This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 8th day of December, 1943, in accordance with request made by the self - Mr. [3460], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research and Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by the book, THERE IS A RIVER.

Born August 2, 1911, in Hamilton, Missouri. Time of Reading 11:30 to 11:50 A. M. Eastern War Time. New York City.

1. GC: You will give the relations of this entity and the universe, and the universal forces; giving the conditions which are as personalities, latent and exhibited in the present life; also the former appearances in the earth plane, giving time, place and the name, and that in each life which built or retarded the development for the entity; giving the abilities of the present entity, that to which it may attain, and how. You will answer the questions, as I ask them:

2. EC: Yes, we have the records here of that entity now known as or called [3460].

3. In analyzing the records as we find them here, these are indicated when we consider a composite of the material as well as the universal or astrological sojourns.

4. The entity knows just a little bit about everything, and little about anything very well. The entity may be expected to create the most unusual in art or cartoon; yet we find that the cartooning with a purpose, giving the entity’s characters a soul, may be the channel through which the entity may give a lesson - for it appeals to those who are open for suggestion. Thus let thy characters be suggestive of creative influences, not demoralizing or pessimistic, but ever optimistic; with the idea or thought that God is near - to those who seek Him.

5. These records we choose, then, with the desire and purpose that this information may be a helpful experience for the entity; enabling the entity to find in self that needed most - the relationship of self to Creative Forces or God, through its dealings and relationships with its fellow man.

6. We would minimize the faults, we would magnify the virtues.

Don’t overestimate, ever; but others will never think more highly of you or your abilities than ye think of yourself. Know that the success of whatever nature, spiritual, mental or material, must first be found within self. It is with what spirit ye are prompted, urged, or that ye entertain. For it will depend upon the will of the entity, the I Am within self, the spirit ye entertain, as to how well ye cultivate in mind what ye would present as the character of fruit in material things.

7. Thus know thy ideals, spiritually, mentally, materially, and live up to them; not only today, but tomorrow and the next day. Be consistent, be persistent.

8. The entity is inclined to be rather questioning in its relationships to others, which is not the real nature of the entity. This is too much assumed as a character needed for that you would represent. Remember, as indicated in regard to the manner in which ye may find thyself the better, ye must know whom ye believe and what ye believe. But know the author personally, just as that ye would create with thy hand or brush is a part of thy body, in mind and soul. So must thy life and thy purpose be as a part of Him who is the creative Force, and without whom there was not anything made that was made. Thus ye will be on the road to finding self. Astrologically little has been sustained. Ye may make of thyself that ye visualize as thy ideal. For as He has given, “I stand at the door and knock. Open and I will come in, if invited.” And He will stay out if invited to stay out!

9. As to appearances in the earth, while all may not be given, these indicate the varied activities:

10. Before this, in the name John Rand, the entity was closely associated with those [Robert Fulton, etc.?] that made the first experiments of applying steam to wheels to turn in water and upon land.

11. Hence of the scientific mind, the seeking of the unusual, whether it be in music - that is a part of the entity’s experience - or art. For it is music that spans the distance between the sublime and ridiculous. Whether it is in the spiritual realm or purely material realm it is one and the same. For that which is true is ever one, cutting even as the two-edged sword, making for good or bad depending upon its application.

12. But the entity applied self, though never received much acknowledgement of that which it accomplished. Yet there are the abilities latent and manifested in self respecting anything having to do with mechanics, especially in the application of gas, heat or water to mechanical things.

13. Before that the entity was among those in France during the first of the kings that set themselves in power over the various classes.

14. The entity then was jester to the king, capable in those periods of despondency of bringing about good will. When there were those questionings of etiquette and of any activity, the entity set about to make for better relationships.

15. Hence in the present the entity naturally has a smattering of every form of activity, whether pertaining to art, sculpture, music, or social relationships, diplomatic or foreign relationships.

16. The name then was Henri Conde. The entity gained much of that which may be used in the present in a creative or imaginative way, provided the abilities are turned to those things pertaining to creative influences in the experience.

17. Before that the entity was in the Grecian land when there were those activities in which there were the expressions of the love of body, the creating of things pertaining to art and artistic activities, the first of statuary and the Bohemian life. These were a part of the entity’s experience.

18. Hence the semblance of putting on same isn’t at all distasteful, and is a matter not to be worried with but keep the spirit of creative influence, not the seductive or that too which too great a question mark may be put.

19. The entity then was something of the sculptor, something of the artist. And the entity even yet can make pencil drawings lacking in perspective in those early periods.

20. The name then was Latava.

21. Before that the entity was in the Egyptian land during those periods when the Natives were being trained for vocational activities, when there were those drawings made for the edifices being prepared for halls, for tombs, for the varied groups that were active during those transition periods following the period of Ra-Ta - who had changed these activities.

22. The entity was among those who made special attempts to set about certain definite movements, yet being “sat upon”, the entity finds self in the present ofttimes in that position of having great ideas but nobody else will agree with the entity.

23. As to the abilities of the entity, that to which it may attain and how:

24. In cartoons, or cartoon strips, the funny papers and the like, the entity may indeed bring a message of hope - if it first finds the ideal within self.

25. Those things having to do with machinery and music, scientific problems, may be depicted by the entity.

27. (Q) Would my work benefit by my wife’s continued study of languages and music? (A) We haven’t the wife, but any study about the entity that would pertain to same should be beneficial to the entity if it is used in a constructive manner and not a gluttonous manner.

