This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 21st day of February, 1944, in accordance with request made by the self - Mr. [3674], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by the book, THERE IS A RIVER.

GC: You will give the relations of this entity and the universe, and the universal forces; giving the conditions which are as personalities, latent and exhibited in the present life; also the former appearances in the earth plane, giving time, place and the name, and that in each life which built or retarded the development for the entity; giving the abilities of the present entity, that to which it may attain, and how. You will answer the questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes - we are given the records here of that entity now known as or called [3674].
-
In giving the interpretations of the records as we find them, these we choose with the desire that this information may be a helpful experience for the entity; enabling the entity to better fulfill the purposes for which it entered this present sojourn.
-
We would magnify the virtues, we would minimize the faults - but faults there are, virtues there are. For there is so much good in the worst, it doesn’t behoove any of us to speak unkindly of the worst of us. For he is indeed blessed whom the Lord hath given consciousness in this present period of changes in thought in the world.
-
Then it is only that each individual would be warned, would be given that which may enable him as an individual, as an entity, to carry on to the glory of God and to the honor of self.
-
Then who is to be the judge? Only self may answer that within self. For as has been summarized by the lawgiver, “Say not, Who will descend from heaven to bring me a message that I may know, or who would come from over the seas. For Lo, it is within thee. Today, now, there is set before thee good and evil, life and death. Choose thou.”
-
As to the urges latent and exhibited - we find these as the combination of those efforts, those urges arising from a composite of the earthly or material experiences and the application in other dimensions, or through the periods of transition in the earth.
-
Thus we find an entity pleasing in personality, troubled in individuality. One tempered in the lack of patience, overemotinal in those things pertaining to likes and dislikes, and yet with abilities to lead, to direct others; not merely by a set form but in principle. But the practise must first be in self.
-
The astrological aspects are not as ordinarily termed, for here we find tendencies but many of these have been and are being changed in the entity’s experience.
-
In Mercury and in Venus, that is adverse to Jupiter, in Uranus and in Saturn we find the greater influences from the latent forces, or in expression in the dreams and in the thoughts of the entity.
-
We find in Mercury the high mental abilities, in Venus the music, the expression in voice.
-
The adverse influence from Jupiter is expressed in not looking far enough ahead at times, forgetting the experiences - even in self - for the moment.
-
In Uranus we find the extremes, and the entity becomes very, very much given to being an extremist.
-
We find in Saturn the sudden changes in the experiences, in the materialization of activities.
-
According to abilities the entity should have been a minister, a singer, or an exhortationist in any of those things wherein there is the use of the voice, the use of the personality to sway, change, direct, help, aid the fellow man.
-
These are the channels through which the entity may find the greater outlet for its abilities in the present.
-
But learn first to apply self. Ask not of others that ye do not do thyself.
-
As to the appearances in the earth and the influence these have in the present experiences of the entity:
-
Before this the entity was among those in what is now called Indiana who journeyed towards the west in the search for gold; Colorado, then California.
-
These, then, have a particular call to the entity; things pertaining to either of these States and in these directions call to the entity, yet the abilities may find a greater outlet at this period of activity in the eastern seaboard area, or in New England or in such as New Orleans.
-
In those expressions the entity became as the leader for the various groups as they united in their efforts for the common hardships of the groups.
-
The name then was Carlton Carruth, and ye will find something of the happenings still recorded in some of those places in California.
-
Before that the entity was in the English land during the period of the Second Crusade. There the entity was a zealous individual for causes and purposes.
-
Thus we find that overanxiety which comes at times for causes or purposes, or the extremes to which the entity will find itself going in its analyzing of itself.
-
Those were periods of anxiety for many, yet again the entity proved itself worthy in leadership.
-
Thus as expressed in that indicated, the entity’s abilities should be used as a leader in song, a leader in that direction as a minister or teacher, as a director of groups, organizations, or those activities pertaining to communications, radio, or where messages are to be delivered to individual groups, or where there is the need for spreading propaganda.
-
It would be well for the entity, from that experience, to seek activities, governmental activities in South Africa for the reclamations.
-
The name then was Carlesteun.
