This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 28th day of March, 1944, in accordance with request made by the self - Mrs. [4009], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by Miss Xenobia Welch, [3356] and the book, THERE IS A RIVER.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. (Notes read to and transcribed by Jeanette Fitch.)]
Time of Reading Set bet. 3:30 to 4:30 P. M. Taken 3:45 to 3:55 P. M. Eastern War Time. …, Conn.
-
GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes - these are rather serious disturbances for this body. The adhesions in the area of the lacteal duct, as associated with the organs of the pelvis and the reflexes with the brain centers in the base of the brain, or at the first cervical, and the activities of the muscular forces and tendons of the body, have caused the lack of reactions in extremities or locomotory centers.
-
The administrations that have been made the more recently have purified to some extent the glandular forces, but there needs to be the application of heat from the oil over the lacteal duct area, or the lower portion of the liver and gall duct area, and caecum. There should be the breaking up of the lesions in these areas, osteopathically or by massage.
-
We would have at least three to four series of Castor Oil Packs. Apply these for an hour each day for three days in succession, and then leave off until the next week and apply again, and so on each week for several series.
-
After each three-day series take internally a tablespoonful of Olive Oil.
-
Keep these up until the lesions are broken up.
-
Also we would begin using the low electrical forces that will carry Chloride of Gold to the body vibratorially, through the Wet Cell Appliance. The small copper plate would be attached to the 9th dorsal, while the large nickel plate - through which the Gold Solution passes vibratorially, in the proportions of one grain Chloride of Gold Sodium to each ounce of distilled water (and use three ounces) - would be attached to the lacteal duct and umbilical plexus. Make these attachments each day for thirty minutes.
-
Following each of the Appliance treatments, let the body be massaged with this combination of oils, also in the massage attempt to break up the lesions in the lacteal duct area -
Olive Oil…2 ounces, Peanut Oil…2 ounces, Lanolin (melted)…1/4 ounce.
Massage these oils through the abdomen as well as over the locomotory centers and the limbs.
-
When these treatments are begun, leave off those properties that have been taken for the clarifying of glandular forces (Atomidine).
-
When the Castor Oil Packs and Wet Cell Appliance treatments have been taken for a period of a month, or at least four series of the Castor Oil Packs, we would then leave these off and begin the use of the short wave electrical treatments once each week.
-
Also we would have osteopathic corrections once each week, to correct and break up the lesions in the gall duct area.
-
Also continue the massage with oils.
-
Do these and when these have been followed for six months, we would give further instructions.
-
(Do these and when these have been followed for six months, we would give further instructions!)
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Sex life never been satisfactory. (A) As just indicated this is a part of the disturbance from the pelvic organs, from the lesions indicated in the area about the upper or larger lacteal duct where greater assimilation takes place, close to the gall duct area - you see - in the right side.
-
(Q) Why pain in chest all winter? (A) This is from a reflex action to the nerves in the area of the upper cervicals.
-
(Q) Why does my little finger break out when I wear a certain ring? (A) The supersensitiveness of the body to vibrations of this particular ring - from those vibrations that are a part of the ring.
-
(Q) What sin brought on physical condition? (A) It isn’t a question of what sin, but a question of correcting the body-mind, purposes and desires, letting sin be eliminated from the ideals and purposes of the body.
-
(Q) Why can I barely bend my feet to walk some mornings when I arise? (A) As indicated, this affects the locomotory centers, from the lesions in the lacteal duct area. Thus the character of treatments by the masseuse and the corrections osteopathically for breaking up lesions that should be given after these treatments.
-
(Q) Arthritis not yet cleared up, what shall I do and use? (A) These are portions of the disturbances indicated, and the treatments suggested will aid in clearing these conditions.
Do as outlined.
- We are through with this Reading.

