GC: You will have before you the body and the enquiring mind of [3861], in his office, at …, 8th floor, New York City, concerning the business proposition which he is negotiating with Oliver C. Harriman and Jack N. Oppenheim. You will give information as to the advisability of completing these negotiations and forming this company. You will answer the questions which will be asked concerning this:
-
EC: Yes, we have the body, the enquiring mind, [3861] - this we have had before. Now, as respecting the contemplated associations with the bodies Harriman and Oppenheim in the undertaking as is laid out, is this to be kept in line with that as is laid OUT in the BEGINNING this would be a most successful undertaking. Are there to be added, as has been contemplated especially by Oppenheim, those of others and others’ interests as may be merged with same from some associations as have been had by this body, then - as we find - there would arise differences of opinions as to the development of the proposition, which would make for cross-currents and some conditions arising later unsatisfactory, but - as those as have been set by Harriman, and as has been considered seriously by [3861], as in relationship to each other, these would be well, kept in that line. Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Shall [3861] form this business relationship with Oliver C. Harriman and Jack N. Oppenheim? (A) These are reversed, in the way as was given here. We have, as has been given, that - are the associations kept in the line as is being set forth in the PRESENT, well. If there are to be those considerations later wherein there will be the injections of those interests that Oppenheim has considered as would be an outlet, or a good association for some interests that he has in mind - if these are to be allowed to enter in, DON’T!
-
(Q) Any other advice? (A) This is a LOT of advice!
-
That is all the questions.
-
We are through with this reading.

Reports
Reports & Follow-up
R1. 12/16/31 Nephew [279]‘s letter: “It looks like [3861] has something in mind for me, as he has resigned from his company, which you will recall he mentioned in the readings. At the same time I have interested him to help me establish an agency here in N.Y. for Dave Kahn’s chemical company. I may take [3861]‘s son in with me on that. I am convinced that there is actually a fortune in it, in a short period of time, if it goes through as I plan, and I think it will.”
R2. 1/1/32 See 279-13 in re business associations with Mr. [3861].
R3. 2/4/32 EC’s letter to Mr. [279]: “We have had, as you know, some readings for Mr. [3861] and also Mr. [2107], but neither of these people signed an application as a member or as desiring to be members of the Association. We would like to have our records straight. If you feel that they are at present interested enough to approach them on the subject, won’t you have each of them sign an application so that we may have the proper records on these?”
R4. 2/17/32 Mr. [279]‘s reply: “At the present time, [3861] and [2107] are out of the question as far as memberships are concerned. I may be able to do something with [3861] at a little later date.”
R5. GD’s note: EC’s arrest in N.Y.C. on 11/7/31 and the resulting publicity may have had a great deal to do with cooling the interest of these men.
