This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 22nd day of January, 1944, in accordance with request made by the mother - Mrs. […], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research and Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by Mrs. Bascomb Harrell.

1. GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them:

2. EC: As we find, there are disturbances. These are the effects of indiscretions in the body of the parent of this entity, as well as the prenatal or karmic debt of the entity itself, [3603].

3. These may be materially aided. They will not be entirely relieved through mechanical applications alone; that is, from just pathological conditions. For these conditions are also in the mental and soul self, and the greater help will come with these applications being followed while the body is in the care of someone who would give constant spiritual counsel - as a Unity student or Science student - yet these would interfere with the mechanical or pathological conditions to be corrected, for they are very definite. Or one of spiritual or divine science rather than Christian Science who would give the body counsel in its developing era or period of unfoldment of spiritual self, of body emotions, of mental abilities, to correct these relationships and these activities - from the spiritual desire to be clean every whit.

4. Few people have considered that injunction regarding being perfect in the day and generation, or clean every whit. These are body, mind and soul.

5. Pathologically we find there are those adhesions in the lacteal duct area as associated or connected with the pubic centers in this body. These cause, when there is the digestion or when there are activities of certain elements or environs, what might be called seizures, falling sickness, epilepsy or the contraction or spasmodic condition in the area of the 1st and 2nd cervical, where the emotions through the superficial circulation or the sympathetic and the cerebrospinal system do not coordinate in their entrance to brain reflexes.

6. If there will first be, then, this training in spiritual desires, the determination of the body-mind to be every whit clean from the spiritual self, the mental self, we would then make these applications:

7. For an hour each day, three days in succession each week (the same three days each week), we would apply Castor Oil Packs. After each three-day series, take internally at least two tablespoonsful of Olive Oil.

8. Do this for at least three weeks, then leave off for six weeks, and so on.

9. But after each application do give the body a massage especially to break up the lesions in the areas of the lacteal duct and in the connections of the sympathetic or glandular centers at the head of the pubic area. While the pubic centers are not to be covered with the oil packs, do use the massages here after these corrections will be physically made.

10. Use the Radio-Active Appliance for an hour each day just before retiring at night. Keep the attachment plate very clean. While there will be nothing felt in the vibrations from these, do make these applications - and through that period study the scripture, or teach it to the body - whoever would direct this phase of the entity’s experience.

11. Do these and we will bring better conditions for the body, [3603].

13. (Q) What is the best environment for the child? (A) As just indicated, the association in Divine Science, Unity or Christian Science, provided they do not require that the body be kept from making these administrations for the physical and mental self.

14. (Q) What is the best way to discipline her? (A) This will be in the same manner suggested. And if there is not found the response within, there will never be the response without - you might as well put the body away.

15. (Q) If a special school would be best for her, what school? (A) This will be school enough if you will follow these. If there is to be any special training, that along the line of mathematics and geography should be a part of the experience, but study the scripture itself - this should be sufficient. This is not to make the body goody-goody. It should be joyous in its activities.

16. We are through with this reading.

R1. 10/20/55 Verbal report by Mrs. Harrell:

“When the baby [3603] was about six months old it was noticed that she would only stand on the right foot. Eventually it was discovered that she could not use her left arm. The doctors in Trinidad suggested that she be brought to Richmond, Va., to Dr. Graham, a polio doctor, which the mother did.

“I didn’t see [3603] until she was about nine. She had just come back from the hospital - she had been at death’s door in a Roanoke Rapids, N.C. hospital. Her fever had been higher than any that they had a record of, for anyone to still live, and the doctors could not determine why. She was hemorrhaging from the intestines and they couldn’t account for it. The doctors had no idea what caused this nor as to what she had.

“After this experience the mother took the child to Richmond, Va., and there the doctors seemed to be just as nonplused as ever, offering no hope, etc. This brought the case up to the age of thirteen, when I again came to know something of the facts through the mother.

“Through a neighbor doctor [3603] was taken to N.Y. and put through a clinic, in a mental hospital. The doctors there said there was nothing that could be done for [3603] - that it was prenatal - except to give her something to keep her quiet. Then they suggested the use of Phenobarbital, that it would keep her quiet. So she began taking 4 tablets a day - 1 before each meal and 1 before going to bed.

“She had always been very religious and kept a large picture of Jesus over her bed with a light shining on it. She became interested in the Catholic church and wanted to join, so her mother let her. The priest got her into a Catholic school in Chicago where they dealt with subnormal children. She would go there and stay a while and then come back home. One of the sisters at this home or school told the mother that while [3603] was there she never had a tantrum and that she was wonderful with the children - and they taught her to act as a beautician to the younger children. She was continuously taking this drug Phenobarbital, and that seemed to keep her from having convulsions.

“She didn’t go beyond the 9th grade in school. After she began taking the drug she became even more dull, and the mother took her out of school. It was after this that she was sent away to the Catholic school. She would get homesick and come back from time to time.

“The reason the mother wanted the reading was that she had spent so much money on doctors, etc., that she wanted to know whether or not there was any use, or hope. At the time she was living with her sister who had several children. During this time [3603] would go into tantrums that would involve the mother, and much force and violence. [3603] would take clothes and destroy them. This kind of thing would come about just over being told she should not take a fourth or fifth helping of food, etc., and the mother could not control her by force or otherwise. This kind of thing did not seem to build up to a convulsion. [3603] would always know when a convulsion was coming on, and no matter where she was she would sit down. All the blood would seem to drain from her face and she would lose consciousness. She would come to shortly thereafter but her color would not come back for about two hours.

“Just recently I saw her. She looks like her mother but is just the opposite in size. Her father was a big man and so is [3603] - she is almost as big as GD, and her mother is tiny. As time went on and she continued in the Catholic church, although her mentality is very subnormal even today, she has become sweet, and has the voice of an angel - or a voice like music. She still walks with a limp, and her left hand never developed normally, and she still prefers to be around young children.

“Through the years her mother has taken care of her as if she were an infant, hundreds of times staying with the child when it said ‘I don’t want you to go.’ The mother would then undress and stay-with the child. This dependence became more noticeable after [3603] became an adolescent, and after she started taking Phenobarbital. Her mother has devoted her entire life to this child, and the doctors in N.Y. told her that she had done a near-impossible thing, to deal with a child of the daughter’s mentality so effectively and over such a period of time.

“She doesn’t have convulsions any more that I know of, and doesn’t have the tantrums.”

B1. 10/21/43 Mother’s letter to EC: “Am enclosing $20.00 and asking for a physical reading for my 13 yr. old daughter, [3603]. She has been having slight convulsions for three years past and has had very little help for them from doctors.

“Edna Harrell advised me to get this information from you. Please let Edna know when you can give us this appointment and she will advise me. We feel that help for her is urgent.

“Thank you for your kindness, I am”

“P.S. Please address your answer to this letter to Edna rather than to me. I have known Edna for years and she is stronger and feels better this summer than she has in years. I am sure you can help me too.

“Questions: What is the cause of her present condition? Is it pre-natal or due to a birth injury. What can be done to cure or remedy this condition? Do you advise a special school - if so - which? If she is better off at home under normal conditions, how is the best way to control her, or rather, discipline her? Should I be firm or gentle and lenient? She is very high-strung. Please tell me how to guide and direct her so that she might live a healthy, happy, useful life.

“I must leave her in care of my sister as I work in an office six miles away. She is in the 6th grade in school.

“Thank you Mr. Cayce. God bless and keep you!”
