This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 2nd day of February, 1944, in accordance with request made by the self - Dr. [3650], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by the book, THERE IS A RIVER.

Time of Reading 10:50 to 11:00 A. M. Eastern War Time. …, California.

1. GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them:

2. EC: Yes, we have the body here, Dr. [3650].

3. As we find, there are conditions of which the body should take cognizance. Yet if there is too great a stress, or if there is held in the mental self a fear, there will come those conditions that are spoken of by the psalmist “That which I feared has come upon me.”

4. Then, apply in nature that which will meet the needs for eliminating any infection that may have been carried in the circulation from those disturbances which have existed. This will in the physical self eliminate the sources, if the fear is eliminated from the mental self that blocks such activity in the living organism in the body.

5. While not settled in any areas of the body, there is a contaminated element carrying destructive forces in its body-cells. For these are units of infection not entirely eliminated. They are in the blood flow, but with this application should be entirely eliminated from the blood system and no portion of the body, then, would become contaminated.

6. Take these properties rather in series, each day for at least a week, then leave off three to four days for the reaction. Then begin again and take for seven days, then have a rest period of three to five days, and then take again. Then rest a period of some six weeks, and then take another course. Prepare in this manner:

7. Obtain the common Plantain, fresh, and make into a tea. Cut the fresh leaves and fill a cup measure - not mashed down, but fill with the fresh leaves cut very fine. Use only china, enamel or glassware. Then fill the cup with boiling water, within half an inch of the top. Let stand for thirty minutes, covered. Then strain and drink this fusion - this amount each day. Make it fresh each day.

8. At least twice each week apply the ultra violet light with the green light [glass?] projected between the light and the body. To be sure, some may question as to the feasibility of diverting the ultra violet ray from the body, but it is the ozone and the type of light deflected by the green glass that is needed. Green in itself is healing. Preferably use a single strength colored glass, not painted, but the green colored glass - preferably plain, not frosted; such as prepared by The American Plate Glass Company. Use this a minute to a minute and a half, especially on the hand and arm and from the back - over the lumbar-sacral areas.

9. Do these and be consistent with the diet. Never too much of meats of any kind. Only fish and fowl. No other characters of meats. Occasionally a little lamb may be taken, but not fried foods.

10. Do these and we will prevent, we will eliminate the sources of infection that have existed in the body.

11. Ready for questions.

12. (Q) Is there active trouble in the gall-bladder at this time? (A) Will not be when these properties have been taken in the system. For this is a blood purifier and as the blood is purified and the light rays produced their radial activity on superficial circulation, as well as the deeper circulation, we will eliminate these disturbances - unless there are foods taken that cause greater trouble; as too much sweets, too much fats.

13. (Q) What causes the symptoms in the upper chest of a feeling of constriction with some pain, which has been present ever since I was in Munich, Germany in 1931? (A) This is a suppression caused by some of those experiences of the mental body through that particular period. This is psychopathic, not a condition of the physical being - yet it reflects, to be sure, upon the physical body. But not a true pathological condition.

14. (Q) Would intravenous treatment with penicillin for chronic tooth infection or for any other infectious pathology be advisable when penicillin is available? (A) It would be very advisable, not necessarily for this particular body - if we use the properties that have been indicated - but for other bodies in a general manner, good.

15. (Q) Why do I have a very severe ache in the lower part of my back while I am in bed - around 5:00 or 6:00 o’clock in the morning - especially if I lie on my back? (A) This is from those tendencies that are to be eliminated by the use of the ultra violet treatment - not more than a minute and a half. Begin at first with a minute.

16. (Q) What causes the bad breath and disagreeable taste in the mouth shortly after eating - especially after eating ice-cream, bread, cream or pumpkin pie? (A) The inability of the stomach to eliminate all of digested foods or those in the state of digestion. But with a better circulation set up, this should be eliminated.

Use a little charcoal once in a while. This will absorb the disagreeable conditions in the system. Preferably use that character prepared at Kellogg’s.

17. (Q) Would you advise me to go to Dr. W. B. Dakin for preventive treatment for my prostate gland at this time? (A) Not necessarily, if we will do these others in the present - unless other conditions arise that are not existent in the present.

Do those things indicated and we will have better conditions for this body.

My dear Edgar:

The statement of Viscount Richard Haldane “My belief that the more experience is spiritual the more it is real” has influenced my whole life during the past fifty years; has been a guiding beacon for me for many, many years for it is my opinion also.

My two trips to India and my association with leading educators and philosophers of that land whose culture is of such magnitude and antiquity that Will Durant writes “when America has been able to develop one tenth of the culture of India it can then begin to consider itself a great nation”, have afforded me added comfort and poise.

