This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 24th day of September, 1943, in accordance with request made by the self - Miss [3237], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by the book, THERE IS A RIVER.

Born February 9, 1889, 5:00 A. M., in Jamaica Plains, Boston, Mass. Time of Reading 3:45 to 4:10 P. M. Eastern War Time. …, N.Y.

1. GC: You will give the relations of this entity and the universe, and the universal forces; giving the conditions which are as personalities, latent and exhibited in the present life; also the former appearances in the earth plane, giving time, place and the name, and that in each life which built or retarded the development for the entity; giving the abilities of the present entity, that to which it may attain, and how. You will answer the questions, as I ask them:

2. EC: Yes, we have the records here of that entity now calling itself [3237].

3. In giving and interpretation of the records for this entity, these we choose with the desire and purpose that this be a helpful experience for the entity; enabling the entity to better fulfill those purposes for which it entered this sojourn.

4. In analyzing this we would minimize the faults and yet point sufficient of these to be interpreted for beneficial activities in the experience. And we would magnify the virtues that they, too, may be glorified in the activities in the earth.

5. In giving a composite of astrological activities and the earthly sojourns of the entity, these we find the characteristics - which the entity may even now do something about:

6. The entity finds itself well adapted for many things, yet it has rarely made a real success of anything; starting many and never finishing.

7. The entity has abilities in music, in writing, in composition, in analyzing for those who do such as datasticians’ work. In these the entity may accomplish much if there would be the holding to same, carrying it entirely through.

8. At times the entity has a great deal of inspirational feelings, yet these have often been attempted to be used personally, or to personalize same. This has blocked much that might have been, or even yet may be accomplished by the entity.

9. In analyzing then, we will find that Mercury, Mars, Venus, Jupiter, and Saturn are all a part of the innate consciousness of the entity.

10. One that likes to be active, keeping very busy, yet by most people the entity would be called quite neglectful of those things that it ought to do; busying self with things - always starting something as indicated by Mars.

11. As changes are soon to come, when Mars is in the background, then - beginning next month, or the next at least, or before the fifteenth of next April - write the story of your life. You can make of it not only a good article but it may be drawn into a great article that would give the entity some prestige.

12. In Venus we find the music and color and beauty that are a part of the entity’s experience, yet these sort of come and go, as of periods when the entity is over-active in same. Yet in these, in music especially, the entity might accomplish much.

13. The Jupiterian forces the entity may use to the advantage of self or to the abuse of self in its relationships with others. But know - as in Mercury, as in Jupiter, - judgement is to be used. Do the first things first. Seek the spiritual life, in and through the mental application of same. Live it, not profess it alone. Let the activities, the deeds of the body, speak rather than the words of the mouth; and we will find more of those things really sought by the entity may be accomplished.

14. In giving the appearances in the earth, - not all will be given here, but these may indicate that which has been the trend of the entity.

15. Before this the entity was in the earth during the early settlings in the present land, when there were the needs for keeping data, and keeping accounts between the early settlers in the land.

16. The entity, in the name Ethel Cowper, was among those that were the record keepers, and taught those activities in the schools that were begun during that experience; thus becoming an active one throughout that sojourn - yet always trying to keep everyone else busy.

17. Before that the entity was in the Grecian land when they had overrun many other lands to the east. These made for disturbances in the own household, with the political factions that arose among the groups of Xenophon’s activity.

18. The entity was active in those measures in which each would be accountable to various groups that might be set.

19. Thus we find those intents, and purposes in the activities of the entity, in which it sets certain groupings and certain activities into certain categories of things that are to be and yet no other one would set them in the same basis of activity.

20. Then known as Cleoantey, the entity was active in mental and spiritual ways for advancement, pertaining to the abilities to communicate with, to call upon, to attune self to infinite measures of strength or purposes, or infinite time. These become a part of the entity’s experience in the present. Use same, don’t abuse same.

21. Before that the entity was in the land of Saad during those periods when there were associations and connections with the Egyptian land, and the land of the Rising Sun, or the Golden Land now known as those portions of Indo-China and those activities there.

22. The entity became an emissary that was to go from the land of Saad to the various groups, to copy their activities or to make notes on same and carry back to its own land. There the entity succeeded well.

23. Thus as may be indicated in writing, in music, there may be greater expression in the present. But writing should be the main activity, and through which material gains may be had, as well as contributing something to the thought or purpose of individual groups - if the entity will express itself in that way or manner.

24. Music would be used more to attune self to the infinite. Trust not in self but rather in Him who may give thee in spirit and in truth the way, and the open way for the better understanding.

25. Ready for questions.

26. (Q) Regarding my teaching work in […, N.Y.] - are there certain procedures which would help hasten the decision regarding a pension credit of several years? (A) This may be according to routine, or it may be set aside, according to the needs of conditions arising in the school.

