This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 23rd day of January, 1944, in accordance with request made by the self - through friend, Miss […], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research and Enlightenment, Inc.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. (Notes read to and transcribed by Jeanette Fitch.)]
In her home on the left Time of Reading side of the road going 4:30 to 4:45 P. M. Eastern War Time. up, two miles …, N.C.
-
GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes - a very lovely environ.
-
Here we have conditions that have been of longstanding and long drawn out. These began with a disturbance through the lack of vital energies to supply red blood cells to the bone of the rib area. Then with a strain in the pelvic area and the upper portion of the lower limb, on the left side, an irritation was caused to the head and then to the structural portion or covering of bone itself. This set up such irritations that we have the form of palsy or a quivering of the body, a weakness in this limb. This is not sclerous or a complication of liver disturbance but the lack of bone structural activity.
-
Do keep up all the rubs that are being given over the body, but these will be found to be much better if there is used this combination of oils:
Olive Oil…2 ounces, Peanut Oil…2 ounces, Lanolin (liquefied)…1/2 ounce.
-
Do give the body most of the diet being given, but add broiled calves’ liver; not hog liver, but calves’ liver.
-
Do give the body Infra-Red Light treatments over the back portion of the ribs, which would cover the spine and the areas from the lower portion - or the sacral and lumbar area. Give this treatment three times a week for about thirty minutes at each period, only the Infra-Red. Follow this treatment immediately with the oil rubs. On other days the oil rub would be given of evening when the body is prepared to rest.
-
These, as we find, offer the better opportunity for activity. When possible, even though under strain, do move about. This will be required unless much better circulation is established.
-
Do keep up the daily massages.
-
Do keep the alimentary canal cleansed.
-
Occasionally give a high colonic irrigation.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Should we keep up an alignment? (A) As just indicated, every day or evening when prepared for rest, do give the alignment - or the adjustment and the massage, but use the oils with same.
-
(Q) Is the diet now being taken alright? (A) As indicated, do add the calves’ liver broiled. Occasionally have pigs’ feet (not pickled) chicken necks - prepared so that the small tender bones may be masticated.
-
(Q) Are her two chief disturbances related? In what way? (A) As indicated from the lack of blood and those conditions in the areas outlined.
-
(Q) Is the urination abnormal? What should be done? (A) This is partly from pressures in colon and will be aided by the colon cleansing occasionally. Such colonics may be three to four weeks apart. These will aid in correcting the conditions, as well as the little change in the diet. For of course, a great deal of liquid causes a great deal of activity, but if this were to stop - without these poisons eliminated - we would have kidney and bladder trouble.
-
(Q) How soon may we see the beginnings of the cure? (A) This depends upon the responses, but we should see it in the course of two to three weeks, especially when beginning with the Infra-Red Light.
-
(Q) Any suggestions to meet constipation troubles? (A) The colonics will aid the most in this direction.
-
We are through with this reading.

Reports & Follow-up
R1. GD’s note: The reports below contain correspondence with Miss [3587]‘s friend and nurse. One question was asked 10/4/44 in anticipation of a Ck. Physical which did not take place on account of EC’s illness: “Why am I so lacking in spirituality that I can make so little progress?” Evidently this question was submitted by the friend-nurse.
R2. 1/30/44 Friend’s letter:
…, N.C.
Thank you sincerely for the Reading which came three days ago and which seems very sane and reasonable.
We are following directions as far as we are able in the out-of-the-way place.
Some calves liver (by a wonderful stroke of luck) we did obtain. When we shall be able to get more we cannot tell. How often should Miss [3587] have it?
Her nurse wants me to ask if an “extract of liver” could be used as well in place of the broiled liver when the latter is unobtainable. She says such a thing is made in the form of a concentrated liquid.
The oil compound we have not yet been able to obtain. Have written to two places for it. In the meantime we are using the one ingredient we can get here - the olive oil - and Miss [3587] thinks it is helping her.
As to an Infra-Red Lamp - where under our war conditions could we possibly get one? BUT - we already have one!!! She used it some time ago, saw no good results, so ceased using it. Now, in connection with the oil rubs it may work.
Do you know how near to the body it is safe to hold the lamp for those thirty minutes?
Her nurse asks me how long she should rub in the oil. Do you know?
