GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [4024].
-
As we find there are rather serious infections that are consuming in their nature. The operative measures that have been a part of the application have retarded rather than aided. These have aided, though, in that there is not the necessity of collapsing the lungs and that there can be the ridding of this infection from the body.
-
If this is allowed to attack or cause such a strain on the body, then it may become very serious. For when there is an attacking of any organ of the central nerve and blood supply, the associated organs, as here - the liver and the kidneys - are those to be the greater warned of, as to allowing infection to settle in or about the activity of these organs. That is when it becomes the more serious.
-
That there have been periods when there was upsetting in these indicates the seriousness of the disturbance and the inroads being made upon the body.
-
First we would give that the body begin taking internally one drop of Atomidine in half a glass of water, every other morning before breakfast, until five drops have been taken. Measure the drop, using a medicine dropper not just pouring it from the bottle.
-
Also begin inhaling the fumes from pure apple brandy in a charred oak keg, prepared with two vents in one end. This should be redistilled brandy. Do not swallow the fumes into the stomach but inhale into the lungs. Do not let the inhalations be too heavy in the beginning, else we may cause some disturbance to the coughing and the raw area in the left lung, as well as sore areas in the trachea on the right side. But as these fumes are inhaled, they will cause the destruction of active tissue and, if the other properties are added, the sputum will soon become negative and less active.
-
Also there should be be taken twice each week, say Tuesdays and Thursdays, - preferably at the noon meal a whole wheat cracker spread thinly with Calcios. This is to increase the activity of the blood supply in the producing of red cells and to unify the activity of heart, liver and kidneys, as well as the lung in the respiratory activity.
-
There is a tendency also for the acid in the duodenum to become lessened in its ability to react upon the digestive forces or the chyle and the activity in the digestive system, in stomach and duodenum. Once each week in the beginning on Wednesdays - at the evening meal, drink a full glass of raw milk in which there is stirred a teaspoonful of Acigest. Let this stand about two to ten minutes before it is taken, stirring every few minutes. Of course, the milk should be from a test herd or from a tested individual cow. It would be preferable if the milk could be taken with the animal heat still in it.
-
In the diet do add plenty of chicken. This should not be fried but smothered or stewed or the like, and not taken with large quantities of bread or with other than whole wheat or brown bread, rye or whole wheat bread. Do use quantities of soups that have meats and vegetables in same, those things that are body building. Have all characters of fruits and vegetables that are yellow in color. Do use plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables for the body.
-
Gradually keep in the open but not in the direct sun, nor where there is dampness or night air.
-
Do these and we will remove these disturbances.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Would a dry, western climate clear up the positive sputum? (A) As we find, where pine and sea air may be had, is preferable to a dry western climate; such as around Asheville or around any seashore where pines are growing. The pines should be a part of the air breathed, especially in the Spring.

R1. 5/7/44 Letter: “Your letter on March 27th was most gratifying to me, and this summer I am going to follow all instructions given.”
R2. 7/9/44 [4024]‘s letter to EC:
Asheville, North Carolina
Dear Mr. Cayce:
I had a reading the latter part of March, and have come to Asheville as you suggested, leaving the Sanatorium at Alto, Georgia on June first. My difficulty has been in finding apple brandy, redistilled, to inhale, as you prescribed. It cannot be had here, and a friend in Atlanta can find only GRAPE brandy for me. Will this do just as well as apple brandy? I will greatly appreciate your letting me know, for I am most anxious to get started on your prescribed course of treatment.
If only apple brandy is effective I wonder if you could tell me where I could get some. However, North Carolina is a dry state, and it is against the law to send stuff in. I might be able to get a friend driving up to bring it in, though, if you can tell me where I can get it. I do hate to bother you with this request, but I am quite worried and will appreciate so much the desired information.
With every good wish to you, I am,
Sincerely yours, (Miss) [4024]
R3. 7/12/44 EC’s letter to [4024]:
Asheville, North Carolina
Dear Miss [4024]:
I have your letter of July 9th. You may be able to get the distilled apple brandy of course redistilled is better, but don’t try using the grape bandy, as this won’t do. No, I don’t know where to tell you to get it, but I am sure that you can get it. You can get it at any liquor store in Virginia.
I do hope that you will succeed in finding this. It may be some trouble to follow through with this treatment, but I feel very sure that you will get results, if you will follow through with the suggestions made.
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce EC/jf
R4. 10/2/44 [4024]‘s letter:
Dear Dr. Cayce:
I wish to report my condition to you at the end of the first month’s treatment, as outlined in my reading of March 27, 1944. I was finally able to get distilled apple brandy and a charred oak keg, and started inhaling September first, also taking prescribed medicines. After a month I can see no change in sputum, and still have frequent upset stomach spells. Of course I realize a month is a very short time. Do you expect me to show improvement under two or three months, Dr. Cayce? I am not discouraged, however, I want to be sure I am doing things right.
