-
GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes, we have the body, [3207].
-
As we find, unless there can be the persuasion through suggestion in or from the spiritual approach, little may be done to arouse this body from the lethargy into which it has purposely driven itself.
-
To be sure there are pathological disturbances, but these arise more from the psychological or psychopathic conditions than from the purely physical condition. To be sure there are incoordinations between the cerebrospinal and the sympathetic systems. These are nerve lapses. And these may be aided. But the real basis of the aid must come from spiritual suggestion.
-
While ordinarily they would not combine, these two sources offer the greater help that may be obtained - and all should learn the lesson that the law of the Lord is perfect, the Lord is one.
-
Suggestions should be made from purely the spiritual angle, in conjunction with purely mechanical applications. These, if practiced in this particular case would bring relief.
-
Then: Prepare the low Wet Cell Appliance, to carry Gold in the body - the proportions being one grain Chloride of Gold Sodium to each ounce of distilled water.
-
The charge should be medium strength; that is, to the gallon and a half of distilled water, add - in the order named:
Copper Sulphate…2 lbs., Sulfuric Acid, C.P…1 1/4 ounces, Zinc…1 dram & 30 grains, Willow Charcoal…1/2 lb.
-
Make the application each day for thirty minutes. Attach the large plate, through which the Gold Solution passes vibratorially at the umbilical and lacteal duct plexus; that is four fingers from the navel center to the right and two fingers up from that point. The copper plate would be attached at the ninth dorsal.
-
Each day when the Appliance is removed give the body a gentle massage along the spine, using either an oil or a powder - just something that will make the massage easier. Commence at the ninth dorsal and massage upward. Then commence at the ninth dorsal and massage downward, along the spine particularly; this merely to make distribution through the nerve plexus and centers especially in the lymph circulation.
-
Also have a Christian Science Reader with the body as an attendant, a companion, who would continue to make suggestions; first for the awakening to possibilities in the outdoors, in nature, in things of Creative activity.
-
And we will find we may supply the breaking up of the nerve forces in this body. This will prevent the deterioration or the regular conditions that ordinarily arise when such melancholy becomes a part of the experience.
-
DO that - if we would make the better conditions.
-
We are through with this reading.

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 9/28/43 [3207]‘s mother’s letter to EC:
”…I received your reading of my son and feel that perhaps there is little hope of recovery. I engaged a Christian Science healer, but do not feel that I can use, personally, the mechanical applications and that no one else here would be willing to. [3207] has had the highest medical aid, and with strangers he seems normal and laughs and jokes, but with us - his family, he says a thousand times a day, ‘I wish I were dead. Kill me, Mother.’ And it is heartbreaking. Only God knows the answer. Thanking you… Do you have healers connected with your work? Do they give the applications, too?”
R2. 10/13/43 EC’s letter to [3207]‘s mother:
”…I have yours of the 28th. If it is at all possible, do give the suggestions for the young man. I believe you will find help. We have a Prayer Meeting Group that are the healers, and if you wish his name put on the prayer list, write to Mrs. T. W. Morrow, 3216 Verdune Ave., Norfolk, Virginia, and we can put it on for the three periods we hold each day if you like…”
Background
Background
B1. 6/1/43 [3207]‘s mother’s letter to EC: ”…I have just finished reading Thomas Sugrue’s story of your God-given power to heal, and prayerfully I come to you in my own son’s case. [3207] was born in 1905 in Paris, France of a French father and an American mother - a perfectly normal child, timid but getting through school and college as any average young man - born of musical parents; his one bent was music
- singing and violin - but he did not succeed in either as a professional. He worked two years in a music store, lost his job, married and after five years his wife left him for another man which resulted in his trying to take his life by monoxide gas. He had a complete nervous breakdown…was in a sanitarium one year; was another year recovering and remained well for five years. In ‘41 he showed signs of another nervous attack, but a trip south on a small boat seemed to benefit him until he went all to pieces and into a sanitarium for another year. I have him with me now. He eats and sleeps well, meets people and SEEMS normal but has obsessions, first one and then another and keeps saying, ‘I am no good, Mother.’
“Would you give him a reading? I feel certain that there is some pressure that causes these spells. He is six feet [tall], well formed and of dark complexion, a very charming young man, but really AFRAID to meet the world. Doctors do not seem to understand his case. He is religious and told me quite frankly that the only thing that ‘saved’ him this time was prayer…”
B2. 6/20/43 [3207]‘s mother’s letter to EC:
”…Up to five years ago he was a normal, fine, happy young man. His wife deserting him caused him to attempt suicide, but after a year he was alright again and for five years, until he was rejected from the Army. He is very depressed, talks of suicide, as an accident, so as not to cause me trouble, asks my permission to allow this to free him from this troubled mind. He eats and sleeps well and meets people as you and I would, but drops back into his tragic state and often drops his head as though there was something wrong. He has been with me two months, after a year in a sanitarium, and much prefers death to a return there. You will have to decide which reading fits his case. I am doing all in my power to give him help. I hope the reading can be soon, as I live in constant dread that he may take his life…”
B3. 6/28/43 [3207]‘s mother’s letter to EC:
”…He seems so well until he talks and then it is always, ‘Mother, I can’t live with myself any longer. I’m no good - perhaps the next world will give me a chance.’ He says this over and over, often to himself in an undertone; he mumbles all the time. There must be some hidden reason for this that they have not discovered. He has a way of shaking his head that leads me to believe the trouble is mental. ‘I am no good’ he will always say when questioned. His one concern is my welfare and peace of mind, and he thinks by doing away with himself he will free me from all worry. I cannot erase this idea from his mind. I am holding the thought that he will not try again to do away with his life - and I accept the September 11th appointment…”
B4. 9/9/43 [3207]‘s mother’s letter to EC:
”…As the time approaches for a reading for my son, [3207],
- September 11th, 10:30 to 11:30, I wish to inform you that his condition is about the same - extremely depressed and wanting to die. He talks of his condition, realizing it and wondering why he can’t snap out of it. He says ‘if I could only bore a hole in my head and shake out something.’ His one fear is that he is wearing me out with his constant complaining. He has been with me since April; eats and sleeps well but always talking of ‘escape’ from his condition. He is 37, six feet [tall], cultured and educated, a dear, wonderful boy. Please God, you can find the reason of his trouble so that we may help heal him…”
