GC: You will give the relations of this entity and the universe, and the universal forces; giving the conditions which are as personalities, latent and exhibited in the present life; also the former appearances in the earth plane, giving time, place and the name, and that in each life which built or retarded the development for the entity; giving the abilities of the present entity, that to which it may attain, and how. You will answer the questions, as I ask them:
-
Yes, we have the records here of that entity now known as or called [3309].
-
In giving the interpretations of the records here, these we chose with the desire and purpose to be of a helpful influence to the entity; enabling the entity to better fulfill the purposes for which it entered this sojourn.
-
We would magnify the virtues, we would minimize the faults - as should be the tenets of the entity in its dealings with others.
-
It is indicated that there have been and will be unusual experiences in the material sojourn of this entity; some that to many are unbelievable, and yet the entity has passed through same - and remained near normal mentally as well as physically.
-
In interpreting the records here, we find Mars, Saturn, Jupiter and Uranus in the experience of the entity. Thus a very changeable, a very active individual; and - dependent upon the application - a very worthwhile experience for the entity through this material sojourn. Extremes have been and will be a part of the experience. But for the entity with its disappointments, its sorrows, its shames at times, there should be applied those same tenets in self as in relationships to others, - as He who is the way gave, “Neither do I condemn thee - go and sin no more.” These should be kept first and foremost in the experience of the entity, and in applying the life, the experiences of life one with another, learn that as long as there is life there is hope, there is opportunity. Stop, consider, listen to the promptings deep within self. Know that He, Father-God, is mindful of thee, but the very fact that ye still have the opportunity in self to know thyself, and to desire and to hope and to wish for those changes as should come into thine own experience, that ye may never condemn thyself. If He condemns thee not, why condemn thyself? And if He condemns not, it matters not what others may think.
-
Then apply in thy experience, in thy relationships, in thy associations one with another, knowing - as He has given - “Inasmuch as ye do it unto the least of these my children, ye do it unto me.” Today, as ye will hear His voice, then turn, know in whom ye believe; knowing that He is able to forgive sin in the earth, in the mental, yea in the hereafter. For, even to that one on the Cross He gave, “Today thou shalt be with Me in paradise.”
-
So with thee in thy seeking, in thy own stumbling manner listen to that voice within.
-
Apply thyself, then, to organized charity work; that wherein ye may be active in thine own faith Roman Catholic] that thou hast professed. Be not unfaithful to that. For He is Lord of all. If ye will do it, ye will find peace, harmony, happiness within thine experience in this earth.
-
Apply thyself, then, and let thy prayer oft be, in thine own words, not merely as rote, but living, being, as this:
LORD, BE THOU NEAR TO ME. THINE HUMBLE SERVANT SEEKETH THY VOICE, THY DIRECTION. KEEP ME NEAR THEE, EVEN AS THOU HAST PROMISED - IF I ASK IN THY NAME, YE WILL ANSWER. THEN HEAR ME, THAT I - TOO - MAY DRAW NEAR TO THEE AND BE BLESSED BY THEE.
- We are through with this reading.