27. (Q) I am never happier than when I have a pencil in my hand, yet seem to have no special gift. Is there such a thing as inspirational writing for me? (A) As given these are the channels through which there may be the greater expression. Begin same before the fifteenth of October, or be sure to begin before the fifteenth of April - but it should be completed between those periods.

28. (Q) What is the explanation of the experience I had several years back when one night some compulsion brought me out of bed - mistaking doors I walked out into space, down a 7-step staircase. Floating down in a semi-conscious state like a dancer, near the bottom, as waking consciousness began to dominate, that which sustained my body seemed to leave me and I sank quickly onto the floor. All during the experience there seemed to be no fear until that moment of consciousness when I wondered ‘why’? (A) This as we find was an experience of the soul-entity; that is of the other self in the Grecian activities just indicated, when there were the preparations and the activities that were a portion of the entity’s expression in the land of Saad, in meeting with those peoples of the land of the Golden Sun. These are, then, as past experiences. These are not as a dream - in a dream, yes - but a real experience of the other self or the real self in that through which it had passed.

29. (Q) Is it possible through this approach to interpret the dream I had sometime ago in which I was upon a sea wall high above a reaching sea and beach, and in which I had the experience of holding a small white bird while another big bird sat on the opposite wall watching? (A) All of these are the same. These may be brought back to self, if there is the giving of self wholly to the writing. Not that called automatic writing but in periods of meditation when moved by the spirit to write, write. Keep on writing, whether you ever feel that one is good enough or not - but one of self and its experiences would be worth something!

30. (Q) Is it indicated that I will ever recover the valuable ring which I lost about 10 yrs. ago? (A) We haven’t the ring.

31. (Q) What have been my associations in the past with […] who has ‘slipped the bonds of earth’? Does he have any suggestion for me? (A) We haven’t […].

R1. 1/29/44 [3237]‘s letter:

To-day, the 1944 Research Bulletin was on my door step as I came from work. I was particularly in need of just what this record holds; sheet 3 paragraph 4 ‘a new member finds his first reading a strange document’!!

It made me realize what I should have weeks ago, that you welcome contact with your friends…that you stand ready to analyze…that you do expect reactions. #3 on that same page I will speak of later.

On the reading of this January Bulletin I went back to my ‘Research Ass’n’ files and took out the Sept. 1943 reading for which I had waited so eagerly.

It is now about 4 months since my Life Reading…

At that time, I read it…and sat looking at it with so keen a sense of incompleteness that I laid it away, a mistake I now believe. The impression ‘much is left out’ was so keen that it left me with a sense of bereftness.

That you do have an answer for this I feel sure, somehow, somewhere.

I am now rereading it and the rereading has left that same incompleteness tempered a bit by the bulletin and the comment on first readings.

Certain paragraphs, the last one on the first page [Par. 6] ‘The entity, adapted for many things…rarely makes a real success…starting…never finishing.’ True-true-true…and one of the many weak spots in my character that now after a life-time, I have been concentrating upon purposefully.

[Par. 7] What is the connotation of ‘datasticians’. I thought that perhaps statistician might be meant… I have to confess Mr. Cayce that figures as such are completely confusin’ to me. I even pay bills twice sometimes. Did you ever hear of anything so simple?

[Par. 8] If this could be made clearer, for I truly have never, in the years back, been aware of inspirational tendencies nor of having personalized same…and we must no longer let one single thing block ‘what can be accomplished’. What you say later on about my interest and work in phases of the superconscious, over soul in another life, fills me with a deep, deep joy in this present moment, and makes me understand why I feel such joy in this field of investigation, such a sense of being on the Path.

[Par. 10] Always in periods of stress I have thrown myself into things driven myself relentlessly - senselessly many times I can now see. You see I have no capacity for making lasting contacts…that lack of ability to adjust, I am beginning to feel, in the light of my study and reading of Psychic things, has been for some inscrutable process, karma being fulfilled. Always such a deep seated sense of impermanence…one becomes a spectator of one’s actions…a standing aside in the midst of a crowd. Three years ago…a door opened…a philosophy pointing to the continuity of life

• survival - swept into my heart. It was a fitting together of the pieces of me, so that in a very real sense I am born again and for the first time in my long life there was a purpose ahead and best of all there has been a purpose in all the sad, tragic, restless, time in the past. The remainder of this brief span we call life is to be spent in finding myself in spirit and in truth.

[Par. 11] Write the story of my life? ‘What nonsense’ came into my thought like flash. Even to-day 3 months later, I look at that 5th par. with utter disbelief - for heaven’s sake, say I, I can’t hardly bear to think of yesterday much less spend hours in the agony of remembering the definitions I have learned from living. They are not academic, dictionary terms to me… I’ve lived them.

