This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 17th day of September, 1943, in accordance with request made by the self - Mr. [3218], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research and Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by the book, THERE IS A RIVER.

Time of Reading 10:50 to 11:00 A. M. Eastern War Time. …, Conn.

1. GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them:

2. EC: Yes, we have the body here, [3218].

3. As we find, there are disturbing conditions, and this is a form of deterioration in the structural portion of the bone itself, that causes pressures that hinder in the general condition of the body and the locomotory centers of the lower limbs specifically.

4. We find that these will be the means for the greater help. This condition may not be relieved entirely, but this depends much upon the attitude of the entity and its purposes and its hopes.

5. Three times each week, in the beginning use the Ultra-Violet Ray, the Mercury Light (not the Carbon Lamp, but the Mercury Quartz Light). Use this only with the projection of the green glass between the Mercury Light and the area covered - which would be the whole area from the 9th dorsal to the base of the spine. Have the Ultra-Violet about 42 inches from the body, and the green glass about 14 inches from the body. An ordinary piece of plate glass may be used, about 10 by 12 inches. Apply for not more than a minute or minute and a half in the beginning.

6. Follow each treatment with a gentle massage with oils, all the body will absorb; using this mixture:

Peanut Oil…2 ounces, Olive Oil…1 ounce, Lanolin (Liquefied)…1 teaspoonful.

Only massage gently the area from the 9th dorsal to the end of the spine and then along the area of the sciatic nerves - all the body will absorb. It will be found that some days the body will absorb much more than others; this depending upon the reactions that are retained in the body. But each period take the time to give the massage, using all the oil that will absorb.

7. In the diet, - add those things that supply more silicon [silicone?] and the elements for structural portions. Hence each week we would take a small quantity of Calcios, as this is the form in which calcium may be better assimilated. About twice each week, say Tuesdays and Fridays, preferably at the noon meal, eat a whole wheat cracker, spread lightly with Calcios.

8. Also use plenty of turnips, turnip greens, carrots and beets, yellow potatoes or yams (sweet potatoes), the bony pieces of fish and fowl. In canned fish, where bones are included, eat these - those that are soft, of course. Prepare the small pieces of fowl and eat the ends of the bones - especially the feet and the like. Also pigs feet, (not pickled) would be well.

9. These add to the diet of the body.

10. Do these and we will bring the better conditions; not entire recovery unless there is the attitude for the trust entirely in spiritual healing. Then it may be possible, yes - for, with all applications, the good of same is divine.

R1. 9/27/43 [3218]‘s letter to EC:

“I want to thank you most sincerely for the reading you gave me and the hope that it brings. The instructions given will certainly be followed as exactly as we are able and as soon as possible. Finding a Mercury-Quartz Lamp now is not easy, but I think I can obtain a GE sun lamp. The latter, I’m assured, provides the same treatment, only it takes five times longer.

“Your reading brings hope such as I have not had since I was told that no treatment was known by doctors. And the book, THERE IS A RIVER instilled complete confidence in me of the rightness of your readings.

“Thank you again very much. I’ll write you later about a check reading…”

R2. 10/9/43 EC’s letter to Mr. [3218]:

“Replying to yours of the 27th, I am glad to know that you are pleased with your reading, and I do hope you will find real help when you carry out the suggestions given. The sun lamp, however, is not the same as the Mercury Light. It does not give the same radiation to the body, but you can do it if you like. But that will not be following the information. I am sure it is possible to obtain the Mercury Light, and when the information makes the variations in the suggestion, it is better to follow the suggestion than to try something else. Do let us hear from you from time to time. Know we are very glad to help if we possibly can…”

R3. 6/29/44 [3218]‘s letter to EC:

“My wife didn’t want me to send the enclosed letter to you because she thought it was too blunt, that it didn’t reveal the confidence I have in you nor appreciation of your great gift.

“But I think you will be interested in the letter and will realize that by my writing it, I do have utmost confidence in you regardless of the lack of results from your reading. I am sure a check reading will set things straight.

“Anyway, read the enclosed letter because in it I’m trying to tell you why I need your help. And do believe me, I’ll appreciate a Check Physical reading enormously. Doctors admit that they don’t know what should be done, but I am confident you can tell me. I want to remain a self-supporting useful citizen and not become a drag on my family and the community…”

“P.S. $10.00 is enclosed to pay for Check reading.

