This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 5th day of December, 1943, in accordance with request made by the mother - Mrs. […], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research and Enlightenment, Inc.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. [3398]”s mother, Harmon Bro, and others.]
Time of Reading 4:00 to 4:20 P. M. Eastern War Time. …, N.J.
-
GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [3398].
-
As we find, while the conditions physically are rather serious, there will be hope, there IS hope, so long as there can be kept that desire in the body for the struggle for this life experience. So long as there can be kept those attitudes about the body and those administering for same, for the desire for expression in this experience, with the faith and the hope and trust in Him Who is life, light and immortality, there WILL be - there IS - hope!
-
Conditions have become rather complicated in the present. The inflammation through the throat, bronchi and lungs causes a great deal of distress to the body in the attempts to breathe. The reactions are gradually improving.
-
We would aid in these directions by the application of Glyco-Thymoline Packs to the front and back of the chest. These will aid in producing better reactions for the lymph and emunctory circulation, also tending to act with the fumes as well as the absorption of same to equalize the lymph and superficial circulation.
-
Sources or causes of the disturbance, as we find, are not prenatal. They are from congestions or lesions formed when there were temperatures of high natures in the body. While giving expression in the upper cervicals, the sources of these arise from lesions in the coccyx area of the body; those sources where the effects have been to locomotory centers, making for the inabilities for controlling the muscular forces - or the locomotories and the balance in the body.
-
These pressures have caused lesions in the lacteal duct center. This is that area of the first patches of the lymph circulation through the upper intestinal tract, that cold area that is oft experienced by the body when there are the convulsions producing incoordination between sympathetic and cerebrospinal systems, causing contraction, the drawing even at times in the back of the neck and lower portion of the head areas.
-
The administrations of properties or sedatives to keep down the convulsions have caused congestions, enlargings in the mouth and base of brain.
-
As we find, then, these will necessarily require meeting the varied conditions as they arise.
-
First, then, we would make those applications of the Glyco-Thymoline Packs to rid the body of the mucous, the phlegm, the inflammation through the chest, bronchi and throat areas. Apply these not constantly, but for two or three hours each day, keeping them warm. If they cause too great a struggle when the seizures come on, by having the heat, remove them. But do keep applying them.
-
Do keep the circulation by the massages of the extremities and the body-forces themselves; raising the body from the secondary cardiac plexus area will start blood flow better than from any portion of the body - this at the 3rd and 4th dorsal center.
-
Then, when there is an improvement, - under the direction of such an one as Marion Dick, - have those corrections made osteopathically in the coccyx, in the sacral areas; not too severe in the beginning but gradually, keeping up the Packs when necessary to keep the body-forces attuned.
-
It is necessary to keep up the phenobarbitol during the periods while the corrections are being made.
-
If there is the response - in the course of the next four to five months - then apply the Castor Oil Packs over the lacteal duct and gall duct area; not too severe. These should be applied warm, then adding the electric pad to drive same in.
-
Afterward sponge off the body with a strong soda water. Then massage gently. We must break up the lesions, if we will reduce the convulsions, so that an equilibrium may be established. We must break those lesions in the coccyx and sacral area before those in the 1st cervical, 2nd and 3rd cervical may be relaxed sufficiently for there to be normal reactions to the body.
-
Do keep up the strengthening food values, but do give the body beef juice. Not soup but beef juice. Give a teaspoonful of this each day, or two teaspoonsful - not more than that. This should be given more as drops than as spoonsful, though, so that proper assimilation may take place. A teaspoonful of this taken during a day will be more strengthening than a glassful of the eggnog. A teaspoonful may be taken during the morning and a teaspoonful in the afternoon, if it is sipped slowly so as to be properly assimilated.
-
Eggnog will be strengthening for the respiratory system and heart activity. Use the yolk of an egg and a little spiritus frumenti, with only a tiny bit of milk, or it may be taken with orange juice.
-
These will be strengthening for the body. Take sufficient of these each day to keep the strength. These are only additions to the other foods.
-
When the massages are given, don’t try to begin on the neck first. Begin on the small of the back and the coccyx and the sacral and lumbar area, and just sufficient in the upper dorsal and through the cervical to keep a constant flow - more as a massage. And let it be such as to treat the superficial circulation rather than the deep circulation. For the heart life is strong. Don’t let it fade in this body.
-
If there is the response, these will bring help - if there is kept that attitude and the hope in the body.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Will she ever be normal mentally, able to walk and talk? (A) This depends upon the response, and upon how consistent and persistent. As given, so long as there is that sincere desire, so long as there is the life hope, these are possibilities. For, who healeth thy diseases? In whom do we have life, light and immortality? This entity-soul is purposeful in the lives of many. Keep it in His care.