Our obligations in art, literature, science, religion, philosophy and all human knowledge are universal for we have inherited from all lands and all peoples from Atlantis, Egypt, China, India and down through the ages to the present day and my own travels through the seven seas and all of the continents make me very humble and very appreciative of the contributions we have received from those “who have gone before.” As Sir Isaac Newton expressed this appreciation “the reason that I seem to be able to see more clearly than many of my contemporaries is because I am standing on the shoulders of giants.” By this statement Sir Isaac meant that by studying the wisdom of his predecessors - such men as Plato, Aristotle, Pythagoras, Aknaton, Jesus, Socrates, Buddha, Sir Francis Bacon, Pericles, etc., he was able to stand on the broad platform of their combined knowledge to comprehend the present and glimpse the future of mankind with greater clarity than most men of his generation.

My travels have not only made me tolerant of other races and familiar with their dress, habits and customs but they have made me appreciative of the common foundations of all of the great religions of the world throughout the ages.

My good friend, Manly Palmer Hall is possessed of extra sensory perception in a marked degree just as you are Edgar, and so all of his books (and he has written more than fifty) are of great worth to me in understanding the meaning of life (for there is no death) and in assisting me to be helpful to others.

His two books - “Facing the Facts” and “Facing the Future” deal instructively with current educational, political, economic and governmental problems, while his books - “Healing - the Divine Art”, “How to understand your Bible” and “The Lost Keys of Masonry” open a new understanding of how much we owe to antiquity for our philosophy, our religion, our sciences and our social economy.

I have reached a new and beautiful appreciation of the Christian and Jewish Scriptures by reading and rereading his “How to Understand your Bible” and applying that understanding to our everyday problems. In a practical sense I can now better understand how Luther Burbank was able to accomplish the “miracles” that he did and what was the driving force that brought to Henry Ford the ability to make his great contribution to the world’s civilization in the industrial field and in the cultural reconstruction of America.

In England and Scotland Manly Hall has been called “America’s greatest philosopher” and I am certain in my own belief that in the years to come the whole world will recognize Manly as America’s Greatest.

When I first began to study Manly Hall’s books some eighteen years ago I thought I understood them quite well, but during the past eighteen years my understanding and appreciation have so widened that as I look back now over the course that I have travelled during the past two decades I realize how really deficient in understanding I was even 15 years ago.

I realize that most of Manly Hall’s writings will be comprehended and appreciated by only the few who can truly evaluate esoteric meanings and yet he is so gracious that when I have him lecture at our Kiwanis Clubs and other groups of business and professional men, students, etc. he brings his talks down to a level where any twelve to fourteen year old boy can understand him perfectly, and his every audience is just thrilled with his words of wisdom and high purpose. I had him talk to 125 men at our Glendale Kiwanis Club two weeks ago on the subject “A Philosopher’s View of the Post-war World” and of all the fine speakers appearing before our club none has so profoundly affected his hearers or received such universal acclaim.

Manly Hall thoroughly believes in the necessity of the study of comparative religions and I am entirely in agreement with his views and experience but you may have no interest in any departure from some simple Christian faith of your childhood and under no circumstances would I endeavor to change the faith of anyone. My wife wishes to continue the beautiful faith in which she grew up and she can find no interest or comfort in Manly Hall’s “How to Understand your Bible” whereas for me the Holy Bible has brought a message ten times as beautiful and practical since I read and reread this interpretation. In childhood I was filled with questions about which I seemed to find no help in satisfactorily solving, but with Manly furnishing the key with which to unlock the mysteries the solutions just naturally come as a matter of course. In the philosophical section of “There is a River” I found similar help.

One day Dr. E. Stanley Jones and I were talking and he told me of a sojourn of a month that he passed in the Ashram of Mahatma Gandhi. During that period the two men would have a daily discussion. On alternate days throughout the month each would explain to the other what religion meant to him. Their discourse was most kindly, temperate and tolerant and the end of the month of expressing their views to each other Dr. Jones was just that much stronger Christian and Gandhi was just that much more sure that he was right in his worship of Shiva. What was unquestionably true was that here was very little difference in the views of these two great religious leaders as to the importance of the great fundamental principles upon which true religion rests.

There undoubtedly was a difference of opinion regarding reincarnation, regarding the difference between the lives of Christ and Krishna, regarding the meaning of the Garden of Eden, etc. but as regards morality, mutual helpfulness, the Brotherhood of Man and the Fatherhood of God, what constitutes the good life and what the forces of evil are there was probably little difference of opinion.

And so there is hope for the world when two great religious leaders of different faiths can discuss great religious problems in mutual helpfulness and mutual kindliness.

I do not recall whether I have sent you copies of “Facing the Facts” and “Facing the Future” by Manly Hall or not, and so I am sending copies under separate cover.

Dear Dr. [3650]

Thanks very much for yours of the 20th, wish might have the opportunity to talk with you at some length, while am not making excuses for my ignorance or the material disadvantages to which have been placed, do appreciate your letter and your interest in our feeble undertakings here, am sure we must be adding a bit to the comfort of the physical well-being of many and lets hope a word now and then to those disturbed otherwise. To be sure have heard Mr. Hall lecture and we have several of his books in the Library here, believe it was you who sent us the two - Healing - the Divine Art - and How to understand your Bible. Too bad for me am such a poor reader, but do possibly get enough from them by hearing them discussed by members of our groups here who do read them, as to know something of their worth, and do wish to thank you for the two you are sending now. Just hope some day to get to read them myself, more of their worth might be passed on through me. Yet am for some reason hindered from reading much save the Bible as it is written. The thoughts tho you express about great teachers being of one mind and differing only in some minor problem - am sure would we stress the things in which we agree, and then LIVE them and say less and less of the differences we would make the world much more spiritual conscious.

