This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 14th day of January, 1944, in accordance with request made by the self - Miss [3351], Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. (Notes read to and transcribed by Jeanette Fitch.) Harmon Bro.]
At her desk in the Time of Reading Dictaphone Room, 10:50 to 11:00 A. M. Eastern War Time. offices of the …, …, New York.
-
GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here.
-
As we find there are disturbances that are preventing the better physical functioning of the body. These have to do with disturbances through the activities of the eliminations as related to the organs of the pelvis.
-
These are the primary sources of disturbances, and these corrected, we will have much better conditions for this body - removing the causes of those disturbances in the circulation to the hands, arms, face, lips at times where there is the lack of the proper amount of oils in the circulation to keep normal activity, and then the acidity. With these corrections we will supply better elements for the body.
-
These, then, are the conditions as we find them with this body:
-
The blood supply indicates that there are disturbances in regard to the coordination of eliminations at the menstrual periods or in the flow at such periods in the activities of the genitive system. These are indicated in the manner of circulation, the hot and cold flushes at times in the body, as well as the disturbances at the beginning of the flow.
-
These, as we find, are from disturbances in the position of the organs of pelvis or in the uterus itself - the position of the womb itself. This is tilted in such a manner as to cause this condition to become rather disturbing to the body at the beginning of the Periods.
-
Then, we would have the activities of a good gynecologist who would use Packs in the vagina for placing the womb correctly and for holding it there until better conditions are brought about in the position of the body.
-
Then, after this has been done - some six weeks afterwards, we would have a series of hydrotherapy treatments. These should include douches taken regularly - say once or twice a week. These may be taken by self. One time use Atomidine, a teaspoonful in the quart of water, body temperature. The next time use Glyco-Thymoline, a tablespoonful to the quart of water body temperature. Use only a fountain syringe in giving these douches. Also include sweat baths, followed by oil rubs - Pine Oils - with the Pine Oil Bubble Bath, with the hot and cold needle shower.
-
These will make for such corrections as to bring about normal activity and normal reactions to the organs in this body.
-
Do that.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) What should be done about the fissure in the colon? Is hospitalization necessary? (A) The activities as given respecting the hydrotherapy treatments. This is not a fissure, it is an engorgement.
-
(Q) What diet would be best for me? (A) A normal, well balanced diet, keeping away from any red meats at all. Only fish, fowl or lamb as meat, and then never any of these fried.
-
(Q) Considering the endocrine dyscrasia evidenced by my physical appearance, lack of ability to accomplish work, irregular body processes, disposition and character, just how normal am I? (A) Do these things indicated. These are not a part of the conditions. These activities indicated are the conditions disturbing this body.
-
(Q) How much of the confusion in my living is attributable to disturbance? (A) 43 and 7/10ths per cent!
-
(Q) What is the nature of skin cracking on fingers and elsewhere in Winter? (A) As just given, this is from incoordination between the deeper and the superficial circulation. With the correction of the condition in the pelvic organs, with the hydrotherapy so that we establish coordinations between the superficial and the deeper circulation, these conditions will disappear.
Do that.
- We are through with this reading.
Two copies to Self (one for the gynecologist and later for the physiotherapist) Copy to Ass’n file ” ” Miss Goodall for indexing
(We would suggest that you see Dr. George N. Coulter, 18 East 41st St., N.Y.C., who is an osteopath who has handled many cases for us. Ask him to refer you to a good osteopathic gynecologist, who will give you the local packs indicated. Then, six weeks after you have finished his treatments, take the hydrotherapy treatments from Dr. H. J. Reilly, R.C.A. Bldg., 1250 6th Ave., N.Y.C.)

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 1/27/44, Thursday, [3351]‘s letter to EC:
Dear Mr. Cayce:
I want to say thank you as humbly as I can, but I’m so ecstatic about the findings of my reading that I just can’t thank you enough. If you could possibly know the relief one feels at really truly finding the source of physical incoordination after seeking almost a whole lifetime, you would know what I mean. I remember Mrs. [3051]‘s face (…, New Jersey) last summer, and the change in it from sheer relief and happiness after her physical reading, and if you remember it too, you’ll understand what I mean.