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 4/18/44 [4009]‘s ltr. to EC:
Dear Mr. Cayce:
As soon as the reading came I started following instructions with hot packs of Castor oil three nights and then took one tablespoon olive oil the next day. I begin the third period of oil packs to-night, but I have just secured a 2 gallon crock as Mr. Godfrey had none at present, so you see that there will be a slight delay before I can begin that part of the treatment. The naturopath who has given me short wave, sun-lamp and Swedish massage also uses a table where one lies and he turns on electricity to vibrate thru the limbs to help circulation and varicose veins. Should I discontinue that part?
To-night the pains in my toes, especially of the right foot and in the fingers of the right hand are quite bad, but I think that I am tired, and since the news came last week that our only son, a pilot of a B17 over Germany, went down March 29th, the kind friends have rather sapped my strength, since I not only have to help my husband but them.
I still feel that he must be a prisoner as the returning planes told that his did not go up in flames. His faith in God’s love and care brought him back from many a raid, he wrote me.
I’m tired now but must get dinner for my husband and daughter, and I am so glad that I can.
Sincerely, [4009]

R3. 9/22/44 [4009]‘s letter:
Dear Mr. Cayce:-
I shall probably be at our prayer group meeting on October 3rd if my check reading comes in the morning and as I was notified months ago. We always meet 10.30 to 12 every Tuesday.
I asked Adams to send a report, but of late I have felt conscious of holding my breath while doing my housework, etc., and have considerable pain in my feet, elbows, right wrist also have had return of considerable (slight) pain in chest and hives all last week. Perhaps I’ve overdone by caning, painting the wood-work in house besides my regular work…
It was so good to meet your Dr. Ober at Camp Farthest Out. If it is in God’s plan I hope that you and Mrs. Cayce may be with us in 1945 too.
Questions:
Have the osteopath treatments been satisfactory? Shall I need to take the wet cell treatments again? How much rest should I allow myself per day until I get so that I can do all the things I wish to help others? What caused hives? What will be best way to correct prolapsed condition? I am wearing a ring inside as I have at previous times.
Will it cause me to have a return of sinus condition if we get another dog? I scratch my scalp. Why?
[4009]
R4. 10/9/44 GD’s form letter to [4009]:
Dear Mrs. [4009]:
Due to Mr. Cayce’s continued illness we are unable to get your reading on Oct. 3rd, 1944. In consideration for his health, Mr. Cayce will not return to work for some months. For this reason we are unable to offer you another appointment at this time. If you still wish to have a reading, let us hear from you in six to eight months, at which time your request will be given its proper consideration, in light of your previous contact with us.
In view of the above, we are returning your membership fee in the amount of $10.00. If you will again apply for a reading, do not send the membership fee until three weeks before your appointment date.
It is our hope that you will keep in touch with us through subscribing to our Monthly Bulletin, which carries news of the Association activities and extracts from readings, or our Weekly Letter, which consists solely of extracts from the readings. We will send you either of these for six dollars a year or both for twelve dollars a year.
Financial aid through gifts, whether small or large, constitutes a fund which makes it possible for us to carry on the research work, so that we may develop our publications in order to help all who are not fortunate enough to have their individual reading.
Appreciating your interest and hoping that we may soon hear from you in regard to some phase of our Publications and Research Program, I am
Sincerely, [signed] Gladys Davis, Secretary ASS’N FOR RESEARCH AND ENLIGHTENMENT, INC.
We would suggest that you continue to use the information given you in your first reading.
R5. 10/4/46 Mary Ann Woodard’s letter to [4009]:
Mrs. [4009] …, Conn.
Dear Mrs. [4009]
The Association for Research & Enlightenment is excerpting the information on gems and stones for Mr. Green, a gem collector who is sponsoring the study. We would like to make as complete a report as possible so are asking if you will be kind enough to give us further information on your case?
Your reading said that you were sensitive to the vibrations of a certain ring. You said that wearing it made the finger break out. Will you tell us about this ring? What kind of stone and metal is it? Does the ring have any particular history that you know about? That is; was it made for you and was it a new ring or is it an antique which might be influenced by some other person? Any information which you can give us will be helpful. Also will you tell us about the rash or breaking out. Was it a red rash and was it sore or did it itch, etc.?