Personally would like to know something of what has prompted the minds and hearts of all the great writers, but being hindered as am, will have to await the time when am privileged to do this. But am I to ask others to even listen to what may come through the messages as may come through me, am impelled to live and act as they direct me. Possibly this may be “the blind leading the blind” yet “by their fruits ye shall know them.”

My dear Edgar:

I am glad that the Association for Research and Enlightenment has been formed and is trying so conscientiously to bring man closer to his Creator and Director.

With all of the horrors of war fully realized, the boys who have served on the various battle fronts are coming back and will continue to come home with a fuller realization of their own Spiritual Reality and their privilege and obligation to convey to others just what their religion has meant to them when everything else upon which they have rested their faith and dependence in the past is swept away and they find themselves courageously acknowledging their lack and humbly appealing for the assistance of their Guardian Angel and their God.

Fortunately for me the past fifty years have proven conclusively that I can depend upon Divine Aid when I truly need it. Times too numerous to mention in my life have proven the correctness of this assertion. As Viscount Haldane in his autobiography states “The realization that the more things are spiritual the more they are real has influenced my whole life during more than fifty years”. And I am able to verify that statement through my own experiences.

There is a wave of true religious understanding encompassing the world now and it will surely bring a brighter day.

Dear Folks - I wrote the enclosed check a Month & more ago but have had so many things to attend to recently that it has not been sent.

I am on a trip to the Atlantic Coast and it may be possible for me to drive by Virginia City & say hello.

I really am interested in the research that you are conducting and the results you are securing. I am also interested in the work of the Landone [?] Foundation at Orlando Florida and the researches of Manly Hall & the Philosophical Research Society.

I have been wondering how many of Manly Hall’s books you have in your library - I should be happy to purchase & send you some of his later works if I have a list of those you already have. Of course, I believe that “There is a River” should be in every library and every branch throughout the country. Some of the books such as Sir Jas. Jeans “Physics & Philosophy”, White’s “Across the Unknown”, Francis J. Mott’s “Consciousness Creative”. The most recent works of Carl Jung and of Max Planck; all should have wider reading & appreciation.

There are many, many others which are factual and most stimulating.

Thank you for your letter of April 29th, enclosing your check for five dollars. We have applied this on an Associate Membership and enclose a blank for you to check and return to us, also your membership card.

From your letter I gather that you may already be headed this way, so this may not reach you soon. I do want to call your attention to our Congress June 17-23. It would be fine to have you with us at that time, or for a visit at any other time during the summer. I enclose a preliminary announcement of the Congress meetings and will mail you the printed program a bit later.

Your suggestions regarding books shows a fine knowledge of this general field. We would greatly appreciate any contributions you care to make to the library. We need a good library to parallel our study of the information in our files, as well as a way of stimulating the thinking of our members. My dear Mr. Cayce.

I had a long conversation with Dr. Lulu Waters this afternoon & she is greatly interested in the whole field of extra-sensory diagnosis, therapy & recordings with classification. I shall see her in New York at the A.O.A. Convention at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York next month. I know you are doing a wonderful job under severe handicaps in recording, classifying & making available your father’s readings.

Today I received by mail a copy of Manly P. Hall’s lecture on “Suggestion, Auto-Suggestion, and Hypnotic Diagnosis.”

It is a masterful presentation of this field of research & as soon as it is published I shall send you a copy.

I am sorry to have bothered you to search for my wife’s Hamilton Watch - I was hoping that it would turn up somewhere, for it disturbs me to think that our colored maid at the Montecello Hotel in Norfolk may have stolen it & so I was anxious to search every conceivable place that it might have been lost or mislaid. My dear Lynn:

I remember our conversation in 1946 with a great deal of pleasure. I think that your are doing a splendid work in continuing so far as possible the help, both material and spiritual, that your father gave to the world. And I know that your consecration and devotion will add to man’s understanding in many ways throughout the years.

During the past two years I have given a great deal of study to just what my field should cover in making my greatest contribution to the advancement of mankind and I have decided that for the next two or three years I should drop out of any association with the Association for Research and Enlightenment. After I have advanced father in the research in the cancer problem to which I have consecrated my life, I may be very glad to seek your advice and assistance.

Just at present, however, and I am sure for the next two years, any attempt to correlate my search and interpretation of the findings of the National Cancer Institute, at Bethesda, with the readings of Edgar (in the varied fields in which he operated) will prove confusing rather than helpful and will be too great a drain upon my vitality.

