This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his office, 115 West 35th Street, Virginia Beach, Va., this 25th day of September, 1928, in accordance with request made by his brother, Mr. [257].

1. GC: You will have before you the bodies and the enquiring minds of [4162] and [257] in the office of the … Factories, …, N.Y. City. You will answer the questions which I will ask you pertaining to each of these, and their relations to and with each other, and their business, social, etc.

2. EC: Yes, we have the body, the enquiring mind, [4162]. Also those relations as exist between the body and [257], with the … Factories, and their kindred interests. These conditions we have had before, and there has been given the body, the enquiring mind, of [4162] that which - were it applied in the activities of the body, with the abilities of same - there would be little or no need for those various conditions arising where differences come as respecting that of others acting in an improper manner with the body. Blame not that upon OTHERS of which the self is the cause. Think not that others have a grudge, or would be beastly or unkind, were the efforts of self expended in the same way and manner as to bring relations such even as the body desires SHOWN self FROM others. Would the body have (as has been given) the respect, the encouragement, the interests in others as is expected of others to have in self, THEN there would be no need for the discussions, the turmoils, the conditions arising. Not that the body is lacking in ability. Think well upon this as was given of old: “Oh ye stiff-necked and adulterous generation! How oft would I have gathered thee together as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wing, and ye would not! Woe be unto thee, that the way has been shown and ye have refused to heed.” We are through.

R3. 6/15/30 Mother [325]‘s letter: ”…Yes, [4162] got married and I was a little worried as the forces saw it. He has a fine wife, one who will help him; a very wealthy family and they have helped him establish his home and I am sure that she will be a help and comfort to him. Yes, I will try not to worry but there are so many things that fall to my bit to straighten out…”

R9. 5/31/43 [4162]‘s letter: “I just finished reading the book that [257] gave to my wife. I haven’t been able to let it down since I started, all things taken into consideration. I have about twenty-five books of the month here and I finished one. I was very much attracted to the early half of the book, which is the brightest and most human, since many landmarks are familiar to me. My wife and daughter, […], aged six, are visiting […] at New Rochelle. I am alone with my young son, […] aged one, who is … his grandfather, to a dot.

“I have lived a very nice life since my first catastrophe that you know about. My daughter in Savannah just passed her twelfth [year] and is a lovely child. A former brother-in-law came to see me in N.Y. and asked me to help him get furniture. [[4162] had become a wholesale furniture representative.] He volunteered the information that my ex mother-in-law was afraid that I would cost her some money, so she decided to wreck the marriage.

“I have a very capable strong healthy wife who seems to be able to go through the processes of having children as easily as the average woman; coming from good strong healthy stock she really has helped sincerely. So far, God has steered me so that I could make a good living independent of any outside help, and kept me in fairly good health. I had a case of stomach ulcers which responded to medical treatment and never recurred. My children have been very healthy, thank God, and I was thinking that over the period of years, I have had no problems that hard work and perseverance, faith in myself and the belief that God helps those that help themselves, couldn’t cure. I bought a home in ‘41 and now have a sizable escrow in it, though I can’t say that the homes my brothers live in don’t sort of put it in the shade. Still it is a six room home with a lovely little back yard with every cultured plant in God’s world crowded into sixty by one hundred and ten, on a nice middle class street with middle class people on a lovely quiet street. I eat three meals a day, clothe my family, pay my church dues, am an air raid warden, run two cars, one for myself and wife, have no real money in the bank. But I think I have all that money can buy. My home borders South Orange and my daughter goes to what is conceded the finest public school system in the country.

“My philosophy concerning you has been that if I had something that needed reading, I would go to you. Since I do not, then that leaves more for the fellow that does need it. My interfering with your orderly processes and relationships with [257] would only breed trouble. Don’t think that I have no faith in you. I have seen enough to know that you have the power, though I will confess that the book revealed many things that were deep mysteries, though my private view of M. B. [MHB] is better left unprinted.

“When I saw in the Sun that Edsel Ford was mortally ill I wrote a train letter to Mrs. Ford telling her about you. I mailed it from Elizabeth at 10:30 P.M. He died at about one the same night. I wrote another letter offering condolences and was sorry that I was late. I was in the middle of your book then.

“I think that if a man can get along fairly well on his own, he only weakens himself by getting readings so that he might corner the money markets. That is not among my ambitions. If I were to tell you that I honestly do not need a reading, it would surprise you. Fact.

“Judge, I have been telling my friends that the war would end June 25, 1943. So far, my timetable on the war is perfect. They say I am crazy. But I have to say it because I very well know I can see its end. My mother [325] was psychic. If she said, ‘[4162], watch out, it will happen’, you bet it happened. In closing, let me say your book is swell and I am glad I read it.

“Next time you are around, you must have dinner with us. I haven’t seen you in ages…”

“P.S. I’ll bet you have a good idea as to who put those police women up to getting you into trouble. I bet I could name the culprit in one guess.”

R10. 6/4/43 EC’s letter to [4162]: “Thanks, more than I can tell you, for yours of the 31st; am sure you know since the days I spent at your home in Lexington, Ky., I have more or less felt toward each of your family as a brother, more than just a stranger; while [257] and I have been possibly closer owing to the many tangles we have been in together first and last, but I have been mindful of each member of the family. For, next to my own Mother, I felt closer to your own Mother, [325], more than anyone I have ever known, a lovely Godly woman if there ever was one, and I am sure she has her reward in Glory, wherever, whatever that be.

“I have asked about you whenever I had a chance. Of course, I have gotten more from [459] than any of the rest I guess, but I have inquired of you, if I haven’t seen you.

“Am glad and happy for you that all has gone so well, for after all, what is life but to live it so as to be able to look every man in the face and tell him where he can get off.

“Yes, it has not been easy for me. I have had many ups and downs. And I suppose Tom Sugrue has told the story, so that the world knows. So it is up to me to so live as not to make a fool of myself just because I have become popular or something of a national figure. Both our boys are in the army, and doing fair I guess. We have one grandson - think he is grand, to be sure. My wife is in fairly good health, and I am able to keep going as yet myself. All in all, I have much to be thankful for and hope I may live to show my appreciation to God for His blessings to me, in giving me many friends, and may I live as to deserve them in a very excellent way.

“Yes, - might say a lot of things about some, but that isn’t best. The Lord overlooks much in each of us, and the way we treat our fellowman is the way we are treating our God.”

“I would love the best in the world to meet your wife and little folks, and hope the next time I am in N.Y. I may have that opportunity.

“I certainly appreciate your taking the time to write. Also, thanks for referring anyone to me, no matter what the circumstance.

“Thanks a lot. Please remember me to your wife and little folks and take care of yourself. Just keep in the way your Mother [325] taught you and you will surely not go far wrong…”

R11. 11/17/82 GD’s note: Today we received from David Osborne, A.R.E. Lobby Reception Coordinator, this card from Mr. [4162] dated 11/8/82:

“Gentlemen: If you have a book THERE IS A RIVER will you let me know price. [257] was my brother.”
