This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his office, 115 West 35th Street, Virginia Beach, Va., this 15th day of September, 1926, in accordance with request made by his father, Mr. […], via Mr. [2889].

1. GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time. You will diagnose the case thoroughly, giving the cause of the existing conditions, also the treatment for cure and relief of this body.

2. EC: Yes, we have the body here.

3. Now, we find the conditions to be met and dealt with, with the physical forces of this body, are that of incoordination, as is seen manifested in the locomotory centers; also in the reaction throughout the whole system, and while there are some physical developments in the body, yet these, from time to time, appear to give the improper distortions, as it were, to other portions, or functioning portions of the system.

4. The cause, or the conditions bringing this about, we find, are of the prenatal, and of that nature also of the character and presentation of the body at the time of birth. In this still birth, as it were, we find these lesions as were formed caused this pre-condition that brings about now these effects in the system.

5. Now these conditions may be met, with care and with attention. It will take persistent and consistent and concerted action on the part of those handling and developing as it were, those physical conditions as exist in this body, [3945], we are speaking of.

6. To bring this to the normal, though, this may be accomplished through this means and manner - this being, then, the first stages to be dealt with, and in this manner - and these should be carried on in this manner for at least six weeks. Then we would find development such as would necessitate the changing of the conditions to meet that developing stage as will be reached by the body through normal conditions, and through changes as will be brought about by the application of these forces:

7. First, then, using that of the osteopathic adjustment and manipulation, for the extremities, and for the centers, especially in the sacral, coccyx and cervical regions, see? By the manipulation we mean those manipulations of the muscular tissue about the centers in these portions of the system that have to do with the locomotion, and with the various forms of the development of the nerve centers and nerve tissues as radiate to the various portions of the body from these centers - applying, then, during this whole period, for at least thirty minutes each day, those vibrations as would be found from this character or battery:

8. To 1 gallon of rain water, we would add:

Copper Sulfate…1 pound, Plain Charcoal…6 ounces, Sulfuric Acid C.P…1 ounce, Common Zinc…3 drams.

This, as we see, charges itself. This should be made and kept in glass container with a wooden top. Through this top there would be made holes for the two poles to enter the solution. These poles should be at least of the half inch square steel - carbon steel - both poles. To these two poles would be attached the small copper wire (insulated - small). To each end of these wires anodes or small plates. The larger plate attached to the left side of jar, or of pole, when facing the container. This larger plate would be attached at the opposite of the umbilicus, or at the 9th and 10th dorsal, see? The other anode, or plate, would be attached (these may be attached by bands, or with something that would hold these in place, see?) to the wrist one day, to the ankle the next, see? This should be kept, and the solution changed every three weeks - or making two solutions during time, see?

9. Do that. Then we would give the information, through these same sources, as to meet those conditions as will arise, and as are to be corrected to bring about the normal conditions in this body - for through this vibration there will be set up the better coordination through nerve and muscular forces of the body, and the development of the sensory and the sympathetic nerve system to coordinate with the brain forces, the development of physical movement, and the action of the bone structure of the body itself proper. The corrections will be made, osteopathically, in those centers and for those conditions as are given.

Dear Mr. […]:

I enclose you, herewith, the reading as was gotten yesterday. I certainly am in hopes that this will prove of a great deal of help, and from the experiences that others have had I feel sure it will, if you will carry out the suggestions as are given. I don’t know who to refer you to that could prepare this battery for you. I believe, though, that I would refer you to Mr. T. B. Brown, of the Brookins Manufacturing Co., of Dayton, Ohio. He has had considerable experience with the various forms of batteries as have been suggested in the readings, and is very much interested in the work.

You will note also that it will be necessary to have another reading made a little later, to meet the conditions as they develop.

We assure you its our desire to be of service if it’s possible, and trust you’ll let us hear from you from time to time.

R2. 11/22/26 Father’s letter to EC:

Mr. Edgar Cayce, Virginia Beach, Va.

Dear Sir:

I am writing this letter as an appendix to your form “C”.

The reading which you gave relative to my son, [3945] was forwarded to me at New York and finally reached me at Indianapolis, several days ago. You are correct as to the ailment being in the locomotory centers. However, it would not seem that this difficulty was pre-natal, or due to the character of presentation at birth. The facts of the matter are that this child was perfectly normal from date of birth up to the middle of August 1925, when he was afflicted with an attack of infantile paralysis. His treatment since that time has been constant. The method of treatment being that of the use of various electrical heat rays, such as no doubt you are familiar with. Also, electric treatment causing contraction of the muscles. For the past three months he has received but one treatment a week. Prior to that time two and three a week. Coupled with this electrical treatment, his mother gives him hot baths each week and massages his limbs and body twice a day.

