This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 5th day of November, 1943, in accordance with request made by the self - Mr. [3352], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research and Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by [3299].

GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [3352]. (He’s keeping the time pretty well.)
-
Now as we find, much might be said regarding the conditions existent here. To be sure, these are after effects of indiscretions of a nature in the body-physical forces, and then those applications to produce a better circulation and a better elimination. Though now working under quite abnormal conditions. These are in the present almost normal for this physical body of [3352].
-
The sources or causes of these have not been entirely eradicated. Thus there has not been gained full control of the body-forces through the body.
-
We find that these arose as a result of what might be called occupational disturbances; not enough in the sun, not enough of hard work. Plenty of brain work, but the body is supposed to coordinate the spiritual, mental and physical. He who does not give recreation a place in his life, and the proper tone to each phase, - well, he just fools self and will some day - as in this body in the present - be paying the price. There must be a certain amount of recreation. There must be certain amounts of rest. These are physical, mental and spiritual necessities. Didn’t God make man to sleep at least a third of his life? Then consider! This is what the Master meant when He said, “Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow.” Do they grow all the while, bloom all the while, or look mighty messy and dirty at times? It is well for people, individuals, as this entity, to get their hands dirty in the dirt at times, and not be the white-collared man all the while! These are natural sources. From whence was man made? Don’t be afraid to get a little dirt on you once in a while. You know you must eat a certain amount of dirt, else you’ll never get well balanced. For this is that from which all conditions arise. For of dust man is made, and to dust he returns. Because he doesn’t look dirty once in a while is no sign he isn’t dirty in mind, if not in body, if not in spirit. For these are one, ever one.
-
Here we have had conditions where there is the neglect of eliminations. Neglect in taking sufficient exercise in the open. Then we had a plethoric condition existing in a portion of the colon and a prolapsus in other portions, so as to overtax and burden the heart and the area between the heart, the liver, lungs and kidneys. These have brought about disorders and disturbances.
-
To meet the needs of the conditions for this body:
-
Systematically, take at regular intervals the hydrotherapy treatments including colonic irrigations, and osteopathic adjustments especially as related to a condition existing in the 3rd and 4th dorsal 5th and 6th dorsal and in the 3rd cervical.
-
Take these regularly for about six weeks, and then two or three months take another series for a week or two weeks, and we will find a great deal of difference.
-
But take time to add something to your mind mentally and spiritually. And take time to play a while with others. There are children growing. Have you added anything constructive to any child’s life? You’ll not be in heaven if you’re not leaning on the arm of someone you have helped. You have little hope of getting there unless you do help someone else.
-
Do that and live a normal life, and you’ll live a heap longer. Be worth a heap more than the position you occupy. For it is not what you do but what you really are that counts. This shines through - what you really are - much more than what you say. You can say No, or you can say Yes, but do you ask God to show partiality? Do You show partiality to others?
-
We are through with this reading.

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 10/27/43 GD’s note: Mrs. [3299] wrote expressing disappointment in her Life Rdg. because it was so BRIEF.
R2. 11/18/43 Mrs. [3299]‘s letter to GD:
…, Illinois
Dear Miss Davis:
I am addressing this report to you rather than to Mr. Cayce as I feel that he has his hands full these days and for some reason I have a strong desire to protect him from anything that might upset him.
I am writing this merely as a report on [3352]‘s physical reading (Nov. 5th) in order to complete his file in the Association’s records. I am writing it on my own volition and unknown to Mr. [3352].
I am going to quote from the reading and give my comments:
Reading: We find that these arose as a result of occupational disturbances, not enough in the sun, not enough of hard work… There must be a certain amount of recreation. There must be certain amounts of rest… It is well for individuals as this entity to get their hands dirty in the dirt at times and not be the white collared man all the while. Don’t be afraid to get a little dirt on you once in a while… Because he doesn’t look dirty is no sign he isn’t dirty in mind, if not in body.
Answer: Mr. [3352] was raised on a farm in Iowa. He has done plenty of dirt digging in youth and although now a white collared man, he is an ardent golfer and fisherman, playing golf all summer and for years, while he was physically able, playing volley ball in gymnasiums in the winter. Every year he goes up into the wilds of northern Minnesota fishing and portaging canoes and rowing and living in the open. This past summer he had a large victory garden and grubbed and hoed and weeded in it in all his spare time. This does not sound like a man who is afraid of getting dirty or who does not have any recreation.
