This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 3rd day of January, 1944, in accordance with request made by the self - Mr. [3428], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research and Enlightenment, Inc.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. Harmon Bro.]
Time of Reading 11:10 to 11:25 A. M. Eastern War Time. …, N.Y.
-
GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here.
-
As we find, there are disturbances with this body. Much of these, however, are tied up with the emotional natures of the body. And here we find some of those conditions of which many bodies should be warned - the opening of centers in the body-spiritual without correctly directing same, which may oft lead to wrecking of the body-physical and sometimes mental.
-
Know where you are going before you start out, in analyzing spiritual and mental and material things.
-
This is not belittling the seeking of knowledge, neither is it advising individuals - or this individual - to seek knowledge. But knowledge without the use of same still remains, as in the beginning, sin. And be sure your sins will find you out!
-
Here we have an emotional body well versed in the study of meditation, the study of transmission of thought, with the ability to control others.
-
Don’t control others. Suppose thy God controlled thee without thy will? What would you become, or what would you have been?
-
But you were made in the image of thy Creator, to be a companion with Him - not over someone else, but a companion with thy brother and not over thy brother. Hence do not act that way, because ye have the greater ability or greater knowledge of control of others.
-
Then, as we would give for this body - for this is psychological as well as pathological - we would begin again to study - this time the Book.
-
Begin with Exodus 19:5.
-
Then read again and know thoroughly the 20th chapter of Exodus.
-
Study then thoroughly and apply personally the 30th of Deuteronomy, and apply it in the terms of the 23rd Psalm.
-
Thus ye will make thyself new.
-
As to physical applications:
-
At least once each week we would have a general hydrotherapy treatment, including first a mild Cabinet Sweat followed by a needle shower, and then a massage using this combination of oils:
Olive Oil (heated)…2 ounces, Tincture of Myrrh…2 ounces, Calamus Oil…10 drops.
Massage these oils into the spine itself, also in the areas especially of the ribs, around each rib, around the central bone or sternum or breastbone, around the collarbone, especially over the areas of the 9th dorsal, 11th and 12th dorsals, and throughout the sacral areas.
-
If we will do these, we will find much bettered conditions for this body.
-
The abilities are unlimited, but as the warnings are given in Exodus as well as in Deuteronomy, know how they may be centralized for thy brethren in “The Lord is my shepherd” and not Mr. [3428] but thy Lord, thy God.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Is the focal center of the disease in the brain or some other part of the body? (A) As indicated, it is in those centers - the seven centers of the body - where sympathetic and cerebrospinal coordinate the more; 1st, 2nd and 3rd cervical; 1st and 2nd dorsal; 5th and 6th dorsal; 9th dorsal; 11th and 12th dorsal; and through the lumbar and sacral areas. These are the sources. This is not an infection - it is the lack of coordination between the impulses of the mental self and the central nerve and blood supply.
-
(Q) Are there any organic changes due to the disease? (A) All of the organic changes are due to this condition, of lack of coordination.
-
(Q) Does sexual expression or repression cause this condition, or have any effect on same? (A) This was a part of the beginnings of it; for when the lyden (Leydig) glands are opened, which are in the gonads - or the centers through which the expression of generation begins, they act directly upon the centers through the body. Unless these find expression they disintegrate, or through thy association cause dis-association in impulse and the central or body-nerves.
-
(Q) Are there any mental attitudes involved in the cause of this disease? (A) As indicated.
Do as outlined - we will have the results, according to thy faith and thy works; not by faith alone but by faith AND works.
- We are through with this Reading.

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 1/6/44 [3428]‘s letter to EC: “First, I want to thank you very much for my reading, which I received this morning. I can’t really tell you how grateful I am for the reading. Let me assure you, that I shall try my utmost to carry out all of the suggestions made therein - both the spiritual part as well as the pathological.
“By now you must have received the letter which I wrote you on Tues. (Jan. 4th) in reply to your Air-Mail letter, requesting my mother’s address. IN MY PREVIOUS LETTER, I told you - that DESPITE EVERYTHING, I felt so VERY CONFIDENT, that ‘GOD WOULD LEAD YOU TO ME - regardless wherever I might be at that hour.’ Such was the case, for I noticed her address on the reading. Evidently, I did include same, in one of my earlier letters. I was so worried about that & now am so relieved.
“Now as to the reading itself: MOST OF IT, I believe, that I UNDERSTAND, & SHOULD BE ABLE TO CARRY OUT. There are some things therein, which are not totally clear to me, as yet, but I believe, that after I discuss it with some of my friends, they will help me to get a clearer understanding of same. Here are a few of the things I don’t fully understand. You say: at least, once each week we would have a general hydrotherapy treatment, including first a mild Cabinet Sweat followed by a needle shower, etc.’ I don’t quite understand what is meant by ‘hydrotherapy treatment’ - I know that ‘hydro’ pertains to water - so I presume this means baths. I am of the opinion that by ‘mild Cabinet Sweat’ - you mean that I sit or place myself in one of those canvas cabinets and let the steam or vapor cause my body to sweat mildly. I presume that I might be able to do this in my own home (I believe I can borrow or buy a cabinet) - or if necessary - go to a public bath house & have that all done there. As for the massage, I’m not worried about that part, for I have a friend who is a practical nurse, & I presume that she might be able to handle that part - or else I can get my doctor or someone - perhaps my mother, to do that for me. Do you think it necessary that I should have an osteopath or a masseur do that? I personally think that any nurse could do that part. Then you mention ‘needle shower’. I know what a needle shower is - but few homes have one, & I wondered whether an ordinary shower bath would suffice - or whether I could use an ordinary bath spray instead - that is - a regular head of a shower, & spray the water upon my body from different angles, while I am taking my shower. I can appreciate what better effects might be obtained thru the use of a needle shower - that is - to invigorate or stimulate the nerves, etc.
