This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 7th day of October, 1943, in accordance with request made by the self - Mr. [3273], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by the book, THERE IS A RIVER.

1. GC: You will give the relations of this entity and the universe, and the universal forces; giving the conditions which are as personalities, latent and exhibited in the present life; also the former appearances in the earth plane; giving time, place and the name, and that in each life which built or retarded the development for the entity; giving the abilities of the present entity, that to which it may attain, and how. You will answer the questions, as I ask them:

3. Yes, we have the records here of that entity now known as or called [3273].

4. In giving the interpretation of the records, these we choose with the desire and purpose that this information be a helpful experience for the entity, enabling the entity to better fulfill those purposes for which it entered this present sojourn.

5. As indicated from the period under which the activities of the entity might be classified, the entity will ever be - as it ever has been - a leader. Whether this is to be directed in a political or a ministerial experience, or in economic efforts, will depend upon the use the entity makes of its abilities in its associations with its fellow man.

6. The entity in the present has a good speaking voice. Use it widely; not too loud, not too long. Be sure of what ye would speak, then move into activity.

8. HERE LORD! USE ME IN THAT CHANNEL, IN THAT WAY IN WHICH I MAY BE THE GREATER SERVICE TO THEE; TO GLORIFY THEE.

9. Astrologically we find Jupiter, Venus, Mars, - yea in all of these we find urges mentally arising from same. There are those interests in all that has to do with moral uplift.

10. So, in its activities, whether in the ministry or political activities, let it ever be with the reform groups; not necessarily in the over-expression of self but live it, be it thine self.

11. For, with this entity as most others, what thou art speaks so loud few hear what you say. For the words must be given the spirit of truth. It is with and by what spirit you give the word as to whether it quickens the heart of thy neighbor or not.

12. Study then to show thyself approved, a workman not ashamed, rightly dividing the words of truth and keeping self unspotted from condemnation - even though you may at times find thyself misunderstood.

13. As to the appearances in the earth, - we find that the entity has been quite active. While all the appearances may not be indicated, these are given that ye may see in which direction those tendencies have builded and are building in the present:

14. Before this the entity was in the land of the present nativity, during the early settlings in the “city of brotherly love or peace”.

15. There the entity grew into the activities with the elders of the house in command; not as governor but rather as the minister to the wants and needs of the spiritual life of individuals.

16. Then in the name Murray, the entity brought to those activities many of those things that led to disputations among certain groups. And yet with the establishing of popular vote, the entity was able to indicate the powers of the influences through which the entity had sought activities through his sojourn in that land.

17. Before that the entity was in the Holy Land, when there were those divisions in the church following the spreading of the Apostles and teachers, after the persecution by those that were called to activities in Rome; when there had been the administering of the death sentence to the Prince of Peace.

18. The entity became a power, until it attempted to use it for its own satisfaction. Yet the entity’s activity led a great many of those peoples to become active so as to bring about the building up of that people as a nation.

19. The name then was Smithene, there the entity gained.

20. Before that the entity was in the Egyptian land when those tenets were carried on between the Egyptians and the Hebrews; when there was the calling forth of the children of Israel from the land.

21. The entity gained through joining himself with those people who became wanderers, and these activities brought to the entity the greater satisfaction throughout that sojourn in the earth. For the entity ministered to those in authority in such ways and manners as to better establish a closer walk with the First Cause, the first purpose, the God-force in that entity.

22. Before that the entity was in the Egyptian land during those periods when groups were brought together that had much to do with the classifying of activities of certain groups.

23. The entity was one of the judges, as given to the mother of the entity in those activities for bringing the groups under the new King, establishing peace with the Natives, assisting in the attempts to put down rebellions.

24. The entity suffered much, but gained eventually in the tenets that were prepared through the entity in its intuitive activities and forces.

25. Before that the entity was in the land of its present sojourn, when those groups were first entering that portion of the land from the upheavals that had come with the destruction of Atlantis.

26. There the entity, in those environs where the entity again came into the earth, brought about the establishings of motives for the improvement of the people in their interrelationships with others.

