Who was this morning bet. 10:30 Time of Reading and 11:30 A.M. EWT, at the 3:45 P. M. Eastern War Time. City Hospital, …, Wisconsin.

1. GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them:

2. EC: Yes. As we find, conditions here are such that to interfere with that which has been planned or laid out for the body would not be in keeping with the best interest of the body.

3. If there is the response to those applications made, there may be information given that will help.

4. But in the present we would not interfere with the present applications.

5. We are through with this reading.

Dear Sir:

I should have written earlier except for a death in my family.

I was grievously disappointed in my attempt to secure help for my husband through you.

I had written you, telling where Mr. [3449] would be on Dec. 8 and listing questions to be asked.

That afternoon when I was out you wired that you “must know” his whereabouts, yet, without hearing from me you apparently held the reading at 3:45 that afternoon [GD’s note: Three other physical readings were given that same afternoon].

This raises a doubt in my mind that you “carefully examined” the body and “told what conditions you found,” answering those questions.

No treatment has helped to date and Mr. [3449] continues to suffer severely.

I hate to think that I have spent $20 for a hoax. Whether you can convince me otherwise remains to be seen. I had so much faith in your powers.

Dear Mrs. […]

I want to beg your pardon for not replying to your letter of January 31st a long time ago.

Correspondence has been so heavy and there are so many letters that I feel need my personal attention. When I try to take care of all of them, someone gets left and it is months before we can get all of them answered.

I do not blame you at all for your feeling as to Mr. [3449]‘s reading that was attempted on the afternoon of December 8th. I believe there is the possibility of us being of help, if it is desirable to you. Now whether this could be done soon enough to be of real help is another question. Know this, Mrs. […], I don’t think this is any sort of a hoax, because we are certainly not trying to do other than be of service to others where possible.

If you would prefer that we return your membership, we will of course do that. What are the conditions of Mr. [3449] at present, and are there any changes? It may be several weeks, however, before you can get an appointment, because I have been ill myself for several weeks and you can readily see how balled up things have become.

Let me hear from you right away. We will send you the money for your membership, or try to help if possible, whichever you desire.

Dear Mr. Cayce:

The doctor says Mr. [3449] is in a “very precarious” condition. Since it seems unlikely that you can be of help to him I will accept your offer to return my membership.

B1. 9/30/43 Wife’s letter:

Mr. Edgar Cayce, Virginia Beach, Va.

Dear Mr. Cayce,

I have mailed the application form to the Association, enclosing P.O. money order for twenty dollars.

My husband, for whom I request the reading, has suffered severe pain constantly for three years - at times so severe as to drain all color from his face. No one, not even the Doctors at Mayo Clinic, has been able to relieve him.

If my application is approved will you kindly give this reading at the earliest possible date?

Such pain is well-nigh unendurable at times.

B2. 10/27/43 Wife’s letter: “Some years ago our doctor told him he would have to take a heart tablet every day for the remainder of his life…has suffered intense pains for three years and for several months his nights have been a matter of dread to him…pain drives him from bed and he sits in an easy chair with the electric pad under him, two or three hours in the middle of the night. Gets a little sleep, but being upright puts additional strain on the heart… The cataracts in his eyes are at the point for the operation, but…could not endure lying motionless after the operation, for it is such agony…works at a hospital to earn the cost of this care, and any slip or stumble in early morning or evening darkness causes unbearable pain… Icy streets will soon be a hazard.”

B3. 12/1/43 Wife’s letter:

What is the condition of Mr. [3449]‘s spine? What is the nature of the injury to the sciatic nerve at the juncture of hip and thigh bones? What treatment and diet are recommended? Can anything be done for three numb toes on his left foot? Are his cataracts ripe for operating?

P.S. Mr. [3449] will be on duty at the hospital where he is employed, on Dec. 8.