Mr. Cayce, I have not been able to be myself for years. If ever. It seemed to me my whole life was a mess of hopeless dissatisfaction and confusion and misery that I could not break away from or escape from. Now, for the first time, I have a glimmer of hope. I believe that I shall be able to be a useful poised young woman, now, and able to handle situations that come up, without their making of me a mass of - jelly, as has been the case for the last two years. I’ve not been able to live at all, my mental anguish was unbearable, and I accomplished so few of the things I wanted to do.
And I’ve wondered what, if anything, I would be able to do to help if I went to Virginia Beach. Perhaps my state of confusion and instability that pains me so much would do more harm there then good. And - in my travail, I find great comfort in your words that you there do care what becomes of me, and wish me well. They do ease some of the heartbreak.
Mr. Cayce, if there’s anything in the whole universe I do believe in and look to and that gives my inner eye something to build on positively, it’s you, and your manifested power. The spirit that works in me has been wasted by me in this life so far. But I begin to feel it working now. The understanding I have - battled so hard for for so long I can receive, somehow, from you. The way I know I’m growing and am spiritual is the way I grow to understand something. The strange thing I never thought I had - spiritual knowledge - I have had for quite a while, and especially since I met you. Maybe you can understand the way I feel, even though I am expressing it poorly.
I contacted Dr. Coulter last week, and in about another week or so, I will have the treatments started, under him. Right now, the case [Mother’s taxi accident] is 83 cases from today. So that probably means the first of next week ours will come up. After it is over, I intend to have the treatments, and if I am financially able, a rest. While I am doing this, if it is possible for me to run down to see you, could you find a moment to talk to me and let me know what special duties you would have for me to do there, and if there is something I can prepare for or bone-up on, I can do it while I am winding up my affairs here.
You see, I’m still floundering about my future. Perhaps you have a concrete idea that I’m not seeing yet, about me. I’m preparing for the great change in my life in 1944 and 1945 as told by the reading, and I’m studying French. I certainly don’t want to “miss this boat”. But where and how the change will come about, I don’t know. That is, if it’s away from Virginia Beach. As for me, that’s heaven right there.
Mr. Cayce, that bulletin [see Par. R2 below] that just came is a revelation! I’m amazed and delighted and stunned at the amount of things you have been able to do. You are all wonderful, and I want you to know I appreciate your wonderful efforts. It must be the most satisfying work in the whole world.
God Bless you all.
I’m more confused since receiving the bulletin about the money I have paid to the Association. Am I indebted to you? Have I paid the correct amount or have I misunderstood what was due you? Please let me know about this. For membership and readings and publications.
And, Mr. Cayce, I don’t know yet what I can do about sending money for sponsored memberships. I will do what I can, after my mother’s business is settled. If I can give $100.00 or more, I will. We have never been what you would call wealthy, but maybe God will put in my hands my share of help.
All my love to all of you, and my thanks. And I will contact you again soon, to let you know any developments in my plans.

R2. 1/44 B U L L E T I N VOL. XII, No. 4 [1350 copies sent out, January 21, 1944.]:
ASSOCIATION FOR RESEARCH AND ENLIGHTENMENT, INCORPORATED Virginia Beach, Virginia
“Man’s search for truth is his search for God.”
LIVING SPONSORSHIP: Our New Year here at Virginia Beach begins with warm thanks to all who have given to the Living Sponsorship Fund. The program of research is under way, and the office is buzzing.
It would be pleasant if each of you who have contributed would drop in for a visit here, at the Cayce’ big green office-house, just a block from the Atlantic Ocean. You’d find a staff of ten using every corner of the offices, perched at typewriters and working wherever there’s something flat enough to hold papers. Mr. Cayce’s desk has been swapped for a larger one, but it is still piled with letters waiting their turn to be answered, while his appointment calendar is bulging with something like 4500 readings ahead. All day long, from dark to dark (except for the precious two hours of readings), he dictates letters to people in need, trying to give them help until the time many months away when they can get their readings. Was there ever a man so pressed by the troubles - serious troubles - of others!