I have my background of nearly fifty years of dealing with cancer by the routes of diet and exercise, X-ray and radium therapy, and such varied surgical procedures as those of cold steel, electrolysis, electrical coagulation and desiccation, Percy cautery, Paquelin cautery, and electric scalpel and other modalities of actual cautery, as well as such chemical surgery as those with the use of Nitric acid, carbon dioxide snow, (I never did use liquid air) potassium and sodium hydroxide, dichlor, and trichlor acetic acid, the Tilton cancer paste, and other chemical escharotics.

I am justly proud of the percentage of lives that I have salvaged by these procedures but still not satisfied with what has been accomplished in the fields of prevention and cure of cancer in all its varied forms.

Such great advance has been made in the field of biochemical research in malignancy in the last ten years that I must concentrate on my studies along these lines with the help that I am getting from such books as the Biochemistry of Cancer, by Jesse Greenstein, the Physiological Basis of Medical Practice, by Best and Taylor, the “American Association for the Advancement of Science Conference on the Results of Cancer Research”, the “Approaches to Tumor Chemotherapy” by the A.A.A.S., the “Treatment by Diet” by Barborka, 1948 edition, “Neoplastic Diseases” by Jas. Ewing, etc., together with almost countless articles in many medical and scientific journals on the various phases of malignancy.

I am writing this explanation so that you may fully realize that even though I am deeply interested in the work that you are doing, I feel certain that if I am to be permitted after my physical death to bring back to other seekers in these fields, the greatest good for the greatest number I must acquaint myself as fully as possible with what science has yielded, before I pass to the Great Beyond.

My eyes will not permit me to study and correlate the readings of the A.R.E. and the other study and summarizing which I must do. I hope that you understand.

Manly Hall and I speak frequently of the work done by Edgar and he is very sympathetic with the work that you are doing.

I hope that when you are in Southern California you will visit his wonderful library - Philosophical Research Association at 3341 Griffith Park Blvd., Los Angeles 27, and I hope you will also visit the campus of the College of Osteopathic Physicians and the Surgeons with which institution I have been identified for more than fifty years. If I can act as your guide through these institutions I shall be happy to serve you.

Although I am not proceeding with any further connection with the Association for Research and Enlightenment I am enclosing my check for the sum of $10.50 for three copies of “There is a River” by Thos. Sugrue for friends of mine, and if I can find the name and publisher of a later book about Washington written by the same author I should be glad to order it.

I am indeed grateful that his life was saved through the help of Edgar and yourself.

A friend of mine just presented me with the review of “There is a River” in Tom Brennaman’s magazine.

I am sure that Edgar’s life and work will have greater and greater meaning as the years go by.

I wish you every success and fulfillment in the field that you have chosen and in which your consecration is so needed. Furthermore, I hope that you will not feel that I have deserted the cause of philosophy and metaphysics in so strongly realizing my basic needs in the physical and biological sciences for the present. Please remember also that I am deeply impressed with the significance of psychosomatic medicine (e.g. in “Gastric Digestion” by Wolf and Wolfe), and the role of extra-sensory perceptions as outlined in “Reach of the Mind” by my friend John Rhine of Duke University.

It is through the full comprehension and utilization of hypotheses like the one enclosed that I am endeavoring to expand my horizon.

As is usual in such adventure the conquest yields the commonplace, and this in turn yields a base from which further exploration becomes possible, I might almost say, inevitable.

I am sending you under separate cover an unedited transcript of a recent lecture by Manly which for me contains some of the essentials.

Dear Dr. [3650]:-

I certainly appreciate your writing me as fully as your did in your letter of March 2nd. I can entirely understand your point of view. I will be happy if you will keep me advised of progress in your research work and let me know if we may be of help at any time.

As you know, I expect to be in Los Angeles for our Western Conference there on April 2nd, 3rd and 4th, and hope at that time to have a chance to see and talk with you personally. I will be staying with Mr. and Mrs. Peter Ballbusch, 2359 Loma Vista Place, Lost Angeles 26, Calif., and of course, will be at the regular meetings at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.

By this time, you have probably received your copy of STRANGER IN THE EARTH. It will interest you, perhaps, to know that a few minutes after the book closes in time, Tom Sugrue picked up the telephone and called Edgar Cayce for a physical reading. From that point on, he began gradually to improve. He told me last night over the telephone that he had this week been on three radio programs, had spoken at two luncheons, including one in Hartford, Conn., and all in all, put in a rather strenuous week. He is still getting around with difficulty, but he is getting around, and physically, is in excellent health except for the results of the crippling effects of the serous burning that took place in the fever machine treatments.

I look forward with great interest to keeping in touch with you regarding cancer research. Miss Davis is now working on our cancer material and it will be available to you before too long now.

I am sure you will learn with regret of the death of Dr. [3650] on March 20th last. He was ill for a period of three months prior to his passing, his trouble being diagnosed as virus pneumonia. He did not respond to any treatment. An autopsy was preformed and a beginning cancer was found in the chest. Because of this fact I am thankful that he was taken and was thus spared probably a great deal of future suffering.

He was a great soul and looked forward with keen anticipation to the unfettered life beyond.