-
Before that the entity was in the Persian and Arabian land, when there were those activities in the ‘city in the hills and plains.’
-
The entity was among the merchants who passed that way, as one in active service between the city of gold (in what is now French China, or Indo-China) and the Egyptian land.
-
Changes came to the entity with the activities as a result of stopping in the ‘city in the hills and the plains’. For the entity then carried those messages to the peoples of Egypt and to the Far East, as to the tenets and truths that became a part of that new regime builded from the teaching in the ‘city in the hills and the plains’.
-
The name then was Pasha-Duen.
-
From that sojourn we find the abilities to meet the needs of groups in various activities, groups in various thoughts and in various schools of activity. These again would be a contributing factor to the entity in governmental representation, if chosen in those directions.
-
Before that the entity was in the Egyptian land, when there were those turmoils and when those activities came about in which emissaries were sent to various lands by the King, by the sanction of the Priest.
-
The entity then was among those prepared first in the Temple of Sacrifice, again in the Temple Beautiful, for an emissary to the land of Saad and to the Gobi land.
-
Thus things pertaining to the orient find lodgment in the mind and in the purpose of the entity.
-
As to the abilities of the entity in the present, that to which it may attain, and how:
-
First, find self. Know thine own ideal. Know that you have just begun to live. While there is a past, put it behind thee. Begin where you are today. There, and in that direction, use thy life, thy purpose, thy will - if it will be dedicated to God and to thy fellow man.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Through what channels shall I find my life work? (A) As just indicated. It may be through the ministry, if there is the choosing by the entity. As a singer, as a radio action or counsel, or better still through the government activity in Africa for the rebuilding of same - as an agent in those fields of service.
-
(Q) Whom should I contact to get into such work? (A) Especially Lehman, who has charge of those fields.
-
(Q) What have been my past associations with these two individuals, and which of these (if either) would be the proper life companion in the present: […] [his present wife], Miss [5002] [the other girl]… (A) (Interrupting) As indicated, forget the past. Forget - forgive, and begin where you are. Look not back - remember Lot’s wife.
-
We are through.

Dear Mrs. […]
We have your letter of September 11, and will be glad to attempt a life reading for you in place of a reading for your husband, if Mr. Cayce’s health permits.
As you may judge from the enclosed Notice to members, he is not at all well, and our chief concern at the moment is to see him soon restored to good health.
Please add your prayers to ours that he may soon resume the work which he loves.
Hoping that we may be of service,
Sincerely, Grace Premo, Sec’y gp

PPS: If we are not able to attempt the reading on this date, do you still wish an appointment, in view of the fact that our calendar is now filled until early 1946? Please let us know.

Dear Mr. Cayce:
A recent letter from your secretary brought regrettable word of your illness. I’m so very sorry you have not been able to continue as usual with your work as your wish - and sincerely hope your are gaining strength and health with each passing day.
Just in case you are able to give my reading on Saturday, September 23rd as scheduled please include the following questions:
1 - What is the reason for my present mental difficulty - and how can it be remedied.
2 - My husband wishes a divorce so that he will be free to marry another woman [5002]. I’ve asked him to wait until the war is over before taking final steps - is this wise? (We have two children.)
3 - My husband claims his affection for me is brought about because of a mother complex - that he doesn’t love me as a husband should love a wife. Surely there must be some way to unite the two. What do you advise?
Thanking you - and above all else praying for your recovery, I ask to be
Sincerely yours - Mrs. […]
R6. 9/12/45 [3674]‘s letter to GD:
Dear Miss Davis…
Having just returned from overseas, I have only now learned the sad news of the passing of Mr. Cayce. It is indeed a great shock to me, and I’m sure his going is an inestimable loss to mankind. But, who knows…perhaps there was a “purpose” in it even though we may not be able to see it.
As for the twenty dollars I paid you that very windy and rainy day almost exactly a year ago…I have checked three of the publications on the enclosed blank. Please deduct for them and send me the balance.
The three publications were: MONTHLY BULLETIN, WEEKLY READING EXTRACTS, AURAS (the essay on the meaning of color).