“I should appreciate very much having a Check Physical reading. You gave me the first reading, as you will remember on Friday, September 17, 1943. Unfortunately things have not gone at all well. For two long extended periods I followed the recommendations of your reading. Each time I stopped them because the use of my legs was adversely affected. Several doctors have told me that I have multiple sclerosis and to avoid sun and heat. I know heat is bad because on warm days the ability to use my legs is so badly affected, that I can’t go to work. (Other days my wife drives me to General Electric and I manage to walk the two hundred steps to my desk with the aid of a cane.)

“When your reading found a bone condition, I thought here at last was something that could be taken care of, that the doctors were wrong. Under ordinary circumstances I would have questioned the Ultra-Violet Lamp, but I was sure your reading was right and anyway, light from those lamps is cool. Maybe I do have this bone condition. Maybe ultra-violet and the oils have helped. Apparently, however, the bone condition is not causing the lack of motive nerve control in my legs. My walking ability was worse following the treatments recommended in your reading.

“I’ve wondered if it were possible that you didn’t locate me and make a reading on some other person in the … offices. They are large offices, cover a lot of floors and house many men and women. Therefore, if it were possible for you to make a Check reading during the period July 17 to July 31, it could be made while I am home. (I am on vacation during that period and will be home regardless of the weather.) I hope you can. Of course, I can arrange to be at home at some later time if you would rather. I’m suggesting the vacation period because warm weather makes me lose so much time, that I hate to stay away from the office if it can be avoided.

“I am confident that a Check reading will set things straight. Your giving it for me will be greatly appreciated and I am sure will help me…”

“P.S. I don’t know whether you want me to ask questions for a Check reading or not, but on the chance you do, I list the following:

1. Why were the results of the first reading harmful rather than helpful?
2. WHAT CAN BE DONE TO HELP MY BONES OR NERVES OR WHATNOT SO THAT I CAN WALK MORE NORMALLY? (Now I must use a cane and balance myself against walls, etc.)
3. What can I do to make my walking ability in warm weather as good, even as it is in cool weather?
4. I have trouble evacuating. This seems connected with the nerve-bone trouble. Can you suggest any help?”

R4. 7/12/44 EC’s letter to [3218]:

“In accord with your letter of June 29, we are making an appointment for your Check Physical reading on the afternoon of September 4, 1944, between the hour of 3:30 and 4:30, EWT. We are sorry it cannot be sooner, but it is the best we can do when so many are asking for help.

“We are sorry that you seem to be having trouble with your first reading. Our long experience with the results of these leads us to wonder why, in this instance, you do not seem to be improving. Our letter to you on October 9, 1943 indicates that you were having trouble in obtaining the proper lamp, and we would like to hear from you as to whether you were able to follow the treatments exactly as suggested. It is possible that some slight discrepancy in your following of these has caused the difficulty. Did you vary in any way from the preparation of the lamp as given in the reading? The green glass is of most importance.

“Remember to let us know about three weeks in advance, where you will be - exact address - during the hour of your appointment, and if you wish any changes made in the questions you have submitted.

“Also, let us have a complete report or history of your case to date. This is very important for our research work.

“Have you read our pamphlet ‘Physical Readings’? It was compiled for the very purpose of helping you to better understand and apply the reading you will receive.

“Do keep the period of your appointment as a quiet hour of prayer and meditation.

“Hoping to be of real service…”

R5. 8/5/44 [3218]‘s letter to EC:

“Thank you very much indeed for the Check Physical reading appointment you have given me for September 4, in the afternoon. I realize the demands made upon your time, and therefore I appreciate the appointment all the more. I shall be right here at …, Connecticut. We live on the first floor of a two family house.

“The recommendations of your reading were followed for two periods, until each time my walking ability began to be worse than it was. I used a General Electric Type S 4 sun lamp in place of the quartz mercury lamp you recommended. The Type S 4 lamp consists of a small quartz mercury arc mounted in a bulb of ultraviolet transmitting glass. It produces all of the ultra-violet rays produced by the quartz mercury lamps with the exception of the short rays; that is, it produces rays between 2800 and 3200 angstrom units. This lamp seemed to offer all of the advantages of the lamp you recommended, was easier for me to get and was not as dangerous to use. Real sunshine affects the use of my legs, and so does heat of any kind. I had great hopes, however, that the ultra-violet on only my back and the oils massaged gently in would be helpful. It was not. The lamp was used with the green glass obtained from the American Plate and Window Glass Company in East Orange, New Jersey. Calcios was also used as directed.