In your letter you say you are “mailing under separate cover a selection of current papers.” These have not arrived as yet, but when they do I will return them promptly so that you may place them elsewhere.

Dear Mr. Cayce:

I have never heard of your work until a few days ago when I heard a book review over the radio and one of the books reviewed was “There is a River” by Thomas Sugrue. I immediately secured a copy from my book dealer and upon reading the work I found the names of several of my warm personal friends. Dr. Percy Woodall of Birmingham, Alabama and Manly Palmer Hall of the Philosophical Research Society of Los Angeles are friends of mine, and Dr. Robert W. Bowling was a close friend before his death. I believe that the Doctor Bland spoken of on pages 147-8 of Mr. Sugrue’s book was Dr. Bowling [correct - GD] who was a graduate of a regular medical school and was practicing medicine before he lost his sight and became interested in osteopathy. He was a fine anatomist and one of the finest lecturers I have ever listened to. He taught anatomy and some other subjects in the Southern School of Osteopathy and he left the Southern School of Osteopathy to become a teacher with us at the College of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons in Los Angeles.

I am quite sure that there was no other blind doctor teaching anatomy at the Southern School for that institution consolidated with the S. S. Still College of Osteopathy in Des Moines in 1905, and Dr. Bowling came to us at that time. I can easily check the matter with Dr. Woodall. You or those with you may have misunderstood the name and thought it was Dr. Bland instead of Dr. Bowling.

But this letter is not for the purpose of suggesting any corrections in the book, but to seek your advice if that is possible. I have a difficulty that I do not seem to be able to overcome and I am sure that the main difficulty lies in the gastro-intestinal tract with other possible effects, either primary or secondary, in the pancreas, liver and gall bladder.

Briefly, my history is this: Diphtheria when I was seven, measles when I was ten. Toxic jaundice at 15 (duration about 10 days), Follicular tonsillitis followed by quinsy at 33. broken right hip leaving 1 1/4 inches of leg shortening at 29. Broken rib in South Atlantic in 1936. Tonsils removed at 35. Left hand amputated in 1942 for late X-ray effects from the period between 1900 and 1906 when I was using the X-ray for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. I inherit SLOW gastric digestive tendencies from my mother and my maternal grandfather.

In addition to the use of the X-ray as above stated I started practicing general surgery in 1904 and took special courses in surgery in the New York Postgraduate Medical School and Hospital in 1908, and many courses in surgery, anesthesia, obstetrics, etc. in the years that followed in institutions such as Queen Charlotte’s Lying-in Hospital and the East London Post Graduate Hospital in London, the Allgemeines Krankenhaus in Vienna and the one in Munich, and in all of the leading surgical clinics of America.

My practice since 1910 has been largely in the field of general surgery and radium therapy, although I was teaching orthopedic surgery in the College of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons from 1908 to 1935. Osteopathic therapy constituted my main professional activity from 1898 till 1908.

Since 1929 I have taken two trips around the world, spending about three years in China, India, Palestine and Syria, Egypt, South Africa, and from Capetown I came to Rio de Janeiro and then to Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Peru and Central America on my last trip around the globe. On my first trip around I spent a year in Europe, principally in Bavaria, England, France, Switzerland and Italy. I have made seven trips to Europe so I know the continent pretty well from North Cape in Norway to Thebes in Egypt and from the Black Sea to Andelusia in Spain. I mention these matters so that you may see that I may have exposed myself to many forms of tropical disease and other maladies.

In travelling through the islands of the South Seas I was affected by the heat on more than one occasion and I had dysentery severely while going from Manila to Singapore and some trouble in Siam and in India. I was in India during the two trips to that country a total of nine months.

The laboratory reports on one occasion showed an active dysentery from the entamoeba histolitica but laboratory studies for the last two years have shown no evidence of the amoebae or eggs.

I am one who uses very little medicine internally. I departed from this rule for a short period to apply active medication for the amoebiasis. I take a certain amount of vitamines and organic salts in addition to those in my regular foods. I have always used milk freely and use salads and green vegetables also freely. I take two meals daily, breakfast about 9.00 A.M. and dinner about 5.00 P.M. and sometimes a little orange juice about 1.00 P.M., usually nothing in mid-day. My use of cereals, bread and eggs is moderate and I use meat sparingly. I have never used tobacco or alcoholic drinks.

My symptoms are fullness in throat and upper chest with at times a clutching feeling, more or less nausea when I awaken in the morning, and always a dryness of mouth, metallic taste and offensive breath for which I use sen-sen and cepacol spray to the mouth and throat. There is no dental sepsis.

I am not sick and I am not well. The trouble started while I was on a trip around the world, North of the equator in 1931 and has been constant but of variable intensity for the past twelve years.

From your record I feel certain that I would gain valuable information if I could secure a “reading” from you regarding my case and of course I should be happy to pay for the opinion and advice.

I was examined thoroughly by many doctors at the Mayo Clinic in 1933 and again in 1940. They reported that they didn’t question my report on my subjective symptoms but frankly they could detect nothing by which they might classify either the cause or the nature of the malady.

