This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 31st day of December, 1943, in accordance with request made by the self - [3526], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research and Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by the book, THERE IS A RIVER.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. Harmon Bro.]
Time of Reading 11:00 to 11:20 A. M. Eastern War Time. …, Canada.
-
GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: Kind of snowy!
-
Yes, we have the body here, [3526].
-
As we find, there are disturbing conditions. While the general conditions will be materially aided by the replenishing of resistance, or by the building up of the energies and the vitality of the body, we find that the more specific disturbance has to do with conditions in the sensory organism.
-
The basic reactions in these are somewhat of the karmic nature. These can be materially aided by meeting conditions in relationships to others in such measures as to be as the sacrifice or as the recompense in such disturbances.
-
Then, do not close the ears, the mind or the heart again to those who plead for aid, or to those whom by work or deed ye may aid in their comprehension of their relationships to Creative Forces. For in the measures as ye mete to others, in worshipfulness or in hate, in consideration or in disregard, ye are meeting thy material activities in relationship to Creative Forces - or God.
-
The pathological conditions have been brought about, as we find, from a catarrhal disturbance through head, in the antrum and in the areas about the ear where such disturbing congestions have been produced as to cause prolapsus of the Eustachian tubes. These have gradually drained the oils or fluids, as it were, in the inner ear; thus causing a gradual atrophy of portions of the inner ear. And there has been brought about this inability of discerning sound.
-
These conditions may be materially aided by the resuscitating or building up of the general health of the body.
-
Finger surgery (osteopathically) at the age, while it would be helpful, would not restore more than ten to fifteen percent of the hearing, but would be worth the trial; that is, in the physical conditions.
-
But if there is added the spiritual attitude and aptitude, and application, there may be restored much more.
-
Then, these we would use:
-
We would first begin with a series of attempts to gain the mental and spiritual insight into self’s relationship to Creative Forces.
-
And during such periods we would apply the thorough, general osteopathic treatments. These should be given in series of general relaxing treatments, and if there is the opportunity a little later do give the finger surgery - by the osteopathic ear specialist, you see; breaking up the lesions especially on the left side, and we will find that there will be the more response though the hearing.
-
If there is the need for hearing aid, use the Mono-Tone (?). This will be better for the body’s usage, as we find.
-
Throughout these periods the body should apply for itself the violet ray (hand machine, bulb applicator) in the areas of the head and neck, side of head and around ears; about a minute each evening.
-
Also we would use the Radio-Active Appliance for creating the better balance by the low radiation of vibrations within the body. The attachments would be to the right wrist and left ankle, left wrist and right ankle; using the same plate each time to the wrist and the same to the ankle - only circulating the attachments in this manner. Keep the plates very clean, polishing them when removing from the wrist and ankle, and cleaning them again before making attachments to the body. Let the Appliance be in ice for at least twenty minutes before attaching to the body. Use this Appliance daily when ready to retire, for one hour.
-
As a tonic and body-builder we would use KalDak, as the source of vitamins and minerals for the body. For this body take a level teaspoonful twice each day, dissolved very thoroughly first in a little warm water and then the small tumbler filled with milk.
-
Do these for the body and we should build it up and bring better conditions.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Will these treatments reduce the terrific head-noises? (A) Very decidedly, and the use of the properties to aid in digestion and in mineralizing the body will also help.
-
(Q) Is my work too great a strain? (A) As long as the body feels that it is becoming too great a strain, it is nerve-racking to the body. If the conditions permit, a rest period of at least six to twelve months would be well - when the body might return to the administering of teaching to others.
-
(Q) Would it be well for my health to move to the country as I have been considering? (A) For a period of six to twelve months, yes - then the body would desire to return to greater active work.
-
We are through with this Reading.

Reports
Reports & Follow-up
R1. 1/8/44 [3526]‘s letter to Edgar Cayce:
“I received your letter enclosing the reading which was given by you on December the thirty first from eleven to eleven twenty A.M. I am very pleased to tell you that I kept that time, in fact, from ten-thirty to eleven thirty a period of prayer and meditation. I was first told the above date, but the last letter when my fees ($20) was sent by my niece in New York City, the time given was next July the twenty-fifth. However, I thought that there might be a mistake, and I decided to keep that hour by myself in a quiet time. You can correct the Reading for July on your records.