In a sense I am through with the yesterday forever. I have to be - Life ahead is so completely full. Already in the realization of ‘everlasting life’ I am possessed of treasure which ‘rust does not corrupt nor thieves break in to steal’. You see I wouldn’t want to live it over again, the yesterday…to write it seems a great and awful penance. Since I have begun to accept all of life as a process of development of the essence of me which is spirit…and expiation a necessity… I believe the hurt, the confusion, the seeming utter wastefulness and the futility, the helplessness have been but the grinding of a channel deep and strong enuff for the flow of infinite love to spread healing over the land…where before there had been devastation.

Today ‘a table spread before me’ has rich fare indeed. The years of insecurity and fear shall be a help, not a hindrance, in knowing the wisdom of ‘thy will’. Goodness, its as simple as that…and as vast as all eternity. No price was too high to pay for the realization of that.

[Par. 19] Could this be clarified…

[Par. 21] ‘Then known as Cleoantey’ what is the derivation of that name, its meaning, and it is this paragraph to which I referred earlier in this letter. It strengthens the deep yearning to be after the spirit’s business and holds a deep joy to know that I have been close - and a great sadness that I had been lost for a while. Yet the end of that paragraph ‘use same, don’t abuse same’ leaves me weighed down. In the rest of this moment on earth for me, not wittingly would I abuse a growing awareness of ‘things invisible and unseen’. I want that transition into ‘the unobstructed universe’ made glorious by as much preparation as there is possible to build the capacity for. Please set a clearer marking in the channel for me to follow.

The reference to the Indo-China struck a deep bell-like note from a far away and a long ago place. French Indo-China and Angor Thom and Angor Vat!! those mysteriously glorious group of buildings long, long lost, jealously guarded until the time was set two or more decades ago, for their discovery and slow reclaiming from from the tenacious jungle growth of centuries. A mystery people leaving an amazing record in stone for man to find - yet a silence not yet fathomed as to the race, the people that built and lived in their beauty. People so well advanced in architecture, it would not be taking too much for granted that they were advanced along all lines. Vanished - a whole race of people - who knows what time - what curious set of circumstances yet to be will roll away that curtain of silence and bring them into being for us.

Atlantis sinking to a low level - were these folk whose record is hidden, swept up to a new level? Upon some advance star are they following newer and greater plans!

So, back to the Jan. ‘44 Bulletin because of which this letter is the result. On sheet 3 item 4 ‘the new member finds his first reading a strange document’. As you know now, after reading this far, strange is, curiously enuff, just the word that explains how I felt, and when I came to where it said in ‘interpretation we would minimize the faults,’ I found myself saying why should they be minimized, what are they leaving out which perhaps just what I need and don’t they think I have the courage to face truth.

You see, from your book and from the bulletins I had become accustomed to more detail… I was left with the wide gaps which I have no compass for. So I am coming to the Chief Navigator for an explanatory note on the compass reading he has been given about me.

Do you know that the magazine Coronet has a monthly article concerning extra sensory experiences, that the Liberty Magazine on Feb. 4 has an article about Lord Dowding, former RAF chief of England. This article uses the word Spiritualism which I do not like preferring the all-encompassing, comprehensive term ‘Survivalism’.

Sheet 3 #3 of the Bulletin ‘Writing up research data’ - What can I do for you along these lines and from long distance. I feel confident that in some way I can be of a real service to the foundation in just such assembling.

Financially - these past two years of tax adjustment and an almost static salary makes a very close kind of figuring necessary to meet the budget. But when we have been on the pay-as-you-go for a year and the long fought for raise does? materialize next Sept. the year should be easier and will show a bit of abundance that will be shared.

I am particularly interested in the field of healing, and now you must tell me where I can be of service; how I can meet some of your clerical needs; what can I do to help meet the ever increasing load you are facing in material accumulations. Say the word and we will adjust and fit into some kind of working program for you. Just ahead of me there will be a long summer in which I could devote much time to the Assn.

I am glad that I have written this letter. I do hope sincerely that it will not be an added burden or sound complicated. All of it springs from the need of seeing straight and acting wisely in this ‘way of life’ that I am rediscovering.

So good days, peaceful days of abundance along this glorious road you have been chosen to travel.

