This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 7th day of October, 1943, in accordance with request made by the self - Mrs. [3271], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by the book, THERE IS A RIVER.

Born August 25, 1888, 8:30 P. M. European Time, in Trondhjem, Norway. Time of Reading 10:55 to 11:20 A. M. Eastern War Time. …, California.

1. GC: You will give the relations of this entity and the universe, and the universal forces; giving the conditions which are as personalities, latent and exhibited in the present life; also the former appearances in the earth plane, giving time, place and the name, and that in each life which built or retarded the development for the entity; giving the abilities of the present entity, that to which it may attain, and how. You will answer the questions, as I ask them:

2. EC: Yes, we have the records here of that entity now known as or called [3271].

3. In giving the interpretations of the records as we find them here for this entity, much might be said as to the abilities of the entity and those attainments that are to be used as expressions in the present experience.

4. A very active, a very unusual experience for the entity; yet if there is the application of self in those directions in which we find the entity may apply self, there may still be in this experience the greater accomplishments - material, mental and spiritual.

5. Astrologically, we find or from sojourns or consciousness of the entity in the interims between earthly manifestations, - Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter as the ruling forces.

6. It is indicated that very soon those changes in the influence of Uranus should bring the extreme activity of the entity in the abilities towards accomplishments that may be had in writing.

7. Mercury - of the mind; the high mental abilities.

8. In Venus we find the expressions of beauty, delineation, the outdoors, descriptive matter; all become portions of the entity’s abilities.

9. Jupiter - the benevolent, the universal, the activities that may become super in the present as related to the occult. Complete this before the 26th of next April.

10. As to the appearances, - there we find quite varied. These are given as the indication of the activities in the earth, and the influence these bear upon the conditions motivating the mental self of the entity.

11. Before this the entity was in the land of the present sojourn during the early settlings in the eastern portion.

12. The entity was among those hardy peoples of the Norse land who settled in what has been termed Vinland.

13. There the entity was among those who attempted to make the first establishments. And upon such may the entity draw for strength, even virility, in the present activity; whether for mental or physical attributes needed; provided the spiritual attitudes or ideals are held in their proper relationships to the other phases of the earthly consciousness - or the three-dimensional consciousness of earth activities.

14. The entity was active in establishing and building homes, the united effort on the part of groups not only for protection but edification and help in the various stresses that arose from carving homes and a livelihood out of the wilderness.

15. These brought experiences to the entity of strength, spiritual and mental, and they may be used and called upon the present in the activities of the entity.

16. The name then was Josephine Hordf, and the entity’s activities bring strength for the present.

17. Before that the entity was in the Holy Land, during those periods when the Master walked in the earth.

18. The entity was among those who became close to those activities in the latter portion of that ministry; being among those who journeyed into the land and then remained to carry on afterward.

19. The entity became among those ministered to, and who ministered for the efforts of the church after the days of waiting for the coming of the Holy Spirit.

20. The entity was among that group or throng, though it had already been admitted or accepted into the group; and the entity contributed much to the welfare during those periods just before the beginning of the persecutions.

21. With the persecutions the entity withdrew in such an outward activity, yet in sincerity of purpose carried on with those contributions to the labors; not only to the ministers and teachers, but to those that came from far and near.

22. Then name then was Corine.

23. From that sojourn the abilities attained as to detail, literature, educational factors, history, may bring activities for the greater interpretation of spiritual forces in a material surrounding or environ.

24. Keep in that way, then, in which these abilities may be kept active in the experience.

25. Before that the entity was in the Persian land where the people of the Holy Land had been sent as hostages.

26. The entity then was in the household of that king who had brought them in, but began to plan - with the entity there - for one day returning.

27. The entity heard and saw in Nebuchadnezzar’s life the interpretation of his dream and the influences it wrought.

28. Thus the mysteries and the things pertaining to such mean much to the entity, yet at times have been held afar - though the entity is deeply moved by all occult powers or forces, as indicated in those periods when such activities brought wonders in the earth and man eating as the ox.

29. The entity gained and lost, and gained. The entity was never permitted to be among those returning to the City for the reestablishing, but contributed much in many ways in aiding the various ones.

30. There the entity, it might be said, was a very good friend of Nehemiah, or - what might be called in every day parlance - his “lady friend.”

31. All of those things pertaining to varied movements, as of any form of uplift are a part of the entity’s consciousness from the experiences there. These might be a part of the entity’s activity in delineation in any movement that might be of a helpful nature in local conditions, in national or international conditions.