Reading: Here we have conditions where there is neglect of elimination…systematically take at regular intervals the hydrotherapy treatments including colonic irrigations and and osteopathic adjustments.
Answer: Mr. [3352] has progressive arthritis of the spine. He has been to the Mayo clinic, the Billings clinic and in the hands of numerous specialists in this field without getting any relief. That is why he was anxious to know what Mr. Cayce might reveal. He has taken all kinds of therapy treatments, colonic irrigations and osteopathic treatments for years. However, osteopathic adjustments would be useless now because the vertebra have disintegrated and grown together in a solid mass.
Reading: Take time to add something to your mind mentally and spiritually. Take time to play a while with others. There are children growing. Have you added anything constructive to any child’s life.
Answer: Mr. [3352] is quite a student, always reading and studying things of a economical and social nature and much interested in the betterment of governments and the world in general. He is deeply involved in every civic affair of our village. He has headed the Welfare Board for years, the Baby Clinic, the Library Board, the Community Chest, the Service Men’s Committee of the Church Federation. He has been instrumental in most of the good work done for the youth of our village. He is a hard worker, and conscientious and it is because of his willingness to serve that every time there is civic work to be done it’s a case of “Let [3352] do it” and he does, giving of himself until he is physically worn out.
He has no children of his own but for years he has desired to adopt two children. He wanted to take a boy and a girl, not cute babies, but half grown youngsters who have been knocked around. He wanted to watch their young minds unfold and to be instrumental in directing them in the right direction. This never came about because his wife is a nervous temperamental type and wouldn’t shoulder the burden.
That is all there was in this reading. We thought the reading would be for ONE HOUR, as I presumed from previous arrangements made and the literature on the Association read, but this reading covered but 15 MINUTES.
Although a list of questions was asked for and sent to you, most of them were not asked or answered. I asked about his steady loss of weight; his deafness, his lack of a sense of smell. These questions were not answered. I asked that Mr. [3352] and the room he was in during the reading be described, as I understand Mr. Cayce has done in other readings. I was particularly anxious to have this information and wrote Mr. Cayce specially about it, as it would naturally remove any trace of skepticism on Mr. [3352]‘s part if this had been revealed. It was not.
I had expected that without advising you beforehand, Mr. Cayce would know that Mr. [3352] has arthritis of the spine, and how badly, but there was no mention of arthritis in the reading save for a brief reference to certain “dorsals”.
The whole reading summed up does not seem to fit Mr. [3352] either physically or in character.
Unfortunately (from reading There is a River and other literature since received from the Association) I told Mr. [3352] that Mr. Cayce would go over his body from head to foot and give him a complete analysis of his entire physical being. I was embarrassed to give Mr. [3352] the reading when it came and revealed so little.
Sincerely yours, [3299]
R3. 3/11/44 EC’s ltr. to Mrs. [3299]:
…, Illinois
Dear Mrs. [3299]:
I am due you a great apology for at least not trying to answer your letter of October, November, or any of the other dates when we should have been trying to be of more help about the information either for yourself or for Mr. [3352], but there have been hundreds and thousands of requests come in and are still coming in.
How and why, Mrs. [3299], some get so much better results than others, I don’t know. I don’t believe anyone gets any more out of them than they put into it. Please understand I am not trying to justify myself; that I know I cannot do because I know the things that we have been doing, possibly still are doing almost every day. As an individual approaches it in a critical way, the information they will receive, ninety-nine times out of a hundred, will be very critical also. Why? I don’t know, but could you read or hear the praises we receive almost daily from individuals who wire us, write us, phone us, about the results they have gotten, you would still wonder, like we, why does there ever have to be questions in anyones’s mind.
We realize, possibly one in a hundred, or one in five hundred or maybe one in a thousand get nothing. Is it the fault of the individual, or the fault with us? To the individual, of course it is fault with us. To us it might be anything, but we are certainly not condemning anyone. I just want to tell you and [3352], if you are not satisfied, please return your data and let us return your money. There are too many that are pleased, more than pleased, for the things to all be crazy, and yet that very fact makes it crazy.
I am still hoping that sometime or another you will find the time to write that little article that you were going to write for the Bulletin. I don’t care whether it’s critical or not. I want you to write it if you will; what you think people should know of your experiences.