The chicken neck we have not yet gotten hold of; but surely chickens must be obtainable here. How often should they and the pig’s feet be given to her? “Occasionally” the Reading says. Once a week? Once in two or three weeks? Or oftener?
You speak approvingly of her desire to walk and her inability to sit or lie down long at a time. She now asks me to tell you that unless she gets better and stronger, the walking may become impossible owing to an increasing tendency to FALL DOWN. She has fallen several times but has so far escaped any serious results. Is this falling a feature of paralysis agitans? I am addressing this letter to Mr. Cayce because I do not know to whom else to address it.
I am hoping, however, that some of his staff may know the answers to my questions from their knowledge of other Readings and directions.
So burdened a man as Edgar Cayce should not be expected to do this. “4500 Readings ahead” is appalling. As I see it 365
- 52 = 313 week-days a year 2 readings per day = 626 per year 4500 divided by 626 = 7 yrs - 118 days. Appalling?
How about “check readings”? How and when can they be made? Sometime in 1951 or 52? When are they considered necessary?
There is one discrepancy to which I should call your attention: The Reading was appointed for 3.30 to 4.30 P.M. by you; and in my letter I used the same figures - purposely
- lest there should be any misunderstanding. That is the period of the day that we observed (with prayer) as you asked.
But on the first page of your Reading you give the time as from 4.30 to 4.45. Was that the stenographer’s error?
Sorry to bother you with so many questions. Don’t worry Mr. Cayce with them if you can help it.
Yours sincerely, […]
R3. 2/27/44 Friend’s letter:
My dear Mr. Cayce:
Miss [3587] has been carrying out the directions given in the Reading as far as able.
The infra-red ray has been given three times a week. Oil rubbing has been followed - BUT - two of the ingredients have been difficult to get - the LANOLIN and the peanut oil. We have at last secured the lanolin, but the peanut oil still eludes us.
Now we have heard that it is scarce and can be obtained only through a HOSPITAL. Can YOUR HOSPITAL by any chance get it for us. If so please send us as much as you can (the rubs seem to take a good deal of oil) and let me know the bill so I may at once send check.
Miss [3587] has been sleeping better lately and elimination has improved very much. Shaking still continues unabated.
Yours truly […]
R4. 3/4/44 GD’s letter:
Miss […] …, N.C.
Dear Miss […]:
Due to Mr. Cayce’s illness, I am, at this late date, attempting to answer your recent letter.
The broiled calves liver should be given two or three times a week, or as often as the body can obtain it and take it without tiring of it. The readings do not often recommend liver extract, though I suppose this could be used if the fresh liver is unobtainable.
The Olive Oil, Peanut Oil, and Lanolin may be obtained from any big drug store, or you may order it from: Mr. T. R. Wirsing, 1001 Third St., S.W. Roanoke, Virginia. The ordinary Lanolin is used but is to be melted just before the ingredients are combined. You may order the oil separately and combine them yourself or you may have Mr. Wirsing combine them for you.
I am very glad that you already have the Infra-Red Lamp. This lamp is to be used about forty-two inches from the body. She should begin seeing much better results when the oil rubs can be given after each treatment with the Lamp, using all three ingredients suggested. The oils should be massaged into the body as long as they will be absorbed each time; that is, each time use as much oil as the body will absorb.
The chicken necks, pigs feet, etc. should be included in the diet once or twice a week.
Regarding her tendency to fall when attempting to walk, it would seem that this is a natural result from the lack of vital energies to supply red blood cells. If this is not corrected, or if the vital energies are not supplied, this condition may develop into what is termed paralysis agitans. However, I believe that with these treatments, and especially following the diet outlined, she should soon begin to overcome this tendency. Regarding Check Readings, it is not indicated that one will be necessary in this case - unless some unforeseen condition arises. If it does become necessary, Mr. Cayce would, no doubt, be able to get in a Check Reading for her, along with other Check Readings, without too great a delay.
As to the time of the reading, I do not remember just why this reading was late being given but, now and then certain interruptions in schedule make it impossible for Mr. Cayce to go into the reading “right on the dot”. However, this does not make any difference especially in this case, if you were observing the hour appointed. It is much better that the reading be given a few minutes after the hour appointed than a few minutes before the hour appointed, because you are still in the prayerful attitude seeking help.
Hoping that this is the information you need and that Miss [3587] shows further signs of improvement.