R2. 2/5/44 EC’s letter to [3237]:

I have yours of the 29th, and note what you have to say about the reading. I think your experience has been the experience of about seven out of ten of every individual who was not prepared for the type of information that is given in the Life Reading. Yet I believe every person, if they take the time to try to analyze what has been said, will find the readings to be one of the most interesting pieces of paper that they ever studied. I know the readings are fantastic in the nature yet the basic truths that are there go so deep that individuals, many of them are just as illustrated in our experience with some of the first ones ever given. In 1924 I met a gentleman who is the head of the advertising department of what is supposed to be the most ideal manufacturing organization possibly in the world, a man who has been a student for years and years. He had a Life Reading and a Physical reading for himself, his wife and son with marvelous results. It was the sixth reading of that type I had ever given. I was not sure of myself, that I even believed in the theory. I asked him to critize [criticize] it. He wrote me almost immediately. “Well, the Physical readings are wonderful. The Life Readings are a bit fantastic. I don’t think there is anything in them.”

I wrote and asked him to read it again and study it rather closely, that I was very sure if he found nothing in it that I would never give another Life Reading. It was about two months before I heard from him again. Then he wrote me, “Cayce, I have to tell you I have not burned that paper yet, and I never will. I did not want to see myself like that, but it is me, no one else.”

Only a few months ago after all these years he asked that I make an appointment for an associate of his for a Life Reading. Then he writes me, “Cayce, I see the Life Readings still need study. I am sure that it is indicated in all the readings I have seen of this kind it is meant for an individual to analyze and study this information, for it is personal. Yes, it deals with the heart and soul of the individual. May God bless you and may you never lose this ability.”

I hope then you will study over the information, and then write me again, for if it is possible we would like very much to try and help. Let us know any questions that you may wish to have answered.

R3. 2/20/44 [3237]‘s letter to EC:

My dear Mr. Cayce-

Referring to the Psychic Reading for Miss [3237] Sept. 24, 1943, concerning which I wrote at some length. I do not disagree with anything in it. In fact on the contrary quite agree.

The question which I did not make clear is this: Are the complete stenographic notes sent on to the entity for whom you make the reading, or only excerpts. I tried to tell you how incomplete it seemed as if some of it had been left out, I should appreciate knowing.

Another question I had asked ‘who is the nearest local representative of the Assn?’

Also ‘the Assn encourages experimentation and individual development of extra-sensory faculties!’ What is your suggestion, plan for such a beginning. Have you a bibliography of reading which you recommend to a student.

Is there some way of being of service to the Ass’n?

Have you a list of pamphlets which the Ass’n publish? Please understand that the reading speaks of certain things which I can well profit by and realize. A part of it, a former life was of course new. The question again was not one of disagreement but whether the complete stenographic notes are sent out. If not there’s a good reason I believe which one need not question. I should appreciate your answer.

R4. 3/4/44 GD’s letter to [3237]:

Miss [3237] …, New York

Dear Miss [3237]:

Due to Mr. Cayce’s illness, I am taking the liberty of answering your letter of February 20th.

The complete stenographic notes of your Life Reading were sent to you. Naturally all Life Readings are given briefly, as it would be impossible for your various experiences in the earth to be given in detail. This is explained at the beginning of almost every Life Reading. All of the information that comes “through”, however, is sent to the individual having the reading.

We do not have a Regional Representative of the Association in … We only have six or seven members there, and a few members in nearby towns. Perhaps you would be interested in becoming a representative of the Association for our membership in your vicinity.

Our Regional Representative in New York City is: Mrs. Julia Chandler, 120 E. 37th St., N.Y.C. You might be interested in communicating with her.

After going over your Life Reading, I believe that you would find much in common with another Member of our Association: Miss [1387], …, N.Y.C. You must have been associated in some of your past incarnations and, I believe, your present interests are somewhat along the same lines.

I have checked articles on the enclosed publication list that might interest you, especially “Oneness of All Force”. The book, “A Search For God”, includes the article on “Meditation”, so you would not need to order this pamphlet if you get the book. There are many books on psychic phenomena that have been recommended for study for developing extrasensory faculties. Miss […] or Mrs. Chandler could help you in this, as they are both familiar with the findings of the Association through the years.

R5. 9/30/44 Miss [1387]‘s letter to GD: ”…Miss [3237] sent me her reading to read. It is most interesting and gave the most explicit directions about doing something that I think I ever saw in a reading. I must find out if she did what it said…”

R6. 2/4/62 GD’s note: Miss [3237] has remained actively interested in A.R.E. to this date. She did do some writing. A few of her things got published.

R7. 9/12/67 [3237]‘s letter to GD: “Am on steering committee … College helping in alumnae library. Hugh Lynn will be at a lecture at the College on Oct… I want a good tape on hypnosis before H. L. gets to us, since any experiments along these lines should be carefully set up if tried out… Showers of blessings to all and ever deep appreciation.”

R8. 10/2/69 Routine membership mailing was ret’d marked DECEASED. She had visited A.R.E. a few months earlier and we understood she had cancer, but she remained active, leading a normal life so far as could be noted outwardly.