At first I inhaled about five minutes at a time because you told me to go slowly in the beginning. Then, several days ago I tried inhaling a half hour, three times a day. This tired my lungs, so what time limit do you think would be best? I’m SO anxious to follow your instructions to the letter.
Do you think it would be advisable to take anymore Atomidine? I took five drops as prescribed in my reading; and it seemed to help me at the time. I take Acigest once a week in raw milk - could that be taken more often? and Calcios twice a week on a whole wheat cracker.
The Asheville climate has been fine this summer, but with winter coming on, what do you think of my going to Florida? You suggested the seashore or Asheville in my reading, so do you think it would be more beneficial for me to stay here during the cold weather or be at the seashore in a warmer climate?
I would greatly appreciate your letting me know the answers to my questions, and PLEASE forgive my asking so many. It’s just that I realize this is my last chance to get well, Dr. Cayce, and I want to be guided exactly by your advice.
With kindest personal regards to you, I am
Sincerely, (Miss) [4024]
R5. 10/19/44 GD’s letter to [4024] via IMG:
Asheville, N.C.
Dear Miss [4024]
Kindly consider the following suggestions concerning the questions you asked regarding your reading.
The half hour period of inhaling the brandy fumes is much too long. I would cut this down to five minutes as the longest period. On mornings when you seem unusually tired I would inhale the fumes only three to six times. Be very careful not that you inhale the fumes so that they go to your lungs, NOT to your stomach.
Do keep up the Calcios and Acigest just as given in your reading. You might take a 5-day course of the Atomidine about once every two or three months.
Be sure to watch your diet very closely, for your body is dependent upon such foods to rebuild while the healing is taking place. I believe you will find it most effective to make out a schedule for your daily activities, including rest periods, diet and your treatments. Thus you will keep more regular habits and this should further aid you through planning mentally your future.
As to the climate, you will have to judge. That which would be nearest to the Asheville - or Asheville itself, since your reading was gotten in March, would indicate that you only need to take more care for not catching cold, etc., in the winter.
The enclosed form letter, etc. will serve to give you further information about Mr. Cayce at this time, as well as the Association activities.
Sincerely, [signed] Gladys Davis, Sec’ty GD:mv
R6. 12/11/44 [4024]‘s letter to EC:
Dear Mr. Cayce:
It is now a little over three months since I started the treatments outlined in my reading of March 27, 1944. My first report, sent you October 1st after a month of treatment, told of no change in my condition. Since then, however, my frequent upset stomach spells have been lessened considerably. For almost two months I had no toxic trouble, but have had one spell lately. I am so glad to report so much improvement. I take the medicines as prescribed, and have kept a fairly good schedule as Miss Davis suggested in a letter to me.
I inhale the brandy fumes each day as prescribe, but I am sorry to report there is no change in sputum. So far as I can tell I inhale the fumes into my throat and lungs, and not into my stomach. Do you feel that I should be showing signs of improvement in sputum by now? You are the judge of this, Mr. Cayce, I am not. I don’t wish to appear impatient at all; it’s just that I am so anxious to progress as you expect me to. And if you are not progressing as you think I should wouldn’t a check physical reading be of great benefit to me at this point? Of course I realize you have been ill yourself, and I am terribly sorry. I hope a long rest has brought about your complete recovery. You must be swamped with applications for readings, and please don’t think me “pigging” in asking for one now. But since you have started me off would it be possible to give me a check reading sometime soon if that is indicated?
I have been getting up gradually for about seven months now, and by February 1st I want to try a light, half-day job. Do you think that would be all right? Of course I would continue right on with your treatments and try not to overtax my strength.
I shall deeply appreciate your answers and opinion on all I have asked in this report, Mr. Cayce. I trust that you are feeling well again, and I send you every good wish.
Cordially, (Miss) [4024]

R7. 1/7/46 [4024]‘s letter to GD:
Dear Miss Davis:
Since writing you last week to inquire about Dr. Bidwell [Wm. T. Bidwell, D.C. - “master pendulist”], I have developed a bad cold with accompanying bronchial cough. I called a doctor, and am to go to him later for X-Ray. However, I may go on to Dr. Bidwell - this sort of brings up the matter to a head. Guess you received my letter about a week ago, so I won’t restate my questions. I do hate to bother you, but I’m so very worried about myself now and feel I must decide something right away. Of course I don’t expect you to give me any “guarantee” that Dr. Bidwell can do this or that, but your evaluation, based either on your own observation, if that has been possible - or an evaluation based on the opinions of the members of the Association who have visited the sanitarium in Greenville will help to guide my decision.
Again - I apologize for bothering you, and I thank you so AWFULLY much for a reply as soon as possible.
With best wishes, [4024]
P.S. In the event that you have already answered my letter of December 29th, I’m sorry, and just disregard this.
