R1. GD’s memo: This affidavit was scribbled, apparently in Mr. L. B. Cayce’s handwriting, preparatory to getting it typed up and signed by Mrs. [4239]. It was on EC’s stationery as Psychic Diagnostician, Anniston, Ala., undated. Copy of affidavit perhaps secured in 1911:

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

This is to certify that during and sometime prior the year 1909 I was in very poor health and under the care of a physician almost constantly. I suffered constantly with my head, back and stomach and lower part of my bowels. Sometimes one and then the other, and sometimes all over. With constant treatment I grew worse until in October 1909 my physician told me I had appendicitis and would have to be operated upon at once. I did not submit to the operation but continued to grow worse and to suffer more excruciating pain, growing weaker all the time. After about two weeks more suffering, my mother talked with the doctor and he told her I was suffering from a bad case of appendicitis and that he had done all he could to relieve me, and nothing would do but for me to submit to an operation, and it should be done at once. My mother at once called on Edgar Cayce and had him diagnose my case October 28, 1909 and prescribe treatment for me. I quit the doctor and at once took up the treatment prescribed by Mr. Cayce and followed it for several weeks, taking no other, and am now stout and well, enjoying better health than for a number of years, all due to Mr. Cayce’s diagnosis and prescription. I heartily recommend him to any sufferer.

EC’s mother was Carrie Elizabeth Major, of the same family as Hugh, Les and Tom Major.]

AT 7:30 P.M. CAYCE TO LECTURE TOMORROW

Hugh Lynn Cayce, son of Edgar Cayce, famed clairvoyant healer, will lecture on his father at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Memorial Building.

Cayce is a representative of the Assn. for Research and Enlightenment, Virginia Beach, Va.

The Edgar Cayce readings are a means toward a better understanding of spiritual laws and principles as set forth in the Bible, according to a spokesman for the Association.

“New discoveries in psychology, religion, parapsychology and the physical sciences, contribute toward a better understanding of the world we live in; but, they also present instances where recent findings confirm ideas presented in the Edgar Cayce readings many years earlier,” the spokesman continued.

The title of tomorrow night’s lecture will be “Ten Million Words From an Unconscious Mind (The Story of Edgar Cayce).”

Cayce was unable to reach Hopkinsville and keep a previous speaking engagement in February because of weather conditions.

CAYCE WORK HAS MEANING TODAY - SON SAYS IN LECTURE

Edgar Cayce’s clairvoyant readings have meaning today in at least two areas, according to his son, Hugh Lynn Cayce, who spoke to about 400 persons last night at the Memorial Building.

His clairvoyant actions added power to the concept that a person is a soul. “You have a body, but you are a soul.” Cayce said his father said he “left his body to make contact with his mind.”

Cayce’s trances and the documentation that exists on them make it reasonable to examine the concept of reincarnation, the speaker said. He emphasized that he did not mean reincarnation in the traditional Hindu concept, that is the soul transferring to lower forms of animal life.

He said his father’s trance statements show that existence on another level of consciousness can affect living persons in emphasizing the re-examination of reincarnation.

Cayce said the work of his father and others like him have made clairvoyance “almost respectable.” He said persons in the field have been and to a certain extent still are considered deranged, or at least strange.

“New discoveries in psychology, religion, parapsychology and the physical sciences contributed toward a better understanding of the world we live in; but, they also present instances where recent findings confirm ideas presented in the Edgar Cayce readings many years earlier,” he continued.

The speaker emphasized that he does not question faith if that is enough to assure one of having a soul. He offered his father’s testimony that he entered a “finer material body” when in his trances.

The lecture dwelt on two types of readings - the life readings and the healing readings. The speaker gave examples of readings, which he said were documented, in which Cayce told persons of prior lives they had led and also prophesied lives which they were to lead, even events which were to happen to them.

Cayce opened his lecture by relating a reading his father gave in 1925 - advice to a woman requiring surgery. He urged surgery for her even before she wrote to ask his advice. It was upon the Cayce family’s return to Ohio that they found the woman’s letter asking for a reading, mailed after he had originally given it.

The Assn. for Research and Enlightenment, Virginia Beach, Va., which the lecturer now heads, plans to hire a doctor to categorize the healing readings to see if any of the prescriptions may be of medical use today, Cayce told the audience.

His father’s trances are so carefully documented that they are the best examples of clairvoyancy in existence, he said. The clairvoyant’s work covered a 40-year span.

When Cayce came out of trances he did not know what he had said, the lecturer noted. According to the speaker, every human is endowed with similar powers which lie latent because of a lack of development. He cited such common examples of the unconscious as slips of the tongue.

A spokesman for the Riverside Committee, which sponsored Cayce’s lecture here, said approximately 30 percent of the audience was from outside the city and county.

Dear Angie:

Please tell all of the people in Virginia Beach, and the State of Virginia that they sent Hopkinsville the best speaker we have had since Russell Conwell’s “Acre of Diamonds” - I would say that Hugh Lynn represented 100 acres of diamonds!

I was so impressed with him personally, his attention to small things to unimportant people - he has the ability to make everyone seem of great worth with no sign of ego. When he spoke the first word of his address - Hugh Lynn Cayce was the MASTER of all techniques - I could have listened all night and there were many who had the same reaction.

He will tell you all about it and I trust we met with his approval as he did with ours.

We will send the books today - Readmore Book Store kept some. Mrs. Masters keeps in the Cayce books all the time and has a nice business with them.