He squeezes in so many readings that each day is a wonder to us all, as though we were going on borrowed time. And maybe we ARE going on his borrowed health. But when visitors come asking who this crazy man is - he always finds time to talk with them, laugh with them, to tell them delightful stories of the work, and he sends them off to read the Bible, “the greatest record of worthwhile psychic experiences.”
Then at two o’clock every day comes the best few moments we all have together, for we push back our typewriters, close up the drawers, lay aside card files, and pull up our chairs around the big library table. There we read the Bible - it’s Romans right now - to question and wonder and discuss and maintain. It doesn’t last long, this pause for thought and prayer, but how much faster things go afterwards!
Those of you who are Living Sponsors of this work for a year can find blossoms already growing out of your gifts, here in Virginia’s mild winter. And yet there is still more to do than we like to think about. When we can untangle ourselves from a deluge of appeals, when we can figure out how to truly minister to hundreds without practically marrying each by mail, then we can cut a wider path of research as we move along.
Your gifts are helping us tremendously. Not only by paying the salaries of research workers, but by inspiring all of us. Every once in a while someone will write in with a gift that may be one dollar or five hundred dollars, telling us that it is saved from Navy pay, or that it is a month’s steno wages, or that as long as either Mary or Dick are making anything the Association will have part of it. Such earnest letters of faith make us too humble to speak. We can only work furiously.
To all contributors to the Living Sponsorship Fund, our grateful thanks. We are reminding you what a reading has reminded us: all past and future gifts to the Associations are legally deductible from taxes in the same manner as gifts to churches and schools. “Impress upon thine associates and thy membership that the contribution to same may be subtracted from their tax.”
ACTIVE MEMBERSHIPS: We are also housecleaning our memberships these days. Reading 254-92 started us off.
“There has not been that conforming to those rules and regulations as respecting Active Memberships, as to their contributions or the regular notifications as to their dues, where they have not been kept… If you would create for those who are interested, those who find help, those that may seek for places, for conditions that may give them an opportunity to put this world’s goods to active service… you wouldn’t be worrying about so much!”
Active Membership is for those who are not primarily seeking to buy or GET something from the Association, but desire a way to GIVE, to help. Out of the income from Active Membership all sponsored readings are paid - and there are more of these readings than most of us realize. Mr. Cayce has never refused his help to someone in need because it couldn’t be paid for. Then, too, the income from Active Memberships provides the chief nourishment for our publications program. The pamphlets now available on what the readings have given about everything from “Appendicitis” to “Uhjltd in Ancient Persia” have been made possible by the steady support of Active Members.
But the Association expects Active Members to ACT, which isn’t so queer after all. There are jobs for responsible members. The list below is now printed - with Active Membership application blanks - in the pamphlet, EDGAR CAYCE, HIS LIFE AND WORK; and these ways of helping stand on the back of every Active Member’s card:
- Collecting clippings and books of psychic materials for the Association’s library on the subject. When you see something thought-provoking, don’t put it away in a drawer. Send it on to us.
- Digging out research data from the files. There are more than twenty-five thousand individual folders of readings in our fire-proof vault. But until capable individuals extract the right materials, these readings are as effectively buried as the gold in Fort Knox.
- Writing up research data for publication by the Association. When you consider that readings have been given daily for over forty years on human illnesses, vocations, historical periods, philosophy, and spiritual teachings, you can well believe that “the material in these files will not be exhausted in one generation”!
- Serving as local representative. A new member finds his first reading a strange document. If a life reading it is phrased in Biblical language, and it has that Biblical characteristic of seeming to grow in meaning each time it is studied. If a physical reading it may suggest treatments apparently as radical as they are made of commonplace materials. One who has had his own experiences with readings can help at this point a great deal. Would you be willing to try?
