GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes, we have the body, [3563].
-
As we find, there are disturbing conditions which prevent normal reactions in the physical forces of the body. From impairments in segments in the cerebrospinal system the supplies of activity have been cut off through the glandular system as related to locomotion. Thus there has become such characterizations in the eliminations that the muscular and sinew forces in locomotion have become crystallized and hardened; causing an arthritic reaction of the inflammatory nature in the beginning, and then a tendency - in the present - towards atrophy. These cause a great deal of excruciating pain if there is the attempt of locomotion through the body.
-
We find that these conditions may be materially aided. As to how far the corrections may go will depend upon the consistency and persistence of the body as it makes administrations for correcting the disturbance.
-
Thus the beginning must be in the mental attitude of the body-mind. There must be kept a creative, constructive attitude, and not the condemning or faultfinding of others - which has been a portion of the karmic forces being met in self.
-
In the administrations we would begin with these:
-
Use Epsom Salts Packs over the various areas affected, one at a time - one receiving the application one day, another the next day, and so on; the hips, the knees, the feet, the arms and the hands, so that all portions of the afflicted areas receive the administration - including those segments which in the beginning caused the disturbance. Each day these segments should receive the applications, and also oil massages - from the last lumbar to the 9th dorsal. Apply here the saturated solution of Epsom Salts, and afterwards massage with this combination of oils, combining these in the order named:
Olive Oil, as the base…2 1/2 ounces, Peanut Oil…1 ounce, Oil of Pine Needles…1 3/4 ounces, Lanolin (liquefied)…1/2 ounces, Sassafras Root…1/4 ounces, Oil of Mustard…5 drops.
-
These should be thoroughly mixed, and even then they will tend to separate. Each time when ready to use, shake thoroughly and pour a small quantity in an open saucer. Do not pour back into the bottle any that may not be used, or in which the hands have been put. Massage those areas over which the Epsom Salts Packs have been applied.
-
The Packs should be hot, not so as to burn the body but as warm as the body can well stand and let these remain on for thirty-seven minutes. Immediately after removing the Packs, wipe off the areas and massage the oil in.
-
Also begin to use daily the Wet Cell Appliance for thirty minutes carrying alternately Chloride of Gold and Atomidine, the Gold one day, the Atomidine the next day.
-
When using the Gold, in the proportions of one grain Chloride of Gold Sodium to each ounce of distilled water (and use three ounces), attach the copper plate to the 9th dorsal center - or between the 8th and 9th dorsal center.
-
The next day, when using the Atomidine, in the proportions of one ounce commercial strength Atomidine in two ounces of distilled water, the copper plate would be attached at the 4th lumbar center.
-
Each day the large nickel plate would be attached to the lacteal and umbilical duct center, or on this body the width of four fingers from the navel center to the right and three fingers up from that point.
-
The diet each day should include some raw vegetables, or one meal each day should consist chiefly of such as celery, lettuce, carrots, onions, mustard greens, and all of those that may be eaten, plenty of water cress especially. These may be prepared often with gelatin.
-
Do drink plenty of water - six to eight glasses each day.
-
If we will do these, being consistent and persistent, we will have help for this body.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) What will stop sleepless nights? (A) These massages and the rest will stop sleepless nights.
-
(Q) What will reduce occasional severe pain in rectum? (A) The correction in the 4th lumbar area will correct this.
-
(Q) What causes the feeling as if a motor ran in my stomach? (A) The applications of the Gold and Atomidine, through the Appliance, will correct these disturbances.
-
(Q) Any further advice? (A) Do these things as indicated, during these periods making corrections osteopathically of the coccyx end of the spine and in the last of the dorsal centers.
-
We are through with this reading.

Dear Mr. Cayce:
On January 15, 1944 you gave a physical reading for me while I was at the … Hotel, …, Iowa. (I was going to a poultry school teaching the sexing of day-old chicks, a six weeks course, and left …, Iowa for …, Mo. on the 19th of February.)
In the reading you gave me, osteopathy was indicated so I went to a Dr. A. E. Reynolds who had helped me with a severe cold during the week of January 10th. I gave him the carbon copy of your reading but he would not give me any treatments for he insisted I did not have any trouble in my limbs. He seems to be quite successful there in …, Iowa and I was greatly disappointed to see him take the reading so lightly. It was necessary for me to walk to school from the Hotel and many days were snowy and cold - and most unpleasant, but I had no difficulty in walking these 13 blocks both ways. Dr. Reynolds insisted I did not have arthritic reactions in my limbs or any part of my body. Since returning to …, Missouri, I have consulted two X-Ray physicians and pictures have been taken but both said there was no arthritis indicated, at least no bones seemed affected. Dr. Virden in Professional Bldg. and Dr. Vaughn in the Chambers Bldg. were the physicians.
My address is now …, Mo.