“I believe that PERHAPS at the Y.M.C.A., they may have both the needle shower - and also the cabinets (for sweating). I may be able to arrange to do that there - & also have one of my friends massage me as you outlined.
“I noticed, that you asked ONLY those questions which my friend, […], suggested. I asked you 4 questions - & I was rather interested to know about 1. the use of sedatives, such as phenobarbital & Dilantin. 2. Whether or not […]‘s part could be reproduced by any other girl, or whether I was in love with her, etc., or whether I should even try to. 3. Whether Dr. Kauffman’s theory was correct. Sometime - perhaps you may be able to send me some data thereto. I DON’T WANT YOU TO MAKE ANOTHER READING JUST TO ASCERTAIN THAT DATA - but if you will refer to my earlier letter - say about a month or less ago - perhaps you may be able to see these questions, & then set my mind at ease regarding same. Possibly you might ask these, after another reading.
“Now about the Spiritual part. You mention: ‘Don’t control others.’ Believe me - I have always tried to be humble - in my heart as well as in my conduct. It is true, that within me, was a fierce, fire-like burning rage to try to become the head of everything I attempted - like ambition, or so to speak - ‘the life of the party.’ However, people sort of shunned me - or avoided me - I presume, because of my attacks. I don’t mean to be obnoxious or over-bearing upon anyone. I always TRY to HELP & LEAD & not to force my opinions or ideas upon others. I try always - to improve, to help - & not to obstruct or reduce the harmony between my fellowman & myself. This applies also to my work. All my life I have seen only one word - ‘CONSTRUCTION not DESTRUCTION.’
“I understand what you mean when you say, ‘Know where you are going, etc.’ Prior to that - you mention: ‘the opening of centers in the body-spiritual without correctly directing same,’ etc. I don’t understand that part - & would appreciate your further enlightenment there upon.
“I will continue my study of the Bible - & will contact some of my Rabbinical friends to help me secure more interpretations thereof, etc. There is much improvement for me in that realm. However, I have always tried to help others - earnestly & I was sincere in that. I can find ways of improvement. I am sure that in general, MY MOTIVE in trying to help others is genuine. Oftentimes I tell people about things that they never knew about - especially religious matters, or about current events, as it affects Palestine or matters pertaining to our economic set-up, etc. My intent in all this is sound, but perhaps I may be wrong in trying to convince others about such matters. I do have, or as one rabbi told me - ‘you were blessed with an unusual amount of perseverance.’ That may account for my wanting ‘to control others.’
“Here is some news which may perhaps be encouraging to you. Our Dist. Eng. told us that the State of N.Y. was about to embark upon a huge construction program (3 yrs.) to have jobs for our Armed Service men who would be discharged from the Service & others released from plants in War Production. We must have our maps & plans out by JUNE 1ST - at least for 1st year. It looks like an early cessation to hostilities in Europe - for those ‘big shots’ don’t start planning unless they are quite sure where they are going, etc. That may mean that POSSIBLY, Hugh Lynn may be home (perhaps) sometime this year. I’ll send you more detailed information, should you desire it - upon this matter. They talk of doubling our present force - so you can see, that there is something to all this. They have the funds, etc.
“Well - let me thank you again, & as soon as I can get over this cold - I’ll start taking those hydrotherapy treatments, etc. I have already begun to study the Book - & I shall certainly continue to follow your suggestions.
“With all good wishes, I remain, Very sincerely, [3428]
P.S. “No news as yet from Hugh Lynn.”
POSTSCRIPT:
“The more I reflect upon this phrase ‘Don’t control others,’ the deeper do I see its meaning. Even tho’ I have re-read the Reading many, many times, I still do not find a satisfactory meaning or interpretation. The best I can arrive at is something like this. I have always been mentally active - or really OVER-active, whether it concerned my own economic welfare - or pertaining to my work or even at play. I am a ‘child of the Virgo’ - & the same characteristics remain: that is the thoroughness - the general aptitude for detail especially in technical fields. Thus I did a lot of unnecessary ‘mental grinding’ - ‘or mental bicycle riding’ which produced excess fatigue. WHAT I SHOULD DO - is RELAX MORE, MENTALLY. In essence - THAT, I BELIEVE IS WHAT IS MEANT.”
R2. 1/8/44 [3428]‘s letter to EC:
“I am now home (in …) for the week-end. By ‘control of others’, I think you mean - JUST TAKE THINGS EASY - don’t try to take the worries upon myself of doing everything for the entire world. Let the other fellows use their own processes or methods. Try to be ‘less tense’ - & MORE CHEERFUL, instead of WORRYING for everyone - or about seeing that my work is done properly, or most efficiently, etc. In essence
- this part, pertains to my LIVING A MORE QUIET or BALANCED LIFE. The physical applications, perhaps, I may best be able to carry out by going to some public bath house - where they have all the necessary equipment for such, as well as an EXPERIENCED PERSON who UNDERSTANDS WHERE & HOW to MASSAGE me.
Does the needle shower mean to use COLD water - or as cold as I can stand it - or lukewarm - or hot water? I PRESUME - you mean, after the sweat, I take a shower to wash myself clean - then use the COLD water for the needle shower. After all this - then the massage.
R3. 1/9/44 [3428]‘s letter:
“After considerable study of the Reading, as well as collaboration with my friends, I am beginning to understand more clearly, its meaning, & also how logical & accurate it all is.
“Here is what I consider a resume of the Reading. Relax - take things easier, & less seriously. Be less active - mentally. Don’t be so tense, or anxious, or worried. In helping me to develop such mental habits, you advise the study of the Bible. This is how a normal person should live - more tranquil - more serene - A BALANCED LIFE.
