This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his office, 115 West 35th Street, Virginia Beach, Va., this 13th day of October, 1926, in accordance with request made by her mother, Mrs. […].

Time of Reading 4:00 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. New York City.

1. GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time. You will diagnose the case thoroughly, giving the cause of the existing conditions, also the treatment for the cure and relief of this body.

2. EC: Yes, we have the body here.

3. Now, we find there are those conditions with this body that need correction, and too long have these conditions been allowed to remain in this manner, for this will require much attention, time and persistence, to bring the normal physical conditions to the body.

4. In the presentation, when the birth occurred, there was that that should have been corrected, and there were depressions made in the 1st cervical; also in the lumbar region, that has grown into conditions that, WITH others as have occurred in the body since, has brought about this general condition, and these specific non-developments in specific ways and manners, produced by the pressure as is, and as has been created in the system by these physical conditions.

5. To bring the normal forces, then, will be through that of the gradual changes as will be necessary to be produced in the physical structure - NOT by an operation, but by persistent correction and alignment of bone structure, bone tissue, and the removal of pressure on those vertebrae, those centers in the various portions of the system, for as one is loosed we will find other conditions occur; yet gradually all of these may be brought in their proper time, and in their proper order, to be a normal condition in this body, and through same the body, the mind, the whole conditions in the body be released, as it were, from its bondage, and be brought to the normal development in body structure, in the general conditions in the system, in the mental reactions and reforcements in the system, and much will be accomplished through this entity by this releasement.

6. These shall be accomplished, then, by the constant deep manipulation, osteopathically given, and these followed AFTER by the Rino or Alpine Rays - applying, before these manipulations and adjustments are made, those of the hot packs - PREFERABLY of that in the hot saturated solution of salt and vinegar - APPLE vinegar. These in such packs as will bring a perfect relaxation to the cervical and lumbar and lower dorsal region, as the adjustments are made, for the bone structure, the sensory system, the whole nerve system will be released, and various conditions will arise, but each must be met as the conditions change.

7. Follow this, then, in the way as has been given. Adjustments should be made at least every other day - the packs or relaxing before, the rays following, see? This should be followed, then, for twenty-eight days, and then we would give those conditions as to be met at THAT time.

8. Those conditions as are specific from these conditions as have arisen from time to time, should be met when the general condition has first been set in that way and manner as to bring a normal flow from the centers of the physical being of this body.

9. Do that, then, as given, for the twenty-eight days.

10. We are through for the present.

R1. 10/14/26 EC’s letter to [4701]‘s mother: ”…I enclose you herewith, the copy of the reading as was gotten at the appointed time. I am very much in hopes that you will be able to have this tried in such a way as to gain the results that you should. I realize that it will be a hard thing, perhaps for you to get a regular practitioner to carry out the suggestions here given, and this we feel is really necessary, or else we may not expect to gain the results desired. Hence, my hope, dream, and purpose has been for several years to one day have such a place that these may be carried out in accordance with the suggestions as are given in these readings. It seems now that within the new few months I will be able to see this realized, for we expect to establish an institution within the Association of National Investigators, and to have competent men at the head of the institution who will carry out these suggestions - men who by personal experience for themselves, for their loved ones, have thoroughly seen demonstrated the efficacy of the work. Of course, after the establishment of this institution there will be stipulated fees, etc., for readings, treatments, etc. Until that time (and of course it’s necessary for me to live right on), we ask that people contribute to the upkeep of the work in accordance with their means and abilities. All checks are made payable to Edgar Cayce.

“I would suggest, Mrs. […], that you have Dr. E. R. Kraus, [Eugene Kraus, D.O.] 2345 Broadway, to examine the patient. You will notice also there is the suggestion that there will be many changes as the treatments are applied, and after twenty-eight days of such treatment this should be followed up. At that time, I think it would be well for you, or your physician, or both, to prepare a list of questions to be asked concerning the case.

“We assure you, Mrs. […], it is our desire to be of help and assistance if possible, and we hope that you will let us hear from you from time to time…”

R2. 11/6/26 [4701]‘s mother’s letter to EC:

”…Regarding the reading on Oct. 13, 1926 of [4701]:

“I have delayed writing you, trying to decide what would be the best course to pursue. The reading seemingly does not fit my daughter’s case at all.

“She was a normal child until the age of eight years with the exception of a slight valvular heart affection.

“She has always been entirely normal mentally; in fact, above the average mentality, and has quite decided musical and artistic ability.

“She was perfectly formed and pronounced normal in every way by the physician and nurse attending at her birth.

“She was an active child, walking at the age of ten months and talking quite plainly at one year.

“Her present trouble began when she was eight years old.

“We have given her every medical aid that was possible and tried osteopathic treatments quite extensively.

“Her trouble has been diagnosed always as ‘tubercular bones in the lower part of her spine.’