28. (Q) Does the art of prophesy enter into my life work? (A) Not in the present cycle.

29. (Q) Should I pursue psychic development? (A) Pursue rather spiritual development; this is of the psychic nature, yes, but find the spirit first - not spiritualism, but spirituality in thy own life.

30. (Q) What are my worst faults and how can they best be eliminated? (A) Read that just given. The desire oft to appear something you are not.

31. (Q) Would changing my name be of any help to me professionally? (A) If you would use it in the proper way, make it mean something to others. That would be the better. We wouldn’t change the name.

32. (Q) Would appreciate explanation of my relationship in past lives to the following: my wife, […]. (A) In Egypt and in Persia and in the experience just before this. As to the character of relationships, these may be used to the advantage for each. If to the abuse, they would be very hard upon each.

33. (Q) My mother, [3242]. (A) We don’t find [3242] in this experience for this entity.

34. (Q) My sister, […]. (A) In the experience just before this a great help to the entity in finding self, when discouraged from the lack of appreciation of its abilities.

Dear Mr. Cayce:

Away at camp I had no opportunity to keep up with the bulletins which our organization issues. Not till today was I able to scan thru them and notice something which I consider a slightly discordant note. Before I offer my comment though please bear in mind that I consider you, your organization and your bulletins GREAT and of incalculable good.

This comment of mine has to do with voice of the individual or entity known as Michael, Lord of the Way which expressed itself so voluminously thru your body during your recent illness. [294-208 - Quoted in 3/44 A.R.E. Bulletin] My interpretation, Mr. Cayce, is this is strictly SPIRITUALIST stuff, even the thundering voice or I should say ESPECIALLY the thundering voice. And, of course, you were no more than the innocent victim. Ever been to a trumpet medium? The voices of all sorts of entities with all sorts of names (usually important sounding) boom thru their warnings for all to hear - their “wisdom” comes thru like thunder.

I am indeed glad that your body was thus misused for no longer a period than it was. I can’t help but regard the publication of this message as a move which would confuse the average reader, startle the scientific minded and bring no spiritual light at all to either group… Mind you, I don’t say that there was anything evil in this entity which called itself Michael, not at all - just a self righteous, boring, unphilosophical being which more or less snuck in on you while you weren’t lookin - or perhaps while your body & spirit were too weak to resist.

I do think though that your readers ought to have this thing explained to them. I’ll bet that examination of the thing by your own readings will bear along with the interpretation I’ve described. If not, I’ll apologize in spades and dig you a Victory garden with same, that is if my C.O. will release me.

I hope you realize that this criticism is being made for constructive purposes and that it’s ONLY my opinion. I would dislike immensely to see anything happen to you or your group which would in any way tend to lower the standard of either. Till another time.

P.S. Mr. Cayce, I’ve never seen the name Unity or Unity School of Christianity connected with you or mentioned in any of your bulletins and yet your organization and theirs are working toward the same goal and using almost the same ammunition. Unlike your group, Unity doesn’t in any way delve into involved metaphysics or Yoga or Theosophy. It does however present the fruits and findings of all Mystical religions in a competent, progressive and comforting way. It is non-sectarian, and its excellent Bible translations and material in general have qualities which are healing and optimistic… I suggest that it’s publications would make excellent reading for your patients.

Thanks for yours of the 17th.

I appreciate very much your comment. I don’t know, to be sure, and all of us have our opinions I presume, but if indeed the voice that spoke was that of Michael, I am glad to have it, but if it was only someone purporting to be, that’s different. The warnings that have come each time that this has happened, which has possibly been three or four times during my forty-four years of experience with it, are ones to be heeded by all of those to whom it was directed.

So far as our association or connection with Unity is concerned, I have worked with many of the leaders in that group. We interchange literature and a great deal of their literature will be found among the books in our library. Quite often we have had instances where people have been referred to this as a portion of their treatment, just as they have been referred to other groups. Some of the most remarkable readings have been where the information has suggested that the patient use Christian Science, and one of the most wonderful that I recall through the years, after following a certain line of suggestions, the individual was to read Unity entirely. These I suppose are merely incidents.

I have a favor to ask of you & how many who write you haven’t. My mother [3242] has been following your prescription for some time in fact has a check reading coming up in May.

On good authority I learn that all is not so well, that she is enduring a considerable amount of suffering which possibly an earlier check reading might allay. That’s my request. Can it, the reading, be moved up without seriously affecting other patients?

I know however you answer this that your decision will be fair & just. Please give it what consideration you can. Thank you.

Dear Mr. Cayce:

They tell me you made a swell speech. A certain Dr. Kuna said you were terrific and this sentiment was echoed by my mother, wife and another friend of mine all of whom attended. Not flattery - I’m sure you’re immune to that. They also told me that the first part of the program wasn’t so hot and that your name was obviously being exploited but that you seemed to be well aware of that fact as evidenced by a humorous note which you inserted in your speech.

We found your horoscope very interesting.

I have a life reading scheduled for December eighth, 3.30 - 4.30. I will at this time be in the armed forces of Uncle Sam. Will you give that date to Miss [3444], …, New York? She has previously written you and so has Dr. Milan Kuna in her behalf.

In return will you transfer her reading date over to me, whether it’s a year from now or whenever it is. Incidentally, I do not know Miss [3444], only about her - that arthritis keeps her in continual pain. Please inform her as soon as possible if you’re willing to make this interchange of dates, and drop me a card or anything telling me what you’ve done.