“Then to aid in strengthening my nervous system - & especially these 7 pts. or Centers of the body - you advise the sweat (to eliminate some of the poisons, etc. - then the needle shower, which would stimulate & invigorate the nerves & strengthen same). The massage is intended to ‘help loosen my nerves’ - & to help re-inforce the curative efforts, or effects developed thru reduced mental fatigue - plus the strengthening of nerves or nervous centers, by use of the needle shower.
“This is a very crude description or explanation, but I do think the basic ideas are included. Of course, the spiritual part is a highly important factor, too.
“Someday, I hope to visit you, & talk with you, in person. In the meantime, I want to include another small offering, which you can use as you deem best. It is small - but it is something.
“Again let me thank you for everything and now I begin my task with determined effort - renewed hope, and may God grant me worthy to receive my normal health. With all good wishes, I remain,”
Very sincerely, [3428]
R4. 2/3/44 [3428]‘s letter to EC:
“Thank you for your long delayed letter of Jan. 29, which clarifies practically all the questions in my mind concerning my reading. Thus far, I have concentrated entirely upon the suggestions made regarding the study of the Book, & also, upon refraining from trying to control others. Thus far, I have been unable to take any of the Hydrotherapy treatments, because our local physio-therapist has been ill with the grippe. I had an appt. with him last week, but his wife phoned me, & he was forced to postpone same. I asked you about discontinuing my medication during these months, but no reference was made in the reading regarding same. However, upon further consultation with a friend, who is a pharmacist - he advised that I continue taking same as usual. Your letter now fixes that.
“The money which I sent in my previous letter was for the Ass’n. or for YOU TO USE AS YOU DEEM BEST. I promised that I would send you a little as time goes along - as I can spare it. I thought I did explain that in my previous letter.
“Now I have some interesting things to tell you - & you’ll find it in my scribbling. Last Sat., I received the interesting issue of the Bulletin, of the 9 different classifications that any Active Member can do. I made a note of at least 4 OR 5 that I as an Active Member - have done - & CAN DO. It is interesting to note that thru me (not that I’m looking for any thanks or praise or glory, or ‘Kored’, as it is called in Hebrew) - at least 12 - 20 or more different people have already read the book, THERE IS A RIVER - as well as ALL the BULLETINS & OTHER CORRESPONDENCE sent me. This group, even though spread over an area including 3 large cities - & about 100-150 miles apart - are all interested in this work. I make it my business to keep them all fully informed, & each one reads your Bulletins right up to date - because they are interested in my own case - & also your work. Rest assured, I shall be alert for anything & anyway in which I can help the Ass’n. There is one particular way in which I WANT to help - & I believe that I can accomplish most - & that is, to CONVINCE THE ENTIRE MEDICAL FRATERNITY that they SHOULD COOPERATE, WILLINGLY, etc. They should consider it a RARE PRIVILEGE to do so & it will net them HUGE RESULTS!!! First - I’m going to tackle my own LOCAL and county groups. This includes all the physicians, each one at a time -, surgeons, dentists, druggists, osteopaths, chiropractors, nurses, physiotherapists, and every other group which comprise or are members of the entire Medical Fraternity - yes, even the HOSPITALS & ALSO CONVALESCENT HOMES, etc. Let each member (in his own hometown or County) discuss it with some of his local practising doctors, etc. The way a physician becomes successful - is by accomplishing definite results. Everybody wants a physician who DOES GET RESULTS. He, the patient, does not object paying for this same man’s services - regardless whether he gets any results for the patient or not. Jokingly - if a physician guesses right - he is acclaimed or considered a wonder - an outstanding man in his field. If he guesses wrongly, the physician merely buries his mistakes. Now then - from the results of say 1000 cases - WE CAN DEFINITELY PROVE that the Readings lead to the proper solution, whereas, the efforts of the entire Medical Fraternity up to that time - had been futile. Imagine how they would profit through such cooperation - not merely in a financial way - but having the satisfaction of helping people to get well - the sense of accomplishment & the SPIRITUAL SATISFACTION. I could continue writing for pages, but I’m positive you understand. Now don’t think I don’t realize the size of this problem. I know it won’t be easy - & I expect to encounter all sorts of objections & all the innumerable ramifications, etc. I have already talked to a few of my local friends & they told me - ‘I don’t want to have anything to do with it, etc.’ I mention this merely to emphasize the fact - as you suggested in MY OWN reading - ‘Know where you are going before you analyze spiritual, mental, material things.’”
R5. 2/19/44 [3428]‘s letter to EC:
“I enclosing Hugh Lynn’s letter which I received only yesterday. I thought that perhaps you & your family would enjoy reading it. When you are finished with it, will you kindly return same to me, as I want to keep it as a souvenir. Perhaps I’ll be able to show him this, in person, someday - soon.
“I also wanted to enclose a copy of the 38th chap. of the Book of Ecclesiasticus (taken from the Apocrpha), but I find that I do not have one here, at my home, in … I presume that you must have the Apocrpha, & can refer to it. This is a very important matter, because there are statements herein which concern all of us, & it DEFINITELY refers to men like yourself. It is my opinion that these thoughts may interest a large number of the members of the Ass’n, & perhaps, may deserve mention in the Bulletin. Here is what I mean: It says - ‘Honor the physician with all of the honor due unto him, for of the MOST HIGH, COMETH HEALING’. Certainly, even tho’ you may not be a practicing or a licensed physician (as such) yet you have helped lead & are NOW helping to lead thousands of people back to normal health, where the entire Medical Fraternity have failed. In that sense, you are really MORE than a physician, for you (thru God) have helped to heal their ailments, etc. It specifically states ‘of the MOST HIGH, COMETH HEALING’. Now we are accustomed to look up to the physician with much respect, etc., but how about those physicians who do NOT SUCCEED in curing their patients? Then here is one valid reason why you should be respected all the more, because you have helped find a solution for innumerable physical ills, where even they, themselves admit. that they have failed. I notice, that the average reading is phrased in Biblical terms, & ALWAYS includes the general plan or teachings of the Bible. Now, in this chap., it states - ‘My son, in thy sickness, be not negligent, but CLEANSE thine heart from all wickedness…give a fat offering, sacrifice (to the Lord) & HE will make thee whole.’ In one Hospital, there is this phrase ‘Doctors operate - but ONLY GOD HEALS’. To emphasize how important the medium of prayer, faith meditation, etc., is, it even includes ‘there are times, when in THEIR HANDS (the physicians), there is good success - but even HE (the physician) must also pray - that the LORD WILL HELP HIM to accomplish & prosper for that which HE gives, to ease - & prolong life & to increase good health, etc.’ It seems to me, that in this chapter, there are many lessons to be learned & much to be gained & it is well worth our careful study & thought. Of course, there are other ideas included herein, but I am pointing out only a few.