“The history of my case from its beginning is enclosed.

“Thank you again for the reading you will do for me shortly. I look forward to it to put me on the right path, and for real help.

“Enclosed is fifty cents for the booklet on Physical readings…”

R6. 8/5/44 Physical history of [3218] submitted:

DECEMBER, 1926: At age 27 right hand suddenly numb, right leg also numb, somewhat hard to lift right foot and to walk. General doctor found nothing wrong; offered no help.

JULY, 1927: Situation cleared, but was examined by Life Extension Institute in New York. Was sent to clinic at Neurological Institute. Spine x-rayed; spinal fluid and blood tested. Diagnosis not given me. Massage treatment given.

JULY, 1928: Trouble returned to some extent. In Boston, saw Dr. Ayres, neurologist and professor at Harvard Medical School. Said I had a rare nerve condition for which neither cause nor cure was known. It would come and go but tend to get worse. Would never cause death by itself.

1928 - LATER: Saw the late Dr. Frederick Tilney, neurologist and professor at Columbia Medical School. He confirmed Dr. Ayres’s finding. Said I had multiple sclerosis.

1929 - SUMMER: Walking became difficult; used cane. Soon cleared up.

DECEMBER, 1932: Walking became practically impossible. Dr. Kate Constable, who was Dr. Tilney’s assistant, gave spinal irrigation at Neurological Institute. Good results, lasting until summer of 1934. Given more spinal irrigations at that time, but they were not of much help.

1934: Given treatment to rid my system of lead. Not helpful.

1935 - SUMMER: Started using cane. Walking very difficult.

1936 - JANUARY: Operation on the sympathetic nerve of right side. Not helpful except immediately afterward.

1936 - AUTUMN: Brace for right leg. Massive doses of Vitamin B prescribed.

1937 - SUMMER: To the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Diagnosis, multiple sclerosis. Stopped driving the car at this time.

1937 - AUTUMN: Dr. Constable started me taking Vitamin E in addition to Vitamin B. Walking difficult all the time, now, but worse in summer. Note: Regardless of how difficult it has been for me to walk in cool weather, in summer it has always been worse.

1943 - AUGUST: Reading by Mr. Edgar Cayce. Recommended ultra-violet. Not helpful.

R7. 9/10/44 GD’s letter to [3218]:

“The enclosed Notice will help to explain why your reading, scheduled for September 4, was not given.

“We regret the disappointment and inconvenience that this must have caused you, but since we do not know on what day Mr. Cayce will be able to resume the giving of readings, it has not been possible for us to notify anyone in advance of the date of their expected appointment.

“In reading over your correspondence, it is quite evident that you are not getting the results you would expect. We have had several cases where conditions were similar to yours, and in each instance, where the suggestions were followed implicitly, with NO DEVIATION in any respect, satisfactory results were obtained.

“In view of this, and because your case is so serious, we feel that unless it is possible for you to follow each and every suggestion in exact detail - no matter how trivial it may seem - perhaps it would be better not to attempt any part of it.

“We have not as yet assigned you a new appointment, and would like to know your wishes in the matter. We must tell you that, due to the great number of cancellations, in addition to promises made before this emergency arose, it may be more than a year before another one can be given.

“Hoping for your consideration and understanding…”

R8. 9/18/44 [3218]‘s wife’s letter to GD:

“Thank you for your letter of September 10. It was kind of you to write, instead of just sending us the announcement, and we do appreciate it.

“My prayers include a petition for Mr. Cayce’s swift and complete recovery which will enable him to carry on his immensely important task of helping suffering human beings who need the help which only he is able to give.

“You see, because so many physicians have TOLD me, and INTIMATED to my husband that multiple sclerosis was an incurable and a progressive malady, I know what it is to be denied all REASON to hope, yet I have gone on hoping when there seemed to be no hope. My faith seemed justified when I read Mr. Sugrue’s book, telling of Mr. Cayce’s triumph over disease which physicians had despaired of.