“Her heart trouble has developed into a very badly leaking valvular, and greatly enlarged, heart, which with four discharging abscesses on her left hip, are the very serious troubles she is now contending with.

“We cannot see our way clear to follow the instructions as given in your reading without something more definitely connected with her case, as we see it, to follow.

“We are very much troubled about it.

“She remained in her room quiet, and alone on Oct. 13th between the hours of three and five o’clock…”

R3. 11/26/26 EC’s letter to [4701]‘s mother:

”…I have yours of the 6th, and from your letter I do not wonder that you are worried concerning the condition of your daughter, nor as to the report that was made in the reading. I have no explanation to offer or suggest, Mrs. […], other than possibly we do not understand the reading. Would you care to make an appointment for another reading, by questions, and you write the list of questions? That would be asked concerning her condition? If you would, we shall be mighty glad to try to be of help, for we assure you it’s our desire to help if possible, though to be sure, we do not understand all the workings of the phenomena as is manifested through these readings. If you would care though, to do this, we shall be glad to hear from you and be glad to make an appointment. I am sure you recognize from what others say that many have gained wonderful results. I do not know why your daughter could not also.

“Hoping that you will let us hear from you…”

R4. 5/17/27 [4701]‘s father’s letter:

”…Replying to your form letter dated May 12, 1927, regarding the case of Miss [4701]… With respect to the reading made by Mr. Edgar Cayce last year, Mrs. […] the mother of Miss [4701], wrote you fully to the effect that the reading was entirely at variance with the facts.

“The reading indicated that the subject was abnormal from birth, whereas she was a normal child until she was about eight or nine years old and attended the public schools in …, Indiana, where we lived at that time.

“She had a hard fall on a steep hill while skating with roller skates and also had a fall on a stairway which may be the source of her present difficulties which have continued for about sixteen years. She has a tubercular spine which continually formulates pus which finds an outlet through four openings in her hip. She was at one time in a plaster cast and an attempt was made last year to fit a brace to her back but it was found that she could not wear such a contraption.

“Several years ago while at the Pennsylvania Hotel, Mr. Cayce made a reading of the same individual, which reading corresponded fairly accurately with the condition of the subject. At that time he prescribed the use of plantain, which the reading stated should be cooked and would form into a jelly. We obtained a quantity of the plant but instead of condensing into a jelly, only a quantity of black juice was obtained. This being the situation, no further attempt at that time was made to follow the procedure set out in the original reading.

“With respect to the second reading, you have already been fully advised through the medium of a longhand letter to the effect that it did not fit with the actual conditions of the subject, from which you would understand, of course, that no attempt would be made to follow the procedure outlined therein.

“At the time the first reading was made, [4/19/21] Mr. Cayce was endeavoring to obtain funds by which he expected to establish a sanitarium of some sort and he was endeavoring to use his remarkable faculties to locate oil fields in the Southwest, but it is my impression that he, himself, has reached the conclusion that he was disobeying the Eternal Verities and that it was not intended that he should be able to procure money through that medium.

“The writer gained his first knowledge of Mr. Cayce’s capabilities and the remarkable phenomena with which he is endowed, through an officer of an Eastern Railroad [E. W. Eppler?] and he probably has a record of the first reading in the case of [4701], at which time the address was …, New York, N.Y.

“The writer of this letter who is the father of Miss [4701], as well as her mother, are interested in Mr. Cayce’s readings. We would be willing to pay a reasonable amount for information or instructions which might be utilized to the benefit of Miss [4701], who is now 24 1/2 years old.

“Under the rather peculiar circumstances surrounding this particular case, the writer would be pleased to have a copy of this letter reach Mr. Cayce personally, and to that end, two copies are enclosed. If any further response is made or any correspondence desired in connection with this rather peculiar case, you can address me as follows:

”…P.S. Miss [4701] is now in a summer camp located about three miles northwest from …, Conn.”

R5. 5/31/27 EC’s letter to [4701]‘s father:

”…A copy of your letter addressed to the Association of National Investigators, Inc., dated May 17th, was handed me. I certainly want to thank you very much for same and I appreciate very much, Mr. […], your interest as respecting the phenomena. I want to say to you first, this is the first experience in the many hundreds of readings that have been given by me, in which such a thing has occurred, as did in this. I don’t understand it. I don’t understand the phenomena. I would like very much - if it is possible - to have some questions asked respecting the cause of the unusual circumstances connected with this case. If it is possible, I would like to have this with you present, and we would like also to give the reading to see if we couldn’t suggest something that would be helpful or beneficial in Miss [4701]‘s case. Could you arrange to come here, or had you rather that I arrange to meet you in New York?

“Association of National Investigators, Inc., is a group of individuals - some of national reputation - some of international reputation - who have banded together to study the phenomena in all its various phases. Also to establish the institution that has been the dream of my life, where the suggestions given in these readings may be carried out in a scientific manner, and under the direction of a competent medical staff. Apparently, the success that has been attained through the work in the last eight or ten years would warrant this. Hence the undertaking. Of course, I have not as yet - personally - laid this specific case before the Board, but I desire to do so with your permission; for I want to be of service. I don’t want to fool myself, and I certainly don’t want to try and fool anyone else.