27. As to the abilities of the entity in the present that to which it may attain and how:

28. As indicated, in politics, in church ministry in economics, the entity may succeed materially, find joy mentally, and find peace spiritually.

29. Keep then those ideals. Follow in the way He would have thee go. Direct lovingly, for with what measure ye mete it is measured to thee again. And as ye apply, you will find the law abiding ever.

Gentlemen:

Sometime between 1944 and the date of Mr. Cayce’s death, Mr. Cayce gave me a Life Reading. Shortly after receiving this reading the transcript was lost and I have been trying to find it ever since but without success. I wonder whether you would be good enough to send me a copy. If you could do this for me I assure you that I will send you a thank offering to express my appreciation. I’m not at all sure of the year in which this reading was given, but I do know that it has been since I have been in Kingsport. I came here in the Spring of 1943.

The reason I’m so anxious to get this information is because I have to make a trip to Philadelphia in the near future and, according to Mr. Cayce’s reading, in a former life I lived in that city. But I’ve forgotten what my name was at that time! It so happens that in this incarnation I was born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, just forty-five miles from Philadelphia; a fact I feel quite sure Mr. Cayce didn’t know about unless I told him in my letter requesting a Life Reading. At any rate, while I am in Philadelphia I want to find out, if possible, what sort of a chap I was during that incarnation.

I’m reading Dr. Gina Cerminara’s “Many Mansions” with deep interest and I do hope that the book will have a very wide sale.

Thank you for your help and you will be hearing from me in the near future with a check enclosed.

Dear Mr. [3273]

We have your inquiry of January 11. Enclosed is a copy of the life reading given you by Edgar Cayce in 1943.

We are also sending you a report form on this life reading and hope that you will fill it out carefully for us.

It would be of great interest to know just how you heard of Gina Cerminara’s book MANY MANSIONS.

Did you receive from us a copy of A SEARCH FOR GOD, Book II? This was mailed to a good many of the ministers on our mailing list, and I am not sure whether we sent you a copy or not.

Under separate cover I am sending you some data that we have mailed to ministers from time to time. The number of ministers interested in our efforts here is growing. At the present time, a young minister by the name of Harmon Bro, (you may remember the name from the Coronet article, MIRACLE MAN OF VIRGINIA BEACH - his mother wrote the article and reviewed THERE IS A RIVER for the Christian Century) did his work at the University of Chicago for his Ph.D. thesis, on our records here and is now completing a book based on these records which will be published by Harper Brothers. We are certain that there is a great deal of the data in our records here that will be of interest and help to church-minded people.

I hope at the first opportunity you will visit us here at the Association Headquarters and make a personal study of the work we are doing on the Edgar Cayce records.

Dear Mr. Cayce:

Thank you very much for your kind letter of May 31st. Once again I am sending the check for $20.00 back to you. I would like you to use this in anyway you see fit. You undoubtedly must have a number of people who need help and who just don’t have the money. So, along about the first of May each year I’ll send a like amount to help with the great work that you’re doing.

October 7th, between 3:30 and 4:30 P.M. will be fine. If by any chance a period should open up before that date I’d appreciate it if you would let me know.

For many years I have been deeply interested in the work of the American Society for Psychical Research; the British Association for Psychical Research, and the International Metaphysical Institute of Paris, France. As I told you in my first note, I’ve been convinced, for a long time, in the basic truth of the doctrine of reincarnation. When you get to my Life Reading there are two things I’d most like to know about. (1) As a clergyman of the Episcopal Church am I in the job that will bring about the deepest Spiritual growth in the Spiritual part of my eternal self - and if I am, how can I best serve my fellow men. (2) I have a certain moral weakness which causes me deep concern. I would like to know as much about this difficulty as I can know. If I can once know the truth regarding this matter it will be a great weight lifted from my mind.