Has anyone been found to carry on Mr. Cayce’s work of giving readings…even in some small measure? Once when I was visiting him he mentioned that there was a possibility of a lady [[3514]?] from Detroit (I believe) developing an ability to give certain types of readings. What came of it?
My kindest regards to you, and sincere wishes for the success of the Association along whatever line it may proceed.
Sincerely yours, [3674]
R7. 9/20/45 GD’s letter to [3674]:
Dear Mr. [3674]
Enclosed you will find check for
12.15, covering refund due from your20.00 membership after deducting $7.85 for the pamphlet Auras and a year’s subscription each to the WEEKLY READINGS EXTRACTS and the MONTHLY BULLETIN.I am also sending to you under separate cover our 1945-46 Program in which I feel you will be interested.
As you will see from the explanatory data being sent you, The EDGAR CAYCE Publishing Company, Incorporated, is doing all our publishing and handling all subscriptions. I have turned over your subscriptions to them. The Association now can devote much more time to the membership program and the handling of our research program.
No, we have not found anyone to take Mr. Cayce’s place and probably never will, since no one can ever take another’s place. However, we feel sure that in due time other psychic individuals will appear who will be able to help in the various channels which will be kept open through the Association’s existence. Mr. Cayce’s readings always said that our job was to lay the foundation and not worry about future psychics. Evidently the time is not yet - we are not fully prepared. We must do something with the material we have on hand before more can be given to us. I trust that you will be able to join in our membership program and to take part in some phase of the work. I am writing a Diary-Letter occasionally to acquaint our members with what is going on - with all the little things that cannot be told in our printed Bulletin limited as to space. This is only sent to those who request it, however, as it is of a very personal nature. After reading the samples I am sending, if you’d care to have me put your name on the list please let me know. Our friends and members Bill and Elsie Secrest [Sechrist] are now in California and are planning to start an Ass’n group. If interested, you may drop them a note: Mr. & Mrs. Wilfred Secrest, % Mr. Louis Rosso, 4703 Mary Ellen St., Van Nuys, Calif.
Kindest regards and best wishes.
Sincerely, GD

P. O. Box 595 Virginia Beach, Virginia July 8, 1960
Dear [3674]:
A small group of A.R.E. members have started work on the task of researching all of the Edgar Cayce readings which mentioned incarnations during the early America period. Your reading is one of these, and this letter is a request for your help on this project.
The main object of our research now is to find any documentary or substantiating evidence of what the Edgar Cayce readings said. For instance, if a reading said that a person had been John Brown living in Mainville, New York, at the time of the Revolutionary War, this project will try to find some black-and-white evidence (court records, town records, genealogy books, etc.) that there WAS a man named John Brown who DID live in Mainville, New York, and it WAS during the Revolutionary period, or whatever else might prove to be evidential.
Obviously, the task of tracking down the hundreds of references involved is a mammoth one and we very much need any help you can give us. Specifically, have you ever done any research on your own former incarnation as Carlton Carruth? or do you know of anyone else who has? Any information you can send us along this line may save us hours and hours of unnecessary work. Even “negative research” (i.e., trying to find something apparently unsuccessfully) may help us in that we won’t bother looking in that place. Just write us WHERE you searched - name of town, cemetery, library, court office, book or whatever - and WHAT you found out.
You may be reassured to know that the Foundation Staff is going to great lengths to protect your present identity at all times. Any references to your Edgar Cayce reading will be handled by the Case Number which has been assigned to you
- [#3674]. All correspondence with you will be held strictly confidential, and any information you give this research project via this office will in no way reveal your present name or address.
Please write to us soon, giving us any information or any suggestions you may have for carrying on this work.
Thank you, sincerely, [signed] Gladys Davis Turner, Secretary, E.C.F.

Gladys Davis Turner Edgar Cayce Foundation P.O. Box 595 Virginia Beach, Virginia Re: Case # [3674]
Dear Mrs. Turner:
In reply to your query relative to research on my former incarnation as Carlton Carruth, I did some searching in 1946 as well as keeping alert since then for any clues that might lead to further information. However, I have had little success in finding specific data. As memory serves me, here is the information.
