GC: You will give a physical, mental and spiritual reading on this body, with suggestions for the improvement of any or all of these conditions.
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here. Now, we find the body a very interesting study in many respects, when taken in the view of physical, mental and spiritual improvement for the body. In this body we would find a thorough exemplification of the truths as found in that of the necessity of the physical being in accord with the mental and spiritual forces of same, for the perfect manifestation of the better elements in each.
-
Now, these are physical conditions as we find them in this body, though all must be considered from the standpoint of the mental attitude towards self, towards surroundings, toward conditions in a secular, in a physical and in a spiritual manner. These though are physical forces:
-
IN THE BLOOD SUPPLY FIRST, we find this deficient in red blood and also in the white. That is, we find the rebuilding, replenishing, forces of blood stream deficient. Not to the extent where the body has become wholly anaemic, but the tendency toward such a condition. Hence the retractions in many portions of the functioning organism of this character of condition. Hence the lack of resistance. Though the will often carries the body beyond the capacity of physical endurance, yet the replenishing and re-building and rejuvenating of the body from such strains is often very trying and telling on the condition of the system.
-
IN THE NERVE SYSTEM, this we find very much used beyond its normal abilities and capacities. Hence a nervous disposition, in a manner, has been created in the physical forces of body. Nervous headaches are the results often from these conditions. Pains through the back portion of the head. The tendency to have quick perspirations, hot and cold sensations over the body, tingling sensations in the lower part of the limbs, in the arms, quickening and jerking at times of the muscular forces in face and over portions of the body. Cold, clammy, sensations over portions of the body. Again with hot flushes, with quick breathing, and the tendency to over activity of many portions of the functioning of the digestive system at such times, a general debilitation in the nerve supplying forces, often many of the plexuses becoming too relaxed in their functions and again very taut, bringing about then the condition of taxing to the whole system.
-
IN THE FUNCTIONING THEN OF THE ORGANS THEMSELVES, as these: Brain forces very good.
-
Functioning of the organs of the sensory system, these show retraction at times; strain as is caused to the eye from nerve, to the ear from nerve, to the speech, and the stuttering or the choking, and inability to speak the things that are thought in the body at times. Lack of perfect coordination throughout, from nerve retractions and nerve debilitation in the system.
-
In the throat, bronchials, lungs, larynx, these are very good in their normal functioning, yet are often under the strain of the nerve condition in system, and of the body, as it were, in general.
-
Spleen shows an engorgement, and the swelling or fullness as appears across the abdomen and across the lower portion of lungs, these are from the reactions, and are rather of a mental condition, for the functioning, as we see, of the spleen in supplying of the red blood forces in the body from blood reaction, is that the body often overtaxes self through mental strain, with body physically below normal.
-
Digestive system shows distresses, as we have had a condition as has existed in the lower portion of the stomach for some time. This rather of a condition of the excess of hydrochloric forces being forced back in the pyloric end of the stomach. Hence the times when we have this breaking out over portions of the body. This excess of the secretions as they are thrown from this are a reflection, as we see, of the condition as exists in this portion of the stomach.
-
Liver below normal in functioning. Excessive in excretory forces. Secretions as for digestion below normal. Excessive in excretory forces. Hence the condition as exists in the digestive system, the tendency for the body to be excessive either in laxativeness through the intestines, or just the opposite, constipation for time. The functioning then of the lower portion of the digestive system shows how these excesses produce these effects in the system, through the changes that often take place, in how digestion acts and react in the system. That is, at one time properties taken in the system digest easily, while with the next perhaps that these are taken, the same conditions will produce indigestion for the body. Excess then in kidneys, and the pains as produced in bladder at times, is a reflex nerve condition of the body.
-
Then, to bring the normal forces for the body, in that of the physical, we would use those deep vibrations of the electrically driven vibrator, over the whole length of the cerebro-spinal system, at each evening, with the hard knob of same. Then over the frontal portion of body, face, neck, arms, across the upper portion of body, especially across the diaphragm, over the liver, down over the pelvic organs, even on either side, that of the sponge with its vibrations, letting these extend to the lower limbs, on the inside, or along the region of the sciatic nerves. Taking (these should be taken each evening, for ten to fifteen minutes - electrically driven vibrator.) these properties:
Tincture of Valerian…4 ounces, Tincture of Stillingia…1/2 dram, Elixia Calisaya…2 ounces, Elixia, or Essence of Celerena…1/2 ounce, Bromide of Potassium…20 grains, Iodide of Potassium…15 grains, Syrup of Sarsaparilla…1 ounce. Sufficient simple syrup or Peptotol to make 10 ounces.