-
(Q) What causes the lips to turn blue? (A) The circulation. As given, do keep the massage. When there is the breaking up of the lesions in the gall duct and lacteal duct area - in some six or eight or twelve months - when these are cleansed, use for the massage this combination of oils - first an equal combination of Olive Oil and Tincture of Myrrh (heating the oil to add the myrrh), and later these proportions; or these may be used from the beginning:
Olive Oil…2 ounces, Tincture of Myrrh…2 ounces, Lanolin (liquefied)…1/4 ounce.
These should not be too severe, but do break up the lesions - and we will get those seizures farther and farther apart.
- (Q) Has the brain tissue been destroyed? (A) No, not brain tissue. It is in the medulla oblongata where the heaviness has come in base of brain, but the lesions are in the lower portion of the spine and in the lacteal duct. That is why it has been so hard for the body to swallow or to assimilate. Hence those oils being given are already prepared for assimilation by the body, for strength-giving.
This is serious, but keep the faith.
- We are through with this Reading.

Reports
Reports & Follow-up
R1. 12/5/43 Report from mother orally after reading: “[3398] born December 19, 1936, Phila., Pa., normal delivery. Child perfectly normal with no illnesses until the age of sixteen months, when it contracted strep infection in nose, throat and ears - ears lanced several times; sulfanilimide given in powder form every four hours daily - evidenced great pain at back of neck, screaming if touched there. Doctor called it swollen glands - in bed two months and ears drained for eight weeks. Immediately following in what should have been a convalescent period a gradual loss of ability to sit up straight. Child stared into space, dropped toys, screamed and cried or laughed without cause. Doctors called it still a convalescent period. Six months after her illness a change of doctors, consultation with specialists said it could only be arsenic poisoning and treated her for six months without being able to prove that she had it. Mother feels treatments were for lack of anything else to do, based on blackness of teeth…doctors wanted an encephalogram which she refused to have. Had a spinal tap and found nothing. A doctor diagnosed it as ‘porphenuria,’ experienced only in China and India before - patient dies after exposed to sun for 24 hours
- called an astounding discovery and mother wrote it up for medical journals. Recovery promised in a few months - but the mother knew she had always given the child sun baths. During these treatments a urine analysis sent to Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research as a matter of form. Report came back negative, meaning she didn’t have the disease at all. Doctor then said nothing to do but to experiment further. Another doctor then a leading neurologist, and a consultation with the doctors who had treated her during first illness - agreed that it was either meningitis or infection through mastoid area, destroying brain tissue - predicted child would walk when 6 or 7, become trainable but never normal, subject to convulsions, which she had not yet had. Two weeks later started having more than twenty convulsions a day, taking various forms and over a period of years followed a pattern or cycle. He suggested treatment of drugs which could reduce the cycle and lengthen normal periods, This was done - belladonna did not control the convulsions, which seemed to be intestinal with great pain
- formation of gas. After trial and error experienced that convulsions and pain could be alleviated by enemas. Phenobarbitol doses increased but failed to help and then dilantin - claimed to be strongest controlling drug - Used it and it was more successful than the pheno., but over a period of a year the gum tissues thickened, swallowing difficult - discovered that these were normal reactions from the drug and began to use Vitamin C, which were administered in large doses, but the mouth still very abnormal. Taken off of dilantin and put back on pheno., which is now used in smaller doses to control the convulsions. Bronchial pneumonia three weeks ago - three doctors, one a surgeon, one a child specialist, one a neurologist, said she couldn’t live
- put into an oxygen mask - went into a state of shock when temperature dropped from 104 to 97, which said was the end. But she rallied and is now convalescing. Mother has had to pull phlegm out of throat with the finger. Three more serious convulsions last week the first of the type for eight months. Examined last April by an osteopath who is a brain specialist, famous - claimed lesion at base of skull and said it could be corrected and child could be brought to normalcy within a year.”
R2. 12/6/43 EC’s letter to Mrs. [3051]: ”…You may be sure we will do the very best possible for your friend. Have had so many very serious emergencies lately that I am about batty myself, but each day there seems to be one or more. Yesterday, a lady drove in here about 7:30; had driven all night to get here. Her little girl - just most at death’s door, now what could I do with every possible moment promised. Don’t recall having heard from your friend, but how could I - there are dozens of them each day…”
R3. 1/23/44 Letter to EC from mother’s friend, Miss […]: “I’ve been wanting to write to you since I witnessed a reading you gave for my very dear friend […]. I wish I were articulate enough to write how very much I was impressed and awed by my experience. If ever I felt that I was a witness to something that was apart from this world, something holy and yet terrifying in the sense that the shepherds were terrified when they heard the voice of the angel, it was on that memorable December 5th day. The reading you gave for [3398] was a wonderful one in that there was so much hope and promise in it, and at last clarified, for me at least, the trouble that has been a part of that innocent little child.