In the Los Angeles Public Library I checked the only book on genealogy in which was mentioned the name Carruth, or as it is also spelled, Caruth. This book traced the family from England to the East Coast, around Boston I believe. Then part of the family moved westward, to an inexact area, but generally in the section now known as Indiana. Here various brothers scattered, some possibly farther West, but nothing specific. Further, in the same library, I studied the microfilmed voting registration records of the areas of California involved in the Gold Rush. (This was indicated in the reading.) This search proved fruitless for two reasons; first, it would take more time than I had at my disposal to cover all the counties involved because, second, the lack of an exact area named in the reading made the project immense. You see, there were more counties in existence in those days than today.
Next, I took my vacation one summer in the Gold Rush country, hoping to find some mention of the name Carruth (Caruth) in that area. This involved looking through countless weed-grown cemeteries in tiny communities that are now but a sleepy shadow of the once hectic days of a hundred years ago. No one could give much information as to where the records of so long ago could be found. Nor did there seem to be much interest in helping the “city folks”.
My travels also took me to the library at the state capitol in Sacremento. However, shortness of time and my unfamiliarity with the library resulted in no further information. My two-week vacation period was entirely too short to cover the area involved. I hope ultimately to make the trip to the Gold Rush country with someone sensitive enough to be able to pinpoint the place where information still exists, as was given in the reading.
Unfortunately, time has dimmed my memory of the names of the towns and villages I visited. The project could be likened to using a scatter gun on a target you couldn’t see, but hoped existed somewhere in a large area.
In my opinion there are two possible avenues of research. First, someone in Sacremento who could be able to do a thorough investigation in the historical library on the Gold Rush period and area. Second, someone who had a contact with the organization known as “Daughters of the Golden West”. I understand this group has a large fund of information on early California days.
As to my own experiences during my brief stay in the area, there was one town that seemed vaguely familiar to me. This was a tiny village called HANG TOWN. However, I realize this could have been wishful thinking on my part.
I am sorry I cannot be more helpful to you in this project. My interest in the subject has not abated. In fact, the Cayce Work interests me greatly.

MR. EDGAR CAYCE VIRGINIA BEACH, VIRGINIA
DEAR MR. CAYCE:
YOUR ABILITY TO HELP PEOPLE HAS COME TO MY ATTENTION, HENCE THIS LETTER TO ASK YOUR AID IN A PROBLEM THAT HAS BOTHERED ME FOR YEARS.
UNFORTUNATELY, I AM NOT FAMILIAR WITH SOME OF THE DETAILS…SUCH AS YOUR CHARGE FOR A READING, AND THE INFORMATION ABOUT ME THAT YOU REQUIRE IN ORDER TO GIVE A READING. I TRUST THAT THE FOLLOWING MAY BE COMPLETE ENOUGH AND THAT YOUR CHARGE CAN BE TAKEN CARE OF BY SENDING ME THE READING C.O.D.
MY PROBLEM IS VOCATIONAL. FOR MANY YEARS I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO FIND THE RIGHT LIFE WORK. SINCE A CHILD I HAVE FELT, PERHAPS INSTINCTIVELY, THAT THERE WAS SOME IMPORTANT WORK FOR ME TO DO…SOMETHING OF MORE THAN PASSING BENEFIT TO SOCIETY…MORE THAN JUST PROVIDING SUSTENANCE FOR ME AND MY FAMILY. WHAT THAT WORK IS I DON’T KNOW. OVER A PERIOD OF SIXTEEN YEARS I HAVE TRIED VARIOUS TYPES OF WORK WITHOUT FINDING THE HAPPINESS THAT WOULD COME FROM DOING THE RIGHT THING…THE SATISFACTION OF ACCOMPLISHMENT. AFTER STAYING WITH ONE LINE OF WORK FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS I HAVE NOW REACHED THE POINT WHERE I MUST CHANGE AGAIN, SO HEARING OF THE GREAT HELP YOU HAVE GIVEN OTHERS HAS COME AT A MOST OPPORTUNE TIME.
NOT KNOWING WHAT INFORMATION YOU REQUIRE, IF ANY, I’LL MERELY SAY THAT MY BIRTH DATE IS JANUARY 7, 1911.