I have had an occasional sharp pain in the region of the gall bladder and an occasional one in the region of the spleen, but the X-ray shows no signs of gall stones or kidney pathology, and examinations of blood and urine, gastric analysis, Wasserman and Kahn tests and electro-cardiographic studies give no information as to the nature or cause of the symptoms.

I retired from practice in 1942 immediately after the amputation of my hand. I am not rich and I am not poor and I wish to pay more than adequately for any suggestions which you may furnish if you are still giving readings. I really should like to understand my case more fully and my personal mystical experiences of the past make me very understanding and sympathetic with your procedures, and also make me realize that my Guardian Angel is watching over me and helping me every day that I live, so there is nothing so very unique and incomprehensible for me in your experiences.

My stay at the ashram of Sri Ramona Maharshi at Tirannimali and at the ashram of Sri Aurobindo in Pondicherry in India proved to me that these great religions leaders have lived through experiences similar to yours, although their experiences have been applied in a different manner.

I am also certain that Manly Hall receives his great wisdom from the same universal source that you receive your information, although he avoids discussing these matters because of the interminable controversy which has raged and still continues over any and all subjects relating to mystical or metaphysical experience.

Many of my close friends, high in the scientific and literary fields, have had extensive experiences in metaphysics but they will not discuss these matters generally because of the extent of the disbelief in mysticism throughout the world at this time; and yet there was never a greater mystic in the whole history of mankind than Jesus.

Understand from Mr. Sugrue’s biographical portrayal that you were born just a few months before I was. My birth date is Sept. 6, 1877 and I believe at 6.00 A.M.

I hope that you are still alive, that you still give “readings” and that you can and will furnish me with an analysis of my case.

Dear Mr. Cayce:

I am indeed happy to learn of your life and work. It does seem strange indeed that I never heard of you until a few weeks ago - especially since I have known since 1898 of the dependence which Dr. Andrew Taylor Still placed upon clairvoyance in making his diagnoses.

I am a profound believer in the justice of God’s laws and the rightness of things as they are.

This last statement sounds paradoxical in the face of the chaotic conditions prevailing in the world today, but realizing that we only truly grow under conditions of trial and adversity, it is quite believable that a thousand benefits will come to mankind as a result of just what is happening to mankind at this time.

We know that war increases our religious faith as well as our true patriotism. Oh, of course, on the 4th of July in peace times we wave flags and listen to platitudinous speeches and call that experience true patriotism, but not until we send our sons, sweethearts, husbands and brothers, yes, and even our daughters, or go ourselves, to the battle fronts to be wounded, to die and to kill do we truly know the fuller meaning of love of country, and manifest the willingness to sacrifice.

In a similar manner we go to church and conscientiously try to be good citizens and have concern for human welfare, but our deepest devotion comes only when human strength and courage fail and our religious faith is all that there is vouchsafed to us, and by which we are sustained.

War also breaks down inertia and changes fixed patterns, usually for the better. It is easy to cite hundreds of instances in which the erasure of inertia and the alteration of fixed patterns have conferred multitudinous blessings upon mankind. I could recite at least ten more fundamental ways in which the present war has benefitted the race - not the least of these is the economic faith and sense of independence and security which the conflict has brought to hundreds of boys and young men of my acquaintance, including many relatives (blood and by marriage). It is with a realization, almost of awe that I review the period from 1930 to the present time and note the change in psychology from one of defeatism and almost helplessness of the thirties to the confident aggressiveness and sense of security of the present. One of my nephews with a wife and child was dragging along on 65.00 per month, and is now a major in the army with 480.00 monthly pay, and his brother at age 34, earning 75.00 per month and unable to marry for economic reasons is now earning 350.00 per month working for Lockheed and happily married.

Again the statement of Henry Ford that the 100 billion dollars a year that the war is costing is a very low price to pay for the scientific advance applicable to human welfare that the war has produced. And so one might to on and on citing the benefits from war, if we were not brought up sharply by the realization of the horrors of war - its brutality and inhumanities, and increase in youthful delinquencies, the broken homes and broken bodies, the terrific waste of time, effort and physical resources, the religious degeneracy among those whose greed leads them to exploit the world’s plight for their own selfish aggrandizement.

Wars must cease or civilization and even the human race itself may become extinct. If the world would only realize what might be accomplished for all living things by the use of only a fraction of the costs of war to peacetime pursuits and growth, it would seem that mass human integrity would drive war from this earth forever.

It is only through fearless approach to philosophy and laboratory experimentation (using the whole world as our laboratory) that we can evolve under the dictum of Michael Faraday’s “There is nothing too wonderful to be true”, or Charles Stimmetz “If scientifically trained minds free from bias and interested only on the discovery of truth would apply their art in the development of knowledge of the extra sensory fields, the accomplishments and progress would be many times as great as have ever been realized in the physical and biological sciences.”

