This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 21st day of July, 1944, in accordance with request made by the self - Mr. [3344], Active Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.

1. GC: You will have before you the entity [3344], of the …, Penna., born October 10, 1897 in …, Penna., who seeks information, advice and guidance as to the proposed publication of a magazine to be called “Spirit …”. He wishes to know if it is advisable to start such a publication. If so, is “Spirit …” the best name for it? You will answer the questions he submits, as I ask them:

2. EC: In considering such undertakings by the entity, there are considerations to be given such undertakings. This will require a great deal of thought, of work, of sweat, yes, of worry. Yet such a magazine, if the policies are correct, would be well.

3. As for individuals considered and as for the entity itself, its policies concerning same are well. We do not find that “Spirit …” would be the better name, rather that as “Mind …”. To be sure, spirituality is to be the basic principle which is to be considered, but rather let the analyzing of experiences which may be of influences within or without individuals be interpreted by the mental processes which are spiritually aware of all phases of spirit or spiritual phenomena. If these principles are adhered to, then we would have a magazine much more in keeping with that which is needed at this particular period. For analyzing such phenomena there may prove a helpful thing for those undertaking such a proposition. This may become far-reaching or it may become only a local condition, though as we find, after at least some ten months it might be - if such policies would be adopted - a paying, yes, a more than paying proposition, if considered from the financial angle alone. But this should not be the consideration only.

4. The first thing is to decide within self what are to be the policies of the publication, what type of material is to be considered. “Mind …” will give a much broader field and less questioning from certain groups or those who might question the advisability even of such an undertaking. But this policy determined, do not have advertisements more than announcing of meetings or of organizations. Through home a greater distribution of the magazine may be obtained.

6. (Q) What part should […], have in this project? (A) An assistant in formulating of policies. As to whether there should be a contributing of self or the material means, this, too, might be part of the policy as the entity itself might form.

7. (Q) Should […] of New York City be considered for Editor of the …? (A) […] is well, but rather set it there will have to be an adhering close to the policies which are determined before ye begin publication. We would publish it in … for “Mind …” from … is psychologically, itself, good.

8. (Q) What help in this proposition can be had from [3175]? (A) Supervising of Composition.

9. (Q) Any suggestion as to getting proper distribution? (A) As we find, as has been offered, these channels will be those means for distribution. Lists from various groups who know or have such interest which has been shown in such subjects. Do not make it a spiritualistic publication only. Do not hinder such phenomena from being indicated in same.

10. (Q) Any outstanding authors to contact who may have special contributions for us? (A) There may be many of those but these should be contacted as the policies are set in motion.

Dear Mr. Cayce:

Thanks for the reading on “Mind …”. I am well pleased with it and will try to follow all of the advise [advice] contained in it.

We have already changed the name and even tho we had “Spirit …” letterheads made we have laid them aside and have those with the new name being printed. Will show you a copy just as soon as they come from the printer.

The answer to one of the questions as regards the part to be taken by Mrs. [3175] was not quite clear and I was wondering if you would have the stenotypic notes checked to see if the reading gave it as “Supervisor of Composition” or “Supervisor of Contents”. I would also be glad to have your interpretation of what is meant by this position for if it has to do with the actual typesetting. I am somewhat at a loss as to its application as we propose at least for the time being to have the type composition done at an outside plant.

I hope you have fully recovered from your recent illness and are already back at the Work.

Dear Mr. [3344]

Thanks for yours of the 25th. Of course, being vitally interested in you and our good friend Mrs. [3175], I took the liberty of reading the one you had on “Spirit …”, as it was a bit unusual.

I was quite surprised at some of the suggestions, and I am in hopes that they will prove to be just the thing that will be worthwhile to you. I am sure you realize that we have had many, many requests from individuals, trying to get us to subscribe to something that they were putting in print, or to subscribe to some magazine and supply them with material from the Association. I will be very, very interested in knowing what is to be the policy of your magazine.

I believe there is a place for a “Mind …”. Of course there are so many …, and all of them are not going to make the financial success that “Readers Digest” has, for I suppose it is one of the most successful magazines ever launched, yet I can remember when they were really struggling.

As for the suggestion in the change of the name, I believe this is good. I don’t know what your Associates think of it, for evidently they had convinced you that “Spirit …” was best.

As for the question regarding Mrs. [3175] as Supervisor of Contents. She might be a very good one to tell you whether it was overstepping the bounds, either one way or another, I don’t know, but I believe that is what is indicated in the Reading.

No, I haven’t been well since the Congress. I thought I was about to break down, and went to Florida to try to get a little rest. While there I talked to the young man who wrote THERE IS A RIVER. If you every need someone to supply articles for your magazine, I believe you would have the opportunity of getting the services of someone who is a beautiful writer, in him. He was the Associate Editor of the American Magazine at the time he was taken ill. They had thought sufficiently well of him to send him around the world several times.