Dear Mr. Cayce:

I have before me your two good letters, one of May 31st, the other of June 4th. I haven’t answered the last letter before this because I didn’t want to trouble you when I know how very busy you are. But as the date of my “Life Reading”

approaches - it is to be October 7th, I understand - I wanted to tell you how much I appreciate your help and to send along the questions you suggested that I ask. So here they are:

1. What should I be doing between 3:30 and 4:30 P.M. on October 7th?
2. Am I doing the work, as a clergyman of the Church, for which I’m best adapted?
3. What causes me to have periods of rebellion against the profession of the ministry; why should I have, at times, an almost uncontrollable urge to leave the ministry, yet not in the least knowing WHAT I should do if I did give up my present work?
4. Just what are my “besetting sins” which are holding me back in my Spiritual Evolution?
5. I’m married; have two adopted children. The boy is in the navy; was on the …, but came through the sinking all right. The girl is twelve. What have been my relations with these three people in the past, and how can I best help them in their development while I’m struggling with my own?
6. Since entering this present incarnation have I been making progress, or am I at a standstill?

I think these are the most important questions. I realize that during the reading itself many other things will be touched upon. I have the feeling that this reading is to be the turning point in my life. I can promise you I’ll obey the instructions contained in it to the letter.

Dear Mr. Cayce:

I am inclosing a check for five dollars; it isn’t very much, but I’d like to send you the same amount each month, if I’m able, so that those who need your help so badly may have the opportunity regardless of whether they have the money or not. If, in the future, I’m able to increase this amount I will do it.

There is one more question I’d like to add to the list I sent you to be asked on October 7th, when I have my Life Reading. If I’m advised to remain in the ministry should I teach the truth - i.e. regarding reincarnation and so on - as the Holy Spirit teaches it to me, without fear of ecclesiastical wrath? I find, in my sermons, that it is growing more difficult every day to keep silent regarding these truths and it seems so important that these teachings be given to those who have the ears to hear and the minds to understand.

There’s one other thing I’d like to ask you about. I have a brother-in-law who has nearly wrecked his life and the life of his family through drink. He’s a fine chap and I am really fond of him, but there is nothing I can do for him because of his antipathy toward “preachers” and religion. I believe he has brought over into this life this weakness and, regardless of what a mess he may make of this life, if he doesn’t do something about it he’ll only have it with him again and again, life after life, until he does overcome it. Do you think a Life Reading would do him any good? And if you think it would, what would be the next date you could give him one?

Thank you again for all the real help you are giving people. If there is any way in which I can help please let me know. I’ll be in the Church between 3:30 and 4:30 Thursday afternoon of October 7th. That day will be THE outstanding one of my life!

Dear [3273]:

Thank you for yours of the 27th. I appreciate very much your desire to help us out with those who are not in themselves able to pay for their readings. These happen of course, right along, and we appreciate other members helping us to make it possible to give the information for those who are not fortunate enough to take care of it.

Of course, you know from my experience that I have to smile when I think of your question about your preaching. I wish you were here for a little while. I would like to sit down and discuss this subject with you. I of course, do not know what the reading will say about your preaching it from the pulpit. Doubtless, you will have to preach it very much as the Master did, in parables. Those who know what you are talking about will hear and understand. Those who do not, possibly won’t be offended. Of course, I am awake now and talking about it. I know that is the way I have to do in my own Sunday School Class. Those who are well acquainted with the work of course understand. Those who are not usually come and ask questions, or oftentimes tell me just what did you mean, and then we have the opportunity to talk it over personally.

I wish I knew what to tell you about your brother-in-law. If there is any one thing that I have had a lot of experience with, this is it, but I still know so little about it, you might say I know nothing. One will have to have the cooperation of the person before very much good, if anything, could be done. We have had quite a number of cases of this kind, and in some have had marvelous results, but never very satisfactory unless we did have the cooperation of the person themselves. A life reading might help a whole lot. There are such things of course. This trouble may be a disease brought over from some happening in another experience, or it may have been in a former experience he was so rabid the other way, now he has to meet himself in that.

I do hope the reading tomorrow afternoon will prove as helpful to you as it has to so many others.