You may be interested to know that several people were told to wear certain stones because they would be helpful. Your case is the only one we have indexed which told of negative effects so we are especially interested in your case.
As you know the names of individuals do not appear on information sent out from the association. Names are still held strictly confidential, only excerpts from the readings are used. We are therefore asking now if you would object to Mr. Green having your name for any future correspondence on this subject?
Since the time we can devote to this study is very limited will you be good enough to send us a prompt reply? Please accept our thanks for this information. Now, we will see that you receive a copy of the bulletin on this subject if you are interested.
Very truly yours, Mary Ann Woodard
R6. 10/28/46 [4009]‘s letter to Mary Ann Woodard:
Dear Miss Woodard:-
In reply to your letter of October fourth, I am very glad to give you the information about the ring. Here is the story:-
It is a large stone of turquois and matrix set in silver. A friend received it as a bequest given on a death-bed. The ring is not especially valuable nor is it ancient but was bequeathed as a gift-of-love.
My friend kept it for a number of years but could not wear it because it did not fit her finger. I admired it so much that she gave it to me in the same gift-of-love spirit.
Within a few days my finger became inflamed and itchy under the stone. Of course I removed it until it was well and then put on the ring again. After a few days the same condition returned and lasted until I took off the ring. I tried again and again to wear it but always with the same result.
Then while writing out questions for my Physical Reading my friend suggested that I ask for the cause of this condition. The ring has been restored to her for it now fits her little finger.
You have my full permission to give my address to Mr. Green or to anyone else who is interested, and I will be delighted to answer any further questions relative to it. Also, I will try to be more prompt in my reply.
Sincerely yours, [4009]
R7. 2/24/47 [4009]‘s letter to Lydia J. Schraeder Gray:
Dear Mrs. Gray,
It was such a treat to have you at our prayer group last Tuesday morning and I want you to know how much I appreciated it.
When Mr. Cayce gave me a reading he said that my body was in a serious condition - rather serious disturbances were the exact words. This was on March 28th 1944. Treatment included a series of Castor Oil Packs (just what do they accomplish?) then Wet Cell Appliance with Chloride of Gold then osteopathic corrections to correct and break up lesions in the gall duct area.
I knew no doctor who was interested in the reading but secured a young osteopath who was a bit skeptical. However after six months I sent for my second reading only to be informed it must be postponed and you know the rest.
Last year I had part of my left breast removed and have been some better however I did feel I needed more advice to carry on correct treatment. Would you know if it might be advisable to repeat the treatments first given?
I do hope that I have not bored you with the lengthy description. Xenobia’s case was so different and I am thankful for her help from Mr. Cayce.
Thank you again for your help at the group meeting. They meet with me at ten-thirty Tuesday, so perhaps you might join us at that time in prayer.
Sincerely, [4009]
R8. 6/16/53 [4009]‘s letter to HLC:
Dear Mr. Cayce:
Edgar gave me a reading March 23, ‘43 and was to have given me another in six months but could not. He corresponded with me regarding others before I met him in New York in Nov. 1942.
Please send me any information regarding Meniere’s Disease - fluid in inner ear, nausea and equilibrium upset as well as continual buzzing in ear. The surgeon told his patient that although they can cut the nerve and balance will be restored the noise may continue although he will be deaf in that ear.
Sincerely, [4009]
R9. 7/23/53 GD’s note: I sent Abstract on Deafness and referred her to Dr. Fogel.

B1. 9/29/43 [4009]‘s letter to EC:
Dear Mr. Cayce:
Please excuse informality. I feel as if you were a friend. On August 2nd you wrote that you were sending the book “A Search for God” which to date I have not received. My dear friend Xenobia Welch suggests that I notify you. She and I “click” in our ideas. Possibly the copy was lost in the mail, but if for any reason it has not been sent, won’t you please autograph it for me?
Two weeks ago it seemed as if I must send for an emergency reading, but started first series of Atomidine on the twentieth and am careful of diet.
Even as a girl my hands were always white - poor circulation even then. Imagine tho I never gave it a thought.
