GC: You will have before you the body and enquiring mind of [378], who is in his office at … St., New York City, and the information given him and his associates through these sources on June 4th, 1931, concerning the product of the factory of Louis Dejonge & Co., at Staten Island, N.Y. You will answer the questions he will ask regarding these.

EC: Yes, we have the body, the enquiring mind, [378], and the information that has been given regarding the products in which the body, the mind, is interested.

(Q) What is the best and cheapest formula for coating our standard colored grounds with a size that is non-inflammable, pliable, absolutely waterproof and light-proof? (A) As we find - while, to be sure, there would be the necessity of some experimentation, but - the coating of same may be made in THIS manner: To be sure, the quantity should be sufficient to submerge, or to roll stock THROUGH. This, however, is the quantity - or PROPORTIONS - for tests that might be made:
First we WOULD prepare a solution of hyposulphite of soda. The hydrometer test of same should be eighty. Submerge the stock in this for five to eight minutes. Then thoroughly wash. (This to destroy the chemical effects of pyro or other properties IN the manufacture of paper - see?) Then submerge same in a solution of collodion ten parts, water twenty parts, oxalic acid one-twentieth part, and this will COAT - or emulsionize - both sides of paper if run THROUGH same. See? Then wash same, AFTER it has dried (in the dark) in this solution: Water one quart (This the proportion, to be sure), a solution of SULPHITE of soda - forty hydrometer test - eight ounces, CARBONATE of soda eight ounces - hydrometer test twenty. Then washed in this solution, or submerged for five to ten minutes. Then wash in CLEAR or PLAIN water for five to ten minutes. Then submerge in the HYPO solution and wash thoroughly. In the hypo solution, in this rinsing, for three to five minutes. This will make a waterproof stock, one that will not curl when pressed or dried properly, may be used on tinted stock as well as on plain stocks, and would prove to be an economical and an easy way of handling such coatings. This done by floating, or through the reels as from rolled paper - see?
Should there be the desire for tests to be made in multi-COLORED papers, with the collodion solution there may be added that of bromide of SILVER, or NITRATE of silver. To this QUANTITY (as has been given) the various QUANTITIES of the silver added would SENSITIZE same, so that exposures TO light in VARIOUS degrees will MAKE the various tints; either of pink, shell pink, browns, blacks, grays, and the like. These would necessarily be by the TESTING of same a universal, and the SAME character OR color each time.
After running through the emulsion or COLLODION solution, with the oxalic and the sulphite - not sulphate, but SULPHITE - and the carbonate, and with the washing and fixing and cleansing, we would have a stock that will be light-proof, waterproof, and supply that as may be used for the various products of this organization.

R4. 12/24/31 “With reference to yours of the 4th and 5th, also the Reading of the 4th. Evidently I am not as good as I thought in putting my questions and I must try again.
“Perhaps, if I try to explain to you what I am after and I am successful in giving YOU a clear picture of the process and what the finished product should be like, then you may help me by correcting my questions.
“In the first place, I wish to impress upon you that we are NOT paper makers. We are converters. We buy paper, both white and colored, in rolls and then, with what is generally known as a coating machine, we BRUSH pigment colors (white or tints) on the surface. At our Staten Island factory we generally treat only ONE side.
“Most of this paper is used for covering of boxes, the uncoated side being pasted to the cardboard. After the paper is coated, we have various methods of finishing - some are given a flat finish and others a glossy finish. To illustrate, I enclose sample books Nos. 142, 143 and 74P, showing some of the finished product.
“The paper I am now particularly interested in getting information on is shown in sample book 74p, entitled: ‘L.W. Leather Paper, waterproof coated’. ‘L.W.’ stands for ‘light weight’. We make the same paper in a heavier weight - the method of coating on both, however, is exactly the same.
“I will now explain how this Leather Paper is made:
“We first brush a pigment coating on ONE side in the following manner:
“A roll of paper, which we call our ‘raw-stock’ is placed in our coating machine, it then passes over a cylinder in front of which is a box containing color. In this box is a round brush continuously revolving, that carries a small amount of the color to one side of the paper. The paper then passes on to a rubber apron where several brushes distribute the color evenly. The wet, colored paper, is then hung in festoons on sticks and passes through a long drying room, and is finally wound up into rolls for the NEXT operation. This entire process is one continuous operation, running at a speed of at least 160 ft. per minute.
“This is what we call our GROUND coating.
“These colored, (or grounded) rolls are then run through the same coating machines for the second operation, in the same manner, the only difference being that in the second process
- instead of having a pigment color in the color-box, we have a ‘sizing’ fluid, which is supposed to give the ground coating a WATERPROOF FINISH.
“To illustrate, I enclose two samples: Sample No. 1 represents the first coating (or ground color). Sample No. 2 is the same paper after it has been sized. This particular sample happens to be made on a black raw-stock, but we may use white or any other color.
“The ‘size’ we now use is entirely satisfactory for many purposes, but I have a feeling that, if we could improve this ‘size’, so that the finished paper would be ABSOLUTELY waterproof and the surface could be washed with a sponge without discoloration, new uses would be found for such a paper.
“Such waterproof papers have been made by using a pure shellac size, but the objection is that shellac-sized papers CURL very badly in the process of manufacturing and after they are finished.
“Some manufacturers use a ‘pyroxylin’ coating, but the objection to this is the odor and the fact that it is inflammable.
“The suggestions made in the reading of December 4th, undoubtedly, could be applied to making a waterproof paper at a paper MILL by ‘submerging’ and this is technically known as a TUB-sized paper. Our method, however, is not to submerge the paper in a tub, but to BRUSH a sizing on the surface, or on top of the ground coating, and, therefore, we call it TOP sizing.
“I hope I have made myself clear, so that you now have a better idea of how I should frame the question, in order to get the right information.
“I am enclosing a new set of questions, which perhaps you may be able to improve upon.
“I am, naturally, very much interested in getting this information, if it is possible for me to have it. Above all things, it should mean the possibility of keeping our people fully employed, and the prospect of new business, which, in turn, would eventually bring back profits to the Company and then give me the opportunity to give the work, as it is my desire to do.
“Once more wishing you all a happy Christmas, in which the whole family joins me, I am, with love,”