THANK YOU FOR GIVING THIS YOUR KIND CONSIDERATION.
SINCERELY, [3674]
B2. 10/24/43 Wife’s letter:
…, Calif.
Mr. Edgar Cayce Virginia Beach, Virginia
Dear Mr. Cayce
An hour ago I finished reading the amazing and wonderful story of your life - i.e. “There is a River.”
It has come to me at a time when I need it so VERY much - for I don’t know which way to turn. I’ve come to the crossroads
- so to speak - and what I do now will determine my entire future life - on this planet, at least.
My name is […] - on Nov. 5th I will have been married 5 years, and I have two children, […] - 4 years Nov 12th and […] - 1 year Sept. 23rd last. My husband is [3674] - who is at present in …, Wash - … Street.
I could go into great detail as to why he’s there and I’m here - suffice it to say, he’s found some one [5002] for whom he is eager to terminate all relationships between him and myself - he wants a divorce and I want to be fair. If his happiness depends upon this girl - then even the children couldn’t benefit should he remain with us - because his heart would be with her - we’d all be miserable.
This is [3674]‘s second marriage, my first. I am a Catholic, so we are married out of the church since the church would not grant a dispensation. I’ve always contended that failure in a marriage was the fault of the woman - hence I am ready and willing to do anything I possibly can to work out our difficulties and build a happy life for us and our children. Frankly, I don’t know what to do since [3674] seems dreadfully confused within himself. I don’t think he knows what he wants - which includes even his life’s work.
I would like a life reading for each of us - I’m sure there must be some way to solve this - and I KNOW you could tell me the real difficulty.
[3674] was born in Preston, Idaho - January 7th, 1911 - christened [3674].
Should any further information be necessary please let me know - as well as your fee - and as soon as it is convenient will you please give the reading - the next few weeks may mean a decision - I feel I haven’t too long - PLEASE help me!
I reverence the great work you have done and are doing, and admire so profoundly the principles you’ve followed. Finding you presents a wonderful ray of hope I’ve eagerly sought, and feel you’re really an answer to my prayers.
Thanking you for the great kindness which is you - and God for directing my stumbling feet in your direction, I ask to be
Sincerely and humbly yours, […]
B3. 10/29/43 [3674]‘s letter:
Mr. Edgar Cayce Virginia Beach, Virginia Dear Mr. Cayce:
Thank you for your letter of September 30 and for the booklets which arrived a few days later. Needless to say, I was disappointed that a reading could not be given as soon as I had hoped. However, I should like very much to be put on the waiting list for a Life Reading at some future date, whenever that may be. Enclosed is an application for Associated Membership in the Association. I have a feeling that a Life Reading can make a very great change in my life…one that is necessary before I can get on the right path in this life. Also would like to have my name added to the waiting list for a Physical Reading too. For four years Hay Fever has at times made life so miserable it hardly seemed worthwhile. Doctors have been able to do nothing but alleviate the symptoms slightly, with no promise of a cure.
Enclosed is a money order for
21. The20 for the Associate Membership and the $1 for booklets. I should like the following: “Oneness of All Force” “Child Training” “The Power Within” “Meditation”On the application for Associate Membership you will note I have listed two names. Shortly after birth I was christened [3674]. This name I used until about the age of 18, although it didn’t seem to fit me and I never liked it. About this time I was nicknamed [3674] and liked it so much better than my own name that I adopted it and later had it made legal. So now my name keeps only the initial … of the old name.
Having been very interested in the mind and its phenomena for some years, I have had a few experiences along that line. However, so far the books I have found failed to show me how to develop the faculty of using the mind and spirit to their fullest capabilities. Incidentally, when I opened the book “There is a River” and saw your picture on the frontispiece, my first thought was…”Why I’ve MET that man!” Actually, of course, I haven’t…but that picture awakened a memory way back in my mind. A memory of a tall man, evidently a teacher, for he was speaking to a group of people from a raised platform. Even now I can see his lips moving as he spoke, for he had a softness of speech that was one of his prominent characteristics. Of course, this may all be a mental illusion, but thought I’d mention it in passing.
With best wishes and thanks for your courtesies, I remain
Sincerely, [3674]