”[…] immediately contacted Dr. Dick who, I’m afraid, was not too encouraging. I wish I could inject into Dr. Dick my faith and belief in that reading. I was never more sure that given the treatment and time you suggest that the proper results would be forthcoming.
“Unfortunately there have been some setbacks to hinder the taking of the necessary measures and circumstances make it almost impossible for Dr. Dick to undertake the complete treatment for [3398]‘s recovery. If only there was the hospital that once you had! There is nothing in this world that would give me more joy than to see [3398] able to walk and talk. My wildest imagination could not completely comprehend the blessed joy that would be the mother’s if that were to happen.
“If you have not heard from Mrs. […], it is only because she has had to be the constant nurse not only for [3398] but for her mother, too. I know she is as grateful to you as I am for the hope and promise you have given. You are blessed with the gratitude of many to whom you have brought joy, and to that ever growing group you may add mine and […]‘s and all of our friends and relatives who hold her and [3398] dear.”
R4. 2/20/44 Mother’s friend’s letter to EC: “I hope to give you a very detailed report concerning [3398] very soon. Dr. Dick has helped very much, and while [3398] is responding, we think to the treatments, there is much to be overcome before she can be relieved of much suffering. I am very much grieved when I see how very difficult it is for her to breath and I know you, too, would have nothing but compassion and sympathy for her. I think Mrs. […] will be writing soon to ask for a check reading. Surely there must be some immediate relief available for [3398].”
R5. 2/28/44 Mother’s letter to EC: “As a result of a condition which has lasted for two weeks, I would like a check reading for [3398] as soon as possible. The answering of the following questions would help both Dr. Dick and myself in treating [3398] since Dr. Dick has given me a routine massage to be given each day at home.
(1) When [3398] breathes rapidly, then holds her breath, distending the abdominal wall, is she using this as a defense against pain? (2) The lower ribs protrude at all times. Dr. Dick thinks this is a result of the above habit. Is this correct? What can be done to correct this malformation? (3) The lips turn blue, [3398] seems to be in a semi-conscious state following the repeated abnormal breathings. She recovers with a jerk, the blood returns to lips, nails and tongue. A gurgling in the upper intestines is audible. Does the intestinal disturbance cause the abnormal breathing or is it just the reverse? What can be done to correct the condition? (4) Do the abdominal massages aggravate or alleviate the intestinal disturbance? (5) Are any foods responsible for the gas formation? If so, what? (6) Why is [3398] passing large amounts of mucous in her bowel movements in the last two weeks? (7) What can be done to correct the mucous condition? (8) Why are her movements liquid instead of formed stools? (9) Have any corrections as suggested in the Reading been made? If so, what? (10) Has the treatment for the spinal curvature produced any relief to [3398]? (11) Are the treatments too severe? (12) Should any adjustments be made to the neck osteopathically? (13) Why does [3398] usually object to even a simple massage of the legs and feet? (14) Is it fear or pain she feels when I attempt to put her in a standing position? Should I do this? (15) [3398] will not hold on to an object with her right hand. Why? What can be done to correct this? (16) What can be done to reduce the thickened gum tissues? (17) What can be done to correct the structure of the roof of her mouth which changed after the administering of dilantin? (18) Since [3398] makes visible efforts to speak, what is holding her back? Is it lack of brain interpretation of sound or does the thickened tissue in the mouth present a speech difficulty? What can be done to help her? (19) Should the oils suggested in the Reading be used for the massages now? (20) Should the castor oil packs be used now?
“Mr. Cayce I had this typed to facilitate the reading. [3398] is very much disturbed with this intestinal condition. The presence of bacteria doesn’t suggest itself to me because there is an absence of fever. The continuance of it presents an entirely new picture to me therefore I am anxious to know if the treatments are the cause.
“To question the treatments defeats the purpose of the Reading so I beg of you to give me a check reading. If the cost is more than the enclosed amount I’ll send the difference on request.
“May God bless you for the hope and guidance you have given me.”
Very gratefully yours, […]
R6. 4/13/44 Mother’s letter to EC: “During the check reading for [3398] on April 22nd, I would like the following questions asked. [3398] will be at …, Philadelphia, during the time of the reading.”