“I wish to thank you, your wife, Miss Davis and there is another name Harmon Bro. The first three I know quite well from your book. I am very grateful to you all.
“The Ear condition is exactly as many doctors have diagnosed, and the general condition of my body, also I have begun the osteopathic treatments this morning, and I have the violet-ray hand machine to apply each evening. I have inquired for the KalDak tonic, and have not been successful, but I shall try again. Also, the Radio-Active Appliance, I shall write about to Norfolk, Virginia, if I cannot get one in Toronto. The regulations are strict, but I shall do my very best to carry out the treatments. Not only, the physical, but I shall try to develop a better spiritual, and mental attitude. I shall let you know from time to time how I am progressing.
“I have a friend living near New York City to whom I wrote and asked her if she had read ‘There Is A River.’ I had a reply this week, and she said yes, and that her son married a girl from Virginia Beach, who had a friend cured of some ailment for which he could not find relief, by your reading.
“We are having a very nice winter up in Canada. It was quite cold today, but the sun was shining brightly.
“I wish to state in closing that I have every faith in the Psychic Reading, and know I am going to be helped.
“God Bless your work,” Sincerely yours, [3526]
R2. 3/12/44 [3526]‘s letter to Edgar Cayce:
“I received your Physical Reading of December the thirty-first. Since then I have been trying hard to carry out the treatment prescribed. I began the osteopathic relaxing treatment immediately, and sent for other things. I have taken the Kal-Dak product regularly since it reached me the last of January. The Radio-Active Appliance arrived three weeks ago. The only apparatus that I could not obtain was the Violet Ray Hand Bulb. They are not manufactured in Canada now on account of War Restrictions, but I am still hoping to get a second hand one. In the meantime I am using a vibrator, I have had for sometime. Instead of a glass bulb it has a soft rubber one.
“I think that I am improving slowly. My digestion seems better, and the head noises at times nearly disappear, but return in full force when I am tired. At times I think my hearing is improved too. I am hoping that by six months I shall be able to say that I am a great deal better.
“I have received Bulletins from the Association that have helped me greatly, especially the one of February, 1944. I try to live a more spiritual life, but even when I try to do the right, if often turns out to be the wrong. It is a slow growth too, for me at least.
“I was pleased to know that you had a holiday in Florida, and hope that you are greatly benefited.
“I am enclosing an application for a Life Reading, and shall get the ten dollars across the border before it is due to be. I should like to have it, as the Physical Reading said that my condition was karmic. I am well acquainted with the meaning of reincarnation, and have read a great deal about it. I thought that I might be able to do better in this life, if I understood something of what I missed or did wrongly in previous lives. I know that it will be many months before I receive the Life Reading, but I do not mind waiting.
“God Bless you, and the work of the Association. I remain,” Yours sincerely, [3526]
R3. 4/19/44 [3526]‘s Physical Case History:
“I have a partial deafness, which has become greater during the last fifteen years. Also, I have not been robust for sometime.
“On December 31st, 1943, I was given a Physical Reading by Mr. Cayce. The diagnosis was exactly the same as doctors had given. The treatment was osteopathy for relaxation, the Radio-Active Appliance daily, violet-ray hand machine for around ears, and to take Kal-Dak as a vitamin addition. Also, later, to have osteopathic surgery on the Eustachian tubes.
“I began the osteopathic treatments immediately. But as I live in Canada, the Kal-Dak, and the Radio-Active Appliance took longer in securing. I have taken the Kal-Dak from the middle of January, and fifty-five Radio-Active treatments.
I was sleeping better, feeling better, and the head noises were less. Unfortunately the weather up here, during March and April was very disagreeable. I took a very bad cold
- chest and sinuses. I am not back yet to where I was previously. However, I am beginning to feel better again, and the osteopath is beginning the surgery on the Eustachian tubes.