This should be shaken well together before each dose would be taken, which would be half a teaspoonful three times each day.
-
Do not eat too much meats. The juices or broths of same, chicken or beef, may be taken. Rather green vegetables, with good deal of fruit and of gruel. No white breads, rather whole wheat, eaten or buckwheat should be eaten as bread.
-
For the mental development of the body, we would give that the 14th, 15th, 16th, 17th chapters of John be learned, until the body can make these a portion of the inner self, realizing that the abilities of the entity, and the purpose of each individual, is to manifest their individual conception of the Father that dwells within them, and that even as He, the Master, is in Him, the Father is in the individual who will attempt to manifest same, and that the greater service that is done to the fellow man is the highest service to the Creator. In this the spiritual awakening will come that is necessary in the individual, for in Him we have life, and in life the understanding, and in the understanding, the manner of manifesting same before men.
-
We are through with this for the present.

R1. 7/11/25 EC’s letter to [4409]:
Mrs. [4409] …, La.
Dear Mrs. [4409]:
As you will see, the reading was gotten for you this morning. I’m very much in hopes that this will prove very interesting and most beneficial to you, and will help and assist you in gaining a hold on your physical condition to such a degree that you will be able to throw off these distressing and depressing conditions that come to your mental faculties through your physical condition.
I want to thank you very much for your faith and confidence in me from what you have heard, and I am hoping and trusting, and praying that through the study of the reading as has been gotten for your physical and mental and spiritual condition, that you will gain more confidence, not in me, but in the divine that is within yourself, and I feel very sure if you will follow the suggestions as are made here, and read continually, especially, these portions of the scripture as is pointed out, you will gain help and aid to understand yourself, to understand the conditions and gain so much help from Him that your physical condition will improve almost immediately. I would certainly also follow out the suggestions as are given for the medicinal properties. I’m in hopes it’s going to be possible for you to get the vibrations as are suggested here from an electrical vibrator. However, should you not be able to take this regularly, I’m sure your druggist will be able to secure for you a vibrator that will be of great help in its use.
I also want to thank you for your contribution towards the work of the Association. You understand we do not make a charge, yet we rely on the good that we may be able to bring into the lives of others, and they through their goodness may contribute sufficient for the up-keep of myself, my family, and others who contribute their services to this work. I’m in hopes you will let me hear from you quite often. I assure you I desire to be of service if it is possible.
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce EC:GD

ASSOCIATION OF NATIONAL INVESTIGATORS
(This form to be filled out and returned after reading is received)

REMARKS:
(You will please state in the space below how near, in your opinion, reading fits your condition, as you know it yourself, and if you expect to carry out the suggestions made for the improvement of your health.)
In most respects, the reading seems to describe the physical condition correctly, but in a few of the minor respects, I have not noticed some of the conditions mentioned. They may exist, and not be so noticeable, owing to the more predominant ailments and sufferings.
I do not remember of having the tingling sensations through the body, nor the cold, clammy sensations spoken of although the latter may have existed. I am not a close observer of my physical make-up, and I suppose I am negligent in many minor ailments.
I do not stutter, or choke, but am lots of times, at a loss for words to express my self. Words that are very ordinary, and that I use everyday, but my mind won’t function quickly and I am very forgetful, but I think worry is responsible for most of this.
The intestines are never lax, I am deplorably constipated, have been all my life, and especially the last fourteen years. It is almost a miracle, if the intestines act without a laxative.
But in regard to the stomach, liver, blood and kidneys, I think you have described conditions correctly.
R3. 7/22/25 [4409]‘s letter to EC:
…, La.