(1) Should the phenobarbitol be reduced? (2) What can be done to induce natural bowel movements and overcome constipation? (3) Is there any physical abnormality of the intestines? (4) Is there any improvement mentally or physically not noticeable to us? (5) What causes [3398] to fall into a deep unnatural sleep suddenly from which it is almost impossible to wake her? (6) When [3398] breathes rapidly, then holds her breath, distending the abdominal wall, is she using this as a defense against pain? (7) The lower ribs protrude at all times. Dr. Dick thinks this is a result of the above habit. Is this correct? What can be done to correct this malformation? (8) The lips turn blue, she seems to be in a semi-conscious state following the repeated abnormal breathings. She recovers with a jerk, the blood returns to lips, nails and tongue. A gurgling in the upper intestines is audible. Does the intestinal disturbance cause the abnormal breathing or is it just the reverse? What can be done to correct the condition? (9) Do the abdominal massages aggravate or alleviate the intestinal disturbance? (10) Are any foods responsible for the gas formation or mucous in the intestines? If so, what? (11) What can be done to correct the mucous and gas condition? (12) Have any corrections as suggested in the reading been made? If so, what? (13) Has the treatment for the spinal curvature produced any relief to her? (14) Are the treatments too severe? (15) Should any adjustments be made to the neck osteopathically? (16) Why does she usually object to even a simple massage of the legs and feet? (17) Is it fear or pain she feels when I attempt to put her in a standing position? Should I do this? (18) Should she have the support of shoes at this time? (19) One leg seems to be shorter than the other. Is this caused by a malformation of bone structure in the pelvic region, leg, or is it due to spinal curvature? What can be done to overcome this? (20) What causes a periodic disturbance in the region of the vagina? What can be done to correct it? (21) [3398] will not hold on to an object with her right hand. Why? What can be done to correct this? (22) What can be done to reduce the thickened gum tissues? (23) What can be done to correct the structure of the roof of her mouth which changed after the administering of dilantin? (24) Since she makes visible efforts to speak, what is holding her back? Is it lack of brain interpretation of sound or does the thickened tissue in the mouth present a speech difficulty? What can be done to help her? (25) Should the oils suggested in the reading be used for the massages now? (26) Should the castor oil packs be used now?
Sincerely, […]
R7. 4/15/44 Mother’s letter to EC: “[3398] has been observed so carefully for I’ve always felt the doctors have just generally given her up. I’ve never been satisfied for even with visible physical symptoms such as are evident with the disturbance at the vagina no one knows what causes it or can give suggestions as to treatment.
“While doctors are looking for symptoms to fit a description of a case already written in a book, I’ve tried to observe [3398] never passing up any little detail of behavior or physical or mental reaction.
“Therefore my quantity of questions. Answering one may explain others but I do sincerely hope and pray the check reading will give a clear, definite picture and method of procedure for treatment.
“Dr. Dick has often said, ‘Now, if I were treating [3398] I would do thus or so,’ but I have insisted on the following of the reading.
“It is a responsibility to make a decision for [3398] against the judgment of the doctor treating her but I believe in you and firmly believe God is using you as an instrument to relieve the suffering of [3398].
“May God bless you and keep you in good health. I’ll be waiting anxiously for the check reading,”
Gratefully yours, […]

B1. 12/2/43 Mother’s letter to Mr. Cayce: “As yet I have not received a reply to my letter but I talked with you on the phone this morning.
“Your suggestion of getting in touch with Dr. Souden [Soden] or Dr. Dick to further understand your work I have not followed as yet for very good reasons I hope.
“Every type doctor from the small town doctor to endless specialists; observations at the University Hospital and The Children’s Hospital; a trip to East Orange for an examination by Dr. Sutherland whom you no doubt know; all add up to a hopeless feeling as far as doctors are concerned. Unless one would be guided by your reading.
“Can you possibly understand my reaction when I read about Mrs. Dietrich and her child?
“Today when I returned from Phila. and looked into [3398]‘s eyes I remembered your words - ‘Perhaps after the first of the year or not until April -’
“Can I wait? Of course I’ll wait - for five years I’ve watched my baby girl suffer, naturally and from doctor’s tests. I refuse to allow medical men to experiment with [3398].
“The question is Mr. Cayce can my [3398] wait? She must be fed, carried and cared for like a baby yet her eyes strive to make me understand.
“I live in dread of the time when physically I’ll be unable to carry her.
“I weigh about 100 lbs. My former weight was 125 lbs. To her I give my everything.
“Everywhere there is human misery. I don’t doubt your sincerity in trying to help all you can.
“I’m sure God will guide you and that you will see your way clear, to at least let me know if [3398] was born with this affliction and that it didn’t show up until later or did the illness cause it and of course do you think she will ever be normal.
“Mr. Cayce while I’m very emotional as far as [3398] is concerned, I’m not without the ability to think. In fact if you said [3398] would never get better you would be but one more to many others who have voiced that thought. But still I believe God will someday touch my beautiful girl and she will rise and walk and say, ‘Mother’ - a word I’ve never heard her speak.” Sincerely, […]