Kenneth Cayce and Gladstone Major took charge of the finances and I am sure the checks have gone forward today. I think the tape recordings Hugh Lynn has from Hopkinsville will be of real value, I was delighted that he could get so many.

Angie we want to organize here at once - tell us what steps to take - Hugh Lynn did not have time to tell us about it, we want to meet in Riverside Chapel to keep the interest there connected with Edgar Cayce - Hugh Lynn knows how deeply I feel abut the structure, he did tell me he did not share my enthusiasm for graveyards. I am very interested in genealogy and keeps me digging.

Tell HLC the next time we will have a glass of water - a better arrangement at the book stand - a real registrar for out of town guests - there were about 100 here - fruit in his room and affection when he COMES.

R6. 3/15/61 (Wednesday) Hopkinsville, Kentucky New Era article:

IN EDGAR CAYCE READING - ERA OF EXCITING EVENTS IS PREDICTED

The 40-year-period - 1958 to 1998 - will be one of mass upheavals, socially, economically and scientifically, according to the Edgar Cayce readings as related by his son here last night.

Prophecies - some vague, some concrete - of coming world changes were included in the lecture by Hugh Lynn Cayce to approximately 300 last night at the Memorial Building. Cayce is director of the Association for Research and Enlightenment, Inc., the organization devoted to study and research in the Edgar Cayce readings.

“We are headed for even more exciting times than those through which we have just passed if Edgar Cayce was right,” the lecturer noted. Cayce urged that his listeners examine and investigate the readings, not gullibly accept them.

The era of change that began in 1958 encompassed the Sputnik, the first man-made satellite put into orbit and racial discord of Africa and America. Some specific land changes slated for the period by the readings include a portion of Japan sinking into the sea, the rising of land from the ocean of the east coast of the U.S. and a shifting of the polar regions to make what are now semi-tropical areas more tropical.

Cayce pointed out his father had “seemed to have knowledge of future events” when he predicted the stock market crash and panic of Oct., 1929, as early as March that year. he said Edgar Cayce in his self-imposed hypnotic state, forecast earthquakes for a portion of South America in 1958. Chile was struck by quakes in that year. The South American quakes were to inaugurate the 40-year era of change, according to the reading.

The lecturer, a resident of Virginia Beach, Va., where the association headquarters are located, pointed out his father delved into other areas than the well-known physical readings in which he diagnosed sicknesses and prescribed cures. Other areas included in the readings are psychical research and religion.

Cayce touched on two problems confronting today’s world and gave what his father said about each. He quoted the readings as saying, “through Russia comes the hope of the world.” A religious development, on which this hope is based, will take years of crystallization, he added.

Commenting on the readings’ statements toward the Negro, he quoted “He is thy brother. He should be held in an attitude of his own individual fitness. God has made the nations of the earth in one blood.”

Cayce emphasized his father’s feelings about the “thought world,” a far more important one than this in which we live. “Every action, every word is preceded by a separate thought, and each combines with all the rest to form the ‘thought world’.”

Each individual contributes to the thought world, the lecturer said his father believed. In that concrete thoughts motivate physical actions, Edgar Cayce pinned the future of the world on the thoughts of individuals.

“Thoughts of fear and hate can bring about war,” he added. “Our bodies, no less than our world, are a result of our thoughts.”

He urged that each individual face himself first, indicating such a look might give a clue of coming world changes.

Enclosed is Cashier’s Check No. 81527 in the amount of 127.71 which is the total proceeds of the offering taken at the lecture of Mr. Hugh Lynn Cayce given at the Memorial Building of this city on March 15. This is the net amount with the deduction of 33.00 for expenses of Mr. Cayce and lodging and rent of the building.

You will be interested to know that the lecture was very well received here and that the attendance was beyond our advanced estimate.

Dear Gladstone:

Just a note to thank you for handling some of the business details of the Hopkinsville lecture. I am sure that everyone there connected with the venture appreciate your assistance and your interest.

It was certainly pleasant for me to get acquainted with relatives and friends again at this very informal and lovely dinner prior to the lecture. I still feel a little strange that this interest has developed in Hopkinsville - though it is certainly a natural place for it. Perhaps it is my reticence to return to an area that I knew so well in my childhood. When an adult returns to an area where he spent as a child there is always a nostalgic feeling.

Please extend to anyone who helped with the details of the lecture my expression of appreciation.

R9. 8/17/61 Mrs. Arthur Lander of Louisville, Ky., visited A.R.E.; she is the daughter of Mrs. [4239] and sister of Mr. Gladstone Major. She asked GD if we had a copy of her mother’s reading; she had heard about it all her life but had never seen it. Before this we did not know that [4239] was a woman, since the name suggested male. The daughter said her mother had related to her many times the story of her experience, which happened when she was 20 years old but before her children were born, though she had had a miscarriage (later attributed to the trouble which EC described). The reading explained that she had been thrown from a horse when a child and that it had caused the back condition which now reflected in the condition described by the doctor as appendicitis. EC recommended that she go to a chiropractor in …, Ky., where she was then living and have the spinal corrections made. Other suggestions were also made which the daughter did not remember, though she did remember her mother saying that she took treatments from a chiropractor, Dr. Andrew Seargent [Sargent?]. Mrs. [4239] was relieved of the trouble and lived a normal, healthy life until her death in 1954.

After EC mentioned it in the reading she remembered the accident with the horse, which happened when she was about ten years old.