During the first nineteen years of our married life my husband spent almost all his earnings aside from essentials required - on doctors - thirty-one to be exact. Then by alkaline diet I helped myself greatly.
God was so good to me to show me the wisdom of carefully choosing correct diet for my children. I also could help many others, but whenever I have overtaxed my strength the arthritis returned more than ordinarily and the nerve condition also.
If this meets with your approval - that is taking Atomidine, etc. I shall wait until March 28th unless, as you say, there is an earlier opportunity.
On page 427 you refer to Atomidine spray - would that be 15-20 drops to 1/3 glass water as on bottle for mouth wash? My daughter has frequent colds and tons of trouble.
Sincerely, [4009]
B2. 10/12/43 EC’s letter to [4009]
Dear Mrs. [4009]:
I have yours of the 29th. I am sorry that there has been some slip-up or the book was lost in the mail. Our emergency readings are mighty bad. The best we can do now is in March, but I hope you get the book all right and trust that you will be feeling much better real soon.
Ten or fifteen drops in a third of a glass of water, [as mouth was or gargle], but it should be plain water, not distilled water.
Thanking you and hoping that we may be of a real service, I am,
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce
B3. 12/9/43 [4009]‘s letter to EC:
Dear Mr. Cayce:
Because Xenobia Welch wants to get started with the peanut oil massage I am appealing to you to send it to me at your earliest convenience. I realize that I should not bother you, but I have tried in vain to procure any in Hartford.
A card received this morning from […] says that is $1.00 per quart - takes six points, but I’m quite sure that when I talked with him he mentioned some salesman’s name, however, I cannot recall it. Perhaps Mr. Cayce can pass this along to the right party and I’ll send postage when I receive it.
Many thanks for your kind letter. Yes I am continuing with the Atomidine - am taking the seventh period of drops and am taking the Epsom Salts baths, diet and olive oil. Directly after my return from seeing you in New York last month I developed a cough which has persisted all the month - with it a general let down in the body - piles and nerve exhaustion, but I feel that it is enforced rest, so look forward to great improvement soon.
Thank you again for the kindness of whomever I am troubling to send the peanut oil for Miss Welch.
May your Christmas be filled with the peace that only Christ can give.
Sincerely, [4009]
B4. 12/17/43 EC’s letter:
Dear Mrs. [4009]:
Yours of the 9th received with the request that we try to obtain the peanut oil for you. We are almost as far from the source of supply of these as you are, for we can’t get it except through mail, and that I doubt if we could get it sent directly to you. If you have your grocer or your druggist order this from Planters Peanut Co., Suffolk, Virginia, I think you will be able to obtain this. This is one of the best sources of supply that I know of, but any peanut company can supply it. We are, of course, returning your check and the ration stamps. I think it would be better to order it through your grocer or your druggist. Sorry not to be able to be the means of a help at this time.
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce EC/VW
B5. 3/21/44 [4009]‘s letter to EC:
Mr. Edgar Cayce Virginia Beach, Virginia
Dear Mr. Cayce:
Your letter of August 2nd gave the time for my reading as March 28th 3.30 to 4.30, so I shall be at home praying that you may be the channel thru which God may help my body to vibrate in harmony with my mind which has found peace. All of my life my desire has been to help others, but my husband feels that I use up more energy than I should, however the need is so great, and so few there are who will help. I have helped myself through correcting faulty diet, taking massage, sun lamp and vibration treatment. Shall I continue these? What is best method for me to correct body chemistry? Improve circulation? Nerve tension? Best method of relaxation? Sex life never been satisfactory. Shall I use a vibrator for relief? I sleep better when in room by myself, but why do I feel the need of placing my hand on stomach? Why pain in chest all winter? What sin brought on physical condition? Why does my little finger break out when I wear a certain ring? What value is a medicine called Bee Sting? What causes sourness in mouth upon awakening? Why can I barely bend my feet to walk some mornings when I arise? Shall I continue using Atomidine, as I have for months? Arthritis not yet cleared up, what shall I do and use?