“Upon receipt of your letter, I looked into the files and find that we have a copy of the original reading. In fact, I believe we were aware of this being in the files when the last reading was taken, but why the conditions as presented were so entirely different - I don’t know - and I’d like to try to find out. Will you be kind enough to cooperate with me along the line suggested, or have you others to suggest?

“I think I remember to whom you refer when you speak of the individual from whom you gained the first information of the phenomena - Mr. Eppler, [E. W.? Eppler] if I am not mistaken, and I’d like for him to be present, if he would care to - either with you here or with you when I would meet you in New York. I assure you I want to handle it the way that YOU want it - but most of all I want to be of help if possible.

“Thanking you for your letter, and appreciating your referring same to my personal attention - trusting that I may have the pleasure of seeing you soon…”

R6. 6/23/27 [4701]‘s father’s letter to EC:

”…I am not just now in a position to write you fully as to further reading in the case of Miss [4701], for the reason that she and her mother are at our summer place which is located near … Conn.

“She has been losing ground during the last few months and we are quite uneasy about her. We still have hopes that with favorable weather she may gain some of her strength during the balance of the summer. Should she become able to travel, it may just be that we can arrange to have her go to Virginia Beach for a brief stay. At any rate, we are interested in your ability to diagnose cases and prescribe remedies, regardless of the fact that the two readings already made have not corresponded very well with the actual physical condition of Miss [4701].

“I shall expect to write you further a little later concerning her case. In the meantime, I would appreciate having you send to me at …, New York, N.Y., any circulars or advertising matter which you may have and which gives the rates for accommodations at Virginia Beach and any other information with respect to your institution which may be of interest…”

R7. 11/30/27 [4701]‘s father’s letter to EC:

”…Sorry to have missed you. Our daughter is no better and it was in her behalf that I had expected to talk to you…”

R8. 12/12/27 EC’s letter to [4701]‘s father:

”…I was sorry that circumstances were such that I didn’t have the opportunity to see you and talk with you and Mrs. […]. I would like very much to try and be of help if it is at all possible. I don’t suppose that it is probable that you would be in this part of the country any time between now and the middle of January? If there is a probability that you would be coming this way, I would like very much for you to stop in and see us. The chances are that I will be in New York again the third week in January. If it’s not reasonable for us to get together before then, I would like to arrange to meet you at that time…”

R9. 12/20/27 [4701]‘s father’s letter to EC:

”…I am in receipt of your letter of December 12, 1927, and wish to thank you for your interest in our daughter’s case.

“It will not be possible for me to go to Virginia Beach but I shall be pleased to meet you upon the occasion of your next visit to New York, which I understand will be some time in the early part of next year.

“Our daughter is gradually failing so that we have very little hope for any improvement and doubt if anything can be accomplished at this late date, much to our disappointment.

“Notwithstanding this situation, however, I am interested in the work you are doing and shall be glad to have a brief conference with you if arrangements can be made for an interview…”

R10. 1/20/28 EC’s letter to [4701]‘s father:

”…The best laid plans at times go amiss. I thought when I had yours of December 20th I would be in New York this last week. That was the way it had been planned, but our work here and other conditions make it impossible for me to make this trip at this time, and I don’t know now just when it will be - possibly a little further along in the early Spring

• but when I do come up I would like very much to meet you and Mrs. […], and to talk with you concerning the work in which I have been engaged for some time and the plans for its further development. We are making progress slowly towards the establishing of the institution here at Virginia Beach. We want to be right and thorough. (As I have said - since I was first accused of doing the work - if it is right and of the Lord, it WILL succeed! If it isn’t, it should never succeed, no matter how unusual we might think some of the phenomena is. I’m only sorry I haven’t been able to offer some suggestion that would be helpful toward your needs and desires for your daughter - but thanking you for your interest and hoping I may have the pleasure of meeting you personally…”

R11. 1/25/28 [4701]‘s father’s letter to EC:

”…I am just in receipt of your letter of January 20, 1928, and note that you are making some headway in the development of your plans and the establishment of a sanitarium at Virginia Beach.

“With respect to the case of my daughter, she has lost so much ground during the last two or three years that we have no hope that she will ever be any better so that further efforts in her behalf would accomplish nothing.

“However, I should be glad to meet you upon the occasion of your next visit to New York and if you will let me know the time of your arrival and the name of your hotel, I will make it a point to call upon you.

“We are not in a position to make any extensive contributions but will pay you for the last reading if you have a bill against us in that connection. As explained in previous communications, the report did not conform with her case in any way so that we could, of course, make no use of the suggestions contained therein.

“I am hoping, however, that you succeed in your project as apparently you have some unexplained insight into things…”