“One suggestion was that if possible to stop work for six to twelve months. This I was unable to do, as I am a teacher, and teachers are scarce in war time. I anticipate faster improvement when I can rest in the summer.”
R4. 6/26/44 [3526]‘s letter to Edgar Cayce:
“I received the June Bulletin [Your Psychic Powers], and as I had a similar experience when my Physical Reading was taking place, I wish to record it.
“My time was from 10:30 to 11:30 on Dec. 31, 1943, and even then I was not sure that I should have it that day, as there was some confusion over my name. However, I kept that time in prayerful meditation, resting on my bed. Between 11:20 and 11:30 I had the distinct impression that the Reading was finished and that I could get up. I did make myself stay still till about 11:30. On your report the time was 11:00 to 11:20.
“I am a school teacher and my holidays begin June the 29th. After resting I shall write a Physical Report. I am still keeping on the treatment prescribed, and I am sure that improvement will come faster when my work is not so heavy.
“I have two months holidays, and I should like to drive down to Virginia Beach, and help with any work that I could do. I have taken part of a University Course, but did not continue to get my B.A. This year with the Gas Rationing, it is impossible, but if any summer your Society thinks that I could be of any use, I freely offer my services. I am vastly interested in the work that you are doing.”
R5. 7/3/44 Edgar Cayce’s letter to [3526]:
“Thanks very, very much for yours of the 26th.
“We are very glad to have the report of your experience at the time of your reading. It always is interesting to us to get the various types of experiences that individuals have. Of course, not everyone has an experience or the awareness that the information is being given. Though some, I think, try so hard that they prevent themselves from having any. Others have definite experiences.
“I do hope that you follow through with the suggestions given you and that you get the results that you desire. We are more than pleased with the results which so many tell us they get and we give thanks to Him for this, for we realize that of ourselves we can do nothing. It is only as the spirit of truth may work through that that may be given to others and as to how sincerely they apply it as to the results they obtain.
“It would be very nice to have you come to the Beach, when circumstances will permit. We would be glad to have you here with us.
“Thank you very much and do let us hear from you from time to time.
“With every good wish, I am,” Sincerely, Edgar Cayce
R6. 7/19/44 [3526]‘s letter to Edgar Cayce:
“I wish to report on Chapter 21 of the book - ‘There Is A River.’ That chapter concerns Andrew Jackson Davis. I had read about him previously in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s ‘History of Spiritualism.’ I remembered the picture of him in that book, being of an old man with piercing eyes. In Mr. Sugrue’s book, it leaves the impression that after he was twenty-one, there was no record of his life. Likely the Association’s Study Group has found out further accounts of Davis’s life by now, but I thought I should report what I knew.
“I went to the Library yesterday and secured the book. This is what is said of Davis’s life - He was born in 1826. His autobiography extends to 1857. At the close of that paragraph is added, ‘he seems to have carried on the same life of alternate writing and lecturing, winning more and more the ear of the world, until he died in 1910, at the age of eighty-four. The last years of his life he spent as keeper of some small bookstore in Boston.’ Conan Doyle has written an excellent chapter on his life.
“On the chance that your Association has not found out anything further about him, I am forwarding this information.”
R7. 7/19/44 Edgar Cayce’s letter to [3526]:
“I have yours of the 17th, and thank you very much for your interest and information regarding Andrew Jackson Davis.
“Yes, we have had data from quite a number of sources since the publishing of the book, concerning Mr. Davis, or Dr. Davis, as he was before his death in 1910.
“We appreciate, though, very much, your taking the interest and time to write us. We have had sent us, from many sources, printed books, tracts, and many other bits of information regarding Dr. Davis.
“Thanking you very much, and hoping that your information is proving - will prove - most satisfactory, and with every good wish.”
R8. 11/5/44 [3526]‘s report on Physical Condition:
“I had a Physical Reading December the thirty-first, 1943.
“I have taken the Osteopathic Treatment, the Radio-Active Appliance, and KalDak, but have not been able to secure the Violet Ray Hand Bulb.