“People in our, my husband’s and my position, are accustomed to having our hopes dashed, but never quite killed. We live on hope deferred. Just because my husband has not seemed to make progress under treatment given in the first reading does not mean that the READING is at fault, nor that WE are at fault. It means that somewhere along the line, our interpretation of the reading has been in error, and I believe that the Check reading will set us straight. I believe, and my husband believes, that Mr. Cayce can help him, and I do not believe that, if God spares Mr. Cayce to many more years of service to humanity, Mr. Cayce will refuse to do all in his power to help my husband. I do not think that Mr. Cayce will be willing to have my husband drag out another year while waiting for his help.

“I believe that something has been wrong with the lamp that we have been using, but I believe that Mr. Cayce, in a Check reading can tell us what it is, and how to rectify our mistake. We have followed every suggestion as to the treatment: green glass just so far from the body, the oils in massage, the diet, the Calcios, implicitly. Our mistake was in not asking for a Check reading sooner. But my husband felt that we had not given the treatment enough time. Now, if the Check reading could tell us exactly what sort of lamp to use, (or even whether the lamp we bought and have used was at fault) and whether, if, under present wartime conditions we are unable to obtain the correct kind, then where we might have the treatments given, (or is that asking too much even of the seemingly miraculous river which Mr. Cayce taps)? And then my husband’s bowels are giving him much distress, and I wonder if the reading could tell us what to do or to have done for that. These two points are the ones I should like to have cleared up, but my husband’s letter with his case history had some more, I think.

“I am also eager to have a life reading for my husband, and one for myself, and wonder if that would not be another way of approach to our problem. Of course, I quite see that life readings are superceded in importance by the physical readings, and I suppose it may be rather a long time before Mr. Cayce can get to them, but if the pressure ever lifts so that he can find time for Life readings, please let me know what information he needs.

“My hope is that when the war ends my husband may see Mr. Cayce.

“My husband is a brilliant person whom people really love, but he is, at the age of forty-five, still writing advertising copy like any youngster just out of college. If he had the ability to be MOBILE, he would be an important force for good in the world. As matters are, he sits at his desk at the Plant (and no one who has not gone through it will know the sheer physical effort it is for him to pull his heavy stiff body along just to get to and from his desk) from 7:30 A.M. until 6:10 P.M. EVERY day of the year, save Saturday afternoons, Sundays, Christmas Day, and a two week vacation. The office force is on the same wartime schedule as the factory, which means that he works every day, all day, even the fourth of July, Labor Day, New Year’s, etc. It is a routine which is hard on even the men in perfect health. He does not complain, but when I get him at night his face is grey with fatigue. He weighs 132 pounds, and is six feet tall. He is tired all of the time, but determined. He is determined not to be more of a burden to anyone that he need be, and he has courage of the highest order. I feel that it is right for him to carry on his work as long as possible. I agree with him in that, for while he takes his place in the world as the breadwinner for the family he feels that he is necessary, a part of the living and not of the dead. I think he feels that if he had to stop work, life might just as well end.

“But every move in our life is thought out ahead and planned for. There can be no extemporizing as we go along, and if one of the jigsaw pieces of our plans falls out, the whole carefully built structure collapses. For example, going to his barber, or to his dentist, or to his optometrist are all as carefully thought out to the last detail as an expedition to Africa, and if it is a very hot day or a rainy or icy or snowy one, the whole expedition must be abandoned.

“This has been a very long letter, and I hope that I haven’t seemed too much of a nuisance to you, but I do want you to see that our need is desperate, and we are clinging to Mr. Cayce in a hope almost too big to be put into words. I pray that he may help us soon…”

R9. 5/14/45 [3218]‘s letter to GD: “Last September you wrote my wife that it was impossible to give me an appointment for a Check reading by Mr. Cayce because of the latter’s ill health. You cashed my check and suggested that I write later.

“I hope Mr. Cayce is feeling better now and will be able to give me the Check reading that was originally promised…”

R10. 5/18/45 GD returned [3218]‘s check, and sent forms, sample DL and WRE.

B1. 6/28/43 Letter: “In December, 1926, something attacked the motor nerves in my legs. Walking was impaired briefly, then I seemed to be all right. But as time went on, my legs got worse. Now I have great difficulty in walking at all. More or less by accident, I have consulted doctors of unquestioned ability - a Harvard neurologist, a Columbia neurologist, doctors at the Mayo Clinic. They all admit they don’t know what actually causes the trouble, and therefore have not been able to treat it effectively. Several things have been tried without good results.”

B3. 8/24/43 Letter: “All of these questions sum up to the one big question, which is all dominant: What can be done so that I can walk normally again?”