Dear Miss [3563]
Have yours of the 1st [Apr. 30th?], and note what you say about the attitude of the Osteopath, and the finding of the others in … They may all be quite right, but will have to say, if true, it is among the first, if not the first, in all the thousands we have given that is wrong, but to err is human and know am very human. But do, if you wish to be better of the trouble, try and have the applications made as suggested in the reading, and then if you are not better will check up and see what has been the trouble.
Thank you very much for your report and hope to hear from you again.
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce

Dear Mr. Cayce:
Since writing you the 1st of May, I have moved - current address is …, Missouri.
I seem to be very well and working for the government again. Was accepted as a blood donor at the Red cross Blood Bank here in … on the 29th of June. I have never tried any of the applications as suggested in the Reading you gave me on January 15, 1944. I have no time now as I work 48 hours a week and so no time to pamper myself. Sleep very well - work seemed to be the answer. Of one thing I am very certain - I have never had arthritis nor any DIFFICULTY in WALKING.
Sincerely, [3563]

R4. 8/5/44 Miss Layton’s letter to [3563]:
Dear [3563]:-
Your letter came in the mail this A.M. I have read it most carefully, and have given prayerful attention to this your problem.
I pray THEY will see and realize your true worth to them, and will take into consideration your true sweet self, and want to help you rather than to hold that superior set up they seem to hold over you. But if they continue I believe I would find me another place. I am keeping you in mind daily and will see you on my return, about Aug. 19th.
I was so glad to hear from you, for it seems so long since I had seen you. Keep me informed.
Yours in Truth [signed] Mrs. Emily Layton [Silent Unity]

Dear Mr. Cayce:
Not long ago I rec’d a bulletin from the Ass’n which is the very first I have ever rec’d. Just how does one become an Active Member? and more closely associated with your work. I bought and read “There is a River” a year ago. I was not informed of the meetings of the Thirteenth Annual Congress.
I wrote you on the 16th of July concerning my health but have rec’d no reply from you. If I remember correctly I have an appointment for Sept. 20, 1944 for a Life Reading.
Sincerely,

Miss [3563] …, Mo.
Dear Miss [3563]
In your letter of Sept. 25th, 1943, you advised us that your address would not be a permanent one. Since then we have listed, as advised by you from time to time, six different addresses. You have been constantly on our list for the Bulletin, but each time it has been returned to us. For this reason, only one Bulletin has caught up to you. Possibly you could let us have a more permanent address to which we can send you the Bulletin or other mail that you might receive from us which goes second class.
If you will refer to page 17 of the booklet, “Life and Work of Edgar Cayce,” you will find the qualifications for Active Membership, and dues.
In your letter of July 16th, you wrote us concerning your physical condition and reading as follows:- “I seem to be very well and working for the government again. Of one thing I am very certain - I have never had Arthritis nor any difficulty in walking.”
In your letter of August 11th, you state that you wrote us on the 16th of July concerning you health but received no reply. The July 16th letter had a definite note of finality, and for this reason a reply did not seem in order.
I would like to call your attention at this time a logical and “time proven” fact concerning the readings. They are not miracles in themselves, but only become so when they are applied in the physical, mental and spiritual life of the individual. This was stressed very clearly and emphatically on pages 383, 384 and 385 of the book, “There is a River,” which you have read.
Since this attitude and approach has not been indicated in regard to your physical reading, we feel that a life reading could be of little, if any, value to you, thereby resulting in a waste of your money and my time.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the reports that your letters contain. Such information is very important to our research work.
I remain,
Sincerely, [signed] Edgar Cayce EC:mv