- Encouraging sales of publications. Some day the information contained in the little books and pamphlets, as well as the solid books and studies published by the Association, will be the strong foundation upon which the Association grows and serves. Every time you get someone to send for one of our studies, you add cement to that foundation.
- Organizing a study group to use and develop devotional lessons. The Norfolk group has done a grand job in preparing from readings the book A SEARCH FOR GOD. It’s a simple start for thoughtful group discussion, as well as one’s personal living.
- Persuading physicians of any school to administer physical readings (how such men are needed!), and to study the data of physical readings. The Association will never be able to pass out wholesale the treatments which have been used effectively on cancer, tuberculosis, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis and insanity. It’s too big a job! And yet here are facts to save thousands of people yearly from suffering, and even from death. For those who seek to relieve human distresses there is untold material. Will you help?
- Writing or lecturing about psychic development. You’d probably have to do a good deal of studying first!
- Securing an endowment that will help to make the Association’s work permanent.
No one who sincerely desires to aid the Association in these ways is refused Active Membership for inability to pay its dues. As the very name shows, this is not the membership’s chief purpose. But the amount of twenty-five dollars has been set to cover a year’s membership, formally entitling one to nominate persons for the annual election of the Board of Trustees. The first reading had in any year of Active Membership costs ten dollars, and subsequent readings cost just what they do to Associate Members - twenty dollars apiece, except check physical readings at ten dollars apiece.
What an Active Member receives in black and white is one copy of everything published during the year: the monthly Bulletin, case studies of diseases, booklets on historical periods, extracts on philosophy, - all the varied publications of the Association’s research program. And the NEW weekly letter, whose first edition is part of this month’s bulletin. That brings us to the next paragraph.
BIRTHDAY OF A JOURNAL: This month there appears a new face in our family of publications. It is THIS WEEK’S READINGS, an informal page of excerpts from the readings given each week. The fragments chosen are, we believe, the most helpful of a seven-days’ harvest. Nobody could say strongly enough how earnestly we feel that such information must be LIVED. Otherwise to read these items is like eating a whopping big meal and then just lounging around - stomach aches, headaches, conscience pangs, and what-have-you are sure to follow.
Nothing of value in this weekly letter to Active Members will be left there, of course. Some day, some year, every bit of helpful information gets gathered up with related pieces and put together in its own study, for sale to everyone. Many of these items turn up in the monthly bulletins. But THIS WEEK’S READINGS has its place as a very small rivulet of the waters tapped in the readings of Edgar Cayce. It will flow as a quiet reminder that “there is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God.”
Many will at once begin to reckon to themselves: is this weekly letter worth the fifteen dollars needed to change my Associate Membership to Active Membership? Well, what are you looking for? Something to keep you marveling when things get dull in 1944? Try those good periodicals, LIFE and the NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC. Are you looking for a “key to the mysteries of the ages, a shortcut to the power that astonishes men”? Try the living Bible! Even if you simply seek to help a worthy organization, try your own church. And THEN, if you want to contribute to the work of a quietly moving research organization that tries to steer by the highest religious ideals - you may want to become an Active Member of the Association. You’ll receive just as many publications as we have time and materials to produce, carefully. Whether they’re worth
25 or a nickel or1000 a year depends upon how you use in your life the materials secured through this source. What would you get out of Active Membership? That question answers itself:
What would you put into it?
R3. 8/23/44 [3351]‘s letter to EC:
Dear Mr. Cayce,
Bless your dear heart - it’s too bad I was “down” when I was with you-all there. Honestly, I’ve learned so much since then that I am positively not the same person at all. I don’t think I can ever be doubtful again. I just go around with a grin on my face and near tears in my eyes. May I have no set-backs for I want to be able to help others to SEE.
Bless you and Mrs. Cayce. I pray God to free you from any lasting fatigues and that He will give you some place of privacy in your home.
I was miraculously led one afternoon, through Mrs. Baird, to the first meeting of the Study Group. With each meeting I realize more and more, and my heart sings with an assurance that I never felt before. I am deeply thankful.
