GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes. As we find conditions are not good with this body. While these have not as yet reached the proportions as to be called a violent case of anemia, or of the permanent character, they are bordering on same.
-
The increase in the size of the spleen, unless measures are taken differently, may become very disturbing to the body.
-
For some time back there has been a disturbance in the structural portion or in the marrow of the bones, that has required a great quantity of activity of the leucocytes, and the destruction of the red blood cells has become exaggerated to meet the needs of the condition. Thus the engorgements especially in the right portion of the spleen itself and also some disturbance with the pancreas.
-
These cause the characters of anemia experienced by the body, the weakness, the inability of proper assimilation or distribution of assimilations through the digestive system.
-
First, for this body, we would give, at least a week apart two x-ray treatments to the spleen.
-
Then, after resting five days, begin taking one drop of Atomidine in half a glass of water each morning about thirty minutes before breakfast, for five days in succession.
-
Then begin with the massages to stimulate circulation especially along the areas where the ribs join the cerebrospinal system. These should be given rather briskly on each side of the spine, stimulating the sympathetic nerve areas that connect with the segments along the spinal column. Use cocoa butter for the massaging, in a circular motion downward all the way from the first of the rib areas at the 1st dorsals to the lower portion of the 7th, 8th, 9th dorsals.
-
After these massages have been given every other day for at least eight to ten such treatments, then give three times each week the ultra-violet with the green glass projected between the ultra-violet and the body. Use only the Mercury light, at least thirty-eight inches from the body. About fourteen inches from the body, between the body and the ultra-violet, use a piece of green plate glass about eight by ten inches or ten by twelve inches. This is not to be painted glass, but stained green glass, or colored in the glass, you see.
-
This should be used not more than a minute to a minute and a half, three times each week.
-
After each such treatment, we would massage the body with the cocoa butter. Begin with the limbs, as well as the rib area, the areas from hip to knee, then to ankle and foot. The cocoa butter will act as a food for body circulation that will be changed by these treatments.
-
Do include often in the diet beef juice and liver. The liver should always be broiled, and just as rare as the body can eat it.
-
Do keep good eliminations even if it is necessary to use colonic irrigations at times.
-
Use vegetables and fruits, rather, to control the eliminations.
-
Do these and we will have better conditions for the body.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) What sort of work should I undertake after being cured? (A) This will depend a great deal upon how well the treatments are followed and the amount of recovery, but work that is outside is preferable. Anything having to do with detail work would be well for the body, but outside rather than office work.
-
We are through with this Reading.
Copy to Self ” ” Ass’n file ” under case number for indexing (3/26/44 GD’s note: See directions [which were enclosed] for preparing pure Beef Juice.
If you experience any trouble getting started with these treatments, we suggest that you get in touch with one of our Active Members: Mr. R. M. Taylor, 49 Geary St., Room 307, San Francisco, Calif., who has experience with the Readings over a period of years.
If you are unable to secure the green glass locally, it may be secured or ordered from The American Plate & Window Glass Company, Prospect Ave., East Orange, New Jersey, for $2.50 per square foot. A piece about ten by twelve inches is sufficient.)

Note: Please give name and address of any physicians who helped you carry out your reading. (Use reverse side, or additional sheet, if required.) Dr. Ketchum of Palo Alto offered to be of help if I should find difficulties in San Francisco obtaining the X-ray treatments, etc., but I did not need his assistance.
Q. Please give technical name of ailment. (This is needed for indexing and compilation of similar cases.) A. As above: Gaucher Disease of spleen, liver and bones. There is little to add to the report on the reverse side.
First symptoms: Pain in the right hip bone especially when walking. Loss of [weight?], great tiredness during working hours.
Biopsy was done - segment of bone tissue was removed from the bone (or examination and diagnosis as it now stands was established already in 1931. Hip and leg was put in plaster cast - later in leather brace for resting. My condition at present is considered chronic and of very slow progression. White blood count shows leucopenia fluctuating between 1600- 3600 WBC. I am not working - I quit under doctor’s orders in 1931 - but my general health is pretty good. All vital organs, lungs, heart, etc. in good condition. I understand blood pressure is normal, my weight has not changed much in recent years, averaging 126 lbs.
The literature of your organization as well as the books like “There is a River”, “Stranger in the Earth”, “Search for God I and II” as well as your periodicals have done much for me - giving me a happy point of view about the meaning of this life and the next. I believe I have gained considerably by my getting to know your group, and my sincere thanks to all of you. [4019]

Background
B1. Questions submitted:
- What is the source or cause of the disease?
- What is the extent of the disease? Is it confined to spleen and liver or has it spread through the bones?
- What treatment is indicated?
- What sort of work should I undertake after being cured?
B2. 8/24/43 [4019]‘s letter: “14 yrs. ago became ill with what was diagnosed as Gaucher Disease, considered incurable. Had to quit work because of severe pain and general weakness. Have been taking certain medicines, mainly designed to keep me in good general condition, but they have had no effect on the disease.” [Gaucher’s Disease: An affection described by Gaucher as “primary epithelioma of the spleen,” but probably identical with splenic anemia.]
B3. 11/8/43 Letter from [4019] to EC from San Francisco, Calif.: “I have received this morning your letter of October 30 and I appreciate your great promptness. The date of the appointment set by you for the afternoon of March 26, 1944 is, naturally, all right with me, and even though it is still very early, I shall try, if at all possible, to spend that afternoon at my home… However, I presume that we shall have some correspondence before that date.
“Now referring to the several enclosures. I found a mimeographed Application for Associate Membership. With my last letter I mailed to you the filled out application, torn from your booklet about your Life and Work, following page 20. Do you want me to fill out the form found in that last letter and mail it back to you?
“Thanks for the offer of the special edition of Mr. Sugrue’s ‘There Is A River.’ I have a copy of the regular edition, purchased here in San Francisco right after I started corresponding with you. From the folder of the publications, I should like to order: ‘Am I My Brother’s Keeper?’ ‘The Common Cold’ and ‘Care of Young Children’ from the Physical Case Studies. I enclose 30 cents, which according to the folder should cover the cost of the three booklets.
“Since according to your letter you are not familiar with the term Gaucher, I quote the diagnosis that my first physician in St. Louis decided upon:
“‘Osteitis - presence of hipophage histiocytes of a type characteristic for Gaucher disease. Swelling of the liver, spleen pinqueculae of the conjunctivae. Diagnosis: Gaucher’s Disease, extreme chronic course, probably stationary, tendency for leucopenia.’
“Perhaps this will throw a little more light on the subject. Thank you for your past great interest…”