“Perhaps some people may not consider the Apocrpha as being authentic, because these books were not included in the Bible. That is up to each individual. Yet the wisdom contained herein is something which I feel certain, we are all in agreement with. However that may be, at least, the ideas contained in this chap., are certainly worth thinking about, & that is why I am calling them to your attention, at this time.
“Regarding my own reading, altho I have had only one physical treatment so far, yet I can readily see how effective these Hydrotherapy treatments are, for I see how much better I feel
- not as the result from the physical treatments alone, but because of carrying out all the suggestions made in the reading. My greatest difficulty up to now, has NOT been the refusal of the physio-therapist to cooperate, but mainly because they are so busy, that it has been well nigh impossible to get an appointment with any of them, during those hours when I am free, or not working. Last night, I had a talk with the physio-therapist at our local Y.M.C.A., & I arranged to have him do it for me. They have a ‘hot’ room - also a steam room, but no cabinets.
“Instead of lying in a cabinet to produce a mild cabinet sweat, as suggested in the reading, I presume that I can get the same results in either the hot room or the steam room. Also, although they have no needle shower at the ‘Y’, they do have a very powerful shower in their shower room - with an adjustable shower head, & I think that I might be able to use that shower to produce the equivalent effect as I could obtain thru the use of a needle shower. As far as the massage is concerned, both men are licensed physio-therapists, & very experienced men - that is, the man at the ‘Y’, as well as the private man whom I visited first, so I believe that part will not vary. I am trying to do the best I can, with the tools I have to WORK WITH. At least, it won’t hurt to try it this way. I had no idea that it would take this long, to find the required man, & all other facilities, etc. If you have any comments to offer on these methods of treatment, I would appreciate them, very much. [3428]”
R6. 3/2/44 HLC’s letter returned to him.
38th Chapter of Ecclesiasticus - Apocrypha HONOUR a physician with the honor due unto him for the uses which ye may have of him: for the Lord hath created him. For of the most High cometh healing, And he shall receive honour of the king. The skill of the physician shall lift up his head: And in the sight of the great men he shall be in admiration. The Lord hath created medicines out of the earth: And he that is wise will not abhor them. Was not the water made sweet with wood, that the virtue thereof might be known? And he hath given men skill, that he might be honoured in his marvellous works. With such doth he heal (men) and taketh away their pains. Of such doth the apothecary make a confection; Of his works there is no end; And from him is peace over all the earth. My son, in thy sickness be not negligent: But pray unto the Lord, and he will make thee whole. Leave off from sin, and order thine hands aright, and cleanse thy heart from all wickedness. Give a sweet savour, and a memorial of fine flour. Make a fat offering, as not being. Then give place to the physician, for the Lord hath created him: Let him not go from thee, for thou hast need of him. There is a time when in their hands there is good success. For they shall also pray unto the Lord, that he would prosper that which they give for ease and remedy to prolong life. He that sinneth before his Maker, let him fall into the hand of the physician.
R7. 5/2/44 [3428]‘s letter to EC:
“I am enclosing a clipping from the N.Y. Herald Tribune, which I believe, may be of some interest to the Ass’n. On my reading, you mention the word, ‘EMOTIONAL’ twice - & stress this factor. In addition to all this, I have written to Dr. Edward Weiss, who is in charge of this Committee or Fund, to manage this research work, & have practically offered myself, to act as a human guinea pig for them. Whatever happens, after I hear from him, I will keep you fully informed.
“Now, as to a report of my own condition, since my reading, on Jan. 3, 1944. Thus far, I have had a total of 5 attacks - as follows: Jan. 14, 1944, Jan. 19, 1944, Feb. 7, 1944, Mar. 19, 1944, Mar. 27, 1944
“It is interesting to note, that the last attack which occurred prior to the reading, occurred on Nov. 8, 1943.
I have bracket the 2 which occurred both in Jan. & also in March - within a period of about a week apart. While this is not UNUSUAL, yet, I would, in a way, consider these 2 attacks as ONE - in both months.
“I realize, perhaps more than ever before, that SERENITY is the solution to my problem of health. I have been taking the Hydrotherapy treatments very regularly. There is much benefit to be derived there-from. Perhaps I should note here that I have not, as yet procured the Calamus Oil, but I hope to get some and add that to the combination of oils, as directed. Also - the first treatment was really the most effective. However - & this is of MOST IMPORTANCE - the one factor which surpasses all else, is the finding, of my own spiritual self. Altho I have ALWAYS tried to live honorably & religiously, I realize, as never before, that I must give myself up to the Lord - to try to do as He commands - & wants all men to live. That is the really hard part. It isn’t easy to change mental habits, & changing our mental attitude requires time. Yet I know that faith can surmount all obstacles.
“Ultimately, I expect to reduce or eliminate the use of sedatives, as directed by my physician. Companionship, I am sure, would help me so much. Yet for some reason, it is withheld from me. Believe me, I try to live, think & act as one who ‘always WANTS, TRIES, & DOES to help, improve other peoples predicaments’ - regardless how small they be. I try always to be cheerful - helpful - encouraging, etc.