I have delayed writing this letter to you for I have been having more painful symptoms in the region of the gall bladder during the past two or three weeks and if it is my fate to have a gall bladder operation I didn’t know but your “reading” might be more helpful to me after the operation than before. The symptoms have now subsided somewhat and so I am sending in my application for a “reading” at your convenience.

My faith that whatever happens to me will be for my ultimate good is so firm that I can await the course of events with perfect confidence. My guardian angel has never failed me yet during my 65 years of interesting life in this incarnation, and whether on this planet or elsewhere my life shall lead is of no real importance. I know that I shall go on evolving and gaining in wisdom.

I should at this time like to testify that I am certain that several of those who were formerly very dear to me in my earlier years, individuals who have now passed to the extra planetary realms are watching, guarding and directing me through each passing day, and I am exceedingly grateful to them. They know my appreciation without any testimonial but I like to make it anyway, especially since there still exists such a great majority of humanity that does not understand evolution in its fullest sense.

I have just secured a copy of Paul Brunton’s new book which is just off the press and am reading it with double interest since reading “There is a River”. I was with Paul Brunton at the Ashram of Sri Ramona Maharshi in Tiruvannemala, and he invited me to go with him into Tibet but I found it necessary to decline the invitation. Paul is a very courageous and a very sincere student and writer and his new book “The Wisdom of the Overself” explains his deepest convictions.

I am very glad that the Association for Research and Enlightenment is in existence. I should be happy to send them some of the spirit photographs taken of me at the home of Mrs. Buxton in Crewe, England by Wm. Hope, the spirit photographer, if they would be helpful in their work. I made two trips to Crewe to see Mr. Hope and my appreciation and love for that little man is unbounded.

Pardon this long letter. You see I have a kindly human interest in you for I fully know and appreciate your honestly just as truly and thoroughly as I understand the truth of my own personal experiences which have been many, and so, fully realizing the scientific need for sifting the wheat from the chaff in the study of extra sensory phenomena, it is nice to add another friend in whom I can repose absolute confidence and can accept your findings with complete and perfect assurance of your integrity and sincerity.

At last I have received the enclosed history from the printers and I am also enclosing a complete set of the photographs mentioned in the history.

It is better that these pictures should not be shown indiscriminately but rather exhibited only to such individuals as you feel have a proper understanding of these superphysical matters. There is no sense in “casting pearls before swine” nor in revealing the deeper spiritual truths to those who are not advanced to the point of appreciating them. Of course, I am not trying to dictate and you can use them anywhere that your judgment seems to justify.

I intended to write to you many days ago but I was awaiting these histories from the press and I have been very busy with other matters also - even though I have retired from practice.

I have entered the time for your reading in my case in my appointment book for Feb. 2, 1944 - (7.30 to 8.30 A.M. Pacific War Time) and I will advise you in advance of that just where I shall be at the appointed time.

In the event that someone with an earlier appointment should die or cancel their appointment you may advance me to an earlier date rather than change the appointments of the intervening group, if you so desire. I am happy to have my appointment at any date to suit your convenience.

My gall bladder condition seems to be much better for the present.

It seems to me that the symptoms which I have in the mouth, throat and chest originate in the intestines, gall bladder, liver and pancreas. I also have a weak back which I have had since early childhood which causes me to be round-shouldered. My grandfather was very round shouldered and I suppose I inherit something of this tendency from him.

Therefore, when my reading is given, two of the points upon which I should like information are 1) what diet and other strengthening procedures should I use to improve my weak back, and should I use a back brace to assist in holding my body in proper posture? and 2) what is the mouth, throat, chest and alimentary condition due to, and what should I do to correct my condition? These questions may be filed with my application for a reading to be considered at the proper time.

I received my copy of “A Search for God” and I appreciate it very deeply. I hope that your group is enjoying the copy of “Self Unfoldment” by Manly Hall which I sent to you.

I am benefiting greatly from my reading of two of Paul Brunton’s books - 1) “The Wisdom of the Overself” and 2) “Beyond Yoga”. I was with Paul Brunton at the Ashram of Sri Ramona Maharshi in Tiruannimalai and at the Ashram of Sri Aurabindo in Pondicherry, both in India, and therefore, I have a double interest in his books.

My dear Edgar:

I am enclosing my check for the sum of $5.00 and I think that I can arrange my affairs to send a like amount monthly for the present.

I went though an operation for the removal of my left hand in April 1942, and the loss of my hand forced me to retire from practice with the consequent loss of professional income. The pathology present in my case was cancer of the little finger and marked vascular changes in the whole hand from late effects from my use of the X-ray between the year 1900 and 1906. I never had the slightest X-ray burn of the hand but changes were started at that time that manifested years later.

I have already pledged myself to support many projects such as the War Chest, the church, the Y.M.C.A. Red Cross, Salvation Army, U.S.O. Research Program of the College of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons, Loyalty Fund of the University of Vermont (my Alma Mater), the Kiwanis Club Youth Delinquency Program, Save-a-Child Foundation, Crippled Children, Student Loan Fund, Boy’s Town, Masonic Old Folks Home, Masonic Orphans Home and several other organizations and individuals, so it is my privilege to meet those pledges before taking on additional ones.