At this time the boy is walking and running around and seems to be affected only in the left limb from the knee down. The muscles in his lower limb, heel muscle and foot, are weak and have deteriorated, this portion of his limb being somewhat smaller than that portion of his other limb. He has a habit of walking on his left heel instead of placing his foot firmly on the ground. At the same time, bringing himself up on his right foot abnormally high, which causes a limp. Also, due to the fact that he does not place his left foot firmly on the ground, has caused somewhat of an underdevelopment of the left foot. Now, then, you can imagine the extra effort on his right foot and limb has caused this to develop strongly. The fact that he puts his left heel to the ground with his weight on it makes it appear that his limb extends backwards just a trifle too far. However, we find that he is quite capable of holding the left knee a trifle bent forward and when cautioned not to raise on his right foot can walk practically without any limp whatever. The weakness of these muscles and the deterioration of his lower limbs, of course, worry us exceedingly. He walks, runs and kicks his foot ball with the little left limb.

In the above, I have tried to outline to you, as nearly as possible, his present condition and if it is within your power to bring this boy back to normalcy, you may rest assured that I am willing to remunerate you to the fullest extent of my ability.

For the past four weeks, he has been under the care of the osteopath, receiving two treatments per week in addition to one treatment a week of the electric heat rays. I have just completed the battery which you recommended and will start application of this treatment immediately. We will, of course, carry out your suggestions and will be glad to report to you six weeks hence, when he will have had the full six weeks of battery treatment, coupled with the osteopath treatments.

Indianapolis, Ind.

Dear Sir:

In reference to reading given my son [3945], you suggest a battery treatment. I find after preparing same in accordance with your instructions it produces but three tenths of a volt current. However we are now starting the use of same, but owing to the small current thought it well to call to your attention. The electrodes as prescribed by you are of the same material, which is unusual, it generally being necessary to use one of one metal and one another. Copper, Zinc or possibly steel. My thought is that possibly we are not getting as much current as you would desire.

I have your report of the 22nd, and thank you very much for same. I feel very sure, from the experience that others have had with similar conditions as you describe, that if we will follow this out with the reading you will get the results. We want to assure you of our desire to be of help if it is possible, and I feel that it would be well to check up on the condition sometime in the very near future, if you so desire.

Dear Mr. […]:

Replying to yours of the 28th, regarding the battery for your son, during my twenty odd years experience with the readings, there perhaps has been more than a hundred such batteries, or similar ones, for there seemingly is a little difference in each and every one - we have at times had this question to arise. Apparently, however, from the experience of those who have used them, there has been given in each case that current necessary for the individual case, and while this is a very small current, I know, I believe you will find it very effective, and I am in hopes that you are carrying out this suggestion. I certainly appreciate your writing me concerning same, Mr. […], for being situated as we are at the present time it is only through such correspondence, and such individual attention given to each case, that we are able to keep the records as are really necessary in the work we are trying to do. It is our hope and desire to, very soon, have an institution, under the direction of competent men, to follow up each and every case, and to have just as many of these cases as possible under personal observance of the physicians in charge of the institution.

P.S. We have often found in these various batteries that the metals are changed at times. Some instances there is silver, in others nickel, copper, steel or zinc, as you suggest - but, as I say, by practical application we have found that in the preparation of each one that as is necessary for the INDIVIDUAL seems to be that given, for each is treated as an individual, and not as a whole. R6. 1/10/27 Father’s letter to EC:

Mr. Edgar Cayce Virginia Beach, Va.

Dear Sir:

I wish to advise you that we have completed the six weeks program as outlined by you for [3945]. We do not note any improvement in his condition. Unfortunately, I believe the osteopath treatments a trifle severe for one in his state. I have always been under the impression that an osteopath is more or less massaging, however. I find this is not the case and that they work principally by manipulation of the joints.

If you have anything further to suggest, I would indeed be very glad to hear from you.

R7. 1/13/27 EC’s letter to [3945]‘s father:

Mr. […] Indianapolis, Ind.

My dear Mr. […]

I am just in receipt of your of the 10th, and note what you have to say regarding the condition of your son. I am sorry I can’t make something really definite at the present time. I believe, however, the thing for us to do is to go over the condition and see what may be found, and see what the suggestions would be for further improvement. It may be barely possible that we can get this in between now and the 1st of February. If your son is at the address given most of the time, or all the time, why I am sure this could be done. But our appointments are so far in advance unless we can do this between now and the 1st, I am afraid it would be four or five weeks before we could get to it, as we have some special work on hand that must be done, and appointments have already been made for this work after the 1st.

Please let us know about this right away, if you would like to have the reading, and we’ll see if we can’t get this information.