“I know that I have been blessed with an unusual amount of perseverance, and therefore, I will continue in my efforts to regain my health.
“I believe, it would be a sensible idea to inform the Layman’s League for Epilepsy, in Boston, Mass., regarding this research work - in conjunction with the emotions. I expect to write to Dr. Lennox [William Lennox, M.D.] about same. Very sincerely, [3428]”
“P.S. I am in hopes of attending the Annual Conference in June, & would appreciate some data, regarding the living costs, when they are available.”
R8. 5/8/44 Letter from Dr. Edward Weiss to Mr. [3428]:
“Thank you for your informative letter of April 28th. The Research Fund is ear-marked at the present time for diseases other than epilepsy but I will be very happy to keep your generous offer in mind in the event that we move into that field of study.”
Sincerely yours, [signed] Edward Weiss
R9. 5/9/44 [3428]‘s letter to EC:
“Thanks for your very encouraging letter. Regarding the clipping which I sent you pertaining to that $10,000 fund for research work, to investigate the field of psychosomatic medicine, I am enclosing Dr. Edward Weiss’s reply to my letter. He mentions that those funds at present are ‘ear-marked for diseases other than epilepsy.’ I certainly do hope that we do hear more of this - & I feel confident that we shall, because there is no doubt in my mind that THEY WILL FIND SOME CONNECTION BETWEEN the EMOTIONS AND ALMOST ANY OTHER AILMENT. Once they definitely establish that link - in their own ‘scientific fashion’ - as it pertains to heart disease or some other serious ailment, they will persist to other ailments. Let me explain: For example, often times, a patient may feel mentally depressed. Then he may make no progress - rather, he will retrogress. However, let him become cheerful - & IMMEDIATELY his spirit is buoyed up, & he progressed by leaps & bounds - especially, if this be in a religious direction - & he convinces himself that he has nothing to worry about. That God will take care of him, etc.
“As to my own case - I believe that the severity of my attacks may be gradually becoming reduced - even tho the frequency may be (at this writing) increasing. Just note this: From NOV. 8, 1943 (the date of last attack prior to my reading, which took place on Jan 3, 1944) to Jan. 14, 1944, (the date of first attack after the reading) - was a span of about 9 WEEKS. The next attack occurred just 5 days later. Then the next attack, occurred on Feb. 27, 1944, which is a span of about 5 WEEKS. Then about a month later, I had another attack (Mar. 19) & then one week later - another attack. I know DEFINITELY - that serenity, mental relaxation, tranquility will definitely improve this condition. I don’t expect a condition of this sort to vanish
- suddenly or even hurriedly. However, I know, that if conditions were more cheerful, I would progress beyond ALL past records. Of that, I have no doubt in my mind. Marriage would help materially - but what I really need, is COMRADESHIP - not just a casual acquaintanceship or companionship. A home of my own, is what I want.
“I am enclosing 25 cents for a booklet on Epilepsy. They are listed as ‘Physical Case Studies’. In tonight’s paper, I noticed a large article on baths, hydrotherapy, etc. You will be interested in same, for the money for such investigation comes from the Baruch fund - recently announced. Also I have an article, compiled by myself & […] on ‘Mental Abuse of Life’. When I can get this typed, I’ll send you a copy. I haven’t heard from Hugh Lynn in months, altho I pray for you both, nightly.
“I expect to write to Dr. Lennox, % Harvard Medical School, along these same ideas. He was one of the men, I believe, who helped discover the drug, Dilantin, which is used in cases like mine. I will write to the places you mentioned, regarding rates, etc. I only hope I can get the time off to go to the Congress.
“With all good wishes, I remain, Sincerely yours, [3428].”
R10. 7/25/44 [3428]‘s letter to EC:
“Thank you for giving me the appointment of Oct. 13 for a check reading. While I am not overly superstitious, that number 13, never did prove very lucky for me. Be that, as it is.
“Here is a report of the attacks (for the LAST half of 1943) a period of 6 months PRIOR to my reading - which was JAN. 3, 1944:
6/11/43 8/22/43 7/17/43 8/31/43 (This is for a period of time covering 7/25/43 9/6/43 6 months prior to my reading.) 7/30/43 10/1/43 8/12/43 11/8/43
“Since the reading, here is a report of the attacks. 1/14/44 3/27/44 7/4/44 1/19/44 5/21/44 2/7/44 5/29/44 3/19/44 6/25/44
“After I received the copy of my reading, perhaps 2-4 weeks elapsed before I was able to get any appointment with a physio-therapist, who gave me my first. This man’s name is […] & it is important to explain that after his treatment I felt all relaxed. Then he couldn’t take care of me - & neither could another man (at the City Hospital) so in a short time, I went up to the Y.M.C.A. & practically all of my treatments have been given to me by a man, named John […]. There is a vast difference in the effect of this man’s work - as compared to that of Mr. […] - but in the past month, there is a very marked improvement. We (together) re-read the reading, & I explained to him that what I wanted, was RELAXATION, rather than STIMULATION.
“So far, for the physical part - altho I have been taking 2 1/4 gr. phenobarbital, plus 2 capsules of Dilantin each day - both before the reading - and at present.