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 10/28/43 [3309]‘s letter:
…, Ohio
Mr. Edgar Cayce Ass’n for Research & Enlightenment Virginia Beach, Virginia
Dear Mr. Cayce:
I have waited for months for the Reading, prayed earnestly during the time of the Reading, and looked forward eagerly to its receipt, which came yesterday, and frankly after reading the report I actually shed tears of disappointment. I really expected some concrete guidance, but unfortunately received nothing of any value. I have read and re-read the report a number of times and it leaves me neither here nor there - certainly not any wiser than previously.
In the first place, you wrote me that the reading would take place from 3:30 to 4:30 EWT time, while the report shows a reading of only 25 minutes, from 3:35 to 4:00.
In the second place, my baptismal name does not show on the report, so I assume it was not used in the reading.
Third, I cannot see where you have answered any of the questions put to you by the conductor:
- “You will give the relations of this entity and the universe, and the universal forces, giving the conditions WHICH ARE AS PERSONALITIES (?), latent and exhibited in the present life.”
I don’t see anything in the report which might be construed as an answer to this.
- “Former appearances on the earth plane, giving time, place and the name.”
No mention of any kind is made regarding former appearances.
- “Abilities of the present entity, that to which it may ATTAIN and HOW”.
Surely doing charity work is not a latent ability nor a talent.
I don’t understand the following nor can I see how it applies:
“It is indicated that there HAVE BEEN and will be UNUSUAL EXPERIENCES in the material sojourn of this entity, some that are UNBELIEVABLE, and yet the entity has PASSED THRU SAME and remained NEAR NORMAL mentally as well as physically”.
I don’t know of any “unusual experiences” of “unbelievable” nature. What sort of experiences?? I don’t think there can be a more uneventful and monotonous life than mine is and has been.
The next paragraph is wholly unintelligible to me. What is meant by
“We find Mars, Saturn, Jupiter and Uranus in the experience of the entity. This is a very changeable and very active individual.”
I am neither changeable nor active - static would be the more accurate word to use.
Also please clarify the following:
“DEPENDENT UPON THE APPLICATION, a very worthwhile experience for the entity thru the material sojourn.”
What sort of application?
Also, “EXTREMES HAVE BEEN and will be a part of the experience.” What is meant by “extremes”. I certainly haven’t known of any.
After reading and re-reading the following, I can’t for the life of me make head or tail of this, so please elucidate:
“But for the entity with its disappointments, its sorrows, its SHAMES at times (?), there should be applied those same tenets in self as in relationship to others, - as He who is the way gave, ‘Neither do I condemn thee - go and sin no more’. These should be kept first and foremost in the experience of the entity, and in applying the life, the experiences of life one with another, learn that as long as there is life there is hope, there is opportunity (WHAT SORT OF OPPORTUNITY?) Stop, consider, listen to the promptings deep within self. Know that He, Father-God, is mindful of thee, BUT THE VERY FACT THAT YE STILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY IN SELF TO KNOW THYSELF (?), AND TO DESIRE AND TO HOPE AND TO WISH FOR THOSE CHANGES AS SHOULD COME INTO THINE OWN EXPERIENCE (?) THAT YE MAY NEVER condemn thyself (???) If He condemns thee not, why condemn thyself (???) And if He condemns not, it matters not what others may think”???
For the life of me I don’t understand the implication here. The word “condemn” puzzles me. Moreover, I condemn no one nor myself as I have no reason for doing so nor do I have the desire. I don’t get this at all. Further,
“Then apply in thy experience, in thy relationships, in thy associations one with another, knowing - as He has given - ‘Inasmuch as ye do it unto the least of these my children, ye do it unto me.’ Today, as ye will hear His voice, then turn, know in whom ye believe; knowing that He is able to forgive sin in the earth, in the mental, yes in the hereafter. For, even to that one on the Cross He gave, ‘Today thou shalt be with Me in paradise.’”
All the above seems to imply that I am sort of a scarlet woman, when as a matter of fact a cloistered nun’s life couldn’t have been more secluded or limited than mine is and has been. We are all sinners and as Christians we are taught that God forgives our sins if we but turn to him. According to the Roman Catholic teaching Redemption and forgiveness of sins seems to [be] the root or foundation of our Christian faith, so I don’t understand why my inner self should stress forgiveness of sins.
In perusing your booklet I notice the following on the top of page 20:
“Mr. Cayce’s SOUL-MIND is able to make attunement with the INNER SELF of the individual seeking information”. Also,
“It is the PURPOSE of the Reading to AROUSE an individual to an AWARENESS of this INNER LIGHT, this INNER SELF.”
The report leaves me absolutely cold. Apparently my “inner self” had very little to say or reveal. On page 16 you state as follows:
“The Life Reading is a study of the CHARACTER, THE MENTAL and SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT of the entity (self). Each Life Reading PRESENTS A CROSS SECTION of a GREAT PLAN FOR SPIRITUAL EVOLUTION. It includes DETAILED INFORMATION REGARDING THE MORE IMPORTANT OF PAST INCARNATIONS and SUGGESTIONS FOR DEVELOPING LATENT TALENTS AND ABILITIES IN LINE WITH SOME LIFE WORK.”
Certainly the report does not contain any such information and is obviously a misrepresentation and in direct contradiction of all that has been said in “There is a River”, in your pamphlets and the few bulletins I have received. To me it is just a vague, abstract jumble of words without meaning, guidance, or information. I have never been so keenly disappointed in my life because I turned to you believing I would receive some help.
I do not wish to be impertinent or rude, but in all fairness to myself and others, are you really satisfied that such a report as this is of value or assistance to anyone and that you are justified in charging $20.00 for such service?
I should be interested in hearing further from you.
Very truly yours, [3309]