32. Before that the entity was in the Atlantean land, when there were those trials arising from disputations between the children of the Law of One and the sons of Belial, when there were the rejections of the activities of the occult forces being made manifest.

33. The entity gave way, not to that of sin but hold rather to that of holding peace than using righteousness in power to destroy those willful in the flesh.

34. As to the abilities of the entity in the present, that to which it may attain and how:

35. First learn thine own ideals, - physical, mental and spiritual. Know the author of that chosen - as the rules and regulations governing the moral life, but apply self in the manner in which ye minister - or according to that which ye preach.

36. Do teach men by and through thy abilities as a writer. For these will leave for thee much that may be of a help to a great many.

37. Do not stand still but continue in those activities in same.

38. Ready for questions.

39. (Q) Along what lines should I write? (A) As indicated, those that give detail of the outside, and especially as related to travel and to history.

Dear Mr. Cayce;

About 1934 [1943?] your father made me a reading which all thru the years I have tried to keep, with his book, There is a River. The book I bought thru the Book of Month Club. For some reason, in changing my library this reading must have been lost or destroyed.

In obtaining the Bridey Murphy book I learned that you have a complete record of all the reading your father made. I hope I can obtain from you a copy of the one he made for me. Will you kindly advise and oblige.

Dear Sir:

I have just finished reading “There is a River” by Thomas Sugrue - bought thru the book of month club. And I wish you to know it seems an answer to the many problems that confront human beings. My sympathies for you and your family in a trying travail can best be chronicled “The most you can say of them is, they are human beings,” and our teacher says - “They have eyes & see not.” That you all have come thru the fire - tempered - pure may seem poor compensation for all your efforts, but the high quality of your work is such only thru education can it reach the multitudes.

I am grateful, YOU the instrument thru which this knowledge flows - is still HERE - in the mortal body - IN MY space. I have searched for an understanding of what its all about

• WHY I am here, why my sympathies are always with the troubled. Since I little child, I have always felt the greatest gift would be to HEAL the sick - make straight the crooked places, etc. I have walked behind cripples, WITH a conscious steady prayer, for their help, & have known those infected, seems truly more Christian than those wanting or wishing to help. All thru the book, I kept thinking, Dear God pray this man is still alive, that I might see him enter a study class, & learn, & in the last chapter - (which I just finished) I sit down to write you immediately, before putting the book on the library shelf.

Can you, will you give me a reading? I’m ashamed to ask this for myself, when I know personally several persons, close to me, a brother, a niece, & step in law, who need you in a degree more than I, but, I feel somehow it may be the way. I am enclosing a check, which, while I do not know the charge, you may fill in.

A year ago, I had, what I learned was a sciatic illiac slip, it has left my right leg & the ball of right my foot, in a painful SEEMINGLY swollen condition, although that is the sense of feeling - I cannot enjoy working in my garden, & I walk with difficulty. I have been a student of C.S. [Christian Science] for 30 years. I am of Norwegian extraction born in Trondhjem Norway - August 25, 1888.

First the Lutheran Church, next the Methodist E. & then Episcopalian, then - NOTHING. I had the courage to ask some of the questions your work has experienced, & I found C.S., possibly the more revolutionary, in comparison.

I have studied metaphysics extensively.

My activities have been in connection with women’s organizations, & politically for clean government, social services, I am an officer in various such organizations & have organized many groups for social service, etc.

This may all seem beside the question, but, in a reading, I should like to know, WHY I AM; what may my purpose be. I seem successful in many things, as success is measured BUT I have had psychic experiences - which may indicate something that in a measure may be helpful. Reading “Frontiers of the Mind,” Seabooks[?], & various other authors, including Freud, I have never felt a satisfactory explanation until I read “There is a River,” & believe you me, I have studied 16 to 18 hours a day, read everything available.

This letter may seem confused, I fear I’m trying to write a life time of experiences in a request for a Reading, BUT my hope is to interest others, here in California but before so doing, I feel I must see & talk with you or adjust my affairs that I may carry on a study class here. Obviously, I need the proper foundation, & the tools with which to work.

Will you advise?

The Reading, I would like, may ascertain why I have thru prayer healed some, had certain visions, one in which I seem to recognize you. All of which I would like to go into with you, & WHERE could I serve best. This is my wish.