R8. 1/10/46 GD’s letter:
Miss [4024] Asheville, North Carolina Dear Miss [4024]:-
Pardon such a delay in answering your first letter. The second one just came. I intended to answer immediately, because I know how anxious you are to get started on a constructive course of treatments.
Inasmuch as you have had a reading I feel that you should go to someone who can help you carry it out, or at least continue in the same vein. Many people have gotten results in T.B. cases from following suggestions in the readings and I see no reason why you cannot.
I believe that a good osteopath would be the solution, and fortunately a Dr. Emil Smith has just moved to Tryon, North Carolina and also spends a couple of days each week in Greenville. At least it will be worth your while to get in touch with him and let him go over your reading and talk with you about your case. He has treated several people who’ve had readings (while he was living in Baltimore, Maryland), and they all seem to think he is a splendid osteopath. In one instance the girl (a friend of mine) said that she had been to six osteopaths before that, trying to get one who would give her the treatments the reading called for, and she didn’t get results until Dr. Smith agreed to work with her on it.
Recently we had a note from Dr. Smith telling us he had moved to Tryon, N.C., and would be very glad to cooperate with us in any way possible on our research work. Our January Bulletin carries extracts on TUBERCULOSIS. I’ll send you a copy as soon as it is off the press - in another week now.
I’m sending a copy of this letter to Dr. Smith so that he will be familiar with your name when you do call him.
While we have had wonderful reports on Dr. Bidwell from many people who’ve gone to him, I feel that in your case Dr. Smith would be better - as Dr. Bidwell never had experience with following the readings, and even now he naturally will use his own methods in preference or in conjunction with whatever has been suggested through this source.
Please feel free to write me again. I’ll try to be more prompt next time. We hope to get more and more information published on specific ailments and I shall certainly keep you informed regarding the T.B. findings.
Sincerely, Gladys Davis, Sec’ty
R9. 5/22/52 [4024]‘s letter to Ass’n:
Association for Research and Enlightenment, Inc. Virginia Beach, Virginia Gentlemen:
Several years ago I was a member of your association (1945 or 1946, I believe) and wonder if it is still a going concern. I was very much interested in your work, and still am, although I have evinced no interest these past few years. I had a physical reading with Mr. Cayce in 1944.
If your work is still progressing I would like to join the association again. Please let me know so that I can send a check.
All good wishes to you.
Sincerely, [4024]

B1. 1/22/44 [4024]‘s letter to EC:
Georgia State Tuberculosis Sanitorium Alto, Georgia
Dr. Edgar Cayce Virginia Beach, Va.
Dear Dr. Cayce,
I have just received word from [5649]‘s son that you have kindly consented to give me an immediate reading due to the urgency of my case. I appreciate this more than I can say, and enclosed you will find my application and money order for twenty dollars ($20.00).
I first wrote to you November 20, 1943, and in that letter gave you a brief resume of my case. But I shall repeat that here so that you will be sure to have the salient facts at hand.
I have been ill with moderately advanced tuberculosis for 6 1/2 years, having spent the past 3 1/2 years here at the State Sanatorium of Alto, Ga. The doctors have given me every possible treatment, including three operations for the removal of ribs. These operations were performed in an attempt to get my sputum negative, but they were unsuccessful. Then a bronchoscopy (examination of the bronchial tubes) was given, but this failed to locate the source of infection. All that can be determined is that positive sputum is probably coming either from somewhere in the upper lobe of the right lung or a small branch of the bronchial tube in that area. X-ray pictures do not reveal the diseased area.
I am not clinically ill, Dr. Cayce, but my case is so stubborn, with continued positive sputum, that it defies all efforts of the doctors here at the sanatorium. A new rule has just gone into effect whereby all patients not taking treatment must leave regardless of their condition, so I am now dismissed. This makes me doubly anxious to have immediate advice and direction for a future course of action, for I don’t know where to turn.
My plans are to stay here for a few weeks longer, though, so on my application I gave my address as the sanatorium. If, when you let me know the time of my appointment, I should be at home, I shall let you know, but if you will take me very soon I shall be at Alto.
You can imagine how much it would mean to me if my case could be properly diagnosed - the source of positive sputum located
- and direction given for obtaining negative tests. I believe that you can help me, Dr. Cayce, and I shall be in meditation at the time of my reading. Please let me know when my appointment will be and I shall appreciate any further directions that would be conducive to the success of the reading.
Let me thank you again for your kindness in accepting my case as a special exception.
Sincerely yours, [4024]
B2. 3/22/44 [4024]‘s letter to EC:
Dear Dr. Cayce:
My reading with you is due March 27th, and I remember that on the appointment slips there was space for two or three questions which I failed to fill in. May I submit the following questions now?
- Where is the source of my positive sputum?
- Would diasone prove to be a cure in my case?
- Would a dry, Western climate clear up my positive sputum?
You have all the facts of my case in previous letters.
I shall be in meditation in the morning of March 27th, with my thoughts and prayers directed toward your reading.
Very sincerely yours, (Miss) [4024]