“Now, something new has happened - & the peculiar part is - that it WORKS. I have tried it for ONLY about 10 days, so as yet, it is far too premature to make any definite statement, but I feel most confident, that it will accomplish what I want it to do. All this same information was given to me, by my physician many years ago, & I even found an old letter which he wrote me, back in 1926 or ‘28, in which he explains this ‘restlessness’ - or excitability. You referred to it, as ‘emotion’, & somehow, I seemed to grasp the full impact or importance of this factor, more from the word ‘emotion’. Here is what happened. At times, my thoughts would dwell upon various matters, such as finances, or sex - or having a home of my own or anything. I made a list of all the various medications used - also treatments, etc. during all these many years that I have been sick, & I found that the one thing which produced the MOST EFFECTIVE results, was a girl’s comradeship. Strange as it may all seem, I never could understand why - until only very recently. You know, how sometimes, your mind will be groping with a problem - for days - or even weeks or months - & suddenly, out of a clear sky, the solution comes right to you. I realized (so I believe) why such comradeship proved so beneficial, & that was, because I never permitted the thought of lust or sex to even enter my mind - that is, in connection with […] during all the time that I knew her. I forced any immoral ideas out of my mind, & even tho I may have had other worries or problems on my mind during those years - I had gained or acquired my natural repose - or serenity or self-control, THAT is the VERY ESSENCE of the ENTIRE PROBLEM. Also - by exercising MENTAL SELF-CONTROL over my thoughts, I eliminated much of this excitability. I decided that I would not get all excited in any discussion, say, at the Synagogue - or in talking with friends about politics, or the world war, or on any subject. I would try to retain my self-control & not let my emotions dominate over me. Also I would come home evenings - want to read or listen to the radio, & pretty soon, I would find my thoughts dwelling on some petty matter - & instead of helping myself to regain my health, I was ‘standing still’. So - I said to myself - ‘you are going to sleep. Forget all that junk.’ And so - thru self- control, I awoke each A.M. feeling TOTALLY RESTED. I am so much more cheerful & self satisfied & in general, feel so much more optimistic than heretofore. I want to add here - that just lately, a friend loaned me a small pamphlet, called ‘The Secret of Recovery’, written by Christian D. Larson. Some day I suggest that you read it. I’ll try to get you a copy. And in addition to all this - I feel a strong religious improvement. I notice (especially of late) how my prayers seem to be answered so readily, (by God). Besides all that - there is within myself, that spiritual satisfaction, or awakening, when some person really begins to ‘find’ his own TRUE self.
“Now, I am beginning to understand, how, by permitting my emotions to CONTROL ME, I not only am suffering from ill health, but don’t permit myself to really enjoy those things which God gives to me, or - I should say - really live. All this requires will-power, but I have plenty of that. Instead of relaxing - & re-newing my energy, I was merely wasting it on some petty ideas. Then - in any conversation or whenever I read bad news - of the war or in any direction, I merely take hold of myself - & won’t permit my mind to dwell on such ideas. Thus - I get my rest - there seems to be a temporary coordination if my impulses, body nerve & blood supply, etc.
“I am still taking my regular hydrotherapy treatment each week. On the oils used for massage - I have been unable to procure the Calamus Oil - but recently somebody told me where I might get some. Also you said, Olive Oil, HEATED. Now then - what I did, was to buy 2 oz. Olive Oil - & 2 oz. Tincture of Myrrh, & put all this in one 4 oz. bottle. Perhaps I may be wrong, firstly - in not heating the entire prescription - & secondly, in not having gotten the Calamus Oil. At any rate - these are the only things I can think of. You see - I thought it was O.K. to put the Olive Oil & Tincture of Myrrh together. Perhaps I should have kept them separately.
“Otherwise, I have been following the suggestions to the letter. I study my Bible - regularly, & things pertaining thereto. It seems that the attacks did seem to have become MORE NUMEROUS during the 1st 6 months after the reading. I’m quite sure, that from now on, we should have much improved conditions, & I have high hopes of first eliminating the sedatives - & secondly - becoming all well. I feel very confident of these things.
“Later on, I shall keep you fully informed as to exactly where I shall be on the date of my check reading, & I shall probably send you a few questions, which you may ask. Regards & best wishes for a cheerful, & restful vacation. Sincerely yours, [3428].”
R11. 8/23/44 Letter to [3428] from Mrs. Brooks Potter of American Epilepsy League: “I have read the book and found it very interesting and will communicate with Mr. Cayce any time we have any use for the data from his files which we think could be of some help to the furtherance of the work of this League, Sincerely yours, Mrs. Brooks Potter.”
R12. 8/24/44 [3428]‘s letter to EC:
“Am enclosing a letter from Mrs. Brooks Potter, which is self explanatory. I am writing her now - urging her to write you, in the hope, that possibly some of the physicians who are connected with the American Epilepsy League, may be convinced about your worth, etc.
“I realize that she can’t tell a physician how to treat his patients - or what to prescribe, etc., but I do believe, that HERE IS AN EXCELLENT OPPORTUNITY TO TRY OUT SOME OF THE SUGGESTIONS MADE IN PREVIOUS READINGS - that is - on a BROAD SCALE. Even if this were done as a mere experiment, perhaps SOME of these patients might benefit - & in that way, perhaps, the medical fraternity might ‘condescend’ to cooperate. At any rate, I keep plugging away. Nothing is gained by merely the reading of the book. I am interested in seeing it put to practical use.
“Let us hope, that in due time, she may write you.” Sincerely [3428]
R13. 9/20/44 Letter to [3428] from Tracy Putnam, M.D. of the Neurological Institute, NYC; Professor of Neurology and Neurosurgery, Columbia University: “I have been delayed in replying to your long letter by absence from town.
“Of course I am much interested in all that pertains to epilepsy, and shall try to read Sugrue’s book. I keep in pretty close touch with Mrs. Potter, so that I hope to share in any information she may obtain from you or Mr. Cayce.
“With best wishes, I am,” Yours truly, Tracy J. Putnam
R14. 1/28/45 [3428]‘s letter to Mrs. Cayce:
“I want to extend my sympathy to you, & to all of the members of your family in behalf of the bereavement of your late husband, Edgar Cayce. Even tho I have never even met him personally, yet thru our personal correspondence (that was the only way I knew him) there grew up between us, a friendship, which was most beautiful - & mutually so enriched by his capacity for understanding true human emotions.