I am deeply interested in your work, but I must sound a mild note of caution in your case. You must refrain from trying to do more than you can do constructively. It is going to be impossible for you to serve all of those whom you wish to serve, and it is better to recognize this fact early rather than too late.

I found in my practice that it was impossible for me to intelligently care for all of the patients who wished to come to me, even working 14 to 16 hours per day. And your work is so exacting that it will be very easy for you to overdo

• especially if you have economic as well as pathological problems to disturb you and claim your attention.

In my case, the only way I could stand the pressure was to take vacations of three or four months each year in Europe or in the mountains, and then work very hard and very continuously for the remainder of the year when I returned.

I think you will find it necessary to take these periods of complete separation from your labors if you are going to live to render your maximum service in your unique field. I know how anxious you are to do all that you can during your earthly life and I appreciate the fact that it is difficult for you to refuse anyone when the need is so great, but conversely, your work would cease entirely if you became ill or died, and so it is much better to organize your life and your work with all factors fully recognized.

I have just finished a book by Paul Brunton entitled “The Wisdom of the Overself” which I have found very helpful, and if you haven’t a copy in your library I shall be happy to get one and send it to you. Paul and I were together for a time both in Pondicherry in French India, at the Ashram of Sri Aurobindo and also in Southern India at the Ashram of Sri Ramana Maharshi in Tiriwannamalai, so that I had an added interest in this latest book of his. I appreciate it under the circumstances, what you are contributing to our work. If we can in any way, be the means of a help, be sure to let us know. I know you are exactly right. There are many more hundreds of requests than I can possibly attempt. I hope I will never attempt to do more than may be done well, and I trust that we will always be able to give the maximum amount of help in every case. To be sure there are many hundreds of cases that there is little or no material help to be had, but can we in some cases, offer some spiritual advise, may it be forthcoming in the right place and at the right time, and in the right way. I realize that if the “blind lead the blind”, they will both fall in the ditch.

I have to every once in a while, get entirely away as it were going to the mountain to pray, as well as having the prayers of many, many hundreds of people everywhere. This, I know is the only hope, for I am very, very human, and while I have withstood criticism for a good many years, whether I can be able to stand popularity or not, I wonder. I know many people through the Good Book were able to do this. I hope I may be.

Yes, a great many people write me about various books. I wish it were possible for me to read them. This I have not found very practical in my own personal experience. I do very little reading, except in one Book - that is the Book of Books. That I do read consistently. I just hope I don’t become so narrow nor so broad that I miss the real purpose of the manifestation as has been possible through the years.

I cannot begin to express my appreciation for the generous manner in which you have given of your time and effort throughout the last fifty years or more to mankind with little or no thought of personal gain for yourself and only a great and honest interest in, and desire to help others. Of course, I am not so stupid that I do not realize that if you had used your gift to exploit or deceive others your powers would have been lost instantly, but the point is that you have never had a thought of employing them unfairly or unjustly. That is why you gain in strength and power with each passing day - but you find just as George Washington Carver did, that you must go to the woods, to the fields and to the mountains from which cometh strength, to renew your inspiration and power, and to reconsecrate your life to God’s purpose.

I wish to thank you for your nice letter of the 29th ult. but I realize the tax you are under so do not add to the strain by writing to me unless you feel impelled to write to someone who truly understands the fundamentals of at least some of your life’s work - and your aspirations.

Dear Dr. [3650]:

Let me express my appreciation and thanks for yours of the 18th. It is so unusual for us to get a letter from those in the profession of healing like yourself, that it is rather a unique thing with us. To be sure, we have a great number of friends throughout the country, some in most all schools, but it is so seldom we hear from them. We hear from them through individuals more than we hear from them directly.

We, here, are trying to get together a lending library. We of course, as yet have had very little means to purchase books. There has been some contributions by a number of friends and one or two groups of people or individuals have sent in a a number of books. May we use your suggestions here in supplying some of the books that would possibly be of the greater interest to the people. A few of these of course we have, like “Man, The Unknown”, “Wisdom of the Overself”. The others I don’t believe we have, and if from time to time, you would supply us with other lists that you have found or consider to be good, I would be very glad and appreciate it very much. If we ever have any material that we might send you that would possibly be of interest, I hope you will just let us know.

I trust that you are on our regular mailing list and that you will receive the bulletin and the research papers that are mailed from time to time.

My dear Edgar:

I am enclosing herewith a list of some of the matters that come to my mind at this time which might be touched upon in the “reading” in my case on February 2nd.

If you wish to have me enter into the histories of any of the subjects mentioned I shall be happy to do so. I am only concerned in keeping in the best physical condition that I can so as to be able to be of service to others as long as I live. I suppose we all wish to avoid any prolonged illness which will make us a burden to others.

My father remained in quite good health until he was nearly ninety two and my father’s mother died at ninety five so I have a fair expectation in longevity, especially as my mother’s side of the family had nearly as good a record for long life as did my father’s.