Sincerely yours, [signed] Gladys Davis, Secretary to Mr. Cayce [GD/jf]
R5. 6/26/44 Friend’s letter:
Mr. Edgar Cayce, Virginia Beach, Va.
Dear Mr. Cayce:-
It was I who telephoned to you to-day. Or rather, I stood by and coached the friend who spoke for me, because I am partially deaf and cannot hear well over the phone.
I doubt if you were able to place me and my ill friend, [3587], for whom you gave a reading last January.
You give so many Readings that it must be quite impossible to keep up with them.
To help you locate this one in your file, your paper was mailed to me Jan. 25th. It’s number seems to be …
We have faithfully followed the directions given, but Miss [3587] has grown steadily worse.
Last night her night-nurse reports that she had no sleep at all, that she shook all night long. Miss [3587] has for some little time been longing to go to Virginia Beach; and she was quite sure that you had some sort of Hospital there, either directly under your control or one that would receive your clients.
Allopathic remedies hurt her - are too strong for her. Homeopathy and NatureCure are best for her, one or both.
Do you know of any HARMLESS sedative for lessening pain when it becomes unbearable? One that does not make the patient lose consciousness? Here in North Carolina we know of no homeopathic doctor. All are allopaths. Do you know of any good hospital where she could have care but no allopathic drugs? This should be in a cool climate where the boiling summer heat would not reach her.
She still walks and walks and walks in spite of her bad legs (Paget’s Disease). Walking helps to keep down the shaking of the arms; but she has to be led and must sit VERY, VERY often. Could you give her a Check Reading? Is there any hope for her?
We greatly enjoy the extracts from the readings which come to us each week.
Yours in great distress, […]
R6. 7/3/44 EC’s letter:
Dear Miss […]:
Thank you very much for yours of the 26th.
Yes, when I was talking over the phone, I realized who this was for. I realized, too, from the reading that had been given that there is only a promise of maybe help for Miss [3587], and apparently from your letter, very little, if any, help has come to her as yet.
I appreciate the position in which you are put. I wish I knew how to answer you. How far are you from High Point? There is a doctor there, who I am sure would co-operate with you - Dr. Edward P. Brenner, North Main Street, High Point, N.C.
There are quite a number of people who have places around Asheville. They are of the neuropathic and osteopathic schools. No, we have no hospital here. We did have at one time, but that has been closed for some years.
It might be several weeks, Miss […], before we could possibly get a check reading, but we will do this if Miss [3587] would like it just as soon as possible. We will try to see if there can be some suggestions as to where and with whom she might be able to get help. This might be the best way for us to undertake this. Let me know if she wishes this check reading made.
I appreciate more than I can tell you the circumstances and I wish there was something that we could do.
Thanking you a lot for your interest and trusting that we may indeed be the means of a real help, I am
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce [EC/wi]
R7. 7/27/44 Friend’s letter:
My dear Mr. Cayce:
Thank you sincerely for the appointment for a check reading on Oct. 19th. I hope it will not be too burdensome for you.
Where we will be by that time I can’t tell you now. We are in dire need of help. Is it the same in Virginia? Our day nurse for Miss [3587] leaves Aug. 16th at latest. The night nurse MAY hold out, but is a woman with a family and gets less rest in the day than she needs.
I am doing much of the housework which is heavy for any 87 year old woman.
All sanitariums that we hear of are full - no room. So what?
I have sent for the pamphlet you advised and also for the one about the Essenes. Have always wanted to know more about them.
Again with thanks as Miss [3587] is needing me I must close,
Yours gratefully, […]
R8. 10/4/44 Friend’s letter:
Mr. Edgar Cayce, Virginia Beach, Va.
My dear Mr. Cayce:-
The 19th of October draws near and you asked for our letter concerning it at least two weeks before the date set.
We were very sorry to hear that you have been so over burdened with work, but hope, that by shifting as much of the office work as possible to other shoulders, your strength and health have [been] regained.
Miss [3587] is, I believe, better in certain ways. For example, her backbone is straighter. She seems to be overcoming constipation. She has less and less need to use enemas or kneadings. We have tried to follow your directions in every particular.
- Are we following them correctly? 2. Please study the pelvic region and tell why it and the back are so painful that lying down or sitting must be relieved by walking every little while. The following questions are made by Miss [3587], herself: 3. Why am I so lacking in spirituality that I can make so little progress? 6. What is my sin? 7. How can I cure it? 8. May we hope for a cure of the shaking arms; i.e. paralysis agitans? 9. Is this caused by the trouble in pelvic region? 10. How can I get renewed eyes and teeth? 11. I have a tendency to fall when walking. Why?