“At a time like this, words are so futile, even tho I want to say so much, yet words just won’t come. I feel all choked up - but in my heart, it is written there - I mean my thoughts. Believe me, only someone who has already passed thru a similar episode in life (like myself), can truly understand what you are now passing thru. In this life, we are rather prone to take our parents or loved ones so much for granted, almost as tho they were a piece of furniture in the home. Suddenly they leave us, & you keep asking yourself
- ‘could this possible have happened to me?’ Yet the very walls shriek out of his presence!
“It is a rather significant fact that about a year ago, I wrote him, suggesting that he make a reading, in order to ascertain WHOM the Ass’n should train, in order to carry on the work, if the time ever came when he should pass away. I dug into my files - & the letter which he wrote me DATED DEC. 9, 1943 is so pertinent at this particular time. I suggest that you look thru my file, & read that particular letter. It so happens, that YOU were the conductor at MY reading, & so you, too, have taken a part in helping me to what I firmly believe, will be the re-gaining of my normal health. My reading took place on Jan. 3, 1944.
“About a year ago, I wrote Hugh Lynn. He was in England at the time. I would like to write him now, & convey my sympathy to him. Is he at the same address, or can you give me his present address? I seem to have the idea, that he - Hugh Lynn, will be the one to carry on this work, in his father’s shoes. I may be wrong - but that is my own opinion.
“I must send some clippings to Miss Davis, & an article to Mr. Sugrue. I want you to know, that EACH night - since about Jan 1st, 1944, I prayed for both Mr. Edgar Cayce, & your son, Hugh Lynn. I still pray for Hugh Lynn. I have read Mr. Sugrue’s book, ‘There Is A River’ - also the various articles about Mr. Cayce & his work - & I got a dozen or more friends to read the book. I got the American Epilepsy League & various physicians to investigate & get interested in his work. The Ass’n never informed me as to their findings or what they intended to do, etc.
“Mrs. Cayce - I am enclosing 2 clippings from the N. Y. Herald-Tribune. One pertains to religion - the other to physic phenomena. If CONVENIENT for you, will you please see that Miss Gladys Davis - the Sec., or the proper authority, gets same? I don’t like to enclose these with a letter like this - but this is the quickest way. They should be in my OWN file - & please explain this to Miss Davis.
“Hoping that I hear from you soon, & that Hugh Lynn is well, I remain, Very sincerely yours, [3428]”
R15. 1/28/45 [3438]‘s writing:
MY INDEX FINGER
Someone has truly said, and aptly so, that in most cases, one can count his true friends on the fingers of his two hands, and often times (which is usually the case) on just one hand. Regardless of how many hands you may require, the important fact which I want to emphasize, is that even in such a close analysis of the degree of friendship between you and your so-called TRUE FRIENDS, there is usually one amongst all of them, who stands out beyond all others. Perhaps he may be the one whom you hardly know whether or not he is actually in favor with you or rather you may think that his interest in you may be merely professional or for his own personal benefit or gain, rather than to really protect your own welfare. In my own case, it happens to be my physician, Dr. […]. Besides acting in his professional capacity, he takes a very personal interest in my affairs, and is my greatest advisor. His judgement is so reliable that it most always is correct. Whenever I am about to make some important move, I always get his opinion. He has proved on several occasions that his judgement is more accurate than the combined opinions of all whom I ask.
Therefore, he is deserving of some outstanding mention of his infinitely experienced mind, that acts in so great an advisory capacity towards me. For that reason, I have decided to ‘Nickname him’ - “MY INDEX FINGER”.
If you will take the time to consider that it is always this particular finger which points the direction - as a guide when asking for information; or swings at you in angry command. This same finger is always the one to beckon you to come hither to listen to words of advice. In most cases when gestures are made along with the conversation, it is this same finger which is used to emphasize the necessity of certain lines of action.
Yes, I could continue writing several other ways in which this same finger expresses the thought which I have in mind.
Remember - that he who acts towards you in such a capacity, is almost like unto part of yourself, for even tho he is not an actual organ or part of your body yet his influence moulds your daily activity.

R18. 7/60 Notes on EPILEPSY cases from the Edgar Cayce records made by Walter N. Pahnke, M.D. at A.R.E., Virginia Beach, Virginia:
“The following notes were taken on cases as read and are merely the opinion of the abstractor at the time he read the case plus the correspondence. The main value of these notes is that they give some indication of what the exact diagnosis in each case may or may not be. Case #3428. Given in 1944 [1/3/44]. Male 44 years old. This case was classified as group 2. There was a history given that the attacks began when the patient was 16-17 years old but there was no description of the attacks. Correspondence after the reading indicated that the patient did not follow the treatment completely, also there was a report that the attacks did not change. There was no follow-up after 1945!

B1. 6/16/43 [3428]‘s letter to EC:
“Recently, one of my fellow co-workers at the N.Y. State Highway Dept. told me about your book called, THERE IS A RIVER, written by Mr. Thomas Sugrue. In a very vague and very brief manner, he outlined the nature of the book, and how it might affect me, and also my health. That same evening, I went to our Public Library, found its card in the Index files, but unfortunately, the book was out. The Librarian suggested that I reserve the book, which I did. She took my phone number, and explained that if the book was returned before June 14th, when it was due, she would phone me at the office. A few days later, I received a phone message from the Library, telling me that the book was now in, and that I would have 3 days in which to claim the book. That same Friday eve, I hurried down to the Library, which I must pass on my way to the Synagogue. I always try, habitually, to attend the Fr. & Sat. afternoon & evening services - at least, during the week. I got the book, which I left at a nearby store, while I attended the Services. As I entered the Synagogue, it was with a deep, genuine hope - yes, I should say, a prayer - that God help me to regain my health, & with the same child-like faith in God, that I have always had that He would never fail me, for I can truthfully tell you that He never has, & you can believe me that I have already passed through quite a few serious crises in life, even thus far, & I am still far from being an old man. Yes
- you can believe me when I tell you that I have already learned the true values of some of the things which really count in this life. Many of your ideas and opinions pertaining to religion, God, & the basic principles of life coincided so perfectly with those of my own, that I could understand you thoroughly, and naturally, appreciate & admire you for them.