Dear Sir:
You will please pardon my seeming negligence in returning the inclosed blank. I have been having a series of headaches, that rendered me incapable of anything like work. Six days and nights, I had this throbbing headache, and the only relief was through hot applications of steaming towels. My eyes hurt constantly, and I am becoming alarmed concerning them. In taking exercises, I hurt the back of my neck, and it has been sore for about seven weeks, and one vertebrae, about the center of the neck is very sore to the touch. My eyes have been hurting, for the same length of time, that my neck has been sore, and I believe they are in some way connected in the neck and eye troubles. Then I wonder again, if my teeth could be causing the trouble. From outward appearances, they are all right, but a very few of them have the nerve killed in filling, and I very often have “gum boils”, and sore mouth. I wish now, I had asked you to give particular attention to the teeth and eyes, for my teeth could be the source of most of these disturbances.
My stomach has given me a great deal of trouble within the last four years. Food sours in a few moments after eating, and produces bloating. My breath is very bad and a bitter slimy taste in my mouth, mornings, and sometimes through the night, I am compelled to get up and wash my mouth with soda, or listerine, before I can sleep again. My mouth is just as bitter as if I had tasted quinine.
My kidneys are over-active, and I have liver spots on my face. The doctors all say my blood is a very poor quality, and the heart beats too fast always.
I appreciate the interest you have taken in me, and I thank you very much for the attention given me. And I intend following instructions, as near as I can. I had the prescription filled, and have started taking the medicine, but the vibrator I cannot use out here on the farm. I mean to try very hard to find a substitute, if I am unable to use the vibrator in the near future.
I have two sisters who went to Florida last December, and are working at real-estate. They are doing well, and want me to join them this fall, and if my health improves so that I am able to take up the work, I am going, and down there, I will have electricity, and can use the vibrator nicely, but my health will have to improve quite a bit, before I am able to work any. I suffered so much within the last six days with my eyes and head, I was compelled to seek relief, and went to an Osteopath Dr. in Baton Rouge. He did not seem to know just where the trouble lay, but thinks he can help me, but it is so far (thirty-five miles) and the road so hot, I am all worn out when I reach home again.
I am relying upon your medicine to give me the greater benefit, and since the Osteopath does not give medicine, I do not think the two cures will conflict.
Please pardon my badly written letter, it looks all “smeared” to me. I feel very much like going to bed, but my conscience kept nagging me to write and express my appreciation, for all your kindness and consideration. Words are very weak things with which to express my thanks, and I hope I will be benefitted to the extent, of being able to take up some sort of work, in the near future, and I assure you, I will not be so tardy in showing my appreciation with something other than words.
I would like some of the literature spoken of in your first letter. I wish to give it to my friends and relatives, and if I derive the good I am anticipating, I shall be the means in finding many new patients for you. Once I know a thing to be of worthy consideration, I am not slow to commend it to any and all, that may derive benefits therefrom.
Thanking you again, and assuring you of my appreciation of any suggestions you feel inclined to make, I am
Most respectfully, Mrs. [4409]
R4. 8/4/25 EC’s letter to [4409]:
My dear Mrs. [4409]:
I am in receipt of yours of the 22nd, and I thank you very much for writing me as fully as you have. I certainly am in hopes that you have been able to secure some relief for your eyes and head. I’m sure, if you were able to keep up the osteopathic adjustments and treatments, that there would be nothing that would help you any more than they would, and I believe you would be doing the best thing for yourself to so arrange your affairs that you could take these treatments for a few weeks anyway, without having to go so far, as you say, making such a trip before and after treatments almost undoes everything that the doctor is able to do for you. I’m in hopes, however, that you have been able to obtain those things that were suggested for you in the reading given and these have been able to add to the relief of your physical condition.
I certainly am very much in hopes that your physical health will improve to the extent where you will be able to join your sisters in their work in Florida, for I have seen some of the country there and I believe that State has some of the greatest possibilities before it of any State in the Union, especially for the next ten to fifteen years, and I certainly am in hopes that you will be able to add your efforts with those of your sisters and that you will be able to accomplish a great deal, even far beyond what you now might anticipate or guess at. I’m sure, if you will follow out the suggestions as were given, you will find your faith building up and your abilities to do things coming back to normal conditions and you will be ready to meet the conditions of life as they arise.
Hoping and trusting you will let me hear from you from time to time, assuring you of my desire to be of help whenever it is possible, and with best wishes, I am

NAME: [4409] ADDRESS: …, La.