Also for my greater physical energy. I am losing weight steadily and I have no sluggishness at all. I might say I now feel better than I ever remember feeling before.
As Cayce [Jones] will tell you, Margaret Hall and her Mother have asked him to stay with them and they will enjoy having him. Margaret and I have become fast friends and she has added immeasurably to my understanding. Shirley Moorman said something of coming to New York also. If she does, I shall ask her to stay with me.
My dearest love and blessings to you and Mrs. Cayce and all the others there. Margaret Patterson is dear to me also, and I’m glad she is with you. My love to all - Gladys, Mary, Jean, Gussie. I’ll write you when I can.
Margaret told me through automatic writing that a boy I have dates with whom I met at a … Dance would have something to do with a boat trip I would take, and the surprise would be a lulu!!
Good night now, and my love and Blessings to you both.
R4. 8/29/44 EC’s letter to [3351]:
Miss [3351] …, N.Y.
Dear [3351]
Thanks a lot for the note enclosed to Cayce Jones. I am glad that some of you will be looking after him while he is up there - just don’t smother him too much with goodness.
Glad to know that your group is doing so well. It is doing much better than you know. Some day I hope that I will be able to tell you about it.
Glad that you are feeling better yourself and that things are moving along nicely. Do the first things first and I am sure you know just what I mean, and there won’t be any trouble in taking care of the rest of things.
Thanks again and with every good wish, Sincerely, Edgar Cayce
R5. 12/5/44 [3351]‘s letter to EC:
Dear Mr. Cayce, -
For the Group I want to send you the enclosed check to be used for your own needs with the love and prayers of each one of us. May you soon be well and strong and happy.
We keep up with your progress through Dr. [Morton] Singer who is usually in touch with Mr. Kahn. And you are always in our thoughts and prayers.
I myself am living now with […] and her mother and can show many changes already in my life which I hope to tell you about later. Bless you for helping me to find the way and may I not prove short of serving to the best of my ability at any time and place.
If there are any things I can do for you-all, do not hesitate to call on me. Meantime, my fondest love and deepest prayers are with each one of you.
Love from [3351]
R6. 4/5/45 GD’s letter to [3351]:
Dear [3351]
It was wonderful of the Group to send the $50.00 check which arrived today. It also is wonderful to know that the members of the Group wish me to use it as I see fit.
The day Muddie Cayce’s body left for Hopkinsville, a member of the Norfolk Study Group #1 gave me this note with a $10.00 bill in it:
“I started to buy flowers with this and then I decided to turn it over to you as a sort of memorial to Mrs. Cayce to be used for the Association. I know that she has given most of her life that it might live and I hope this will fit in some small place and help keep alive the work which has given hope and life to so many.”
This is the way I am sure Muddie Cayce would want me to use your $50.00, so I am depositing it to the Association account as a contribution from the New York Study Group, in memory of Mrs. Cayce.
God bless you all. I hope to see you again before very long. It was so good to hear your voice over the phone Tuesday night and to know that you are carrying on there as we are with our Bible Group here.
Love to each one, [signed] Gladys
P.S. I’d like to see the New York Group and our Bible Group meet together sometime. They would have much in common.

B2. 1/11/44 Miss [3351]‘s letter:
To Gladys or Mae or Mrs. Cayce:-
I’m afraid you’ll be shocked at my questions; I am a little, but they’re things I’ve always wanted to know that no one else but Mr. Cayce can tell me, that arise out of my particular glandular disturbance: I’m supposed to be be a hypo-pituitary. My uneven disposition, with my nerves and moods, is a problem, and also my irregular menstrual periods. As near as I can count they come now about every three or four Months, or less, and before them I nearly go crazy! I don’t know, maybe I’m having an early change of life period; I have flushes sometimes, I hardly known what to think.
Would you be good enough to look at the questions beforehand and see if they cover what they should, stated in THIS note, and if questions should be changed, being out of bounds of a health reading?
Thank you my dear, and thank you for understanding. All my love to you all, and to Thomas Jefferson. And thanks for fixing typewriter, sorry it was broken.