Dear Miss [3309]
Thank you for your letter of the 28th. I am sorry to know that the information that was given in your particular case, does not fit in with your ideas, and apparently it does not fit in at all to your character, or characteristics.
If you will return the reading to me, I will be very glad to refund the membership fee you paid.
Thanking you, I am,
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce EC/vc

Mr. Edgar Cayce Virginia Beach, Virginia
Dear Mr. Cayce:
I have your letter of November 3rd and note your statement “I am sorry to know that the information that was given in your particular case does not fit in with YOUR IDEAS.”
The “ideas” as you state were not exactly mine, but PROMISES made by you. It was stated in your booklet and in the QUESTIONS OF THE CONDUCTOR OF THE READING that you would give
Former appearances in the earth plane, giving time, place and the name, and
What in each life retarded or built my development, also
My LATENT and exhibited ABILITIES; that to which I may ATTAIN and HOW.
Since these questions were asked you by the conductor, would it not be natural for me to want this information? From the bulletins received and from THERE IS A RIVER you have given people this information and have been helpful to them, so why not me?
As suggested, I am returning the report as it means nothing to me. I have asked you a questions in my previous letter which you did not answer and I appeal to you again, “DO YOU REALLY FEEL THAT THIS REPORT, THAT IS, THE INFORMATION CONTAINED THEREIN, WOULD BE OF HELP TO ANYONE”? This is not meant for impudence or argument. I merely ask for your honest opinion.
I am bitterly disappointed not only in the reading but in your indifferent attitude, as you are the only person on earth I know of who could be of help.
Very truly yours, [3309]

Miss [3309] …, Ohio
Dear Miss [3309]
In the information that was given you, on October, just why at times, it does not give all of those things, that we should expect, and have been expecting to get in same, I don’t know. I have never been able to interpret it, though I have tried to analyze it now for the last twenty years or more. Yes, I think if you wish to make practical application that you would find a great deal in this information that you might use. That it may be considered very general and thus so general as not to be specific for us at all, is another question. We will be very glad as, you say, if you feel that we might be the means of a help. Whether it will give you anything further, giving the appearances and what you were supposed to do about them in the present, I still do not know, but I will be very happy to try to be of help. I don’t want you to think that I am not unmindful of the responsibility that rests with me, when I undertake to try to give information to direct peoples lives. I feel that you are sincere and want you to know that we are, or we think we are, too. If you find that we are indifferent, please tell us about it, for I don’t want to be indifferent towards anyone.
We are, as I told you, returning the membership fee of $20.00, but if you would like for us to try this again, please indicate it, and I will be very glad to give you another appointment for you just as soon as possible.
With every good wish, I am
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce EC/vw

Mr. Edgar Cayce Virginia Beach, Virginia
Dear Mr. Cayce:
I have been reading your biography “There is a River” and being a student of philosophy, I found your story most interesting and enlightening.
From the author’s account of your day, I assume you still give readings to those who desire them. If so, I should like for myself both physical and life readings.
Although I am not really ill, I have arthritis in my hands, experience discomfort in the abdominal region, am troubled with post-nasal catarrh and bronchitis. I have been to many doctors, but without much relief.
I am unmarried and am not particularly happy in my job - just drifting along and getting nowhere fast. Am doing secretarial work, but feel and believe I can do more worthwhile work. A life reading would undoubtedly disclose my special aptitudes and talents (for I understand all of us have talents if we can only discover them) and direct me along the right path. I have always wanted to be a writer, but I don’t know whether I lack the talent or whether I am just plain lazy, for it seems very difficult to get myself to sit down and write.
Please let me know what the fee is and I will be glad to remit.
Very truly yours, [3309]
B2. 6/7/43 Questions:
- Since marriage and children have passed me by, what is to fill the void in my life - or take away the lost feeling?
- Please give me guidance, light and knowledge of myself, so that I will not be static and appear to be getting nowhere either spiritually or otherwise.
- What are my aptitudes or latent talents, if any?
- Should I continue my present secretarial work, with which I am dissatisfied, or should I seek to get into some other field of endeavor?
B3. 9/7/43 Wire requested emergency Physical Reading as doctors advised immediate surgery for breast tumor. EC was ill and unable to respond. Evidently she had the operation.
B4. 10/13/43 She wrote she was keeping the appointment for her Life Reading.
