GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also the treatment for the cure and relief of this body. You will answer the questions which I will ask you regarding same.
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here. Now, we find there are those specific conditions that cause distress to the body. While these conditions are of the nature that produce certain disturbing elements, those conditions disturbed, or the disturbances, are at times mistaken for that condition that is the trouble. Hence we find a complication arising from many things as would be or have been applied for correction of conditions. These conditions have to do (these disturbing conditions, or the specifics): The disturbing conditions have to do with much of the VITALITY of the body. The condition specifically has to do with the functioning of an organ, or organs, in the disturbing. These, then, are conditions as we find them with the physical forces of the body:
-
The body, first we find, has led a very active, a very high mental and physical activity of the body; mentally and physically many conditions have been strains on the body. Being, then, of a sympathetic - of a high nerve tension, and many of the conditions bringing the body under the stress - we find those conditions of the assimilation were those first disturbed, and the resultant condition has been lacerations - and a form of ulceration - in the duodenal or lower end of the stomach. These, as we find, disturbed the whole hepatic circulation, producing an over acidity in the system, disturbing the hepatics - especially through the functioning of the pancreas, the liver, the kidneys. These in their turn have had their resultant condition, and have had administered various conditions for the correction for the body - as has been indicated, too, in the operation. This, while successful in a manner, was not for the specific. Rather for the effect than the affectation, and hence we find these conditions existent in the body: First:
-
IN THE BLOOD SUPPLY, this lacking in its elements of proper resuscitation by the proper vibration in same, divisible in the various elements or constituents that add to the building up of depleted forces in the system, and the EFFECT of same is seen in various forms.
-
IN THE NERVE SYSTEM, naturally, under the stress and strain - and the high sensitive nature - the effect of same, especially on the sympathetic and sensory system, has been great. While the body mentally and physically may be termed one with an IRON NERVE, yet this - as we see - is more in reality the WILL, and the body forced to do that as will respond to same.
-
IN THE FUNCTIONING OF THE ORGANS, all of these we find under stress from the conditions which have existed, naturally, from this disturbance in the system.
-
To meet the needs then of these conditions in the present state (for, as the EXISTENT condition - so must the conditions be met); first, great care should be taken as to the diet - to the correct amount and character of physical exercise - and to the vibrations as are created in system - and the impulses from the various nerve centers that are naturally disturbed through the condition which has been described to meet these. Then for the diet: First, beware of meats of any character, and vegetables of tuberous nature or those that grow under the ground. Then what we have left? Fruit, nuts and the like - these should constitute the greater part of the diet. The protein should be prepared principally from that of the vegetable nature, see? (for this is necessary in the system). Drink the water that carries THESE properties, in alternation, so that these do not become obnoxious to the body in the various changes that must necessarily come about as we find the body changing through the application of these elements as given in diet, vibration, or in impulse: Yellow Saffron tea; elm water; small quantities of lithia water. These alternated or changed. Not that regular pure water would not be taken, but the principal portion of the water should carry elm, Yellow Saffron, and lithia - see?
-
For the vibrations, use the Double X Radium Appliance (manufactured by the Radium Appliance Co., Bradbury Bldg., Los Angeles, California). Wear this across the solar plexus center, and re-charge a few minutes each day.
-
Manipulations osteopathically given. Should have about thirty-six to forty-six such treatments, and ADJUSTMENTS made about once every week, with the GENERAL treatment the other periods - or three treatments each week, including the adjustments. These for the incentives or the changes as will occur in the nerve system as retraction sets up.
-
Now we have these: First, consider the diet, see, as outlined. The water as has been given. The vibrations in Radium Appliance for the change in blood and nerve system; and the reaction in the body as should be taken care of through the manipulations and adjustments, especially along the cerebro-spinal system. The exercises should be of a NOMINAL nature - mentally and physically - and considerable of same should be taken outside.
-
Do that. We will find - with the careful, consistent and persistent usage of these, as outlined, and with the necessary changes that would occur for the common application of these given - near nominal conditions being brought about for this body; for it is good in many - many - respects. Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Is the body physically strong enough to accept the call to a metropolitan work in the north? (A) Not until there has been given sufficient time for the consideration of these conditions which have been outlined. These will be given - would the body request same. Well, then, for a three to six weeks rest for recuperation. We are through for the present.

Bishop [3717] …, N.C.
My dear Sir:-
I enclose, herewith, a copy of the reading which was gotten this morning. I sincerely trust you will find in the application of the suggestions made that help which you seek. From the experience of others, I’m constrained to believe you will. I’m sending you some data concerning our work, and from same you will see just how others have found this applicable in their lives; and it is the good that has come to so many from the application of the information that has induced us to establish the institution that is being builded here at the present time. I only wish we were in shape that you might come here at this time and have those things applied which have been suggested. If this could be, I’m sure in a few weeks you would be feeling quite a different man. I’m hoping, though, that you will carry out these suggestions and receive the benefits from same. Should there be any question that you would desire to ask, or if I can be of help in any way in helping you get this, don’t hesitate to call on me. I only hope to be of service.
Please let us hear from you, and make it a point to get in and see us as soon as you can. With kindest personal regards, I am
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce [EC:GD]
R2. 7/31/28 [3717]‘s letter to EC:
Dear Mr. Cayce
The report of the reading together with your kind letter has been received. I am indeed deeply grateful to you for the interest and help you have given my case, and I am determined to set myself to the correction of the conditions which the reading reveals. I shall begin at once to use the waters recommended. I shall try to have my cook give me the kind of foods suggested though the list seems very limited. Have you any printed list of foods? And is milk to be used generously? I shall send for a Double X Radium and shall use it as you direct. I fear there is no osteopath here who would know what treatments to give me, but when I return to …, as I have decided to do on October 6th, I could obtain competent osteopathic attention there. Should I take much or little physical exercise? How often a week should I play golf if at all? Shall I take my setting up exercises at morning and night? It would be difficult for me to go to Virginia Beach at present but if it is imperative I might be able to run up there for a day early next week. But some friends are coming to spend August with me therefore unless it is imperative I should much prefer postponing my going until September. I could spend the last two weeks of September at Virginia Beach if necessary for treatment. The stomach specialist here three months ago advised me to take an enema of two quarts of warm water with a tablespoonful each of salt and soda, and after expelling to take another enema of one pint of warm water with a tablespoon of argerol (15%) holding it as long as possible before expelling. I have been doing this twice a week. Should I continue it?
I am enclosing my application for membership together with my cheque for $20.00 membership fee. I shall greatly appreciate your kind and continued help and direction.
I should say that I am working very lightly and very little and will so continue until I leave here about Sept. 10th, resting completely until Oct 6th when I take up my … work.
Yours sincerely and gratefully, [3717]
R3. 8/13/28 EC’s letter to [3717]:
Bishop [3717] …, N.C.
Dear Bishop [3717]:-
I have yours of the 31st. I regret the delay, but I haven’t been feeling well myself. Possibly you saw Mr. Kahn just after he was here to the meeting. Am feeling a little better now and trust I may be able to continue my efforts in trying to serve in the way that the Spirit sees fit to use me. Certainly glad to know that you found the information, or recommendations, in keeping with the condition.
No, we have no printed list of foods of any kind. I’m sure milk, if it agrees with you, is to be used generously. Possibly alternated in some modified forms from time to time. Before you start in with the osteopath, if you are not able to get the treatments there, I believe it will be well for you to have a check-up on the condition at that time, for there may be many changes before then. There is a lady osteopath in …, however, whom I believe is somewhat in sympathy with our work, if you would care to go to one - Dr. Elizabeth E. Smith. I only wish our place was in shape for you to come here at this time, or even the latter part of September, but we will not have it completed by then and it would be mighty hard for you to get the treatments here. While our physician is on the ground, and I’m in hopes you will take the time in September to at least come and spend a while at Virginia Beach, if its only a few days - I believe you will find it a restful place and an enjoyable place. Like for you to talk with our doctor. He’s a regular fellow, regular physician, but has had a great deal of experience with the work for himself and for members of his own family. Hence his interest in seeking to carry out the information exactly as given in readings, for those who desire it. That’s why we were able to get him associated with the hospital. Work is going along nicely on it and I want you to see it. We have some very good friends in … You will be closer to us possibly than you are at … At least I know you will when the Pennsylvania completes her development in this vicinity, for we will then only be seven hours from New York, coming directly to the Beach. So you will make your arrangements to stop in and see us the latter part of September anyway, won’t you?
As for those suggestions given by your specialist, until you are able to get the suggestions in their entirety as given in reading, I don’t think it would be well to leave off all of these - I would continue to use those enemas as they are needed. I understand that these readings give that necessary for the condition in its entirety at the time. Where one is not able, or not so situated so they can get the whole treatment, then of course can’t expect all the results. Hence the necessity of the institution. I hope you have gotten the Radium pad. This I feel sure you will find helpful. It may irritate you for the first day or so, but I’m sure it will bring help.
Please let us hear from you from time to time, won’t you? Kindest personal regards.
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce [EC:GD]
R4. 8/18/28 [3717]‘s letter to EC:
Dear Mr. Cayce
Thanks for your kind letter. I am sorry that you have not been feeling up to the mark, I fear you have been giving too much of yourself to others, it is an easy fault to fall into, but a wonderful one too.
I am looking forward to coming to Virginia Beach probably about Sept. 17th for a few days and I can then check up on my condition. I have been taking the osteopathic treatments by a Dr. Rockwell here but I could transfer to Dr. E. E. Smith if you think best. I have been unable as yet to get the radium pad. No one seems to know anything about it here. Could you have your secretary order one for me sent to me here? On receipt of the bill I would send cheque for it. I am sorry to trouble you with so much detail. Again thank you and I shall look forward to seeing you after Sept. 16th.
Yours very sincerely, [3717]
R5. 8/29/28 EC’s letter to [3717]:
Bishop [3717] …, N.C.
Dear Bishop [3717]:-
Yours of the 18th received. I should have answered sooner, but have been so very busy with visitors. Several of our old friends have been in to see us in the last two weeks. They’ve heard about the work we are doing, about the building, and they have made it a point to put our place on their list and drop by to see if the work was actually going on. This, with other duties of course, has kept us rather busy. Glad to say though that I’m feeling a whole lot better. I am in hopes you are feeling better. If your osteopath has been following the suggestions given in your reading, I wouldn’t change. I merely suggested Dr. Smith as I knew that she was SOMEWHAT acquainted with the work, as I met her in person. Of course Dr. Rockwell may be a great deal better, even. Of course I don’t know, but at least one in SYMPATHY with what we are trying to do usually will follow the suggestions more closely.
Now regarding the Radium Pad, we gave you the address I think - which is: Radium Appliance Co., Bradbury Bldg., Los Angeles, California. However, on receipt of your letter, my secretary - Miss Davis - wrote the company to send you a pad direct. I hope they did. These, as you know, are sent this way: If you try them out for thirty days and find you are not getting results, you send them back and they will refund your money. We ask them to do this wherever they have been suggested in the readings. So far, we have had mighty few returned where we have suggested them.
We are certainly looking forward to your visit, and we certainly hope you will find it pleasant here and will be feeling a whole lot better. We want to check up on your condition at that time.
Thanking you for your letter, and with kindest personal regards, I am
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce [EC:GD]

Mr. Edgar Cayce Virginia Beach, Va.
My dear Mr. Cayce:
Just a little note, Mr. Cayce, to acknowledge this order for one of the Pads for Bishop [3717]. We sent the Double Strength
30 Pad right off to him COD30. His trial expires September 30, and we feel if he gives the Pad a good, thorough trial it will more than repay him.Mr. Cayce, we had a letter from one of your clients yesterday, Miss [569] telling us that you had suggested that she have her Pad retreated. When we reply to any of your clients, we try to make our letters as brief as possible for we don’t want to infringe upon your work with these people in any way. We simply suggested to Miss [569] that she exchange to one of the splendid Double Strength $30 model.
With kindest personal regards,
Most cordially yours, [signed] John R. Dutcher, Radium Appliance Company [JRD:DJM]
R7. 9/6/28 [3717]‘s letter to EC:
Dear Mr. Cayce,
Thank you for your very kind letter. I am intending to reach Virginia Beach on Monday, Sept. 17th, and am writing the Princess Anne Hotel for rates. I shall only be able to remain two or three days on this trip. The radium belt has arrived and I am wearing. Till the 17th,
Very sincerely, [3717]

B1. 7/21/28 (Saturday) [3717]‘s letter:
Dear Mr. Cayce
The above cut of the church of which I am Rector will recall to you my identity - I have just had a talk with our mutual friend, Mr. Kahn, and on his suggestion I am writing to you.
Would you have time to give me a reading on my physical condition? I do not feel up to the mark, and am convinced that there is some physical cause for it which the doctors have not yet found. Can you help me to find out where and what it is. I wonder if my operation was successful or if there is still some contributing cause that should be corrected.
I particularly need light at this particular time as I have received a call to a metropolitan work in the North which I would like to accept if I am physically strong enough for it. I must give an answer to it within a week.
I fear that I am imposing on your good nature, and have hesitated writing you, but Mr. Kahn urges me to do so. Forgive me if I am imposing, and believe me to be
Yours Very Sincerely, (Bishop) [3717]
