work and we may make the trip to Virginia Beach when my reading is due.
Thank you for your kind and encouraging letters.

R8. 7/22/44 EC’s letter:
Mrs. [3200] …, Pa.
Dear Mrs. [3200]
We are making the appointment for your check-physical reading on the afternoon of Oct. 26th, 1944, between 3:30 and 4:30, EWT.
We are pleased to know that you are responding so nicely to your treatments. Would you kindly let us have a complete report on the manner in which you have followed the treatments, beginning with how long you had to wait before getting started on your treatments, why you went back to the doctors care - and what treatments you were given by him, the results, and your present condition. We would also like any information (which you have not already given us) regarding your condition prior to the reading, such as how long you were sick, when you first knew about it, what type of treatments you received while under doctors care. Include any and all details in their proper order. This information is very important to our research work, and is extremely helpful to us in formulating the questions you present.
We sincerely hope that you can come for your check reading. If this is not possible, let us know just where you will be during the hour set for your reading. As you know we cannot get your reading without this information. Also let us have any questions you care to ask at that time. I would like to suggest that you read very carefully, our “Physical Readings,” booklet. I believe that you will find it most helpful in applying the readings.
There is much of truth in nearly all of the “beliefs” and my advice would be to receive only that which answers to something within yourself, using as the pattern for your ideals, the life of Jesus.
Thanking you for your cooperation and hoping to be of further service, I am
Sincerely, [signed by mv] Edgar Cayce EC/mv
R9. 9/8/44 [3200]‘s letter:
Dear Mr. Cayce:
In answer to your letter of July 22 in regard to my check reading for October 26. The following is my report in regard to my condition and treatment to date. I hope I can answer all your questions satisfactorily.
First I discovered my illness May, 1940. I went to a Sanatorium and was immediately given pneumo-thorax treatment on both lungs. It was said according to X-ray, I had a cavity in the apex of both lungs. After one year treatment was discontinued on left side due to the fact that my lung would no longer stay collapsed. Then two phrenic nerve crushes were done to that side. That is when my stomach trouble began. The phrenic nerve regenerated and my diaphragm resumed it’s normal position in six months - after the first operation. My stomach then became perfectly normal, but within a few weeks they re-crushed the nerve and according to X-ray reports and the way I feel it did not regenerate or something happened because my diaphragm is still raised. It will be three years this coming February 14th that the second operation was performed. My stomach has been miserable ever since. After four years treatment was discontinued on the other lung as my X-ray showed that I no longer needed it.
When I wrote to you for a physical reading, I was sure that the operations they gave me were what was keeping me from feeling well. I had my reading September 1943 but did not start your treatments until November. I have been using the Apple Brandy fumes ever since. Also the Acigest in raw milk. although I don’t take the Acigest every day but about every other day for the past few months as I seem to feel better on that schedule. As for the diet and exercise I did the best that I was able. There are many days when I am unable to eat and therefore I rest because I do not feel up to going out doors.
You asked me why I returned to the doctors care. I really did not return but continued taking pneumo thorax on the remaining side. I had to get a refill every ten days. As soon as they told me I didn’t need them any longer, I never returned. Even though I was told to report back in a month. I feel that I have listened well enough and I feel much worse than when I began so I’ve had enough.
I would still like very much to be able to come to Virginia Beach for my reading. But I would not attempt to make the trip by bus or train and unless gas rationing is lifted it will be a problem coming by car. However I still have over a month and I’ll let you know. Please note a change of address, we are moving to … Street, …, Pa. within a few days. In case I can’t come down I will be at that address October 20th.
About the questions. I have none except to know what to do about stomach condition. It is hard to explain my symptoms in that regard. Its rather a pulsating nausea in a sometimes more or less severe manner. What I mean by that, it varies in it’s degree, sometimes I feel ALMOST normal but the least bit of excitement or nervousness brings it back very much. I do hope very much that you can help because I feel if you can’t, no one can.
In case Acigest is suggested again, please ask about a substitute that can be used when raw milk is not available. I have had trouble about it as it is illegal to sell it in Pennsylvania.
Sincerely yours Mrs. [3200]
P.S. I am sending for the booklet your suggested also one on Life readings. As soon as I get my health straightened out I would like a life reading as I feel that I have not really as yet “found myself.”
(Mrs.) [3200]
R10. 10/5/44 [3200]‘s letter: “Enclosed is $1.00 please send on Life and Physical Readings.”
R11. 10/20/44 (Friday) [3200]‘s letter:
Dear Mr. Cayce:
Up until the last moment I had hopes in being able to come to Virginia Beach for my reading due 26th of this month. But due to gas and war time restrictions I have had to give up the idea. But it is my dearest wish to come there some time to see you and thank you personally for what you have done for me. Also I still intend to help with the Sponsorship of your research department if I find myself in the position to do so. It’s the least I can do to show my gratefulness.
I will be at the last address I sent you in my last letter on the day of my reading. There is one more thing I want to add to my report. I missed in the last one. That is the fact that after my phrenic nerve operation the lower three or four ribs on that side (left) protruded quite noticeably. They are pushed out more in the front than the back. I would be very much relieved if they could be gotten back to their natural position, have a feeling it’s the seat of trouble.
Thanking you again for your help and kindness.
Sincerely, (Mrs.) [3200]
P.S. Have been feeling better and stronger the past few weeks than I have in years and I can give all the credit to you.
R12. 11/9/44 [3200]‘s letter:
Dear Mr. Cayce:
I received letter cancelling my appointment and containing refund for same. I was extremely sorry to hear of your illness and I hope you are well and doing your good work very soon. I will try to keep in touch with your organization via one of the Bulletins. I haven’t made up my mind as to which one as yet.
I wish to report that some of the symptoms that I had when I wrote asking for a check reading are disappearing and I feel in better health now than I have in years. People also remark on the improvement in my appearance since I’ve taken your treatments. No one would really believe I had been so ill. I’m going to continue the Apple Brandy until I can secure another reading from you. I only wish they would start using it in Sanatoriums in place of the operations they gave me. It sure is more effective and much more pleasant.
My most sincere wishes for your speedy recovery.
(Mrs.) [3200]
R13. 4/17/45 [3200]‘s letter:
Dear Mr. Cayce:
I am writing you concerning the appointment I had for a reading October 26, 1944. As you know it was cancelled because of your illness. I was instructed to write again in six to eight months, I am doing so now hoping that you will be able to honor my request. I am interested in having a “Life Reading” instead this time, with a “Physical Check” later on. In my first reading you mentioned that much would be gained by an astrological reading and I have felt ever since that I should have one. Please let me know if it is possible for you to give me a Life and Check reading.
Very sincerely yours, [3200]
Background
Background
B1. 5/4/43 Letter: “I have taken treatment in a Tuberculosis Sanatorium in Penna. for 3 yrs. and have shown much improvement as far as the disease is concerned. However, something is retarding my progress as far as gaining strength and a feeling of well-being. What it is the doctors do not know and I am quite perplexed. After 3 yrs. of being waited upon by others I feel as tho I should be a help instead of a liability and am ever so anxious to do my bit especially at this time.”
B2. 8/9/43 She submitted these questions:
- Do I need any further treatment for my lung condition, other than I have already had?
- Should present treatment be continued?
- Is there anything wrong with my physical condition other than tuberculosis?
- If so, what? and what can I do to correct it?
- Is the condition in my lungs active or inactive?
- How can I regain strength and gain weight?