Haven’t been so good myself for the last three or four weeks. Had an awful bad cold. Yes, as the information says, I have sinned; sin on my part, but I am not excusing myself, but hope to do better. I can by His grace, not of myself.
Let us hear from you and with every good wish, I remain
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce EC/gm

B1. 8/6/43 Mrs. [3299]‘s ltr. to EC:
Dear Mr. Cayce,
It is a real pleasure to have an excuse to write to you again. I have wanted to write ever since I received your last letter and my Life reading was arranged for October 18th. I have it marked on my calendar in bright red and even now I am trying to prepare myself for it so there won’t be any bad connections when the day of the reading comes.
There are two things I want to talk about and I hope I am not taking up too much of your valuable time - I realize how busy you are these days.
The man I work for, the President of our bank [3352], is quite a student. A mental type you might say and a fine person. However, he is in very poor physical condition with a trouble that numerous doctors have been unable to help. Lately he has been unaccountably losing weight which is an added worry. While he has not read There Is A River, he has read the literature you sent me - Life and Work of Edgar Cayce etc. and has been very much impressed. This morning, feeling quite miserable with his old trouble, he asked me if I thought you would give him a physical reading. I told him I was afraid it would be some months before you could get to him and he said “if I keep on losing weight as fast as I have been I probably won’t be here by the time the reading comes”. However, he wrote out his check and I have filled out his application and we both will appreciate it if you will give him an appointment as soon as you can. I have a feeling in my heart that you will find the cause of his trouble and what a wonderful thing that will be. In sending him his appointment date, please write your letter to me. Your letters will mean much more to me than to him and I will keep track of the date for him and see that he is in the right place at the right time and in the right frame of mind.
B2. 8/25/43 [3352]‘s ltr. to EC:
Dear Mr. Cayce,
I wish to acknowledge your letter making the appointment for my physical reading for the morning of April 18th 1944, 10:30 to 11:30 E.S.T.
This is a long time ahead and I sincerely hope that circumstances will permit you to work me in during October or early November as mentioned in your letter. The winter months are likely to bring on an acute attack so I would be very grateful for your advice before the cold weather is upon us.
Mrs. [3299] and I will work up the questions as you suggest and mail them in the near future. I will make it a point to be here at the bank at the time of the reading so you can wire me on short notice any day and I will be in the bank at …, Illinois.
Needless to say, I am looking forward to the reading.
Very sincerely yours, [3352]
Mr. Edgar Cayce Virginia Beach, Va.
B3. 9/15/43 Mrs. [3299]‘s letter: The questions I am enclosing for Mr. [3352]‘s reading so you will have them on hand should you wire us that you are ready, may not be necessary to ask. I imagine the reading itself will take care of most of them, but I am listing all of the questions we hope to have answered. I sincerely hope you will be able to get him in some time in October as you have suggested. I don’t know how you can manage this if you are booked up, unless there will be cancellations and such that will give you an open hour. I shall certainly appreciate it if it happens that way as my conscience won’t bother me so much for not giving him my time. That first question asking you to describe him and the room he is in, is an important one to me. He has not read Sugrue’s book. He only knows of you what I have told him. And while he is a student and reads and thinks a lot about God and life and its meanings, as we all do, still he is a man of the world - a banker, and so a correct answer to this question would wash away any skepticism he may possibly feel.
Many of these questions will probably already be answered during the reading but I am listing all of the questions we have in mind just in case some of them are not covered in the reading:
- Please describe Mr. [3352] and the pace in which you find him.
- Given an analysis of his existing physical condition and diagnosis of his ailments.
- What was the original cause of this condition?
- Is the cause still present in the body and is it still the source of his trouble?
- If so, can you suggest a treatment to remove it.
- What are his future prospects with the disease? Has it run its course and will not get any worse, or is he likely to have further acute attacks?
- The disease has already left its mark which cannot be eradicated, but is there any treatment, or way of living, that would improve his condition and make him more comfortable and less likely to have another acute attack?
- What is the cause of his recent steady loss of weight?
- Will you please examine his ears and tell what is causing deafness and if there is anything he can do to improve his hearing.
- Mr. [3352] says he has never had a sense of smell - what causes this and can any treatment be suggested?