Kindly advise us in the space below if you have followed all, or any part, of the suggestions given in your reading of July 11, 1925, and give us in detail the exact results you have obtained.
I have followed out the medicinal instructions as given, but the vibrator I could not use as I live on a farm with no electric current.
I have been going to an osteopath in connection with the medicine, but I can see no improvement in my condition.
I am planning on making a change of climate, and surroundings in the near future, and am hoping this will benefit me.
I have two sisters who have recently moved to Florida, making it possible for me to spend this winter there. I shall learn to swim and get all the out-door exercise it is possible for me to have.
Thanking you for your interest in my welfare, I am
Most respectfully, Mrs. [4409]

B1. 6/27/25 [4409]‘s letter to EC:
Dear Sir:-
Through Mrs. […] of this place, I heard of how you can tell the origin of one’s sickness, and what will effect a cure. Mrs. […] has a brother, whom you benefitted greatly, a Mr. [4387] of …
I have had ill health for fourteen years. Have doctored until I became disgusted and quit, and life for me is just one round of home-remedies, and bodily vigilance, to keep out of bed.
I have taken to exercises in the last few weeks, and while they seem to help in some respects, it seems to have affected my eyes, they have troubled me constantly since beginning the exercises, and this worries me very much.
I should like very much to hear from you in the near future, for the game is not worth the candle if one has to be sick always. Perhaps you can help me also. And I have other friends and relatives I shall refer to you.
Most respectfully, Mrs. [4409]
B2. 7/7/25 [4409]‘s letter to EC:
Dear Sir:-
Your letter was delayed, and I doubt if this reaches you in time for a reading on the 10th. However, I will be at my home, on the farm 5-1/2 miles from …, at all times. I scarcely ever leave the house so any day after the 10th will be just as well, if convenient for you.
As far as I understand your letter, I think I can meet the requirements, unless you require me to have too much faith in God. I can’t say that I have any, I believe He can do a lot of things, but I don’t see how He can answer prayer, even though we have the faith of the mustard seed size. Say for instance, two people are praying, one for one thing, and the other against it, how can He possibly give to each of them, the thing desired, even though they have the faith that removes mountains.
As long as I have lived, my life has been most unsatisfactory. Of course, God has given me the things He has given to the majority, in regard to health, that is, a normal body, no deformities, and my illness, I suppose is due to improper living. But I cannot recall a day, that I would live over again. I am thirty-nine years old, and not one day of my life has been happy. I lost my mother at six years of age, and I lost with her every opportunity to be any thing worth while. I have had pluck and tenacity, have worked harder than any three women, but I never get anywhere. I have come to believe that the worthy never get anything but the knocks. I was brought up to fear God, and I have never done the things I know to be wrong, and have always sacrificed my wishes and longings, to those of others, but I don’t find anything worth while. I am thoroughly disgusted with life and all it holds, I have lived years, beyond my thirty-nine, and I cannot for the life me understand why anyone desires to live on. I would much prefer to die like the animals if I could have my choice. I have had enough of life, and very much dislike the prospect of another life, after this one. My sister has often told me that the devil has the same power as God. If this be so, how can He do anything. To me, two equal forces, is a constant struggle for supremacy, that would mean that we human beings are the same as a bone between two hungry mastiffs, if you will pardon the crude comparison. Any good that God can do, the evil one overshadows, with sorrow and suffering. Perhaps I am too ignorant of God and the Bible, I do not hear much of either. We made a big mistake in coming here from Indiana. It is a Catholic settlement, no church except Catholic, therefore, I have not been inside a church but four times, in six years. We are much dissatisfied, but cannot get away, so what cannot be cured, must be endured. I cannot think that “everything is for the best,” for living here, with no hope of getting away, sick and disgusted has brought but the very worst that is in me. No good can possibly come out of it, and why the Creator places me here, I cannot understand. Everything tends to lessen my faith in any unseen power.
If you can help me, I will be more than glad, but with my lack of faith, if you cannot help, best let the reading go. I have faith in you, I believe you can tell me what is wrong, and I think God CAN do things, but I always think He WON’T.
I am enclosing a check for five dollars, and if you can help me to get well, I will be glad to sacrifice some of my own needs, to make a better donation.
Most respectfully, Mrs. [4409] (My own full name)