- When may I expect a cure? Or must I go on in this way indefinitely?
We are living in the same place on … Mt. - two miles from the town of …, up a winding road - that we were when the original Reading was given.
This time (Oct. 19th between 10.30 a.m. and 11.30) we plan to take the Reading in the S.W. bedroom - Miss [3587]‘s bedroom
- and shall prayerfully await the same.
Yours sincerely, (Miss) […] and Miss [3587]
R9. 10/6/44 Friend and Mrs. [3587]‘s letter:
My dear Mr. Cayce,
Here is one more question to be added to the list sent you Oct. 4th for the Oct. 19th Check Reading:-
Miss [3587]‘s dentist now says that she believes Miss [3587]‘s condition is due to decayed teeth. Please ask about this.
I think this dentist wants to pull all of the teeth and give Miss [3587] an entire upper and lower set of false teeth. Could she stand this? and is it necessary?
Yours truly, Miss […] and Miss [3587]

Dear Friends:
Is it true that Edgar Cayce has passed over into the Spirit World? A notice of his death, taken, from a Norfolk paper, was sent me by a friend.
What shall we do without him? I sympathize deeply with you and with Thomas Sugrue.

Miss […] and I are trying to do what we can - or somewhat more than we SHOULD to help the Association for Edgar Cayce’s sake.
Miss [3587] is still here, but much weaker than when last we wrote you, we have a night nurse and a day nurse in constant attendance now, so you can see why I say “more than we should”.
Besides, these heavy expenses we have a number of friends in devastated Europe whom we are trying to help.
I wish Mr. Cayce could give us some word regarding the atomic bomb. Will it bring happiness or devastation to the world?
I enclose check for $100.00 Please make out 10 shares to [3587] and 10 shares to yours truly, […]

Association for Research and Enlightenment Virginia Beach, Va.
Friends: This letter I hope you will not misunderstand. I ask you not to send me any more papers, Diary Letter, Readings or Bulletin. Why? Because it is a waste of your time and mine. My friend, Miss [3587] for whose benefit I first wrote to you, continues seriously ill. We have a day-nurse and a night-nurse for her. More and more household and business duties are falling on my shoulders. For months now I have not had the time to do any reading for myself so have not read any of the above papers. Why waste postage and articles?
This does not mean any ill-will to the Assoc. but rather a desire to benefit it.
I have just celebrated my 89th birthday. My eyes are not what they were 70 years ago. Reading is more difficult.
Please accept my blessing and the enclosed check.
Yours sincerely, […]
R15. 6/10/52 Mailing re ECP stockholders meeting, addressed to both Miss [3587] and her friend, was returned marked DECEASED for both of them.
Background
Background
B1. 1/15/44 Miss [3587] suffers from two serious troubles - PAGET’S DISEASE which affects the bones (in her case chiefly the bones of the lower right leg) and PARALYSIS AGITANS, which causes almost constant shaking of the arms.
QUESTIONS
- Are these two related? That is, has one of these caused the others? If so, which is which?
- What is the root cause of both?
- Could CONSTIPATION be the root cause? From girlhood (she will be 69 in May ‘44) she has suffered from constipation. We think we are gradually controlling this. Strong, allopathic medicines hurt her. She has responded much better to homeopathic remedies.
- URINATION is very frequent, but we think this may be accounted for by the large quantities of liquid taken (See diet.)
- Are the various things we are doing for her of any help? Are any of them harmful?
a. DIET:- No meat, no tea or coffee. A great deal of skimmed milk. Fish - both fresh and dried. Vegetables - cooked and raw - whole wheat bread. Fruit, oranges, pears, apples, lemons, and others in season.
- A great deal of rubbing of the arms from the wrists upward.
- Much walking (with assistance). As she can lie on back only (or on side a VERY little) lying and sitting become tiresome, hence much walking is demanded.
- Every evening an “alignment” is given her, according to the teachings of Dr. John L. Hurley of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. this consists in a certain manipulation of the spine and around the hips and sacrum. She finds this somewhat restful. Is it of any real value.
- If you are able to help her, how soon may we hope to see the beginning of the cure.