“Results - my general health - digestive system and nerves is improved, and my work does not play me out so much.
“My hearing is not improved, and the head noise have decreased at times, and then returned as loud and noisy as ever. The two main reasons are - not being able to have the violet-ray treatment and colds which lead to sinus infection.
“However, I am continuing the treatment, and I am sure there will continue to be improvement.
“I have also tried to develop a better spiritual attitude. Your Monthly Bulletins help, also Unity Publications, and other reading matter.
“Enclosed find a draft for $22. The twenty dollars for the Life Reading; if the Life Reading is not given the money can be given to any of the Association’s Funds. The two dollars was for some of the Publications I should like to read - A Search For God, Jesus’ Life When on Earth, or just the Two Dollars worth which would include the cost and the postage.
“I have received great help for my daily life since I have joined this Association, for which I wish to thank you.
“I intended to write before this, but my work takes a great deal of time and strength.
“I hope that Mr. Cayce is feeling stronger and not working too hard.”
R9. 12/15/58 [3526]‘s letter to A.R.E.:
“Enclosed find cheque covering my 1959 fees. I am pleased to be a member of the A.R.E., and I have received great help from the other members and the literature.
“A Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year for all my friends down there.
“We have real cold winter weather here, how is it in Virginia?”
R10. 9/17/62 GD’s note: To this date [3526] has continued to be a Sponsoring Member and actively interested in A.R.E. work.
R11. 1/9/70 [3526]‘s letter to Hugh Lynn Cayce:
“In the ‘Reading’ I had asking about my ears, it said that I would never hear perfectly, but in my latter years I’d hear better. Well, last March I had a new operation (not so very new) and had a vibrator put in my left ear. I can hear without my hearing aid now, and I do not wear it around the house. Of course when I wish to hear better I use the aid, and with the two I can hear pretty well. I am quite pleased about it, and I thought you should hear about the accuracy of the ‘Reading.’
“I try to get down every summer but the family affairs intervene. Perhaps I’ll make it in 1970.
“Greetings to all, and good luck about the Library.”
Sincerely, [3526]

B1. 8/4/43 [3526]‘s letter to Edgar Cayce:
“I am enclosing this review that appeared in a Toronto paper of the book, ‘There Is A River.’ I went down to the Oxford Press and purchased it. I have read most of it, and am writing to tell you how much I have enjoyed reading it.
“I have been introduced to the subject of clairvoyance by an older lady about twenty years ago. She was a minister’s daughter, University trained, and tried to teach the way of living to groups of women. With this sympathetic beginning, I have read what I could about clairvoyance. Even to read the book and to be told again, as she tried to tell us - to be gentle, loving, helpful, forgiving, with patience possess our souls, etc., is to make the book worthwhile, but I was wondering if I could have a Reading.
“I am fifty-one years old, and a teacher in this city. Deafness is inherited in our family - bone-hardening. A number of our family are afflicted with it; it comes on at various ages from twenty upward. For the last fifteen years my hearing has become less. I have tried lip-reading, and now wear an Audiphone Bone Conductor, with which I manage to continue teaching.
“There are two questions that I should like to be answered. First, if anything could be done about this deafness. Secondly, if it would be advisable to stop the teaching. I was thinking of taking my pension which would be small, and return to the country where I spent the first twenty-five years of my life. I have made an offer on a house in a village near Lake Simcoe, in that district.
“If I could have a Reading, it does not need to be soon, months from now will do, for I know that you must be booked ahead.
“I have a niece working in New York City, and I could manage through her to send the money in payment, as there are war restrictions now. However when traveling is normal again I should like to travel to Virginia Beach.
“I remain,” Yours sincerely, [3526])
B2. 9/26/43 Questions:
- What causes my deafness?
- What will cure it or improve the hearing?
- What will reduce the terrific head-noises?
- What type and make of instrument would be most helpful, if one is needed?
- Is general ill health caused by the strain of listening or is my work too great a strain?
- Would it be well for my health to move to the country as I have been considering?