Mr. Edgar Cayce Ass’n for Research & Enlightenment Virginia Beach, Virginia
Dear Mr. Cayce:
In September 1943 when I made application for a Reading I definitely WANTED and ASKED for a LIFE Reading. In your reply on Oct. 5, 1943 you stated you had made an appointment for a PHYSICAL READING for me on Jan. 15, 1944, Life Reading
- Sept. 21, 1944 and a mental & spiritual reading - Sept. 22,
- I accepted the appointment for a physical reading much against my better judgement as I was recovering from the shock of my mother’s death and two physicians had definitely said there was nothing organically wrong with me. All I needed was rest and sleep. Any pains I might have were nervous reactions. I did have some osteopathic adjustments for better sleep along in the fall of 1943. When I came home to … in Jan. 1943 I weighed 114 pounds. I now weigh 136 (to my consternation 125 pounds would please my vanity much more). I knew when I accepted the physical appointment that if the remedies suggested were complicated that I would not follow them. My mother was interested in Christian Science and Unity and Mental Healing. While I never adhered to them or her wishes regarding them very implicitly, if I were bothered with something a physician did not help I went to a Unity Healer or a Christian Science practitioner and was usually relieved. For those very reasons I did not at first ask for a PHYSICAL READING because I believe that one’s mind does affect one’s body and I had no faith in material remedies other than perhaps aspirin or some simple application for burns. I do take vitamins - Vitamins A & B especially. Unity School of Christianity teaches reincarnation. Even Mary Baker Eddy referred some where in Science & Health to life before this present state of existence. I can not quote her words, but her words are something to the effect that “if we live after this body is DISCARDED certainly we must have LIVED BEFORE HAVING THIS BODY.” Of course I have always been interested in the possibilities of having lived before this present life and just what it was my mission or purpose to accomplish and where and how could I find out. And that was why I wrote you asking for a Life Reading. I never wanted the physical Reading but willingly accepted it when you wrote you had made it for Jan. 15, 1944 which was months before the Life Reading could be had. I do not have the physical reading before me but as I remember it seemed very complicated. I have found it necessary to move frequently and live among strangers which did not help as far as acquiring the electrical appliance recommended in the reading. It would have been difficult to move about as well as expensive and I honestly did not believe in it so why spend any more money on it.
My letter of the 15th or 16th of July was in answer to your letter of the 4th of May. My letter was written in haste because you had written on the 4th of May for me “to try the applications as suggested in the reading and then if you are not better will check up and see what has been the trouble.” I did not write you again until the 16th of July, but there never was a day went by I did not think & hope for the Life reading. Certainly a physical reading couldn’t hurt me and it might help so it would be cheap even at $20. The day Jan. 15, 1944 I had been sick for a week and unable to attend classes in …, Iowa so was confined to my room in the … Hotel. I was taken ill with a severe head cold on the 9th of January which was Sunday and was down to the dining room in the evenings during the week of January 10th. On Saturday morning of the 15th I read my Bible and hoped I would receive a good reading. Once I was disturbed by the maid who came in to clean my room. That I could not help and was very disturbed about the interruption. The osteopath who attended me during this time is the one who later refused to give me the adjustments as suggested in the physical reading. I resented his refusal to give me the adjustments. I did not have the money, the time or a proper place to set up the wet cell appliance. If there is any one in … with whom you could write with complete frankness - why not have them meet me and talk to me and have them report to you their opinion of my state of health and whether they believe the physical reading fits me in any instance. I SHOULD NOT HAVE HAD the physical reading. In the first place it was a year TOO LATE. I was ill in Jan. 1943 - by Jan. 1944 I was attending classes in …, Iowa and weighed 130 pounds - a gain of 16 pounds. I was trying to find other work other channels of expression. Just as now I want the Life reading because I want to know who I have been in past lives and what special talents I have now to use and where and how I have to use them. If I could have had this Life reading in Sept. 1943 it might have saved me money and disappointment. The work I learned in …, Iowa was too heavy for me, my hands are small, and it would have been in surroundings distasteful to me - but I tried. Later I went back to Government work which is more to my liking, among people who are usually refined & cultured as well as thoughtful & considerate.
It is quite alright with me for you to CANCEL the MENTAL & SPIRITUAL READING FOR SEPT. 22, 1944. But the Life reading, I would like very much to keep that appointment. I really cannot afford the two $20 expenditures at this time. Perhaps later, but not now.
The Inner Sanctuary of Prayer in Santa Monica, California as well as Mrs. Emily Layton of Unity - Silent Unity usually take care of any spiritual help I may seem to need.
I moved recently because Mrs. Layton thought it best for my welfare to do so. I do not move or change residence without good reason or due consideration. Where I had a room was in the Country Club district of … with very nice people. I had a lovely room with private bath and because of the lack of domestic help I washed the dinner dishes and kept the baby evenings, for my board & room. They seemed to resent my every mouthful of food. You can see from Mrs. Layton’s letter (written while on her vacation in Olympia, Wash.) that she thought it best for me to move which I did on the 16th of August. I rec’d the Xmas Bulletin of 1943 so that was one not returned to you. I enjoyed it very much.
I will close, hoping for an early reply.
Most respectfully, [3563]

Dear Miss [3563]
We have your letter of August 20, and in accordance with your request, Mr. Cayce will attempt your life reading on the afternoon of Sept. 21, between the hour of 3:30 to 4:30, EWT.
We must tell you, however, that Mr. Cayce is not at all well.
Be sure to let us have any questions you may care to ask, in plenty of time.
Hoping that Mr. Cayce will be able to attempt to give your reading,
Sincerely, Gladys Davis [via Grace Premo], Sec’y ASS’N FOR RESEARCH & ENLIGHTENMENT

Dear Mr. Cayce:
I was so glad to hear from Gladys Davis, Sec’y on the 4th of Sept. but sorry to learn you were in ill health. Do hope you will be able to continue with your work, and to help others with their problems.
Miss Davis wrote in her letter of Sept. 4th that you would attempt to give my life reading on September 21st and for me to send my questions in plenty of time. I am anxious to ask ONLY questions which are proper for a life reading.
It seems MY WORK or MEANS OF LIVELIHOOD are uppermost in my thoughts. I want to be able to have a home to take my father to if necessary. He is now 76 but very well at present. I want to do nice things for him and if he were seriously ill to be able to have a good doctor and nurse for him.
There must be some work in which I could excel and be of service to others and therefore be of more value than I seem to be now.
Again, I have a half-sister in Idaho who has not been very well or happy. I would so much like to do something for her. My own brother, the only one I have, is headstrong and willful, it seems to me, but I do want him to be happy & successful and wish that we could be friends and that he would think well of me. Our mother would want us to be on good terms and not estranged. If I were successful in some business perhaps my brother would be proud of me and not resent any happiness that came to me. I do want to get along with him - if I just knew how.
These questions seem so self-centered and infantile. I am writing them in haste at the office for I must send them air-mail and register them this noon during my lunch period.
Most gratefully, [3563]
[GD’s note: She submitted 22 questions, re. past associations with every member of her family and casual contacts in a large government office, also re. finding lost jewelry, re. possible ulterior motives of certain men office associates who had been kind to her. She asked if numerology would throw any light on her problems - if she should change her name, address or phone number. She asked if there is such a thing as a soul mate, if so “is there a possible chance of meeting him in this life - 1944-45?”]

Mr. Edgar Cayce Ass’n for Research & Enlightenment Virginia Beach, Virginia Dear Mr. Cayce:
Thank you very much for the return of the check but so sorry you are not well enough to give the Life Reading at this time. Perhaps later when you are better.
I regret very much having ever accepted the appointment for the physical reading as my whole idea when I wrote you in Aug. 1943 was to secure a Life Reading. My very first application was for a Life reading - NEVER a PHYSICAL READING.
I do hope you will improve in health very soon.

Dear Sir,
In August 1943 an application for a Life reading was made for me but owing to your health it could not be given in Sept. 1944.
I am working 74 hours per week so have little time for leisure.
Would you accept this note as another application for a Life Reading?
Sincerely, [3563]

Dear Sir:
Your telegram in which you state you can be of no help at the moment was rec’d yesterday with regrets. When can I hope for a reading?
I bought the book “There is a River” by Thomas Sugrue at … here in … and the clerk who sold it to me informed me that your readings were all taken for the next two years.
The book “A Search for God” has been sent for and I hope it arrives soon as well as the 25 cent booklet offered by the Association with the paper on vocational guidance.
I am not a young person for I will be 42 next month - 29th. I was in the East for 8 years but was forced to return to … last January - seemingly a nervous breakdown. My mother passed on in July leaving me bereft of all affection & love. My father and I were never very close and my brother is abusive at times. My brother has threatened to have me adjudged incompetent and placed in a state institution. I tried so hard to have a life of my own in the East.
If you could help me soon I would be so grateful.
Sincerely, (Miss) [3563]

Dear Sir:
Your letter of the 20th was rec’d yesterday. Twelve months seems such a long time but I have enclosed my application with check.
My address may not be the same a few months from now for I don’t know what changes may take place with me.
I believe my nervousness stems from frustration and loneliness. My life seems to have no pattern - just a blank. If I could find my right work & place - some place to build for the future. I tried to hold the position I had held for six years but there was so much antagonism I seemed to break under it. Miss [3563]
B3. 1/4/44 [3563]‘s letter: …I am feeling much better and have gained weight but I still continue to have many sleepless nights and a feeling at times as if a motor ran in my stomach. These two conditions are very annoying and I would certainly like to know how to be rid of them if possible.
There is also a hurting in the region of the rectum. Not within the last month but it has awakened me at night from a sound sleep and would last for a half hour or forty-five minutes and then stop and not occur again for several days or weeks.
I want to be a well balanced person, to be healthy both in mind and body. Please help me if you can.
Sincerely (Miss) [3563]