“When the Services were ended, I got my book, & then hurried home, to read it. I was amazed - yes, even confused, when I first began to read the book. As I delved deeper into the book (& oftentimes I would re-read portions), in order to make sure that I had grasped the full significance of its contents, or what I had read, I decided to skip a few chapters & look through the chapters in the back of the book. It was through sheer accident that I came upon the case of the priest, who was troubled with epilepsy, which, incidentally, is my own aliment - since about the time of the 1st World War. As I read that man’s descriptive data pertaining to his own case - that part where he says that I am like an animal caught in a trap, never knowing when the attacks may occur, etc., I could so very naturally, & so very vividly place myself in his own predicament. How I sympathized with that man! Only a person who has actually lived through such a condition, can truly understand. At that time, I had only read about 200-250 pages of the book, & had skipped over several chapters. When I saw the heading of that particular chapter, marked Epilepsy (I believe it is on page 386) naturally I became interested, & read that one chapter or the story about the priest, before returning to where I had left off reading.”
B2. 12/15/43 [3428]‘s letter to Edgar Cayce:
Should I continue taking the sedatives, that is, Phenobarbital & Dilantin as directed by Dr. Ney? These medicines don’t cure the ailment. They are supposed only to quiet my nerves. Should I INCREASE or DECREASE or ELIMINATE this medication entirely?
What is the CAUSE of my condition? Is it possible to eliminate this condition? Is my condition caused by the damage due to the brain and spinal column, as explained to me by Dr. Lesser Kauffman?
A few years ago, I made an analysis of all the different medications & treatments used in order that I might select the things which were most effective during all these years and then use them over again. Here is the story: During all the years that I have been sick with this ailment, the ONE THING which has produced the MOST EFFECTIVE results, of all the various medications & treatments which any physician has ever prescribed for me, was a girl’s comradeship. Here is how it happened. In 1928, I was located at …, L.I. I usually spent most of my week-ends in Brooklyn or N.Y. City, with some of my aunts & uncles & their families. Through one of my aunts, I was introduced to a very nice girl, named […]. During the 4 - 6 months that I kept company with […] I NEVER had an attack. No doctor prescribed this - but it did PRODUCE RESULTS which no medicine could or ever did. WAS THIS DUE TO THE FACT THAT I WAS IN LOVE WITH HER? Or was this the natural result of my affection for her? Or, was it the psychological effect of her comradeship, which produced such a cheerful or optimistic mental attitude on my part for her. Thus, I began to wonder - if […] could help me to produce such results, merely as a result of a friendship or comradeship, would it not be possible for some other girl friend to help me in the same way?
B3. 12/22/43 [3428]‘s letter to EC:
“I am enclosing both the letter and QUESTIONS which I asked my friend, Mr. […] to send me, and which you are to ask at the time of my Reading, on Jan. 3rd. In my previous letter, I wrote 4 questions, & if any of these questions over-lap, I suggest that you select the ones which seem to be of most importance to you. I don’t want to burden you with a lot of questions. What I am really interested in, is to try to regain my health. I realize your time is limited, but there are some questions among his list, which perhaps may never have been suggested before. I suggest that you read them, and see what you think of his ideas. This man is very well acquainted with my condition. He is an intelligent man, & one who has studied metaphysics during a large portion of his life. It was thru me, that he read the book, THERE IS A RIVER. He also wrote you, etc., and I’m positive, is deeply interested in you, and your work, etc.
“I finally wrote Hugh Lynn, and I hope that he will enjoy my letter. I have a hunch that he may. It will be something to brighten up his life for a little while at least.
“Again let me wish you & your entire family, all a joyous Holiday season with good cheer for the coming year. I wouldn’t worry too much about Hugh Lynn. I feel most confident that he will return when this conflict is ended. I’m positive that God is with him watching over him, and guarding him. I pray for him, for I know that you need him in your work, and he has much unfinished work of his own, ahead of him.
“I expect to be at my mother’s home on the morning of Jan 3rd, in …, N.Y. Should something come up, to change my plans, I shall keep you fully informed. With all good wishes, I remain,” Very sincerely yours, [3428]
B4. GD’s note: Long letters passed between Mr. [3428] and Mr. Cayce. Mr. [3428] wrote of his taking care of his mother and various members of his family, even married sisters and their children, etc. Because of his obligations financially EC agreed to give Mr. [3428] his P-1 without charge, although he signed a membership application and later sent a
1 contribution for something or other, which EC thanked him for as if it has been100.He had been having the attacks since he was about 16-17 years of age. “I was a normal, healthy boy - and am still in fairly good health or physical condition, outside of this one ailment.”
B5. 12/28/43 EC’s letter to [3428]:
“Thank you more than I can say for yours of the 22nd. I trust we may be able to get something that will be worthwhile for you in the appointment for the morning of January 3, 10:30 to 11:30 EWT. Be sure if any changes come about to let us know the exact address. I don’t believe we have the street and house number of your mother’s home. You had better wire us this address please, if you happen to be there, for it would be rather hard to try to locate it just with the address of […].
“I don’t know how to tell you how much I appreciate your writing Hugh Lynn. Am sure he will enjoy your letter, for I am quite sure he can’t help but at least be anxious about how the many requests are being handled at this time.
“I appreciate your telling me too, as to your feelings as to his work. We can’t help but be anxious no matter what may be our feelings. We are still very human, and I have come to depend upon Hugh Lynn in the last few years a great deal more than I had realized until he was here no more.
“We have some lovely helpers, yet there is a difference.
“Thanks a lot for everything.
“Do let us have the address you will be that morning for sure, and be sure and let us have it before the hour of the reading, 10:30 to 11:30 EWT, the morning of the third.”
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce
