R1. GD’s dream:
Sat. 4:00 A.M., June 2, 1934: Edgar Cayce, Hugh Lynn and I were at the [378]‘s, in the upstairs living room. Mrs. [255] especially was in the room talking with us, and [275]. We were discussing circumstances of a particular reading, etc., as usual. Suddenly Mr. [378] was sitting in the room with us, talking, asking questions, and just as REAL as - more so than - anyone in the room. We seem transported back to the time when this was so, yet our conversation was not exactly as any we had had before. Then it seemed as if he was coming in from work. Edgar Cayce got up and shook hands with him, as if he hadn’t seen him since getting there. He sat down and entered the conversation. I knew Mrs. [255] was afraid to look at Edgar Cayce to find out whether Mr. [378]‘s handclasp was real flesh or not. She sat quietly knitting (or sewing), speaking occasionally in a normal manner. Then she got up to go kiss Mr. [378] as she always did when he came home. She dropped a kiss on his forehead. There was perfect understanding in her eyes, through the tears. She turned to her desk to put up some papers, saying as she did so, “Oh, [378], you have no FEELING,” in a sort of half joking manner, just as if she would say, “Oh, you and your cigarettes.” Then she took him in her arms (it seemed he had had to wait for her to make the first move), sat down in the rocking chair and he in her lap. He was at perfect peace, as if he had come from a long way and had found rest. Happiness shone through Mrs. [255]‘s tears. I wondered, and knew Mrs. [255] was thinking that someone should tell the children outside as they came in to act in a perfectly normal, natural manner, to greet him as usual, not making a fuss or getting too excited over his presence or his lack of a normal body. I knew he was going down to supper and it would be just as always, except that he was without a physical body; he had work a long way off, but he would come “home” to rest and recuperte for it.
Then, from the children’s conversation later, it seemed that he had come to the living room door several times as a little black boy, but Mrs. [255] hadn’t known him. He had been unable to make himself known to her, because he had been afraid she would censure him.
R2. 6/5/34 GD’s letter to Mrs. [255], wife of [378]:
My dear, dear Mrs. [255]:-
I may be all wrong in my great urge to send this dream to you; I’ve waited several days thinking I might feel differently, as Mr. Cayce seemed to feel I shouldn’t send it. It so impressed me that I was wide awake at four o’clock and couldn’t go back to sleep for a long time. I wanted to get a reading on it, but Mr. Cayce didn’t seem to feel it best - I think he was afraid the dream might be true; and yet I have known all along that you’d rather KNOW. Men are so different; sometimes the very thing they think is protecting a woman is the very thing that hurts most.
You see, ever since Mr. [378] went away, I’ve been praying that I would have a vision - in order to help you to UNDERSTAND. This is the first thing that has come, and I don’t know whether it is real or not; yet I do know that it affected me the same as the few other REAL visions I have had.
It is a Marvel to all of us, and especially Mrs. Cayce and me, how strong and self-reliant (rather God-reliant) you have been through this situation which has “hit home” to the very core. Yet, it makes me feel and know what the IDEAL woman should be - “Mighty in battle - serving the Lord.” [Ps. 24:8
- Acts 20:19]
I will be so glad when I can talk with you. There is so much that I FEEL in regard to your problem, and if I were with you I think I could express it in such a way as to help - some. Every night when I go to sleep I pray that I may be a leavening influence through it all. You mean so much to me, and the ideal home which I had long dreamed of I found expressed through you and Mr. [378]. I cannot feel that anything is changed; for an ideal like that could not be crushed by ANY material happening. As someone has said, we are bigger than anything that can happen to us. So, I feel that the Christ Life and the Christ Consciousness is being expressed even through what seems to us to be the darkest hour.
You will continue to be strong and to be guided by Him; for He IS the Way, there is no other.
With love, and hoping to see you before very long, I am - as in the past, present and future,
Your kindred soul, Gladys Davis.
R3. 6/5/34 Mrs. [255]‘s ltr. to EC thanked him for rdg: “It was so calm and sweet. I know all will be well. May more and more appreciation of your work enter people’s hearts.
“Enclosed you will find some more questions [for 255-12]. Gladys will gladly put them in correct rotation, I am sure.”
R4. 6/7/34 EC’s letter to Mrs. [2110]:
We have some friends [the [378] family] that are going through a trial and a test at this time, such as I don’t think I have ever seen or known. They are people who have had practically everything in the way of this world’s goods; a beautiful home and a very, very lovely family - three boys and three girls. The youngest girl is about sixteen. [276] They had financial reverses during the depression, and for some unknown reason the husband and father has just recently disappeared. His last report intimated that he would take his own life. Search has been made high and low. Every means almost has been resorted to, and no word whatever. This uncertainty - I don’t know jut how the people stand it. But they have taken the attitude much as you have; it’s their job, it’s their experience that they must understand the make the most of. Sometimes I feel that every one else’s experiences are my very own, and then again I feel that I have none compared to so many others that I have come to think so much of. All such experiences certainly make me realize that man is indeed very short armed. I feel much as Paul must have felt with the thorn in the flesh, that he could heal many but there were somethings left for a purpose. It’s hard to be understood, but possibly it’s not meant that we should - at least not just now. [2 Cor. 12:7]
